Even though her one-shot Koe no Katachi won critical acclaim, it took a longsome law suit to get a magazine to publish it because of its socio-critical theme. Eventually, it was featured in the February edition of Bessatsu Shounen Magazin, where it placed first, and later in the 12th edition of the 2013 Weekly Shounen Magazine.

She has also collaborated with UBUKATA Tow for the manga adaption of his novel Mardock Scramble.

"Sorry for creating something with flaws. To me, that was perfect."

Part two has ended, and I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. Despite taking three years like part one, it has only 7 volumes to part one's 12, and I can't help but think the slower schedule caused the whole thing to be truncated, especially in its latter half. It's littered with plot points that are introduced then quickly resolved (Fushi impersonating Funa, Mizuha's dad's change of heart, Nono being discovered by Sumika) and characters that seemed interesting but quickly faded into the background (and Eko is still basically Fushi's pet). Even so, I was never as hard on it as a lot of readers are, and this volume especially has a lot of great moments, even if they don't have much space to breathe.

This is "the Satoru volume", and we finally get an explanation of what exactly he is. It's been a long time coming, and it was worth it. His backstory managed to make his actions and (lack) of emotion understandable without the copout of a tragic backstory. He himself is exactly what Fushi would have become without his journey of growth and attachment to the world, and in the end, he chose to shoulder the same ephemeral limits he placed upon all living things. His tears as he lost his memories are a wonderfully ambiguous moment. Was he realising that Fushi was his first "friend", and he was going to lose that? Did he realize the horror of death, and regret his choice? We'll never know, he's gone.

Fushi is thankfully continuing along the good path, signified by finally naming the horse "Meiran". Now that the Man in Black is gone, I'm thinking Fushi may never find out she's Pioran, or that might be one of the last things to ever happen. I do have some slight disappointment he didn't choose to become omnipotent, but there really would be nowhere for the story to go, and it fits his choice to live more in the moment and develop as a human rather than a god. As Yuki argues, there is room to understand and coexist with the knockers, rather than needing to become all-powerful to exterminate them. And as Satoru says, even if Fushi did exterminate them and convince his friends to live forever, he wouldn't necessarily be happy.

Mizuha gets a surprisingly emotional sendoff. But it's kind of funny, running off with the Guardians was exactly what the last volume was about stopping, and now it's fine? We don't even see anyone's reaction to her leaving forever. At least her parting with Fushi was better than Kahaku's, and her claim to responsibility in the fight against knockers is very Fushi-like. Maybe Fushi will take her form? She also doesn't appear or get mentioned after the 60 year timeskip. Given the way this storyline "ended", I can only assume she left descendants behind and they'll keep coming up. Hopefully without Left Hand this time.

And the teaser for part 3. A boatman plies some kind of sea of clouds, with giant mushroom-islands in the background and the sky studded by glowing Jananda symbols. A doll awakens in a junkyard. Oima, I yet again have no idea where you're taking this.

Mizuha mentions she wants to "make this a world you'll like and care about", the Jananda triangle is a symbol of the Guardians, and you can see it on the logo of the Kaibara corporation:

So it seems decently likely the giant floating symbols have something to do with the Guardians, possibly blocking the extraterrestrial knockers from viewing Earth? Or surveilling them on Earth? Or this could easily be paradise.

Assuming it is on Earth, I think the doll is a knocker, evolved to control an inanimate object as its body, as that would remove Fushi's final legitimate objection to their existence on Earth (as they would both no longer be killing indiscriminately, and no longer need to use someone else's body to live). Assuming that's the case, there are several candidates. It could be Izumi's knocker. It could be Nono, who Satoru called a "doll" earlier, and who had very little impact on the story despite being Fushi's first real ally among the knockers. (Imagine how awkward it must have been for Yuki to know Satoru's true nature while being friends with his adoptive sister.) Most likely to me is Left Hand himself. Left Hand has unfinished business with Fushi, has inherited Hayase's twisted love for Fushi and Fushi "fell in love" with that doll a long time ago so clearly Fushi/Left Hand is a fated love.

However, a dark horse candidate is Yuki. This panel really stuck out to me. Isn't this exactly what Yuki wanted, to find out what makes knockers tick? What better way to find out, than become one? And it isn't suspicious that a guy who was so attached to Fushi wouldn't stick around him as a ghost? But all the knowledge in paradise would be useless unless he could get it to Fushi.

Of course, this'll probably all turn out to be off-base. Maybe the doll is a robot. Maybe Fushi unlocked some of Black Hood's original powers and made magic real. Maybe something I can't even imagine. At any rate, I'll be following this story until the end, so bring on whatever weirdness you want Oima.

My only regret for this volume is that it didn't end here. It would have been a perfect end to the series.

Still, I'm curious to see where it goes. The future will likely be more interesting than present day. I do find our age the most boring time period to read.

It was alright, hence the 2-star rating. This tied up an arc of the series, and I’m only maybe interested in continuing, the only real reason to continue being to see the “future arc” art and setting and everything. I may read volume 20 and call it quits thereafter.

I have not enjoyed the "present" arc. A lot of what I liked about the "past" arc isn't here. And so I am happy to see it finally end - though not without another volume that is just not as tight and emotionally or philosophically complex. I still feel deeply for Fushi, but I think that connection is still reliant on the first part of the story, not what has happened after the first big time jump. I feel as if the characters all froze in place for the plot of this middle part of the story, and not in an interesting way. This volume has some revelations and some changes, but they mostly only wrap up the current plots and do so in ways that leave me, at least, with some longing for earlier volumes.

This volume deals with the theme of acceptance and coexistence with the foreigner. I don't quite understand the legacy of the Black man, but for so many years a peaceful society has been maintained with the Knockers. I wonder if Fushi, at some point, even not having accepted his creator's powers, will then have to use them. It was funny in the first chapter when the kids were trying to tell the teacher a plausible version of the disaster at the school.

In diesem Band passiert eigentlich recht wenig.

As I mentioned last volume, it’s hard to enjoy it quite as much when my memory for the previous volumes is so bad (it’s been a long time). But this was still really enjoyable in a melancholy way. Lots of interesting themes of permanence vs mortality, life and death, identity and love. I’m quite excited about the future arc! Who knows where that’ll end up? When I read the manga online, I read up until here, the end of the present time arc.

I am SO GLAD this arc is over. The author really dragged this one out. I think the future arc is the last arc of the series. I may take a little break from this manga again before finishing this one out. This modern day arc was just dreadful.

"sorry, though. for creating something incomplete. to me, that was perfect."

well this arc wasn't perfect, but i really liked how this volume wrapped it up. i also like all the themes of existence here and learning about the man in black was interesting.

This volume started with a bit of a summary of the recent storyline, which I found super helpful. I feel like I have a better understanding of what is happening now.

This volume was a combination of random bits of story that somehow all wove together to tie off a lot of loose ends and rounded off this part of the story very well. The ending of Satoru's part of the story was almost emotional. Immo's choice was an interesting one and I hope it plays out well for him now that Satoru is gone.

The ending of this volume has another time jump, this time sixty years. This means some of the characters have grown old or died and the world has moved on once again. I'm interested to see what this means for the story now. This volume felt like the end of an arc and I wonder what direction the story will take going forwards.

The end of modern Japan arc. The man in black ceases godhood and Fushi rejects his creative power to find a way to live with the Nokkers.

It should’ve ended with this book, it would’ve tied everything up nicely.
They really don’t need to start another arc..
