One life for another; a mother's for her daughter's. A chilling sacrifice, proven to twist deeper wounds. Silence. I was born into its presence, and I died within its arms.
Asher's fists were clenching his hair, screaming into the phone, a parade of scared no's aimed everywhere. "Don't worry, Luna . Stay with us, don't let go." But we both knew. Olallie's blue eyes glistened with tears, knowing too.
"Olallie." Blood red outlines my lips as my cheeks catch imprints of gravel. "Momma." The first word, ever to be heard from my daughter's mouth. It hurt to nod, but I tried to smile. My fingers were numb, and I couldn't hold them up to sign. "For you, living was worth the wait." Even though she couldn't hear the confession.
One final exhale, starving to witness a few more seconds of my first and last love. Do you ever wonder if your whole life is a build-up of one moment?

This is one of the most moving books I've ever read! It strongly pulled on my heart strings and I cried a river. This is the first book I've read by author Laikyn Meng but I will be reading more in the future. The main characters, Luna and Asher, were complicated. They were two broken souls that found each other. The book also started the story of Olallie Lovett-Krause, Luna's daughter. This book was absolutely amazing and I can hardly wait to read the books that follow. This book is a must read and I highly recommend!
This is the first in Meng's Mum's the Word series and Wow! While a short listen, this listen packs a powerful punch. At first I found it was a tad confusing for me to follow with its poem-ish style and multi point of view with the single narrator but as the listen continued and I grasped the main characters and their broken-ness and pain as well as their growth I became consumed and overwhelmed. I absolutely loved the snark and come back Luna has thru this read and her strength of self - she is a force to beheld. A beautiful story of love and loss, acceptance and pain this listen literally had me in tears. Loved the story, the narration was good but I think would have been even better with a dual narration.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review. *this review is based on the audio version of this read
I found the cover and the blurb very intriguing and so I decided to read the book, I’ve never read anything by this author before but I’m glad I read this. It’s very emotional and it’s one of those books that once finished you are left sitting there thinking.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I could not put this book down! Luna’s story is so beautiful. If you want your heart to shatter in the best way possible read it! Laikyn has such a beautiful way with words. I loved every second reading this book. I can’t wait for more!
Muffle was on that surprised me. It’s also the one that brought the most emotions out of me. Going in I knew that it was going to be sad but I wasn’t ready for how said it really was. My eyes started to tear up. In this one, we are following Luna and Asher, along with Luna’s daughter, Olallie. I enjoyed the setup of this story. We get to see how Luna and Asher meet and watch them fall in love. The development between them was well done and flowed nicely. This is another book that has a part of it set outside of the small town. I like that we have these characters in many different places, and feel that this is something that is done really well in this book. The writer, Laikyn did a great job of marking you care for these characters. If you looking for a book that will play with your heartstrings, then this is your book.
I did not understand this story - it was messy and it was difficult to understand the events taking place and their order. The characters were not interesting and I could not relate to them in any way. I don't understand the choice of the narrator - she did no even lower her voice for the male POV. the author provided me an audio book version and all thoughts are my own.
This was an incredibly emotional story. It hit me right in the gut. Two very damaged individuals that truly want to love but struggling with how to love when they've never really had many positive experiences in their lives. It was almost like reading a classic tragedy where both of them continue to damage the other in hopes that it will bring them together, but continue to push one another further apart.
I definitely need more time to sit and digest this one, but a fantastic read none the less!
