"I had no choice. I had to go—for my son, my father, and all the poor souls left on Earth. I always knew our planet was doomed. I just never figured it would be during my lifetime."When the Fester takes over the Earth, the plants begin to dry up and wither away. The animals and humans succumb to disease and die long, excruciating deaths.
When world-renowned wildlife biologist, Dr. Daphne Blaine, is recruited by NASA to join a crew in order to find a habitable planet, she doesn't have much of a choice in the matter. What else can she do? Say no?
Mark October 1st on your calendars so you can get your hands on this!!! ——— I have never beta read before but when one of my new favorite authors👀asked for beta readers for a book that was totally different than her last one I was alllllll for it!
I did (unfortunately) realize after reading A Mare’s Nest that pandemic apocalypse, apocalypse fiction books aren’t really my cup of tea😭(even though I finished this in one sitting). BUT that’s no fault to the author so no stars are taken away and I’ll just be raving about everything else I loooooved about this book🥰
So first things first: most of the world has been taken out by a disease known as the Fester. Dr. Daphne Blaine, her son and her father all live in a Conservatory where she studied and cares for some of the few thousand animals still alive on a dying Earth. But something else is going wrong, which means it’s time for another space exploration to find a new planet. Daphne isn’t too keen on space travel—neither is her dad—but when she was asked to join a team of astronauts and scientists to find a habitable planet for the future of Earth she jumped on the chance to ensure a future for her son. What she didn’t know is that she was about to meet two very attractive fellow scientists. So now she has to help search for a new home with an added distraction. ——— OKAY SO this is fantastic. Again, I’m now realizing pandemic apocalypse isn’t for me BUT B.G. Thomas does it right and if I was forced to pic a pandemic apocalypse book as my only reading material on a deserted island it would be this!
There’s just enough world-building where you aren’t overwhelmed and you learn some details as you read which I think is the absolute BEST way to have a first of a series laid out. I don’t know about you but reading one book that’s all info and no movement is not my favorite thing. So world-building=on point, absolutely wonderful. So good and fluid and easily digestible.
Characters, B.G. Thomas, ma’am, you really have a way with writing characters that are SO HUMAN. It’s crazy. Daphne felt so familiar so quickly and Jaxon was adorable. There are characters I loved automatically, some that grew on me towards the end and some I never got around to trusting. So so good.
Plot, you know what’s happening as soon as you get through the first few chapters, but what the characters do up until that is still something to be seen. Nothing was overly predictable which is key for me in any book I read—I don’t wanna guess the ending halfway through.
The end, the perfect cliffhanger. Nothing to be angry about or sad about or confused about. It was so smoothly done and will transfer you to the next book so so well. ——— Overall, a great book! Again I’m not going to fault the author for my realized lack of interest in pandemic apocalypse books so I give this bad boy 5/5⭐️ and will 1000000% beta read the next one in the series so I can figure out what the heck happens next and if I’m on the winning team👀 (I’ll update my team when it’s actually out, don’t wanna give too much away) ——— Update: it’s been out for almost a month, I’m team Darrien!! Anyone else??
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this work before it's October 1st release date. B.G. Thomas did an absolutely wonderful job with this book. The world building was fantastic and went at a pace perfect for the storyline. My only complaint is that I have to wait for the next book!
Quick Synopsis: A Mare’s Nest is a post-apocalyptic Science Fiction Romance. In this story Earth has been infected by something they call the Fester. It started with the trees and began to spread through the rest of the plants and then into wildlife and humans. The main character of the story is a Dr. Daphne Blaine, a wildlife biologist who is also a widowed single mother. With Dr. Blaine are her son and her father, who is a former NASA employee. When the Fester hits, Dr. Blaine and her family- along with her employees and their families - take shelter in a Conservatory. This is described as a very large dome with many different biomes and buildings inside to house animals from varying habitats. This is where Dr. Blaine studies and cares for several thousand animals. These animals are some of the few thousand remaining, with much of wildlife dying alongside Earth. The Fester seems to be getting worse and this means it is imperative to take to space to find a planet that would be survivable. It may be the only way to save humanity. Daphne and her father are asked to join the expedition to find a new home planet by NASA and MEI (Mother Earth Initiative). While neither she nor her father want to go into space, Dr. Blaine realizes it might be the only way to ensure a future might be possible for her son. Daphne went into space with the hopes to find a new home planet. She didn’t, however, expect to meet two very attractive scientists on the expedition with her.
I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of A Mare’s Nest from the author in exchange for an honest review and I can honestly say this book is 5 stars. I read it in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed every second. B.G gives the perfect combination of world building, character building, and storyline too. I particularly enjoyed the mixed timeline, having chapters tell what was currently happening be intertwined with chapters from the past to fill in the blanks (who’s, hows, what and why’s) was really effective for me as a reader. I cannot wait for the next installment to find out what’s to come for Dr. Blaine and her family. I will also be adding B.G’s current publications to my TBR right away!
I really liked the world setting. The descriptions are so accurate that you can picture everything! The writing is also great, making this book easy to read and follow. The Fester seems like something that could happen to us in the future. It was quite relatable, especially after what we went through with COVID-19. I loved how some of the science is hinted at but never explained (like the faster-than-light space travel), leaving us with a sense of wonder and amazement! I would really love to be on board the Hippogriff. I love how professional and into her job Daphne is, you can see she really cares! But I was disappointed to see how quickly she changed in front of a good-looking man. I mean, you didn't have relationships in 4 years, sure, we get it, but there is no need to basically drool over EVERY single man every single time you see them or you see a little piece of them XD And apparently everyone on that ship is incredibly gorgeous XD
Anyway, I personally liked Todd from the start...I feel like he has a bit of Mr Darcy vibe. I'm curious to see where this is going, even though "love triangles" are not really my favourite trope - but maybe it won't be a triangle? Guess we'll have to wait for the next book!
Something I would have preferred to have is more emotional connections or at least conversations between the main characters. I mean, the smut was great, but I felt like it happened a bit out of nowhere? Where were the pining, the snarky comments and all the pent-up emotions that led to that (between the two characters I mean, Daphne had more than enough pent-up energy!)? I mean, there probably was, but we did not experience enough of it from the book (again, just my personal preference here :) ).
And I can't believe the book ended without even letting us have a quick glance at the planet!!! I'm so curious now, can't wait to read the second book!
So… On October 1st, the day after a specific person’s birthday 😉, a new book will be coming out. Y’all know how much I love books, hint people 😉, and this one goes in my must share with others stack. It has space travel, close proximity, and adventure all in one. How amazeballs is that?!?!
The Earth is dying and no one knows how to fix it. Well shit. 🤦🏽♀️ A small group of astronauts and scientists board the Hippogriff (Best name ever!) in search of a new place for the people of Earth to live. Dr. Daphne Blaine is one of them. First off, that is scary for so many reasons. Secondly, can I stow away in your luggage?
Daphne isn’t too keen on the idea of space travel, but she also wants to find somewhere her five year old can grown old and experience life outside of a secluded dome. Being a mom, that makes me root for her and everyone on the ship to find this new planet and fast. The girl has also been overworking herself for the past 5 years that she doesn’t know what to do with the emotions that run through her when she meets two very hunky fellow scientists. Focus Daphne! The people on this ship and those back on Earth are depending on all of you to find them an inhabitable new home.

This is the first book in the series and it is incredibly well written. It is sci-fi, dystopian, with hints of spice and romance that make it so interesting.
B. G. Thomas builds this futuristic world so well, with references to current issues and the fallout from that. The world is much like ours. So it’s remarkable and easy to comprehend. The main character is strong and smart and resilient, which is my absolute favorite. Not to mention, the love of animals which is so apparent in this book. It also has the cutest 5 year old to make you giggle.
This cast of characters is heading to space to find a planet to relocate the dwindling population of earth following the fester. There are handsome men, cute kids, genius women, and both an adorable dog and a cute kitty cat on board. The scientific aspect mixes with the romantic build up and the story is just truly mesmerizing.
The writing is impressive, and I found myself visualizing every detail of the setting and characters. I loved this book, even though it’s not typically a genre I gravitate to. Strongly recommend reading it and cannot wait for the follow up books to come out!
B.G.has given us a wonderful first of series book with A Mare’s Nest! First of all, I’m not sure how I got lucky enough to be chosen, but I got to beta read this book and holy smokes, what a wonderful read it was! This is space travel/exploration at its best. The characters and worlds pull you right in without being too descriptive and wordy. You get enough to build each without chapters detailing every single nuance.
A Mare’s Nest jumps right into action and has flashbacks to help fill in the whats and whys. Earth is dying and a new planet must be found on which to live and save those that remain. A group of the top scientists have been put together to do this. Without spoilers, you’ve got your good, bad and those you just can’t seem to put your finger on.
A Mare’s Nest ends in a satisfying manner and will undoubtedly flow easily into book two of the series. I loved A Mare’s Nest and absolutely cannot wait to read book two!
Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Steam: 🔥🔥.5 Darkness: 🤍🤍🤍🖤🖤 Sub Genres: EOTW/ Apocalypse/ Sci-Fi/ Space/ Saving The Human Race POV: 1st Person Daphne M/F (Possible M/F/M or M/M/F if this turns out to be a why choose) Stand Alone? No, the book ends on a cliffhanger and leaves you wanting book 2
I discovered a love of Apocalyptic Sci-Fi romance with this book. I don’t want to say who I hope she ends up with if she has to choose. I really hope it’s why choose though because honestly, I think the trio would balance each other out.
Meanwhile, the story is slow to start but once it grabs you it really grabs you. I did spend about 30% of the book wondering if I would finish it but about 30% in it really grabbed me and kept me wanting to read. By the time it was said and done I had not only finished it but determined it to be a 4 ⭐️ book I would gladly read again.
Take a chance my friends and push through the first quarter because the final 3 quarters are totally worth it!
I ventured out of my normal genre for this book and honestly I almost didn’t finish it. But I powered through and enjoyed the last third, except for the cliffhanger.
This is a post apocalyptic type of story where Earth is dying and NASA and scientists team up to find another planet to live on. There’s some unknown disease that is spreading from plants to animals and then to humans. The population is dwindling so the group of astronauts and scientists need to work quickly.
While in space, the FMC becomes smitten with a fellow scientist and their flirting is a storyline. But then the Elon Musk of the future is also interested in her and gets her to have sex with him…still not sure how that happened. The spice was good in that scene and is what kept me reading, hoping for more.
Even with the book ending on a cliffhanger im not sure im hooked enough to pick up the second book when it comes out.
COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE ENDING & TOTALLY BULLSHIT. But the sexy love triangle in space? 🤤
Let me start this review by saying, “If B.G. Wolfe/Thomas asks me to Alpha, Beta, Cappa, Zeta, Arc - whatever read a book…. I’m gonna read it.” I will second with, I’m a mom and have had VERY little time to sit down and binge but once I did, I was hooked.
Wolfe has a knack for creating elaborate worlds inside your head. She does an interstellar (get it?) job of laying the scene and providing details to make you crave more and more. This book is no different. I think this is one of the first ever novels I’ve said “yeah, no. That needed to be longer”.
Here’s my ratings: Overall Score: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️ - I expect we will see more in the sequel!
I’m so so so ready for the next novel, k thnx. Get to writing ❤️
The future of science fiction is here, and it's female. Author B.G. Thomas' Dr. Daphne Blaine is the character female sci-fi fans have been waiting for. Daphne is not only a mother and widow but also a scientist and astronaut, exploring space with a hodge-podge team of experts to find a home for humanity after a disease left Earth close to unlivable. This book is easily a 5 out of 5 stars as author B.G. Thomas takes readers on a thrilling journey through space and time with seamless flashbacks that add rich details to Daphne's story. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy today. But be warned, you might not be able to put it down ;)
This wasn’t at all what I was expecting but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well written and an original story.
I adored the FMC she was really personable and her relationship with her son and her dad was heartwarming.
Planet earth is dying and a group of scientists and astronauts are sent into space by NASA to find a new earth. I loved that this was quite slow paced and that BG took the time to build the story and the characters relationships, it felt natural and kept me wanting more.
I would say that this would have been a 5 star read had it had a little bit more romance/spice.
There are books that you read and even though they are fiction- sometimes you wonder if this is could our future. That’s what this book is…. It could be our future.
Thomas did a great job building this futurist/apocalyptic world Daphne and others lives in. I would love to see the Dome in person with all the different habitats and animals. The Hippogriff sounds amazing!
Team Darrien and Aster all the way. Also there is a space cat (well a cat on the space ship- but same same)!
The book ended on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait for the second one.
📚ARC Review📚 This book was so good! The storyline was simply amazing! I loved the characters! It was so good from start to finish. I really liked that the book had so much background information within the chapters but it didn’t make the book too overwhelming with the information. I was kind of skeptical about a book about space, only because it’s not really my thing, but I really enjoyed this book! It was also great how BG Thomas included the pandemic in this book! Overall, I really had a great time reading this book and I can’t wait to read more about Daphne Blaine and her family!
What a thrill, this book will highlight sustainability and mindfulness to start living clean or we might end up seeking out a new earth. I love the care for animals and the drive to survive. The struggle of taking children and animals into space. Navigating the unknown while discovering feelings for potential new loves. Can she choose just one or will she have both? Will Virginia be a life sustainable planet, or is earth left without hope? Now I have to wait until Feb 2023 to discover answers. Looking forward to the next book.
You ever start a book and just know the series is gonna be fantastic? This is one of those. A beautiful set up, a little spice and a beautifully written story all in one. I had such an amazing time reading this and couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to see more, but this is a fantastic and beyond words. A look at the realistic possibility of our future and refreshing world views. Definitely really well done world building.
I honestly couldn't put it down. I read the whole thing in one go. B. G. Wolfe's dystopian future Earth is a harrowing look into an all too real probability. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Absolutely wow. BG Thomas rocked this book. From the back story all the way to present day, she didn’t leave a single detail out. The spiciness was *chefs kiss* this series is going to be incredible! Looking forward to the second book!
This book was very good. It was a good look into the current pandemic but pushes it a little further. I loved the look back into the past and how the main characters lives were affected by everything. I loved every minute of reading this book and already can’t wait to read the second book!
