I know how villains are made. I’ve watched their secrets rise from the ashes and emerge from the shadows. As part of a family tree with roots so twisted, I’m strangled by their vine. Imprisoned in a world of decadence and sin, I’ve seen Gods among men. And he is one of them.
He is the villain. He is the enemy who demands to be the lover. He is the monster who has shown me pleasure but gives so much pain. But something has changed… He’s different. Darker. Wildly possessive as his obsession with me grows to an inferno that can’t be controlled.
Yes… he is the villain. And he is the end of my beginning.
Alta Hensley is a NYT & USA Today bestselling author of dark romance where the villain always gets the happily ever after.
Twisted, clever, and occasionally unhinged, her books deliver morally gray anti-heroes, sharp-tongued heroines, and happily ever afters that taste even sweeter after a little ruin. With a signature blend of grit, wit, and heat, Alta’s stories prove one thing: Villains deserve love too.
Alta lives on the foggy coast of Oregon with her husband, two daughters, and a pair of dogs who think they’re in charge. When she’s not writing redemption for the irredeemable, she’s walking the coastline or sipping craft beer in eccentric little bars that feel like they belong in her books.
Villains Are Made is a modern dark romance inspired by Greek mythology. In it we meet the Godwins, chiefly the twin brothers, Ares and Apollo, and his wife, Daphne.
Upon leaving the island of Heathens Hollow where Olympus Manor, the Godwin family home can be found, the brothers’ helicopter crashes, leaving Apollo dead. His passing provides a unique opportunity for the family to bury the scandal surrounding them and for Daphne to rekindle the romance with her husband.
The first book in the Gods Among Men series was packed with twists, suspense, and serious spice! With that odd cliffhanger, I’m more than a little anxious to see what Ani’s story brings in Monsters Are Hidden.

HOLY COW, I couldn't get enough Of Daphne and "Apollo" and DEVOURED this book in one day! I need to know what happens to the rest of the Godwin siblings and Ana, especially after that ending...WOW!
I have to say how appropriate the Dedication of this book is: "For every reader of fairytales who wanted the Villain to get their happily ever after." If that was you then you will LOVE this book because that is what happens here.
This is only the second book that I have read by ALTA HENSLEY and I am asking myself what took me so long to pick up her books. This story has so many twists and turns you don't know who to root for but as things become clearer about Daphne and Apollo's marriage I must admit I couldn't be happier with the turn of events. I bet that has you scratching your head wondering what I am referring to, well if you've been following my reviews you know I do not give spoilers so I guess there is only one way to find out...grab a copy and read the story yourself. 😉
This story does not end on a cliffhanger per se since we have a HFN for this couple, but it does lead you into the next book which I cannot wait to get my hands on because if it's as good as this one we are in for a great ride.
There may be some triggers for sensitive readers, the author has a warning that this book is dark, it is dirty, it's the love story of a villain, and to enter at your own risk. I'd heed this warning if you are a sensitive reader and are uncomfortable with NonCon or Dubious Consent.
I would recommend this book to those that enjoy STEAMY Dark Romances, BDSM Romances, Twisted Families, or Rich Guy / Poor Girl Romances.
Gaah! This book was such a joy to read. Alta Hensley knows how to write darker romance with scorchingly hot love scenes between the two main characters. I was instantly sucked into the story and I just couldn't stop reading. I read it one day, and almost in one go. I needed to feed my kids in between. xD Haha. But it is THAT addictive!
The book starts with two twin brothers who are having a difficult conversation. Ares is about to go to jail for the rest of his life. He is the hitman in the Godwin family. While his brother Apollo deals with the financial side of their business. And Apollo murdered a man in the office. It was filmed and handed to the police. But Ares takes the blame and will go to jail forever.
Apollo is in a loveless marriage with Daphne and they both want to get out of it. But the Godwin family doesn't allow divorces. No matter how much they want it.
Apollo and Ares get on a helicopter back to the mainland. But it tragically crashes and only Ares survives. When he wakes up in the hospital his father forces him to take Apollo's identity. So that he won't go to jail and has a free life. He reluctantly agrees. But now he has a wife... a wife that wants to leave him. And that kickstarts this brilliant story.
I love how dark and intense this book is. I love how fierce, loyal and unconditionally Ares loves. The dark themes really fit the story and the characters progres.
Daphne is fierce, fights and isn't afraid to show what she wants. I love how she explores her sexuality and isn't afraid to show what she wants and how she wants it. And those scenes! My goodness they were HOT HOT HOT! Alta absolutely nailed their chemistry and the fire that burns between the two of them.
I love how they grow and evolve. I love how savage they both are at the start. And her sister's story broke my heart throughout the book.
If you love dark romance then definitely pick this beauty up!
The only reason I gave it 4.5 instead of 5 stars is because only Ares' father knows that Ares is now Apollo. And none of his siblings seem to know the difference. His co-workers, friends, nobody sees the switch. Not even Daphne. And that felt really unrealistic. Close family should have known the difference between the twins. I could put that out of my mind rather quickly. But it did bother me a little bit.
And I love how the last chapter sets up the story for the couple in the next book. I am more than ready for book two!
REVIEW IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH // RESEÑA EN INGLÉS Y ESPAÑOL
{I'm sorry in advance if I wrote something wrong or it wasn't understood, English is not my first language}
This is the first time I've read an Alta Hensley book and oh my gosh... I LOVED IT! I'm really surprised, just knowing the tropes I thought I would like the book because it is what I usually read but from the first chapters the book hooked me.
Introduction: "Apollo" and Daphne are the protagonists. Apollo has a twin brother named Ares who is going to jail for a crime Apollo originally committed and they go together in a helicopter where Ares is arrested. Then there is Daphne who at that time was with Athena (the twins' sister) to ask her to convince her father that she can divorce Apollo (she was not happy with him), Athena refuses and they find out that the twins had an accident . Only Ares survives from that accident, but everyone confuses him with Apollo so in order not to go to jail he ends up pretending that he is his twin brother.
Incredible true? Well, that happens in the first THREE CHAPTERS, so you understand why I got hooked so fast. It has dark romance, billionaire, enemies to lovers, anti-hero, boy obsessed, mistaken identity, "amnesia" and good smut.
I loved Apollo and Daphne and the romance between them. It's a bit dark (because of some scenes where Apollo shows his lack of morals) especially Daphne. I immediately fell in love with her and loved how in many scenes she acted the same way I would but enjoyed everything else with her anyway.
Why am I giving it five stars? Definitely at the end. I was anxious to find out how Daphne was going to find out the truth and that little plot twist blew me away because she wasn't expecting it AT ALL.
In conclusion; I recommend it? If you like dark romance, YES. Am I excited for Ari's book? OF COURSE.

Spanish/Español:
Esta es la primera vez que leo a Alta Hensley y dios mio... ME ENCANTÓ!!
Increíble, ¿no?
SI.

2.5⭐️ This was an OK story, halfway decent even. But nothing something that I loved or would read again. I dunno but the plot and the pacing felt kinda weak to me though it had potential to be something better. Maybe if the author could have put a little more planning and work into this, I have no doubt that it would have turned better. The sequence of events seemed so sudden and unnecessary at times, which kinda annoyed me. The smut was decent and something I enjoyed reading. Overall, I don't think this book really was for me - no hate, no shame to the author😊
This was my first Alta Hensley book and I didn't really know what to expect, but she completely blew me away! Definitely a more twisted storyline - to the point I felt oddly uncomfortable. Some BDSM stuff I didn't see coming as well. Super smexy. Tons of twists and turns. The breadcrumbs for book two are fab. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
**I received an ARC of this book from Alta Hensley and Valentine PR in exchange for my honest review.**
"Villains are made. And you just created the worst villain of all.”
This book was so freaking good!!! So I own a few other books by Alta Hensley but this is the first I've read. That little "mistake" will be rectified immediately because if all the things she's written is like this I'm going to be a huge fan.
Daphne is not happy in her marriage to Apollo but after the unthinkable happens (I can't say because it's a big spoiler!). Then Apollo starts treating Daphne and their marriage differently, better. Although, she is a strong woman and when she "misbehaves" Apollo has to "punish" her. And O.M.G. was that punishment HOT!!!
“You are my wife. My obedient wife. Remember that.”
Villains Are Made does end with a cliffhanger but its about a different member of the Godwin family. Daphne and Apollo's story is wrapped up. I am dying to get my hands on the sequel! Absolutely amazing!
Genre: Mafia romance Tropes: Arrange marriage with a twist, Enemies to lovers Standalone: Yes Cliffhanger: No Rating: 2 ⭐
I enjoyed the first 30% of this book but later I fucking hated the characters. I hated all the characters and I can't believe hero treated her like that. But she was also dumb. I can't believe I read this. I loved them together but I didn't enjoyed the bdsm.
There was no consent as she was his brother's wife. I think he should have made cleared with her before punishing her. The relationship drama between them was so unnecessary.
Thank you Valentine PR for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Twin brothers Apollo and Ares Godwin are facing major problems that will change their lives forever. But neither could have imagined how big these changes would be and the challenges it would bring.
Having committed the ultimate betrayal, Daphne Godwin fears her life will end in the most horrific way and by the hands of her own husband. But Apollo has other ways of making her pay, because simply slicing her throat would be too easy for her betraying not only him, but the whole Godwin family.
Because I really do like Alta Hensley's writing, I have enjoyed reading this book, the writing was flowing and engaging. But this is not what I was expecting. The book starts strong and interesting, but it lacked the explosion I was expecting. I missed the ruthlessness of the Godwin men that is hinted at throughout the story. And Poseidon? What is going on? I was hoping for more of that, maybe the next book? Although, the frequent sex-scenes were hot and steamy!!
ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
Although each book in the Gods Among Men Series can be read as a standalone, it is best enjoyed when read in order, to truly learn about the Godwin family and their depraved world.
Totally BLOWN AWAY!! This book is highly consuming, intriguing and gripping. Ares and Daphne’s story is positively addictive. Get ready to enter into this intense, powerful, dark, dramatic and scorching Godwin world. I love tortured, broken and imperfect characters and this story delivers them in spades. I gobbled this book in one tantalizing and exhilarating sitting, it’s that stunning. It met all my expectations and them some! I couldn’t stop thinking about it even after I had finished reading it wondering what Alta was going to do next? This story borders on the depraved, it’s fuelled by lust and need and if your into hot, dominating and possessive men, then your in for a delightful read. Alta you killed it with these captivating characters, their twisted family dynamics and their enthralling, ruthless and enticing storyline. REMARKABLY ENGAGING!!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Now I am craving Monters are Hidden!
Hold a sec while I wipe my drool.... OMG! this was one sexy read! "Apollo" was beyond delicious, and Daphne was an amazingly strong character. She survived her circumstances, a failing marriage, her husband's family, and then her subsequent punishments. Little does she know but the Apollo that came back from the horrific accident that took his twin isn't the same husband she knew. He's different in so many ways and she's not sure if she wants to love this Apollo or kill him. He's darker and the things he does to her, and her body are torture but in a way she never thought she would love. Page turner from start to finish. Loved the stories and the characters and I can't wait for the next book in the series!
Villains are Made is a SCORCHING page turner of a modern day reimagining of the Gods of Olympus as a wealthy mob type family who essentially run the world. When one of their own is killed and at the same time they find out his wife betrayed them, their God of War finds himself in a precarious situation. The term morally grey is taken to whole new shades and their world lights on fire, whether they're going to cross the river Styx or find a way out only time will tell. Bring your submission, Villains are Made is prepared to take what it wants with drool worthy characters, forced proximity, dubious consent and so much worse.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What a spectacular introduction into the Godwin family and all the ruthless characters! Alta Hensley has written a story full of mystery, suspense and plethora of sensual moments. Villains are Made begins with twin brothers Apollo and Ares and the drama around murder and deception, followed by a fatal accident, and then impersonation and retribution, including a beautiful cage. A page turner and mind blowing story that kept me captured until the end, and what a sensational cliff hanger that was!
This is a well written book with strong characters and a dark and steamy storyline. The author does a great job building the story and pulled me in with all of the twists and turns along the way. It's an interesting story with descriptive scenes, moves fluidly and is a great read. Loved reading Daphne and Apollo's story.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
I just want to give you a heads up. You best be prepared for one deliciously dark, sinfully hot, totally twisty ride once you pick up this book. Ares and Daphne's story he's going to grab you right by the throat and not let go. I am posting an independent, impartial review.
La premisa era interesante, pero toda la historia fue predecible y no pasó mucho hasta los últimos capítulos. La escritura y los personajes aquí fueron, en el mejor de los casos, mediocres.
long story short. this wasn't for me. it started out very strong and the bones of the story are amazing.
× secret identity × dead husband's twin × 'punishment' bdsm × kidnap × captive × smut and character driven × no 3rd act breakup
but the more i read, the more downhill everything went. no shade to the author. i can say, the writing was done well and it was very easy to read. i loved that the fmc wasn't a doormat and the mc's had amazing chemistry. unfortunately, i was left with so many questions.
things i didn't like: •how can no-one tell the twins apart? •what does their family do???? they talk about how ruthless, "god-like" and powerful and wealthy they are. they even have an enforcer. but for what!? we don't see any of that or get any back story.
•the ending was sooo rushed. i wanted more time with them together as a happy couple •the fact that the pregnancy trope was used to save the fmc from certain death and every single problem was.... annoying
tw: there's lots. check them!
thank you sooo much valentine pr & alta hensley for sending me an arc ♡
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I didn't know quite what to expect from this story and picked it up for two main reasons; 1. I love Alta and 2. I love Seattle. I went in super blind, barely even reading the blurb and I highly suggest you do too. This story is full of twists and turns right off the bat. So many took me by surprise and I loved every single one.
Alta does such an amazing job with her morally grey characters and Villains is no different. These two are charcoal grey at best, true villains in all the best ways. I loved Daphne and her push back; at times I was shaking my head willing her to give in, but really she had so much fight in her and she wasn't going to back down or sit back and take it. He was ruthless in getting her to submit and when her degradation and pain kíñks came out to play, it got hot as hades in Olympus Manor.
I'm really excited for this series to continue and I can't wait to see where Ani's story goes. I'm already making wild guesses at who her pairing is, my fingers are crossed for baby brother Godwin.
Wow once you start this Godwin family book you won't be able to put it down until the very end. Once you are in the Godwin family you can't leave as Daphne and her sister Ani find out. Daphne is married to Apollo Godwin if you can call it a marriage. He's mean to her and then one day something happens and he changes... Has he changed for the better or worse? I can't tell you too much more or it will spoil the book for you. However, there is lots of hotness and some BDSM in the plot and it is on the dark side in some parts. I received an arc for NNBB for my honest review. If you love a hot villain romance with some twists and turns you will love this book. After that ending, I can't wait for the next book to see who Ani discovers in the house.
this was a fast paced quick read. i feel like concept was interesting but the execution was lacking. things were progressing too quickly and it made me wish the author had spent a bit more time developing the characters and the plot instead of on the smut which got repetitive after a while.
the vault scene was a big no. it was so ridiculous it made me laugh
This is a hard one for me because I wanted to like this story. I LOVED the cover (cover junkie here) and liked that the setting is in my area, but then I had issues with it from beginning to end. Villains Are Made definitely had potential, but it just seemed like there were huge missing plot points and lack of any real connection of a past and future.
The story starts with twin brothers that love each other so much that they would put their own lives in jeopardy for the other. That got me. But when a death happens and their father makes them do the unthinkable without anyone noticing because of something way too convenient, that's when the story lost me. I needed more. More details and for it to be more believable, not just because you're telling me. I'm trying to be vague so as not to give any parts of the story away, but lets just say that it missed the mark for me.
The heroine, Daphne, is a lost cause. I really didn't like her throughout most of the story. And this really hit home when she turned against her husband. This was a case of girl from the other side of the tracks getting the attention of a man that rules their town of Heathens Hollow (don't get me started about the name of the town and another book by another author). But when she is stuck in a marriage she can't leave, what can a girl do? A little arranged marriage, a little enemies to lovers and some dubcon scenes (which didn't bother me as much as not noticing things about the husband) made for a villainous story that I didn't connect with in the way I had hoped. I actually enjoyed the character of Apollo, the husband, our villain, way more than I thought. He is supposed to be the dark horse, but there's something about a villain, amiright?
I nearly DNF Villains a few times but the story was short enough to skim through because honestly, I was still kind of interested in where Daphne and Apollo's story was going to go. Dare I say I kind of want to read the next book although I really didn't care about this one? I'm a mess, I know. 🤷🏻♀️😂
If you like villains and can put all believability aside for the actual plot of the story, you may enjoy this one. It just wasn't for me. I was still curious about Apollo and Daphne's relationship and where it was going to go and powered through. I think the actual writing and development of the story was missing some integral points in order to be more successful, but did have potential.
1.5 Editing was okay and the writing itself was passable, but the plot and storyline, left allot to the imagination. The plot never resonated with me from the beginning seemingly something out of a contrived "soap opera" or F rated reality TV show. The fact that (the brother who is a killer) has no problem becoming his dead brother (who ran daddy dearest's business) and immediately started fu....king his sister-in-law); was too weird and not believable.
I am so tired of authors trying to call a story that is filled with submission, pet play/torture and BDSM a love story; it's not. The whole "Vault" sequence in my opinion did not even qualify as "erotica", just degrading. A story that wishes to combine sexual kink needs to have other elements in it to sell as a "love story" or anything that resembles romance. This story did not and spent too much of this book surrounding Apollo's need for pet play. Earth to Delphine...don't you think it's weird that the man that never showed a real interest in you sexually, all of a sudden does a 180?
It was a convoluted mess from the beginning with the MMC becoming his dead brother which he apparently was a complete opposite of and Delphine not having a clue that he wasn't her husband. How dumb is she? Apparently very dumb as she continues to believe he is her husband. The entire storyline with daddy dearest calling the shots and Apollo doing daddy's bidding, including playing husband to his brothers' wife was just too much of a bad fairy tale; nothing that seemed plausible considering all the players and the history prior to the "switch-a- roo" of brother number two.
The BDSM, pet play did nothing for Delphine's character, just made her look stupid and submissive and made Apollo just another guy with a need for sexual submission, blah blah blah.
I have read some of this author's books but have to remember to error on the side of caution when purchasing or borrowing her books, checking the reviews; because she can draw out a story that's not that interesting much too long with characters who lack depth and a substance.

ARC Review
Rating: 5/5⭐️ Spice: 5/5🌶️
Villians Are Made is the first book in a new series by Alta Hensley. It involves enemies to lovers, betrayal, and mistaken identity. This is a modern-day Greek Gods Retelling.
I've read a couple of Alta Hensley's, which I enjoyed very much. I already knew her writing style and the amount of spice that was normally in her books.
This book however blew away the spice ratings I gave the previous one cause this book had all the spice and some.
Apollo Godwin is married to Daphane, but the two really don't have an actual marriage, he is busy at work all the time, doesn't really kiss her, nor are they intimate anymore, they don't even share a bedroom. Apollo has a twin named Ares. Knowing there is mistaken identity in this story, well you know where this is gonna go.
The book is fast pace, with lots of spicy scenes that will have you falling for both Apollo and Daphane. Of course, there is gonna be big-time drama, and a tiny bit of mystery that should play into the second book when that one drops.
Alta did an amazing job writing the main characters along with the side characters. I am honestly looking forward to the next book in the series.
This is the first book in the Godwin family series. What happens when Gods are living among us. Well the rule the world. This family is full of demanding, exacting, intense personalities. This one features Ares and Apollo. Twins who have divided duties. Apollo is the numbers guy. He is most comfortable in a suit and is relatively level headed and calm. The there is Ares. He is the family fixer. He is more comfortable in black so he can blend in with the shadows. He had a dark side that seems to help him with his work. When Apollo is arrested for murder the family arranges things so that Ares will take the fall. And on their trip back to the city for Ares to begin his prison sentence their helicopter crashes into the sea. There is only one survivor. But which twin is it? Apollo’s wife Daphne is at his side when finally awakens. And she is positive it is Apollo. Even though she was trying to get out of her marriage she knows she must stand by him in this tragedy. This story is full of twists and turns. There is betrayal and forgiveness. There is dominance and submission. There is love and hate. Which will prevail? And can they find their Happily Ever After? I love how intense this story gets. It kept me up late ate night reading Just. One. More. Page.
I did receive an advance copy for my honest review.
I've got this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have so many emotions and different opinions, haha.
One thing I know 100% is this book is extra spicy 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶
I loved the whole chemistry between Apollo and Daphne. The only downside (which is not the author's fault, but mine) is that I already knew the minute something happened how the book is gonna end. I'm sure it's because I've read too many similar books, but that's alright.
There was one part in the book that for me was a complete NO...like I'd never do that, I couldn't even get myself to visualise as to be like Daphne, but after thinking for a while I knew I would do anything for my siblings...so now that I think of it, I know I would do it.
A lot of hot scenes as I mentioned above to the point I had to take a break. I loved each and every one! Usually I'd support and be like I need more scenes, but here I was like: "I need a break", but in a very good way haha.
The only scene I was waiting for the whole book and didn't even get it was danger. I don't know why, probably because of the lives they live, I was expecting a kidnapping with torture, or maybe just something really bad happening to h so that H could save her.
Overall I loved this book and I'd definitely read more from Alta Hensley...amazing book and I can't wait to read the sequel.
I don't know what I expected but this story blew me away.
What if Cinderella married the prince to get away from her horrible life.... But he turned out to not be prince charming and the life wasn't what she wanted.
Daphne knew that once she married into the Godwins family there was no getting out but in one insane moment she sets forth a series of events that changes everyone's life's.
Ares Godwins life is dark. He is the villian of his families story and he likes the darkness. Until he is forced to consider all of his many crimes. After a gut wrenching tragedy Ares is forced into a new light with things he's never considered.
Prehapes Cinderella didn't realize that there was a trade to be made and that she was about to find out what life would be like with an all consuming dark prince.
But will the outside world let them have a chance at their life's or with Daphne have to pay for her crimes instead? Can Ares adjust his expectations and give his family what they need?
This book... Is consuming. Like all Alta Hensley books the twist and turns are my favorite. No one writes dark obsessive men like she does. Or the women who will save them. I can't wait for the next part of this series! It's a definite 5 🌟 and the spice is off the charts! 💛
Ok so I don't know how to word this review. There were highs and lows for me. It started kind of rocky, I can't explain why. Maybe the present tense writing style, which isn't my fave, or some of the terms and wording. But the storyline was interesting! And this is a little dark and PLENTY hot. There's a scene that surprised me, and I was left thinking, am I into this? Maybe! And I like that Daphne isn't a weak little wallflower, makes all of it more fun.
Even later in the book, though, I still wasn't gelling with the writing. I was into the story, then a line or two would pop up that pulled me out of the moment. Does that even make sense? But here's the thing. The very very end? It made me want to read the next in the series! So yeah, I enjoyed the ride and I'll be along for the next one. Because at the end of the day, I read for pleasure and escapism and this delivered.
Ever wonder how the bad guy became bad? Genetics..just born that way? Or maybe Villains are Made. The new release by Alta Hensley tells the story of Daphne Godwin and the villain she is married to. This is a great story and has some pretty radical twists and turns. Hensley has always been a go to author for me. I know of one of her books and I know it will be well worth reading. With excellent detail without being too inundated with boring description The Puget sound and the island of Heathens Hollow beckons to the imagination. A heavy handed possessive husband and a headstrong feisty wife make for a very hot and steamy dark romance. One of the wonderful aspects of the story is that it continues in Monsters are Hidden and I know it will be just as tantalizing. 5 stars for Villains are Made by Alta Hensley.
