A superduper fun and cute book about a girl living in Unicornia (a magical town/world where unicorns live and magic exists). I loved seeing her go to school, make friends, conquer her fears. The art was cute and I loved that everything was in pinkish tones.
What I didn't like/didn't get was how the teachers all expected Claudia to be up to date with everything, they know that this girl hasn't been that long in Unicornia, has lived in the normal world for her life, and expect her to know all about potions, flying, and more. Why?

Claudia has just moved to Unicornia, a magical, hidden city that was created to save the unicorns from going extinct. Her parents, who will be running a shop that sells magical food, have failed to let her know that she will be starting immediately at the Unicornia Academy of Magic. This is a bit of a shocked, and since school is not her favorite thing, she is a bit apprehensive, even though the air in town smells like the cotton candy that fuels the vehicles. Claudia doesn't do well in her potions class, and in gym, she is supposed to fly, even though everyone else was born in Unicornia and has been flying for much longer. If she doesn't pass the exams, she might have to move down a class. She makes friends with Pippa and Sara who try to reassure her that it's not that bad, and that she just needs some practice and support. They help her bond with her unicorn at school, Chai, by showing her how to groom him, and visit a unicorn shelter with her to help her as well. It takes some work, but Claudia is able to ride Chai and do the tricks required for the exam. She now feels more settled in her new home, and is ready for her next adventure in A Magical Birthday, out in January of 2025. This Spanish series has seven books altogether.

Strengths: This is a super cute early chapter book that will be required reading for younger elementary school girls who can't get enough of all things unicorn. (Like the headband shown.) This book is about 125 pages long, but heavily illustrated, and the print is large. There are fun maps, lots of pictures of unicorns, and many details about all of the fun things in Unicornia, like a roller coaster in the amusement park made out of strawberry chewing gum. It's good that Claudie makes friends, and that Pippa and Sara are helpful to her.
Weaknsesses: While I understand that there has to be some tension to create a plot, I wasn't thrilled with the idea that Claudia didn't really like school and talked about her "least favorite subject". I get that middle schoolers have to hate everything in order to be cool, but I hate to see it slip down to the younger students. I LOVED school, and would have taken riding a unicorn as a challenge, not as an onerous task.
What I really think: Looking at this, I thought it was a graphic novel about a unicorn world that might work for some of my students, but it was a bit too young. It would be great fun for early elementary readers, but I'm just not the target demographic for this one, and I found it a bit twee. For a proper level of middle school snark AND unicorns, you'll have to pick up Simpson's Phoebe and Her Unicorn.

Claudia has just moved to Unicornia, a magical land where unicorns are real and adventures are magical. It is a world beyond her wildest imagination, that she can't wait to explore. But can she conquer her fear of flying in time to pass her unicorn flying test?

Unicornia is a very attractive looking early chapter book, full of colour and sparkle. A book about fantasy, fun, overcoming your fears and positive friendships. It will appeal to young students who love all things pink, sparkly and unicorns. A bit like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, Unicornia can inspire the imagination of its young readers, as they imagine exactly what fantastic sweets they might come up with, or what a ride in a magical amusement park might look like. Claudia has some very supportive friendships in Pippa and Sara, who help her to overcome her fears and believe in herself more.

However, it is only 2 stars for me as I found the complication and some of the characters a bit frustrating. There is very little tension in the story, as the complication is overly simple. Claudia is afraid of flying on a unicorn, and failing her upcoming test. However, at no point does her teacher actually try to teach her how to do this - she is just left to worry about being failed and moving down a class on her own. Her friends are full of encouragement, and some practical help, but one quick lesson and the complication would have been resolved. (Not to mention the teacher would have actually done their job...).

I found book 2 Unicornia: A Magical Birthday much more satisfying in terms of plot, so I have hope for the series as a whole.

Claudia and her family have just moved to Unicornia, where unicorns fly in the sky. She’s excited to start her first day at Unicornia Academy of Magic where she will learn about potions and magic. However, she’s nervous about learning to ride a unicorn. Claudia must ace the flying test at the end of the week to be able to continue in the class, so her new friends join together to teach Claudia how to get comfortable riding a unicorn.

This is such a cute, illustrated chapter book. I loved that the illustrations were coloured in black, white, and pink. Claudia learned to make friends who in turn taught her how to fly a unicorn. Even though she was scared at first, Claudia faced her fear and learned how to do it.

Unicornia: Learning to Fly is a fun chapter book!

I get this is an early chapter book but that doesn't mean the book doesn't need to make sense. We have no idea why Claudia and her parents move to Unicornia. They don't know prior to moving that unicorns actually exist, they don't know about magic, but none of this is explained. When she goes to school she is just expected to know how to make potions, with no real direction from her teacher (who knows she's new). Then, Claudia, who has never ridden a unicorn, is expected to ride one and the teacher gets mad when she can't (again, there is no real instruction given). Her two new friends encourage her to try flying the day before the exam and she finally does. then the day of the exam she is nervous but once she gets on Chai (the unicorn) it's like she's a professional. They are too many plot holes and things that don't make sense. Yes, this is an early chapter book about unicorns in a place called Unicornia, but that doesn't mean children reading this don't want a well-written book that makes sense.

All girls love reading fictional stories about magic. This is a very special beautiful magical story. I absolutely adore the pink sparkly book cover. Claudia has just moved to Unicornia, where it’s the most perfect magical place ever to live. In the land of Unicornia, the Unicornia Academy of Magic where Claudia attends is shaped like a unicorn, in fact every where is lovely and pink being shaped like a unicorn. Buses have wings and in sky has flying colourful unicorns. Claudia will soon have a flying test, she will have to fly on a unicorn. For Claudia this seems a difficult task trying to fly on a unicorn. Will Claudia manage to fly a unicorn in time for her flying test? The series Unicornia, is very girly, and perfect for a young girls book shelf. If girls have read Isadora Moon by Harriet Muncaster, you love this fantasy magical land of Unicornia. Thank you so much Walker Books for sending me this gorgeous book Unicornia Learning to Fly to read and review

Claudia is thrilled to be living in the magical city of Unicornia, a hidden city “at the edge of the map.” But when it’s time to start school, she’s nervous. She makes a big exploding mess in potions class and in Unicorn Flying Class she absolutely cannot imagine flying. With the flying exam only two days away, Claudia will have to get over her fear of taking to the air on a unicorn. Luckily, two new friends are there to help her find the confidence to try.

This Spanish import checks all the boxes for young unicorn lovers: a magical world centered on unicorns, with good magic, and where everything is soft and smells like strawberries. Poems and lists add to the easy text. The black, white and pink artwork on every page frames the text and will please the target audience. Claudia and all characters cue as white.

Why it only has 3 stars: there’s nothing new here. It’s got the pink, sweet vibe of many other books involving unicorns.

Claudia has just arrived in Unicornia with her parents who have started running a food shop. She didn’t know until two weeks ago that Unicornia was even a place that existed and now she is living there and attending the local school.

It doesn’t take long for her to make friends but she is finding some classes difficult including the flying class in which she needs to pass a test flying on a unicorn or she will be dropped down a class.

Unicornia: Learning to Fly is a fun and fluffy children’s story. I’d say it was for around 6-8-year-old readers as the text is kept to a minimum for a chapter book and the plot felt quite basic and young, it is a delightful read though. The illustrations are pink, cute and feature heavily throughout.

If you have youngsters who love unicorns then this book would be perfect. It is like a big hug in a book and there are even more stories to come too.

Claudia is excited about moving to Unicornia, where backpacks are fluffy clouds and lollipops can morph into any shape you imagine. But she faces challenges when she has to learn to fly on a Unicorn. She is afraid of failing the test, but her two new friends and a special Unicorn named Chai help her to overcome her fears and soar through the clouds. This is an imaginative and delightful romp for young readers. There are cheerful illustrations in pinks, grays and black on every page reminding one of cotton candy. The typeface, ample white space, and short chapters make this an inviting book for beginning readers. This is the first book in a new series that is bound to be popular with unicorn lovers.

This was a really cute chapter book with lots of pictures about a girl whose family moves to a new place called Unicornia. It's a magical place (hidden within the real world) where unicorns and humans coexist. She's learning how to fly and learning the rules of this new place. I can't wait for more of the books to be translated!

It is a very good book. The story is amazing and I think is one of the best fantasy books I ever read. I just think that the translation isn't very good.
