A Normal Person Doing Normal Things: An Uncomfortable Memoir

Rate this book
How do you find yourself when you've been given the wrong directions?

Jason is a backwoods boy with problems. Being gay in Alabama is hard enough, but God hates him and one of his classmates wants him dead. He dreams of escaping to California, but life sends him on an unexpected detour to Alaska first.

This witty, unflinchingly candid memoir steps into his uncomfortable shoes as he grows up and tries to find himself in the sinful world of sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll, and love. He travels from Alabama to Alaska to California and back, before realizing he might’ve been looking for the wrong person.

A Normal Person Doing Normal Things is ultimately an exploration of identity, freedom, and what it means to be human.

Not for sensitive readers.

From the first chapter, I was completely engrossed. Reading this book was a wonderfully uncomfortable and engaging adventure. This foray into the story of a regular person navigating life and its complications was such an enjoyable experience for me. I can honestly say that this is one of the most well-written books I've read in a long time. Once I started reading it, it was hard to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone that is interested in a brilliantly penned story about a normal person doing normal things.

I love memoirs. I appreciate people pulling back the curtain and letting us into the words of their heart and mind and experience. This was An Uncomfortable Memoir at times. But I needed to be uncomfortable and hear Jay’s story and grow from it. Good memoir, but his last words in the book made it all worth it. They were beautiful.

Raw. Brave. Vulnerable. Hopeful. The author has managed to do something that so many writing a memoir struggle with... having an understanding of themselves and willing to share it without holding back.
