A Full Moon In August 4.5⭐️

This was a unique quick read. I really enjoyed the artistic storytelling. The whole book had a calming effect on me as I read.
I think I was drawn to the story because it spoke to me as a social worker. I’m intrigued by people’s life stories. Even basic non-climatic stories. Just real human tales. There isn’t always a happy or complete ending. It was fascinating to watch Thomas absorb the stories as they transferred from his travel companions. Each one became a part of him. I really enjoyed this novel. I specifically enjoyed that Thomas showed growth as an individual just by listening to the stories of others. You have a 21 year old boy who befriends other travellers who are older than him and have been through their own journey in life and he listens to their stories from when they were younger. You don’t expect his life to intertwine so much with Henry’s life after, but that’s where you notice the growth of Thomas’ character. I found myself not wanting to put the book down. It was a great read

Following Thomas on his train trip across Canada and learning the stories of the people he met along the way made for a good, quick read. I thought that I knew how the book was going to end, but was happy to find out that I was wrong. The surprise (at least to me) ending showed that Thomas grew from his journey, and that the lessons he learned actually affected him.

I do think that a good editor could have helped to refine the book. There were some grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors throughout, but nothing damaging to the story overall. Just would have given the book the final polish that's missing.

All in all, an enjoyable read!

This is a short easy book and I was really interested in the story, however the ending was a bit of a disappointment. I feel like the whole book was leading up to "something" happening and then it did but nothing happened. It left me wanting something more... kind of felt like a dud firecracker. I like how everyone made an impact on each other and I wish more people, myself included, were more cognizant of that. Actions have consequences, it is up to us to decide if they are good or bad.

The title of this book already created for me a special curiosity as we all have our own interpretation of a “full moon” and what it can be associated with. Something mystical or life-decisive, or…

The main protagonist - is a young boy, who started his real independent life through his train journey. A long journey with a clear destination however, not all passengers managed to reach it.

The boy, Thomas encountered many unrevealed life experiences through the other male strangers’ stories which affected him and his life due to their authenticity and Thomas’ naive curiosity.

This book (for me) brought some different perspective and thinking about a man’s nature, or a “real man” stereotype which was imposed by society and accordingly the expectations of the man to act were pretty defined. But sooner or later the truth will be said and the inner burden will be released, just everything needs its own time, even though “sometimes the past should stay in the past”, as the author claims...
I also felt like I needed some continuity in this story or, at least a bit happier end, that we always desire or dream about, but the author didn’t hesitate to show how life can turn in a totally different route that we have never ever even thought about but just had to accept, which is not easy for human nature.
Great book, fascinating plot and exciting reading process! Definitely, I recommend it for reading!

Following along with Thomas on his journey was interesting. He meets a few people along the way and they each leave their own mark. Henry is a man whose dealing with his past and although his end is tragic, he leaves behind a lesson for Thomas as well as a sort of mission for Thomas. George is the second man Thomas meets who happens to be a barber. He and Thomas spend a short amount of time together while riding on the train. George even gives Thomas a haircut, and he too imparts some wisdom on the young man. By the end of the journey Thomas meets Lucy who ends up becoming an important part of his life. She supports him and helps him try to complete his "mission". At the beginning of the story Thomas is a young, inexperienced boy by the end of the book he's grown into a young man capable of understanding things beyond his years.

Great, short story. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

I read this book because of the description - a train trip across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver. Randolph has obviously taken this trip and he accurately describes the sights from the train as the trip proceeds. Thomas is going to Vancouver to visit with a boyhood friend as well as to get out of Toronto and his home for a change. On the train he meets Henry and Henry tells him his stories about relationships with two women, Angie and Cindi. Thomas is enthralled with Henry's stories. Until the stories end and he finds himself involved with some of the people in the stories. He also meets George the barber who gives him a much needed haircut on the Kamloops platform. Through Henry and George we meet other characters all of whom are well developed.
I enjoyed the book, having made the train trip across the country myself more than once at about the same age as Thomas was. My trips were more like Thomas' return trip though - I seldom met anyone who wanted to talk for more than a few minutes. However, the scenery is beautiful and it is a trip well worth taking.

The title and cover grabbed me immediately.

I tried to push through, but this one wasn't for me. I found Henry and his stories so very boring. I believe I heard 3 and 2/3 were just about his relations with women.

Thomas is at least somewhat interesting because he's just so weird. He has this odd obsession with this stranger sitting across from him on the train (Henry).

I skimmed to the end and it didn't seem to get any better. The one thing I did like was how the full moon was mentioned in every story.

One day, the man dies while on the train. Thomas finds out how he died and starts out on a mission to find someone from the dead man’s past. With limited information that is 20 years old, he starts his search when he gets off the train. Follow along as he learns about life, love, family, and disappointments.

Very different and interesting book. It is a quick read and hard to put down. Thomas's journey across Canda gives an insight of what traveling by train might mean and introduces several notable characters that he meets along the way. There is a lot left unsaid at the end of the book, but while I can imagine several different endings, this one worked.

I found the characters rather flat and static. It seems like the author was playing with Hemingway's literary style, with this homage becoming increasingly evident as the main character continually references reading A Farewell to Arms.

Took me a few restarts to read this from beginning to end. Although less than 250 pages, the novella moves quite slowly as Thomas journeys across Canada meeting new people and listening to their stories along the way. Perhaps mimicking the train’s speed on which the story takes place? The ending quote is profound but I struggeled with the execution.

Fun, short book that definitely did not wind up the way I was expecting. The journey taken throughout the book jumped at times, but captured a fun tale of love and discovery on what some would deem a routine trip on a train. The ending fit the story well and while may upset some, definitely creates a nice quick read.
