Kurt Busiek is an American comic book writer notable for his work on the Marvels limited series, his own title Astro City, and his four-year run on Avengers.

Busiek did not read comics as a youngster, as his parents disapproved of them. He began to read them regularly around the age of 14, when he picked up a copy of Daredevil #120. This was the first part of a continuity-heavy four-part story arc; Busiek was drawn to the copious history and cross-connections with other series. Throughout high school and college, he and future writer Scott McCloud practiced making comics. During this time, Busiek also had many letters published in comic book letter columns, and originated the theory that the Phoenix was a separate being who had impersonated Jean Grey, and that therefore Grey had not died—a premise which made its way from freelancer to freelancer, and which was eventually used in the comics.

During the last semester of his senior year, Busiek submitted some sample scripts to editor Dick Giordano at DC Comics. None of them sold, but they did get him invitations to pitch other material to DC editors, which led to his first professional work, a back-up story in Green Lantern #162 (Mar. 1983).

Busiek has worked on a number of different titles in his career, including Arrowsmith, The Avengers, Icon, Iron Man, The Liberty Project, Ninjak, The Power Company, Red Tornado, Shockrockets, Superman: Secret Identity, Thunderbolts, Untold Tales of Spider-Man, JLA, and the award-winning Marvels and the Homage Comics title Kurt Busiek's Astro City.

In 1997, Busiek began a stint as writer of Avengers alongside artist George Pérez. Pérez departed from the series in 2000, but Busiek continued as writer for two more years, collaborating with artists Alan Davis, Kieron Dwyer and others. Busiek's tenure culminated with the "Kang Dynasty" storyline. In 2003, Busiek re-teamed with Perez to create the JLA/Avengers limited series.

In 2003, Busiek began a new Conan series for Dark Horse Comics, which he wrote for four years.

In December 2005 Busiek signed a two-year exclusive contract with DC Comics. During DC's Infinite Crisis event, he teamed with Geoff Johns on a "One Year Later" eight-part story arc (called Up, Up and Away) that encompassed both Superman titles. In addition, he began writing the DC title Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis from issues 40-49. Busiek was the writer of Superman for two years, before followed by James Robinson starting from Superman #677. Busiek wrote a 52-issue weekly DC miniseries called Trinity, starring Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Each issue (except for issue #1) featured a 12-page main story by Busiek, with art by Mark Bagley, and a ten-page backup story co-written by Busiek and Fabian Nicieza, with art from various artists, including Tom Derenick, Mike Norton and Scott McDaniel.

Busiek's work has won him numerous awards in the comics industry, including the Harvey Award for Best Writer in 1998 and the Eisner Award for Best Writer in 1999. In 1994, with Marvels, he won Best Finite Series/Limited Series Eisner Award and the Best Continuing or Limited Series Harvey Award; as well as the Harvey Award for Best Single Issue or Story (for Marvels #4) in 1995. In 1996, with Astro City, Busiek won both the Eisner and Harvey awards for Best New Series. He won the Best Single Issue/Single Story Eisner three years in a row from 1996–1998, as well as in 2004. Busiek won the Best Continuing Series Eisner Award in 1997–1998, as well as the Best Serialized Story award in 1998. In addition, Astro City was awarded the 1996 Best Single Issue or Story Harvey Award, and the 1998 Harvey Award for Best Continuing or Limited Series.

Busiek was given the 1998 and 1999 Comics Buyer's Guide Awards for Favorite Writer, with additional nominations in 1997 and every year from 2000 to 2004. He has also received numerous Squiddy Awards, having been selected as favorite writer four years in a row from 1995 to 1998,

I was perfectly content with just the first Arrowsmith volume - imagine my joy when a second appeared at the library! And imagine my further joy when Behind Enemy Lines proved to be just as satisfying (if not more satisfying!) than So Smart In Their Fine Uniforms.

In the continuing adventures of Fletcher Arrowsmith, the world is still mired in alt-World War I and Fletcher is still engaging in aerial battles with vile Prussian troops via his dragonet-embued powers. The Albion commanders see something special in Fletcher and send him off on a secret mission...behind enemy lines. We meet a Merlin-type who begins to explain the world of magic to Fletcher. The world-building here is simply stellar - it hits a lot of familiar ideas, like fairy realms and old gods, but twists them in clever ways that exactly fit the alt landscape.

A cliffhanger ending might diminish some of your reading joy, but I was happy to see it because it means we'll be getting more Arrowsmith someday!

The world building continues in volume 2 of this most excellent series. We gain an understanding of the history of this world as well as the details of how magic is utilized. The art as expected is phenomenal. I’m not sure if we will get a volume three with the passing of Carlos Pacheco but fingers crossed this isn’t the end of Fletcher Arrowsmith.

Instantly bringing you back to the rich world they created, the only flaw is that the story isn't complete. Sadly artist Carlos Pacheco passed away recently, so we may never see the conclusion of the tale, but a beautiful and captivating tale it has been.

This is a sequel to Busiek and Pacheco's underrated Arrowsmith series from a while back. I’m happy to report that it maintains the humanity, careful storytelling, and imagination of the original. Well-written with gorgeous art by Pacheco (R.I.P.), Fonteriz, and Villarubia. Seriously, every page looks great. The story itself follows directly from the first series, as Fletcher is tasked with getting captured in order to contact a spy and potentially end the war. There’s more focus on magic and lore than the first volume, with a fair amount of exposition in the second half. This exposition is important for the overall story but it does drag some, making the book feel very much like a middle volume. Leaving off on a cliffhanger doesn’t help either, and I suppose I should reserve judgement until the whole saga is completed. So I do hope Busiek returns to Arrowsmith, even if finding another artist to match Pacheco is a tall order.

I really enjoyed this dive back into Busiek’s fantasy take on WW1. This time it’s focused around a spy mission into enemy territory with hope it might end the war, and the haste that Fletcher gets sent off with offers up plenty of paranoid tension with his partner and satisfying expositional world-building whenever Fletcher’s able to get any answers. I was slightly concerned based on the cover art that the story was going to literally or metaphorically include Ares the god of war as the grinder that soldiers were fed into in WW1, which is a fine idea but one I’ve already seen a few times before and didn’t seem very original; thankfully that’s not what the ominous armor-clad figure represents. Unlike the original miniseries, this arc ends on a pretty unresolved cliffhanger, and I hope we get the remaining issues of this story sooner than later.

Interesting fantasy comic series - nicely illustrated.

This is not a review of the Kindle version but a PDF. I've not read Volume 1 but this volume is perfectly clear. It takes place in a parallel world to ours, with the addition of a lot of magic and mythical creatures, during the First World War. Arrowsmith is a Columbian (i.e. American) "pilot" in the war against the Prussians. He is called upon to join in a secret mission and this volume deals with the first part of this mission. There's plenty of action and loads of magic / mythical creatures and the whole thing is nicely illustrated with clear, colourful, detailed artwork - and the plot is pretty good as well. I look forward to seeing how this progresses. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Finally got around to finishing this one. The art is just as stunning as the first volume, but the problem here is that because we've gotten back into this world, Busiek feels the need to really hammer home just how awful war is and that gets a bit too heavy-handed at times, marring the wonder of the world itself. He's also really really bringing the worldbuilding and it's a little too much too fast. Especially since we don't know when or even if we'll get more.

It's still a great story, but this return doesn't measure up to the first volume. I think it had just been too long. But Pacheco's art is absolutely gorgeous when he's given the space to just let loose, which makes this well worth reading. Just don't expect any closure.

I really enjoyed Arrowsmith when I first read it all those years ago. The follow-up brings the world into greater detail, which is nice, but it also reads too much as an encyclopedia. Fletcher is sent behind enemy lines and we get some amazing new takes on the magical world we've already been shown. Unfortunately for readers, Fletch's questions get answered in dull fashion as the chance for action is missed too often. This world is breathtaking and Pacheco's art does it justice. Its intriguing but too dull at times. Overall, great world-building but some more action and stakes would have made this much better.

Once again I get a chance to be transported to the world of World War 1. But WWI that has magic, dragons and other magical beings in it. The cold run of the war events and hot, raw emotions of the beings experiencing the heaviness of the war on their own skins firsthand.

This beautiful and messy world, conjured by Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco, draws in from the first pages. I was crawing for the continuation of the story read not long ago and here I am - sitting on a couch like an excited kid on Xmas morning and absorbing the pages and living through the emotions of my favorite characters.

(4 of 5 for this World War fantasy sequel)
After eighteen years, Busiek skilfully followed up his graphic novel about World War enhanced by magic and a faerie kingdom. And it very much feels like comics 20 years back, with all its perks and flaws. The art is very fitting and works nicely and the story revolving around Fletcher (but much bigger than him) is nicely unveiled. A lot is going on, but it lacks overall world-building and that reduces the "total terrible everywhere present war" atmosphere for me. Other than that, it's fascinating and thrilling and yeah, ends in the most exciting part with a cliffhanger. Well, it's been three years, I hope that it won't be another fifteen more...

This series picks up after Volume 1.
Lt Fletcher Arrowsmith is assigned a mission that gets him captured and put in a POW camp. That was part of the plan to get him in contact with a spy who arranges their escape. Then their mission in enemy territory truly begins.

Busiek and Pachecho continue their tale of an Earth with an alternate history, magic and fey creatures, yet still has a WWI. Fletcher learns, and the reader is reminded, that war sucks and is mostly those in power maintaining their power, no matter the lives lost.

Warning for potential readers, the book ends with the story unfinished. With Pacheco's untimely death, it's uncertain whether Busiek will continue the story.

Veremos.

I give Pacheco and Busiek credit for leaving the heavy exposition until this volume, rather than putting it up front in V1. That gave me time to get hooked.
Arrowsmith is set in WW I in an alt.history where magic works. In V1, Fletcher Arrowsmith signed up as a military flier (no plane, just a tiny dragon) and got a taste of war. Here he's on a spy mission: getting himself captured and sent to a prison camp is only the first step.
It's goodlooking and the story is solid. Unfortunately it ends on a cliffhanger; with Pacheco's passing, will we get V3 (it took around 20 years to get V2).

Volume 1 did a great job demonstrating one's optimism in the face of the horrific and Volume 2 excels at demonstrating the heavy toll those horrors can take.

Hits:
-Pacheco and Busiek are a stellar creative team.
-Story continues to balance engrossing world-building with small-scale character work.
-Magical elements and villains of this world are further developed.

RIP Carlos Pacheco.

Arrowsmith seemed to be an original work that went against the classic stereotype of a fight of "Powers of freedom" vs. "Powers of Evil".
Unfortunately, although every now and then the author tries to show how military propaganda is able to influence public opinion, in the end the story is veering more and more toward the classic struggle against an "Evil power" to save the world.

This review is hard to balance.

Given the way it ends it feels hollow due to the fact that there probably won't be another vol after the sad passing of Carlos.

All in all though it was an enjoyable read slightly over-shadowed by Arrowsmith Vol 1 but still a lovely afternoon art exhibit and story.

If it ends here then 3 stars if it gets a sequel then 4 stars.

An excellent continuation of the story. Lots of great info dropped about how magic works, and the final panel which reveals the big bad was suitably "oh shit" worthy. Can't wait for the next collection!

I think this arc was pretty much better written, better drawn, but less satisfying of an ending. The world is very intriguing and takes it at such a good step by step approach. Carlos Pacheco's art looks so good too, possibly some of his best work that I've seen. RIP

Recent Reads: Arrowsmith - Behind Enemy Lines. After 19 years Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco's WWI-with-magic series returns, as Fletcher heads on a mission deep into Prussian territory. A new mentor trains him in magic, as we learn the power of the ancient kings. Worth the wait.

Fun read.

I love how it plays on the concept of World War I, by inserting magic and subverting what we know of Europe and the various factions that make up the continent.

I think vol 2 was infinitely better than vol 1 and I look forward to vol 3. Hopefully it doesn't take another 20 years to complete despite the passing of a coauthor late last year.
