This is a wonderful aid to studying our great Savior. It helps us understand Hebrews, the book that reminds us just how perfect Christ is. He is greater than angels, the law, human priests, temporal sacrifice, and any human comforter. He is eternal God and fully human. He knows us, understands our temptations, and yet offers us mercy and love. Once the author has established the incomparable greatness and love of the Savior, Christ Jesus, he goes on to remind us of the rewards of faithful dedication and service to such a Lord. It really is the cure to exhaustion and carelessness. Ironside helps us grasp those beautiful truths.
I really appreciate the conversational style, clear organization, and textual focus. Ironside is very good at helping you understand the text’s meaning. If the text doesn’t call for immediate personal application, he doesn’t force it to apply. If it calls for immediate personal application, he helps you see exactly what God wants of you. It’s just so refreshing to understand what God is saying through His word. Ironside just wants us to know what God is telling us, so he does his best not to get sidetracked from the message of the text.
He does get sidetracked on one subject though. He spent a lot of time in the beginning trying to convince the reader that Paul wrote Hebrews. Maybe he’s right, maybe he’s not. The author didn’t sign his name so we can’t say for certain and maybe it’s not important. I have a guess, but I’m not going to spend a lot of time worrying about it. That might not have been as annoying in a longer book, but in this short book it felt over emphasized. Not that that should stop you from reading it.
Read it.
