A grim murder case spirals into a haunting vortex of sex and death.
When a young woman, Lilith Bain, is found dead in local woods, all the evidence points to her father as her killer. And when, after a couple of days, Gordon Bain finally admits his guilt, it ought to be case closed.
However, DS Hutton, now heading up the small detective branch at the station, is not so sure. If it’s all so clear cut, why is Lilith Bain haunting his dreams? And if Gordon Bain really is the killer, why are so many people lying?
Soon enough, while the confessed murderer remains in custody, there is a second murder, and Hutton and his team are now in a race against time to stop an escalating cycle of bloodshed.
A strange, twisted, disturbing story, told in DS Hutton’s familiar irreverent style.
'Douglas Lindsay is an underrated writer with an eccentric, blisteringly satirical voice.' Sunday Express
This has been one of the best series, if not the best now, I have read this year. Hutton and his crazy life have become part of me with the way he thinks and speaks. An amazing character with plenty of flaws but he gets the job done. This story really has you wondering if the start contains a murder or suicide. A theme that runs through the investigation and has everyone questioning their thoughts. A complex web has been woven by the victim involving family and friends. Now the wait for the next novel which I hope will not be too long.
Another great book from Douglas. If you haven't read any of his books you are truth about a missing out. There's drama and suspense and also laughter. I have read most of his series books and they are all amazing. Definitely one of the greatest crime writers of all time.
Another very good entry in one of my favourite series. Wouldn't want to be Hutton, but so much fun to be in his head, and another decent mystery as well full of the usual, 4+ stars
I think, after reading all of DS Tom Hutton books, this is one of my favourites. The story itself was intriguing, and I read the book in one sitting as I needed to know the ending. Poor Tom, he does make life hard for himself, though. One of my favourite characters is Eileen, and the camaraderie between them is great. There are no spoilers here, but an interesting development within their friendship has occurred, and I'm interested to see what happens next. Can't wait for book 10 in the series, and I'm really hoping there are going to be a few more to come. Bravo Douglas.
