I've had this book for a while, waiting for the right time to read it. It had to be in summer, in the heat. Terry Dowling's alien-yet-familiar evocation of the outback creates its own atmosphere, but I enjoy the stories all the more when I can feel the heat.
I don't think any of the stories in here will become my favourite tales of Tom, but they are very good just the same, and they bring us the answers to many of the questions posed throughout the other books. For an author who is so good at not explaining, Dowling has done a remarkable job of revealing the mysteries without any of it becoming mundane or boring, or leaving the reader with that cheated feeling that sometimes comes with the knowledge of what's really going on.
The previous volume of Tom Rynosseros stories, Twilight Beach, was my first Terry Dowling experience, borrowed from a friend shortly after it was published. It is still perhaps the best scifi I've encountered. After finishing it I pursued and devoured Rynosseros and Blue Tyson, and then waited fifteen years for more. Here it is at last, and worth the wait.
Now I'm going to read all four books again.
