I totally understand why this book won the 2022 RWA Sapphire Award it was fabulous from start to finish, it has everything a reader of a good book would want with a mystery, family secrets strong fabulous characters who are put to the test when a car accident turns their world upside down.
Sophie Keane is living a great life, good job, boyfriend, loving parents sister and brother and a great friend, but when her parents are in a car accident that leaves them critically injured, her mother in a coma and her father needing multiple surgeries Sophie gives blood to help and then finds out her father is not her biological father, this leaves her stunned and shocked and wondering who is going to answer her questions?
Oliver Hart has been through a lot in his life and started out doing medicine but that was not for him he wanted to be a private investigator so far his clients have been getting him to check out cheating spouses, he wants more and he is more than happy to take on Sophie’s case and finding out who her father is.
Sophie and Oliver work together with information and what they start to uncover is a series of dark secrets that have been kept for nearly thirty years, uncovering her beautiful mother’s past is heartbreaking, but Sophie wants the truth, she needs the truth to continue. What they uncover will shock not only Sophie but her siblings as well, getting answers brings Sophie closer to Oliver he is there through the emotional turmoil that is her families past.
This is fabulously well told story that digs deep into a family’s past, it is highly emotional at times, all the characters were so good but I loved Sophie’s strength and courage and Oliver, he is so understanding and caring, this is a story that I would highly recommend.
This Side Of Fate got me hooked from the very first page, the flow was smooth and the writing was captivating
Sophie's life seemed so perfect from the outside but her life felt like a mystery when she found out that her parents were hiding stuff.
The twists weren't surprising much but they added suspense to the book. This book was about family and the support thye gave to one another.
Tanya Nellestein wrote about Sophie and Maggie. They were strong women and they did the best they could to survive. They knew they shouldn't settle, there was a better life out there for them. They just had to fight for it, better late than never.

What an enthralling story. It hooked me from the get go and was responsible for more than a few hours of missed sleep. The grogginess the next morning was worth it, however.
This story contained a little bit of everything- mystery, crime, romance and yet beautifully walked the line between the genres without being confusing.
I'll be eagerly awaiting the next story from this author. Thanks for the opportunity to review this ARC.
To say that I am relieved to be finished with this book is an understatement.
Let me first preface this review by saying that I hate the idea of being mean and I truly do not want to hurt the authors feelings in any way. That being said, this was the worst book I’ve ever read. It was an extreme struggle to get through 400+ pages of a book that easily could’ve been half of that. The entire premise of the book is spoiled by the fact that it absolutely would never happen in a realistic setting. You would never get paternity results based on a blood draw in the hospital without requesting that information. Let’s suspend our disbelief and pretend we live in a world where these hospital violations do not exist, we move on to the sheer annoyance of every character in the book. You decide – who is more annoying? The mother who will not except her sons completely legitimate career path just because it’s not in medicine or the sister who is a raging bitch because she finds out that her sister is adopted in the midst of a family trauma? Tough call since they are both completely horrific. I started to make a list of everything that I hated about this book as I read, it was truly so bad that by the end I was just laughing. Do yourself a favor, never ever add this to your TBR.
For comedic relief, here are my notes:
• Everyone's cheating on their husband - with their secretary. C’mon. where is the creativity? •We must find my birth certificate!!! Does everything except looks for it. Tea takes priority! •“The relief of finding a parking spot after only two laps of the garage eased a little of her anxiety” …What? why? •You thought it couldn’t get any cheesier? Uh oh the hotel messed up the reservations and the love interests will have to share! •I almost gave up out of pure cringe when one of the paragraphs ended in the exclamation “Winning!” •Is the sister's name Hayeley or Hayley because they spell it both ways. Either way, she is the worst. •Why is this author so obsessed with parking?? I do not need to know where the characters park every time they change locations. •No actually there are multiple mentions of parking spots on one page, I am losing my mind. •The twist is, no surprise here, extremely predictable
Thank you (at least for the laughs) to BookSirens for the ARC.
Thank you Tanya for gifting us a copy to read and review. Legendary Viking author turned exciting new domestic drama darling is about to enter new territory with This Side Of Fate, a book with an intriguing and clever plot, a dash of romance and a dollop of mystery. Tanya guides her pen in a new direction and it’s a very thrilling debut indeed. A car accident changes everything for Sophie Keane and it brings her whole world crashing down. It raises many questions and she wants answers but the one person who can help is lying in a coma. Enter Oliver Hart, handsome private investigator who wants a case more interesting than the usual. Secrets, lies, deception and danger are growing and so is the attraction between the two. Can Sophie and Oliver uncover the truth…… A book you will not want to put down with a story you can’t take your eyes off. Readers will be dazzled by the wicked storyline, drawn into the compelling narrative, consumed by the characters and be agog with the twists. The pace is steady and it’s mysterious with creepy secrets. A suspenseful tale that builds the tension and ends with a satisfying conclusion. There’s a minefield of many attractive things here and without giving away spoilers, I recommend you read it for yourself. Get ready for your pulse to pound!
Despite a predictable twist/ outcome - I really enjoyed this book and read it in a couple hours. I liked the two main characters - but some of the minor characters and stereotypes irked me. Most of all I was annoyed by Sophie referring to her relationship with Luke as unfinished after she catches him cheating. Girl, what? Also the sister came across as a total psycho at the beginning but the plot kept me engaged that I was able to skip over these terrible plot lines…
What a complicated and intricate story. It was fascinating watching how this all played out. I was glued to the pages trying to sort through all the lies. This is very much a domestic drama, moreso than a thriller, but there was a lot to keep me interested and flying through the story.

Book: This Side of Fate Read By: Ebook and Softcover Author: Tanya Nellestein Genre: Mystery, Crime Recommend: Yes Spice:🌶️️ < b>Age recommendation: 18-30+ Years My feelings:
I have a secret obsession with Crime and Mystery novels. I really wish this was an audio book, it was so dam good! Or even a movie! Come on universe convert to movie asap!
The first thing he did when he arrived home was email his mother the names and birthdates of Sophie, Maggie and Radley. The second thing he did was phone Paul.
I love the character development between Sophie and Oliver, Oliver was so swoon worthy to! I have a secret \hard on for Detectives… Sorry husband lol
“Is everything okay?” Sophie was scrutinising him with a strange expression on her face. He couldn’t imagine what he must look like to her. He made a snap decision. “It’s almost anti-climactic, don’t you think? After the rush of the last few weeks, the case is solved.”
Don’t forget to grab some tissues, the past that is dug up can get a bit sad. Highly recommend

🖤 This book is a slow paced family drama which includes unanswered question and mysteries about someone pasts. Too many characters and plots which I found it was kind like disarray. Honestly I just flip through the drama scenes about Sophie's siblings and her ex fiancé. My focus is on her mother's past which would lead to the answer of who is her biological father as well as finding the real killer. . . 🖤 However, I found the ending was interesting and sad at the same time. As one of the quotes from this book says, "Grief impacts on people differently." I had to agree with this sentence. This book is about the impacts of people who are grieving and how they overcome it. Sophie is a character that would not giving up until she found the answer/result. . . 🖤 Thank you @booksirens for providing an ARC. I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
This was a great Domestic Thriller from yet another new-to-me female Aussie author. The stakes weren’t as high as some stories in this genre, but I enjoyed that. There was mystery and suspense, but it was entwined with themes of what it means to be family, what we are willing to accept in relationships and making the most of this one life. I like a good suspense story that also provides a spot of romance.
The writing was engaging and flowed well; the characters felt real and the situation inspired me to give my folks a call and see how they are!
While some of the themes were dark and disturbing, I finished the book feeling light and optimistic. I enjoyed that balance. Well worth a read.
P.S. I liked the main character’s internal musings re: her PI only having male Crime Thriller authors on his bookshelf and her intention to recommend to him some women authors in the genre!
Your Mom and Dad get into a horrible accident. Your Mom is in a coma, your Dad needs surgery. You offer to give blood only to find out you and your Dad are not biologically related. What would you do? This is the premise of the book, This Side of Fate. The accident turns Soffie’s world upside down. With her Mom in a coma, there is no one to ask if what the doctors are telling her is true. She decides to hire Oliver, a local PI to help her find answers. As the case gets more and more complicated, the two become closer. This is a great book with great characters and storyline. I would have like to see the ending of Oliver’s cold case, but perhaps there is will be a series?? A new author for my book list. Looking forward to reading more. Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book.
I've been a fan of this author for some time, and was excited to get my hands on This Side of Fate because I knew the quality of the storytelling would be excellent. I was not disappointed - there's a reason this novel won the 2022 RWA Sapphire Award.
Nellestein weaves her words with majesty; every character is beautifully depicted and I was immediately drawn into her world of family secrets and intrigue.
As an avid romance reader, I tend to enjoy shorter-form novels. And while This Side of Fate is a hefty volume, it kept me on the hook the whole way through; the blossoming attraction between Sophie and Oliver was delicious, and the twists and turns of Sophie's family history meant I couldn't put it down.
Sophie's world crumbles when her parents are in a serious car accident and she learns her father is not her biological dad. She hires a private detective to track down her birth dad. For the most part I really enjoyed this book and it had some unexpected twists and turns. There were a few things that made no sense to me such as her siblings reactions to things (and others I won't state so as to not give anything away). Perhaps not enough family back ground was divulged or I missed important subtle clues. In the end it wasn't important enough to the storyline. I highly recommend this book. It was a great weekend read!

The tagline “Evil hides in this family secret” is what got me wanting to read this book. I wanted to know what that ‘evil’ is that lurked in Sophie Keane’s family’s past. What she discovers eventually unsettles her greatly but Oliver Hart, a private investigator she hires to probe into the family secret, provides the calming influence that she needs.
Tanya Nellestein’s captivating and enthralling novel explores the depths of human depravity personified in one of the past characters as well as the depths of human love demonstrated by someone who once knew Sophie’s mom.
Sophie’s quest for the truth is indeed relentless, aided by the resourceful Oliver. This is palpable in the quick-paced storyline, which doesn’t give one the opportunity to be bored when reading the book. It’s not just the mystery that enthralls; there’s a dash of romance that warms the heart.
Did I enjoy reading the novel? Absolutely! It deserves my 5-star rating.
My thanks to Booksirens and the publisher for the pleasure of reading this ARC. This review is given voluntarily.

Overall this was a good read. Took a while to get going for me, there was a lot of emphasis on the accident where I maybe would have liked to get to the investigation sooner.
That being said, I truly enjoyed this read.
Sophie finds out the man who raised her, is not her biological father and she goes on a hunt for the truth. Getting help from PI Oliver, who's whole family are doctors and they judge him for his career choice. Both the main characters have their own personal struggles, but they make sense of it all together.
If I say more, I am going to give away too much, so read and find out for yourself who Sophie's father is…
I was gripped from the beginning of this complicated and interesting story about family, love, support, dysfunctional relationships, mystery and more. Sophie's dad isn't her father, her mother isn't who Sophie thought she was, her boyfriend is a jerk and that's just the beginning.
The reason I gave four stars rather than five is I was left itching to know what happened with Oliver's cold case, the search for Sophie's father starts quite far into the book and Sophie's sister's personality flip-flop is confusing.
The story is set in Australia, not a country I know so I really appreciated really good descriptions provided by Tanya.

This book is a masterpiece of writing that hooked me in from the start and I couldn’t stay away until I turned that last page. Thrills, tears, mystery, love, tension … This Side Of Fate has it all and I would love to read more like this from this author!
This book has it all. Its a thriller and mystery, with a great plot and characters that I related to. I was hooked from the start and it kept me turning the pages. The secrets and lies that people keep slowly unravel until an ending that is gripping. I cant wait for the next one.
I couldn’t put down! I was drawn in to how realistic the reactions. A long buried family secret is discovered leading to questions and search for answers. Realistic reactions and responses that moves along. *I was given a copy via BookSirens and am voluntarily giving my honest review.
This book covers so many bases for the reader. There is a love story, family mystery, suspense, and twists and turns. But it was the characters I fell in love with. This book won a highly coveted Romance Writers of Australia award and I can see why. Highly recommend.
I quiet enjoyed this book some nice twists in the story also the writer is a Aussie and with me being Aussie I knew the towns mentioned ect it definitely made it a more believable story… it’s well written
I read Tanya's book in 4 sittings!! I enjoyed the pace of the story and the characters as they developed. It was suspenseful, emotional, passionate with a satisfying ending. Loved it!
Wow, this is quite a roller coaster ride of emotions, tragedy, family dynamics and is one woman's search to find out who she is and where she fits into the world. Absolutely worth reading.
I must stop reading these types of books as they follow a formula and are very predictable as in girl meets a new boy after catching cheating partner…a slight mystery and a happy ending.
Author Tanya Nellestein has taken her writing in a new direction with this exciting suspense-thriller. It features lead heroine Sophie Keane whose parents are involved in a tragic car accident. This single event sets off a gripping chain reaction of lies and secrets, leading her to gorgeous private investigator Oliver Hart. Together, they must unravel the past so that Sophie can move forward.
This is a well-developed suspense with great characters and a mystery that will have you guessing until the end. I'm excited that Tanya has published in this genre as it demonstrates her versatility as a writer. Looking forward to seeing what she publishes next! Easily 5 stars!
