Saying I’m sorry now for the long review!
As of now, I really don’t know how I feel about this book. Our main character is a demon who is set to begin her studies at Vice Demon College, where she will find out what type of demon she is, hone her powers, and then be placed in a career that suits her powers. The concept of the different types of demons, their powers, their standings in the world, etc was a new one for me. The author did bring a fresh idea to the demon academy trope, for sure. I also want to point out that this book was hot as hello! I mean, it’ll leave you hot and bothered and reaching into your nightstand to take care of things yourself.
What I didn’t like, I honestly felt like Lilith didn’t have a true personality. Yes, we get a little backstory on her family, yes we learn that she took ballet and pole dancing, and yes, we watch her interact with her friends and mates, but I don’t feel like we truly know Lilith as a person. Or her mates for that matter. They all have something to tell them apart from the rest, such as one is the headmasters son, one is a kinky head of security, two play rugby, one is a nerd, but that’s really alllllll we know personality wise about all of them. I really would have liked to see more character development.
Also, Lilith is kind of annoying lol I mean, I liked her fine, but the author almost has a way of writing her as aggressive? Not sure if that’s the word I want to use or not. But for example, she’s talking to a friend, and and all of a sudden Lilith is “snatching” something away from her, basically giving off an annoyed or pissed off vibe. And this happens quite a lot. It was weird. Like there was no reason for her to act that way and it threw me off a little bit. If you’ve read this book, tell me if I’m just imagining this, please.
This book was pretty long. Longer than most series starters, and that’s not always a bad thing but I did feel like we spent a lot of time listening to Lilith talk about how she’s so exhausted and busy, hasn’t really seen any of her mates and is just going through the motions of school life basically. I’m sure this was meant to speed the timeline up a bit, because the whole book had been leading up to the summer solstice dance at the end of the year. I just felt like there was A LOT of unnecessary filler that could have just been left out. At one point, after complaining about not being able to spend much time with her mates, she’s planning to go to a rugby game alone. Girl, you just said you missed your mates but now you’re irritated because they don’t want you going to a game by yourself? Get. It. Together.
My BIGGEST pet peeve: and let me start by saying maybe this will be addressed later in the series? Maybe. A father of her mate, is known to have RAPED aaaaaalot of women before. Yes, I said raped. And this is just basically glossed over. Lilith meets this man and nothing is ever mentioned about the fact that she’s conversing with a KNOWN RAPIST, that her mate seems to have a good relationship with his dad, even though he was only conceived because his dad raped his mother. Like what? That’s not something that can just be so casually thrown out there and then ignored. Thankfully, he didn’t play tooo big of a part in this book at all, which is the only reason I didn’t throw this book out the window.
Even with all of my dislikes towards this book, I was still hooked and chose to finish the book. Hence the reason I don’t know how to rate this book. Part of me wants to just stop reading it because I’m not sure if it will get better, and the other part of me thinks it has such potential that is HAS to get better. I guess I’ll try the next book and see how it goes from there!
