When Jane and Phillip White buy a rambling old farmhouse, in the former Templar stronghold of La Tour Blanche, it seems they've finally left the struggles of their old life behind. Besotted with their rural idyll, their time is finally their own, until the unexpected arrival of Michael Brunt who entangles himself into their lives forever. And then there are the villagers, a coven of mysterious and eccentric French women who have an unusual interest in their house.
In La Tour Blanche nothing is quite as it seems, and Phillip and Jane find certainty slipping slowly away, as the careless hedonism of summer is swept away by menace, madness and murder.
Set over the course of one year, this stunningly written novella juxtaposes the dream of retirement with the nightmares of reality.
What starts out as a fairly typical happy-ever-after, move-to-France story goes awry. The house they buy, set in the wonderfully described beauty of the French countryside, is in need of a little more than a little TLC. And things get a little weird ... more than a little weird and then it goes dark. I can't say more without giving this well-constructed story away.
