Halloween Horrors: 13 Tales of Terror

Rate this book
The same trick-or-treater keeps coming to my house. He's starting to scare me.

There's a scarecrow standing in the vineyard--but we stopped using them years ago.

And there's something moving in the pumpkin patch...

HALLOWEEN HORRORS is a wildly terrifying anthology of Halloween stories. Ghoulish trick-or-treaters, gruesome jack o'lanterns, and faceless specters haunt the pages of this book, ready to leap to life in the deepest corners of your mind. Sit down in front of the fire, as the chilly autumn wind howls outside, and read... if you dare.

Praise for Halloween Horrors

"These stories were AMAZING! Gripped me right from the start and held on to the very end, which sadly, came all too soon!"

"I really enjoyed this book, all the stories were great and have the classic feel of a dark spooky Halloween. Turn out the lights and get ready to enjoy these 13 stories."

"I loved this book! All the stories in it kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t stop reading it! 'Treats' truly blew me away, it was so good!"

for a total reading time of only 2 hours, this book took me over a week to finish. i thought most of the stories in here were okay, i didn’t like a couple, and there were a few that i liked. The Halloween Song, The Boy in the Devil Costume, Street Lights, The Biggest Pumpkin in the World, and Treats were my favorites. i think it was such a mixed bag because each story was by a different author. this was my first horror anthology like that. still glad i tried this out though!

Not the best anthology I've read.

There were a couple decent stories, but nothing super interesting in my opinion. I've read other horror/spooky tales that were better and more fun than these. There wasn't a lot of snap here and I was looking for something that had a bit of a punch. Not necessarily gory, but just spooky enough. It may work for someone else though!

Eh...

I went into this blind as I had no idea who most of the writers were, but sometimes an unknown will blow your mind, ya know? But alas, it did not happen in this one.

Like most anthologies, you expect to get some good stories and some not so good ones, but this one did not have many good ones.

I kind of liked the themes of the first and last story but this whole book was not for me.

This is a brilliant set of short reads.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

My true rating is 3.5 stars

As is the case for all anthologies I read I have averaged out the stories for the star rating. There was some good and some bad but they were all mainly fairly nice though not scary. They all fit with the holiday however and that was the point. Of the 13 stories there were 6 that I found to be 4 or above.

4 stars, "The Halloween Song" by John Beardify. Small town residents have an aversion to a song that is hundreds of years old but they do not bother to inform new comers to their town. The song only leads to madness and death. The characters are good if a little thin on the details and the legend attached to the song is never really spelled out so you have to imagine what it could mean.

4 stars, "Street Lights" by Barry Thisbone. A mother who has always told tales and been a bit flighty gives her children advise about looking behind them if a street light goes out as they pass under it. The kids believe her after an incident that rocks them to the core. As they grow however they become skeptical until the unthinkable happens. These characters are well defined and garner sympathy easily, though this another case where you do not get any answers only more questions.

5 stars, "The Arborists" by Bethany Browning. There is a tree that was used in the past to hang women (witches) and is now frequented by both adults and children for various reasons. Many groups have created their own rituals around the tree but none more than a group of teens who call themselves the Arborists and make plans for Halloween that end in a way they never expected. The story is the thing even with razor thin character development and background.

5 stars, "The Biggest Pumpkin in the World" by Nathaniel Lewis. The Guinness Book of World Records send someone out to a farm in the backwoods to document what is being called the biggest pumpkin in the world. He tries to get a biography and some background on how it was grown but is told to leave before sundown. You can guess how that ends up and what type of story he eventually gets. Decent lead up to the carnage with enough background on the man from Guinness to get you through.

4 stars, "Dead Man's Fingers" by Patrick Winters. Before they built homes for the rich the land had been used as farmland by multiple families. One man wanted to be alone and tried to buy up all the other farms but they would not sell, and when they started to be killed he was able to get it. The problem is that people continue to disappear and a legend was born. Now a new generation is trick or treating there and telling the story. Could it be true? Nice lead in even if we get nothing about the story tellers we get a good background on the area and the source of the urban legend.

4 stars, "A Cold Night at Lilith's" by Jesse Gulbrandensen. There is a poker game going on and more than one participant is cheating but no one will say anything for fear of death.Everyone knows of the Donner Party and what happened to them and it is said there was a survivor, and he is present. The fact that the bar is called Lilith's and she is considered to be the mother of all demons does seem to have some baring on what takes place. This had some of the best character development as you got to pretty much know a great deal about everyone in the game.

While nothing here scared me they did make me think and pause. I like things that give me something to think about and I did actually have to think about how some of this was possible. I think anyone would enjoy these slices of spooky.

Halloween short stories from unknown authors

I was pretty disappointed as the target audience for this collection of short stories seem to be 9-12 years old. The stories were more “Goosebumps” than anything else. Many of the stories were written well but either lacked cohesion or the endings were just blah. All the authors were unknown to me.

Best story by far was the last story called “Treats” by Jason Fischer. Dark and vicious with a conclusion that made sense. Excellent!

I picked up this book because I saw there was a story by Blair Daniels in it, and I loved the stories by Blair Daniels I have read before. This book did not disappoint!
There are 13 horror stories by different authors and almost all of those were great. Ok, one was kind of a meh one, but the other 12 were awesome! If you like horror stories that are somewhat real-life based (like, happens in the world we live in, not in a parallel fantasy universe), this quick and fun read is a good one.

I really enjoyed this book and there were so many stories that stood out for me. The last story was a great way to end the book with a bang! This is a perfect book to read out loud. Perfect book to read leading up to Halloween but fun for any season! Pop yourself some popcorn and get ready for some chills and thrills!

My teens and I enjoy books with little horror stories and this book lives up to that. It has 13 engaging stories that weren't boring and didn't drag on. I feel each story was perfect in its own way. I feel it has re-read factors for sure and I am sure this will be something I'll be reading every October when getting into the horror mood. I am glad I read this!

I love halloween and this book made me want it to be day 31 already. The tales were original and honestly very interesting. And one thing that I definetly enjoy was the fact that they were all small storys, so read them was easy and not at all tiring. I just wish that some of them were a little bit scarier or with plot twist more intense.

Each story in the book is entertaining and absorbing. Street lights which are fatal, treats on Halloween which have terrifying consequences and a scarecrow from hell apart from more terrifying tales gave me the shivers. Well put together anthology. Love this author's books.

This book has some fun and creepy stories. As an adult I didn’t find the stories super scary, but there is some really great creep factors that still made me uncomfortable, which is what you want when telling scary stories.

As with any anthology, not all of the stories are hits. However there are a lot that are very fun and brought me a nostalgic feeling of reading R.L. Stein story collections as a kid but more mature.
Perfect little fun collection for October.

Great Halloween Vibes

For the most part the stories in this collection did an amazing job in getting me into the Halloween spirit. There are a couple of iffy ones but not a terrible story in the batch.
