Shattered Bond

Rate this book
Know your enemy…Only werewolves have fated mates—until me.

During a full moon, my fleabag masters earn their wolves. But everything I thought I knew about myself changes when I start shifting along with them. How could this be? I’m human.

Then my fated mate is revealed to me. The worst part is, he’s the alpha of the pack, the one who’s tormented me for years.

I’m fated to my enemy. And now I’m becoming one of them.

When he rejects me, it crushes me. As if that weren’t painful enough, he then orders the pack to kill me, forcing me to flee. But the alpha has a way of tracking me. I’m constantly on the run until I meet Jonas, whose ego is bigger than his muscles. For refuge, we’re forced to stay with a colony of vampires who wield Shadow magic and think polka dot pajamas are all the rage.

Jonas’s protection is temporary, which is fine because I despise him. Yet when I’m not thinking of how to make his life miserable, I can’t help but stare at his lips. Can I trust him?

One thing’s for sure, the alpha won’t stop hunting me until either of us is dead or I’m fully bonded with another.

Shattered Bond is the first of two steamy, paranormal romance books in the Shadow and Light duology.

Crazy Good

*****Spoilers*****

Oh goodness me, this one was very good, amazingly well written and complex enough to keep me glued to the pages. Kiara is a Light Witch who can't seem to actually perform the magic, and enslaved to a werewolf Alpha shifter Malachi. We're given a look into what her life is like which is brutal at times, but luckily, her friend August is around consistently to help her hide the fact that she can't do the spells. Since the Light Witches are like the shield and attack force for the wolves, her usefulness is non-existent and her life would be with it if the wolves found out. Kiara is an orphan who was dropped off at the wolf enclave at the age of 10 with no memories prior to that date. During an annual wolf rite, Kiara, a human, begins to shift into a wolf with the rest of the newly initiated 20-year-old first time shifters even though she's 22. Not only that, but she and Malachi realize that they're fated mates. Almost before the idea can form into how this might be an enemies to lovers story, Malachi rejects the claim and Kiara, then orders his wolves to kill her. August comes to the rescue again and they take off together on a desperate bid to escape the Alpha's death sentence. However, they don't escape together since August is killed during the mad dash but not before using his Light magic to hot wire a car which is what eventually allows Kiara to escape.

Even though she's gone from pack lands, Kiara isn't safe because the Alpha and his pack continue to chase her as she desperately tries to get away. That's when she meets Jonas, a loner Alpha wolf shifter with his sleezy pickup lines and leers. Kiara stopped to eat at a diner and gives Jonas choice words and tells him to back off. However, they wind up together because he saves her from Malachi's pack and they take off on the run together, on the way into vampire territory where Jonas has favors owed from a couple of powerful vampires Cyrus and Alexander. At one point, Jonas decides to trade Kiara for information on his old pack to the Supernatural police agency, but that doesn't pan out. Instead, Kiara and Jonas head to the vampire friends and should be safe since vampires and wolves are enemies with territories carved out, this one within that of the vampire queen no less. But, Malachi's network comes calling and the rest of the book is about Kiara and Jonas discovering who they are through a partial mate bond which purpose was to hide Kiara from Malachi, obtaining knowledge about the supernatural from the 600 year old vampires, discovering more about Kiara and the prophecy that's tied to her, and fighting. A lot. Where Kiara gets beat up. A lot. But also eventually learns how to wield her powers which are different than the Light.

I liked the characters and especially appreciated how different they all were. Jonas I was surprised to see how quickly he went from not wanting to be a mate to feeling strongly for Kiara. I give it the benefit of the doubt for how quickly they both fell by the end of the book, but given the constant time they spent together and the mate bond, I give it a pass. Their chemistry is good, but there's a lot of almost to them getting together until the end of the book when they finally make their way together physically.

There were some inconsistencies but I very much appreciated how the author addressed certain information with a mind to it, and explained those instances or had the characters wonder about it because they didn't know either. I will say I was puzzled at how ignorant Kiara seemed of wolves when she lived with them for so long, at least outside of knowledge of battle formations. I can admit to being so disappointed when August died but understand that had he lived, it would've added more complexity since he had a slave mark that required him to be within a certain distance of one of Malachi's pack members.

All in all, this book was terrific and I'm sorely disappointed that I read it because the next in the series doesn't come until way too many months from now. The good thing I guess is that I'll get to read this one over to remember the characters and dynamics before getting into that one when it's published.

This story started off strong and was filled with action, betrayal, and plenty of twists and turns! The world building and mythology were interesting, from pack politics, to the supernatural law enforcement, and vampire renegades.
Kiara's life goes from bad to worse when she partially turns into a wolf and discovers her terrible abusive alpha is her fated mate. Because the alpha decides she must die. So she goes on the run and meets a rather disagreeable fellow...who may or may not be willing to help her.
I liked Kiara. She had heart despite her horrible start in life and her life just gets crazier as it goes. She is quite the resourceful person, even with her semi-shelter life. Jonas was an interesting character. He's a bit vague with his previous life, but he has his reasons.
I enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot, I never knew what was going to happen next.
I look forward to the second in the duology and hope the release day gets moved up!

TW: There is torture and violence depicted on page.
There is also swearing, violence, and a little steamy.

This book sits in a world where human magic wielders are light witches enslaves by werewolves, and vampires are the enemy. All her life orphan Kiara has searched for information about her family as she has no memory of her past beyond being dropped off at the werewolves domain at the age of 10 years old. However during a full moon ceremony, something so unexpected and terrifying happens to Kiara that she immediately question's her whole existence, and is left running for her life away from her fated mate. She is relentlessly hunted, but with the aid of a handsome rogue werewolf she finds refuge in a den of vampires. Danger is everywhere, it is difficult to determine friend from foe, and love from lust. In trying to survive her ordeal, Kiara finds out that she is no ordinary witch.

I am not usually a fan of werewolf/vampire stories, but the description of this one sounded so interesting I wanted to give it a try, and I'm so glad I did because I loved it! This is not your usual 'fated mates/enemies to lovers' romance, it is so much more. This book is so well written, has a lot of depth, full of action, mystery, romance, has a great storyline and strong interesting characters. I read it in two days and only paused (reluctantly) to sleep, I was that intrigued by the story. I would definitely highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next in this series.

I was given this book for free of my own choosing and I voluntarily left this review.

I want to give this book 4 stars so bad but I just can’t get over the main Female character. I understand to a point her experience in the pack had affected her and diminished her drive but still, I thought she would have grown into herself. I guess eventually she did at the very end but halfway through after she shifted should have been the point for that to start happening but instead she calls the cops? No. I couldn’t do it. After that scene I literally kept skimming through waiting for her to figure herself out. Granted her mental strength was great she just didn’t have that great of a follow- through until it was the only option for her and Beck.

I don't think this book should be categorized under romance since it's really mainly fantasy and adventure.

Anyway, this book is a great read. I usually hate first person point of view when it comes to reading fantasy and adventure books. This book is so entertaining to read that I push away my personal grievance about reading first person POV. While this book does contain some typos and punctuation errors, the errors aren't egregious. I simply chalk it as editor not doing the job right.

Overall, I really enjoy the pace of the plot and characterization in this book. Kiara is a great character who is cunning and practical.

fascinating plot

There are many things I disliked about this book. But just as many things I liked about this book. I absolutely loved that even though this was a mate trope it wasn’t insta love. That alone saved this book from being 2 stars.

Jonas was a interesting male lead. However Keira annoyed the hell outta me too many times to count. There were times she seemed like a badass but she made too many stupid decisions, mistakes, and choices for my liking. Damn near ever physical altercation she got her ass handed to her. She didn’t have to be GI Jane but wow she sucks. She has this beautiful wolf that she barely gave any play to so she could kick ass.

The wolf slaves was an interesting take. The Vampire queen is a ruthless heartless bih. The Renegade are interesting as well. The abilities that the vampires wield is new and amazes me. All the these badass factions I find it hard to believe that are able to keep themselves a secret from humans.

This would have been way better if humans were aware of the supernatural and the SDA was a source of protection for humans as well as regulating the supernatural. I’ll be reading the next book because I do like the plot.

Shattered Bond is a story about a sun witch, Kiara, whose life takes an unexpected turn. One of the twists that I enjoyed, was how the witches were kept as slaves. Definitely made it interesting for me!

Kiara ends up meeting a rogue alpha, Jonas, while on the run from Malachi, the leader of the werewolf pack Kiara is from. The twists and turns regarding everyone's relationship was good, but I definitely think Kiara and Jonas's relationship could have used more development. With that being said, apparently this is book one, so we'll see how the rest of the series turns out.

I enjoyed the vampires found in the story and the fact that some of the vampires had magic as well!

Personally, I thought it was such a good book. I enjoyed reading it and have ended up with so many questions. I can't wait to read the second part!

*I did receive a free arc copy for my honest review.

This story is quite different from other books I have read in this genre. Shifters hold human light witches slaves and treat them badly.

Kiara is a human held as a slave by werewolves and learns that her fated mate is Alpha General Malachi Crane of the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Pack.

This is the story of how she escapes slavery, learns she is a hybrid and meets Jonas another Alpha werewolf.

This is a paranormal romance with werewolves, vampires and witches. There is betrayal, action, adventure, steamy scenes and suspense.

love this book!

Kiara Blackwood can’t remember anything from before she was 10 years old and was left by the gates of Bristol Falls Pack. Growing up Kiara always thought she was a witch that could not wield magic like everyone else. She felt like a prisoner, trapped, and abused. Until one day she finally escapes. I definitely recommend this book! Jonas and Kiara are of course one of my favorite characters the only thing about Kiara is she kept lying to the vampire renegade and put everyone’s life in danger. I also love Beck, Cyrus, and Alexander!

I already preordered the second book in the series

Goodread

I was kinda disappointed in this book Overall I understood the plot of the story. I wish Kiera have more powers And I loved her Jonas relationship. I thought the vampires were pretty cool in this book and I love their powers . If it's gonna be a part 2 I hope Jonas and kiara find their loves and I hope she blossoms into her powers And I hope Jonas could become the alpha that he is.

Journey, Action, Mystery- Good Stuff

A story with a strong MC following the Journey trope. Within this particular journey there’s action, discovery, and a stories within a story.

The relationships with the MC could’ve been explored a bit more, but all in all, the author keeps it respectable and acceptable.

I really enjoyed reading this story and look forward to more.

Kiara and Jonas

Lots of action and magic. Kiara doesn't know who she is or her family. She's on a mission to find out. Jonas is on the journey for his own reason. Lot of issues get revealed and a little romance.

I ate this book up!!

Kiara may not be the fiercest, has it all together type of heroine, but she's resilient. Although at times, I wanted to box her ears a time or five.
The twists and turns weren't cliche and the story never stalls. It was a very enjoyable read.

Slow read

It took a long time to get into this book and forever for Kiara to finally get a bit of information on who/what she is. No spice until near the end and she just seemed useless all the time. Not sure if I'll read the next book whenever it comes out.

Werewolves, vampires, and witches made this book an adventure it itself! I enjoyed the action the first half of the book, although it slowed down a bit in the middle. Kiara was a great character that was very relatable. Overall, a book worth reading.

Exciting Black Girl Magic

I just finished reading "Shattered Bond" by Ava Slade, and I am absolutely blown away! This book took me on an electrifying adventure filled with supernatural elements and captivating characters. It's a refreshing departure from the usual tropes where the female lead is often portrayed as TSTL and the male lead as an all-knowing, physically attractive thug.

Instead, we are introduced to a fierce black female protagonist who has endured both mental and physical abuse. She uses her experiences to forge an unbreakable character. The book beautifully depicts her growth and the gradual acquisition of her powers in vivid detail. Meanwhile, the male lead presents us with intriguing motives, questionable yet honorable, that drive his actions. He isn't the typical all-powerful alpha but a relatable individual with vulnerabilities.

The supporting characters in the story fulfill their roles admirably, providing essential information, aiding in the main characters' growth, and contributing to the overall narrative. The author's writing style is commendable, perfectly balancing descriptive prose and a gripping storyline. The pacing is impeccable, with well-crafted climactic moments that kept me on the edge of my seat, and I finished the book in one night.

But what truly sets this book apart is the world-building. Vampires, werewolves, witches, and humans seamlessly come together into a magical realm that feels like it could be taking place right under our noses. The immersive and well-thought-out nature of the story is a testament to Ava Slade's skill.

And let's talk about the romance - it's steamy, it's realistic, and it's immersive, drawing readers into the experiences of the female lead and making them feel like they are right there with her
