The Unbreakable

Rate this book
"The Unbreakable" is a book about the culture of remembrance and the phenomenon of human perseverance.
This book is a story about the perseverance of 16 people who survived the longest known siege of a capital city in human history and despite all losses, managed to continue their life's journey.
In addition to war, which is the central theme of the book, the author tried to somehow convey the shock these people went through when they left the golden eighties of the city of Sarajevo directly into the worst possible horror, and then, when everything finally ended and freedom awaited them, how they endured disappointment with the state in which society finds itself to this day.

A book about the humans that went through the war in Bosnia through a real and very human perspective.

The author has allowed the individuals to tell their stories with their own voice and has sensitively and beautifully included a huge diversity of voices to be heard - women, men, doctors, teachers, artists, those of Muslim faith, Catholic and orthodox Christian, Jews...

A gentle, yet insightful introduction to what was an ugly period in our history.

Very thorough work from a novel, yet talented author. This work of history shines light upon a very dark recent past of Bosnia

Great example of modern oral history; I can see some great questions in the background of guests' stories! The diversity of interviewees brings different perspectives on the messy '90s, making for a well-rounded narrative. What I loved is that all of them support the idea that war should never be an option and it should never be repeated anywhere. This book is a great addition to post-war literature, emphasising peace every step of the way. It really takes an open mind to understand a few standing points of many guests – but that is the point :) If you are looking for exploring wartime stories in the Balkans from the perspective of Sarajevo citizens, this is a book to go!
