It used to gall her that some sept members could walk through walls, move an apple across the table without touching it, shape-shift, or make objects burst into flames while she could do none of those things. But [her grandfather] had once told her that she had the gift of humanity and that was what made her special to the sept and vital to their survival.I'd give 4.5 stars to the world this author has built, and I loved some of the side characters in the village. Also, I thought Glen, the principal male character, was really well done in his role as an FBI special agent from the Baltimore office investigating decapitations in Clare Point and trying to figure the village out while being forced by political pressure to partner with a second special agent who is not only from outside his territory (from the Philadelphia office) but grew up in Clare Point: Fia Kahill. As a romantic hero, though, Glen falls flat; his progression isn't very credible, and the ending is unsatisfying .
