Simplicity is the key to Dan's golf coaching. He has created a short game system that any golfer can apply with immediate results – breaking down how you can improve your short game by learning new techniques and increasing your golfing IQ. Combining better technique and a better way of thinking will improve your ability to perform on the golf course.
Amateurs tend to have very little understanding of the short game when playing golf, specifically how it differs from the long game or how they can make better decisions. They have no plan. This book will give you a clear, simple system you can apply immediately and play better golf.
3 The Short Game System will give you the three key shots you need around a green. A low-running chip shot, a soft-landing spin shot, and the lob shot. You will learn the set-up and swing fundamentals to execute these shots. In addition to the greenside shots you will learn the art of bunker play and pitching, along with many other specialist shots to add to your repertoire.
Dan has taught these shots to hundreds of Tour Professionals and his clients have won Major Championships, Tour Championships, and several European Order of Merit titles. As well as learning these exact techniques, proven at the highest level in golf, you will acquire crucial performance skills. You will develop an understanding of the intricacies of assessing the lie, the art of practice and, fundamentally, how to learn so you can perform to the best of your ability and further enjoy your golf.
Illustrated with hundreds of photographs, including swing sequences and practice drills, 3 Releases is your ultimate short game guide.

This is a well-written and descriptive book. As someone who has played golf for 15 years and continues to face challenges, I found the insights on setup and swing paths easy to understand and implement. Golf doesn't have to be complicated; what you need is a solid foundation that you can rely on in high-pressure situations to ensure reliability and consistency. Grieve is an excellent teacher, and I discovered him through his YouTube content. I have recommended this book to several people I play with, and all of them have reported that it has positively changed their game.
Dan Grieve has a fine way of communicating - he keeps it clear - straightforward mechanics but described in practical terms and backed up by photographs of the key positions in the swing. As a top coach he is able to impart his teaching to both professional golfers and the rest of us amateurs of varying ability. I found that his videos are very helpful, particularly in conjunction with the book. Not surprised to see the warm tributes to the influence of Alex Hay - a similar lucid style, emphasising the basic elements - Alex Hay was one of the first golf writers I read and found understandable.
The emphasis on the need for practice - and patience - lies at the heart of this system - which has removed the fog of panic or hit and hope which has been the default of many amateur golfers.
Daniel Grieves is THE short game coach taking many pros games to the next level. If you are a golfer and you have not read this book you are leaving strokes on the table. The book is easy to understand with clear illustration of technique. Giving you the knowledge to elevate your short game skills to that of a scratch golfer. The short game is the most important part of golf. Yet it is the most skipped portion of golf practice.
This book and Dan Grieve’s videos on YouTube have revolutionized my golf short game. I have gone from a very inconsistent short game golfer to someone who performs well below my handicap from 75 yards in. Dan’s systematic approach to teaching the basics of the short game is easy to understand and reasonably easy to implement with sufficient practice. The book provides the framework to become a good short game player. Adding in his videos on his YouTube channel helps one go from good to very good. I can’t recommend this book highly enough to golfers either new to the game or who continually struggle with short game shots and don’t know why.
I'm so lucky to find this book early on in my golfing education. With under two years of experience, my more seasoned playing partners are shocked at my chipping (pitching is still a work in progress). I like that my short game is different from my long game, as opposed to being a miniature version of it. It really allows me to separate the two during practice.
Essential reading for any golfer who seeks a lower handicap.
I am in the early stages of applying Dan’s short game techniques to my own golf and have witnessed a vast improvement already. I no longer fear the dreaded chip shot and now have a clearer idea of which shot to play and how to execute it. A big thank you to Dan Grieve for enabling average golfers like me to learn from his vast experience and knowledge.
Thank you for publishing this book. It will be of interest not only to golfers but also to casual fans. I spent part of the summer trying to figure out how to play bet on 1xbet. It turns out everything becomes easier when you start to see professional techniques. Read the book and apply the knowledge while watching the live broadcast. Your sports predictions will get better.
As a two handicap senior female golfer I was looking for something to make the short game click. Started watching a few of Dans videos on Facebook / YouTube -loved what I saw. Then found and bought the book. I have never been as excited to start the golf season. (and I’m usually pretty excited 😆).
Best advice is to get this book and check out the YouTube channel in parallel. Also, ignore any other instructions on the short game other than Dan's so as to avoid confusion. In my experience it can cause a mixup of techniques standing over the ball which is a killer. Follow this to the letter and you'll fall in love with this part of the game
A go to book for those wanting to understand short game principles & how to implement them. Well done Dan for explaining & summarising things in such a simple understandable way
I’ve read a lot of books on the short game and 3 Releases without a doubt is top of the list. Anyone wishing to improve their short game I heartily recommend you buy this book.
Dan Grieves provides a clear understanding of what is required for the golf short game. I’ve already tried out some of the instructive techniques with good results. Highly recommended.
Read it all(usually quit on golf instruction books) kept my interest with enough examples to enable me to included it in my practice regime straight away.
Very instructive and clear concepts outlined. Would love a bit more exercises but that can be found on social media and YouTube alongside instruction videos.
Dan explains his system with such simplicity. He also has great videos on YouTube and Instagram to compliment this book. Great read. Highly recommended.
Dan provides very specific and understandable guidance and techniques for all the short game shots. It’s the best instruction I’ve come across. I’ll be re-reading this many times for reinforcement of his method. Thank you Dan.
Concise and very readable. This is something that will be re-read often. I’ve watched Dan on Instagram and was hesitant to get the book because his release system seemed complicated. Now I realize how necessary it is to become a competent golfer.
Thank you Dan. You helped me make sense of the short game. I learned so much but the most impactful section was the one on types of practice. I see a path now that will allow me to improve.
Very practical advice throughout the entire book. I probably needs to be kept as a reference and read repeatedly . I recommend reading this book for those who are serious about improving their short game
