Another tantalising collection of stories.

Following the success of their first anthology in 2021, Oxley Men’s Shed Writing Group has come up with another not-to-be-missed compilation of fascinating stories.

Offcuts 2 includes not only another array of intriguing, amusing, amazing and sometimes unlikely yarns, but this year there are photos from the writers and sketches from the Shed Drawing Group. You’ll be entertained, informed and occasionally challenged by the range of stories, from working in floods and lighthouses to hay-making and hitch-hiking, from carefree schooldays and careless bank robbers to wartime Vietnam, conscripts in PNG, and cross-border smuggling in Europe. And the sketches only serve to reinforce what a talented mob the members of Oxley Men’s Shed are!

Stories by Bill Barker, Jim Pascoe, Trevor Armstrong, Darryl Dymock, James Vernon, Dave Shearer, George Pugh,John Brown and Bill Thirkill
Sketches by Peter Darmody, Anthony Durrington, Brian Goeldner, George Pugh, Dave Shearer and Alan Smith.

About the author

Darryl Dymock

18 books
Dr Darryl Dymock works part-time as a senior researcher at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia, and has a special interest in adult learning and development, and the abilities of older workers. Already a well-published author in his field, as a mature-age worker he gave up full-time employment to spend more time on writing non-fiction and short stories.

Darryl is convinced from his long experience in educating adults that you can teach an old dog new tricks, so long as the animal in question wants to learn. He has four grown-up children, and lives in Brisbane with his wife and his laptop. So far he has had eleven different jobs, including clerk, high school teacher, taxi-driver, soldier, and university lecturer, and has lived in three Australian states, England, and Papua New Guinea. He has no plans to retire.

Disclosure: I have been involved with the publication of this book, so I am not rating it.

These short memoir pieces from the members of the Men's Shed at Oxley in Queensland range across many years and many countries. Tall tales and true, they are, told with a deft and dexterous touch. It only goes to prove that even ordinary lives are filled with interesting moments and extraordinarily interesting lives are filled with extraordinarily interesting moments.

The artwork from the sketcher's group really enlivens the look of the book. A great addition to local history.
