Thông qua quyển sách này, giáo sư Sadakata đã chỉ ra những sự tương đồng giữa vũ trụ quan khoa học hiện đại với Phật giáo, dựa trên một vốn kiến thức liên - văn hoá khổng lồ cuả giáo sư. Ông cũng chỉ ra cho ta thấy làm cách nào mà môn triết học cổ xưa này có thể hướng chúng ta đến một cuộc sống toàn vẹn hơn.
Bất kỳ ai muốn tìm hiểu Phật giáo dưới con mắt của một nhà nghiên cứu khoa học, đều nên sở hữu quyển này.

cute lil book detailing the ins and outs of buddhist cosmology, important if you really need to know how large the cosmic mountain that makes up the main area of the universe is in yojanas. there are some very informative illustrations of the shape of the universe and some nightmarish descriptions of torment in the various hells.

Mình hơi ớn việc tác giả cố gắng đặt diễn ngôn khoa học ở vị trí trung tâm, và coi những kiến giải về thế giới, địa ngục hay Tịnh độ của Phật giáo có phần "lỗi thời" ("lỗi thời" vì đâu? Vì tác giả không kiểm chứng được thông tin về "thế giới" Phật giáo bằng chứng cớ khoa học?)

Cuốn này gần như chẳng nói gì về cốt tủy của đạo Phật, mà là quan niệm về cách nhìn Phật giáo về vũ trụ - dựa trên phần nhiều nhãn quan khoa học.

Rất hay. Nhưng vô cùng khó hiểu, phải có kiến thức cơ bản trước về Phật học. Lý giải về vũ trụ rõ ràng, cũng như các cõi giới một cách cặn kẽ. Chỉ có Phật Giáo mới hệ thống rõ ràng vậy được.

If you want to know how high is Mount Sumeru, about Buddhist heavens and hells, or what is the difference between the form and formless realms this is the book to read. It describes in detail and in a very systematic fashion Buddhist cosmology as depicted in the Abhidharma and the Flower Garland Sutra. Unfortunately there's no discussion about Vajrayana cosmology but that's understandable as that could easily take a few volumes just on its own. Interspersed through the text are some very interesting tidbits about how these concepts came to be and possible ties to Greece and other ancient cultures, which puts things in perspective. My only complaint is that the last two chapters - on some cosmological developments in Japanese Buddhism and on the relationship between Buddhist cosmology and modern science - feel like filler material and in my opinion the book would be better without them. But overall this is a great book to casually read or to use as a reference.

Provides a wonderful introduction to basic Buddhist concepts, and is a great help for understanding Buddhist art and architecture.
