The best way to ruin a rogue slayer's day? Force an arranged marriage on her.

Despite being the best of the best, my parents–who run our region's slayer council–decide it's time for me to get married. Apparently, being the wife of a high-born slayer will finally make me respectable. Or so they say. I see the arrangement for what it really is: a power grab.

They don't care about my happiness, and they certainly don't care about the strange demons I've encountered. No matter how much I try to tell them how dangerous the beings are, no one listens.

They never do.

Now I'm stuck with an infuriating man who's no happier about this arrangement than I am, though he insists we go through with it. Trying to get rid of him while eradicating these new nightmarish demons won't be easy. Throw in a sweet shifter who claims I'm his fated mate and a handsome fae stalker, and I might just lose it.

I always wished for a new family, but this isn’t exactly what I had in mind.

How am I supposed to juggle three men and save the world? I guess we'll find out…

Shadow Slayer is the first in a trilogy. This is a why-choose romance with laugh out loud moments, spice, and general chaos.

I actually finished this book a few days ago, but I needed some time to noodle on it. The truth is, this book started out iffy for me, but it really grew on me. Some spoilers below but nothing major.

The main aspect of this book that I'm still unconvinced about is the FMC, Greer. She is one of those ~badass, takes no shit, snarky heroines~, which I sometimes have a hard time with. I think there is a fine line between sassy/clever/witty and being obnoxious/rude/just a general dick. Towards the beginning of the book, I found Greer leaning towards the latter, as she was a bit too obnoxious for me. Whether it's a man or woman speaking, I will cringe if the character says "suck my left nut" or running around with literal cum stains on your shirt. It feels like very juvenile behavior and language, rather than a "takes-no-shit powerful woman," which is definitely what this book is going for. HOWEVER, I think Greer got a lot better as time went on. We had a few scenes where she was vulnerable and/or when she fought for those that other slayers don't fight for, and it made my respect grow for her. She's had a pretty shitty life thus far, so I can understand some of her behavior. All that said, for me, the jury is still out on Greer.

The true shining star(s) of this book are the 3 men. All 3 of the main male characters (Valen, Dane, and Bastian) are written so well. They have distinct personalities by the end of it, and I really actually love each of them in their own way. First we have Valen, who is being forced to marry Greer just as much as she is being forced to marry him. Valen is surprised when he actually sees something in Greer and actually starts to genuinely like her/support her when she is belittled by other slayers and her parents, even though she's still being an asshole to him. Second we have Dane, who is your typical shifter that is immediately obsessed with Greer and his creature is all "MATE!." I love that Dane is a bear shifter. Finally, there is Bastian, who had me laugh-out-loud laughing throughout his scenes. He is a shadow fae who has never been to the human world before, and he's so confused about literally everything (what's a car? what's a taco? etc.). It's so endearing but also hilarious reading his inner monologue where he thinks about slitting throats to win Greer's favor and wondering if a cell phone is a tiny oracle. I have high hopes for the men.

Also, just a side note: the men were not friends before Greer. They've all met Greer separately, and thus, have had to become friends with each other as well, which I feel like I don't see often in paranormal/fantasy reverse harems. Their interactions between the 3 of them just KILL me because they're either hilarious or so cute. I loved when the 3 guys had to share a bedroom and Bastian kept spooning Dane. Also loved when Valen was going through it with his feelings for Greer, and Dane came out to talk to him and made him feel better. It was so sweet.

The last thing I will say about this book is that it got really funny towards the end. The beginning was pretty much just Greer, who I don't find that funny, but the end was a lot of scenes with the 3 men, as well as Rippley who had me laughing so hard. Rippley is a witch, but she is a terrible witch who gets every spell wrong. The scene with the nonstop multiplying bunnies that Rippley was trying to send to hell was so funny (especially because Dane kept trying to steal them because they were so cute). Rippley + Bastian in particular really gave me a good laugh.

Anyways, I will give book 2 a try. I like the series so far. The writing is good--no issues with typos or grammar or anything like that. There was 1 scene that I thought was written a bit confusing/was a little clunky, but for the most part, all was smooth and paced well. Hopefully I like Greer more in the next book!

DNF at 19% after the American slayer FMC Greer was introduced to her arranged British slayer fiance Valen by her parents.

As the synopsis had hinted at, the story so far really was total chaos. There was so much internal rambling from Greer that I honestly didn't care about, from the size of her breasts to bodily fluids that were left on her shirt. The contrived situations that Greer and Valen found themselves in - an arranged marriage and very graphic domestic abuse - were not very believable as I didn't understand from what I read so far how their parents could enforce their behavior or why the pair didn't work harder to escape their parents' influence. For example, Valen's father - how was that supposed help with his international ambitions if his son was dead and couldn't be a chess piece?

I didn't like any of the characters introduced by the time I quit - Greer monologued so much about her badassery and was quite obnoxious. The attempted humor in the writing didn't work for me either. I have enjoyed books written by the authors individually, but unfortunately, this book was not for me.

Well, all the characters in this book keep saying that the MC is childish, immature and arrogant. Colour me surprised when there is no evidence to prove them wrong. Oh well. At 38% I couldn't deal with it anymore and it was my time to leave.

This book in a few sentences - the great and mighty "the most kills to thy name" MC, who needs no man by her side, and is such a pro she's able to take down demons solo in her sleep, basically lets a demon get away on the first hunt in the book and has to chase it down on foot for hours, she kicks a co-worker in the face for insulting her, has sex with someone she met once for 2 min and gets cut to shreds on her first encounter with a new type of demon. But she has reasons why she's the best and she'll take no shit from no one. And I'm out....

⭐️Brief Summery:
The first book in a series of 3. All the same characters storylines the series is complete😊.

✨Greer is a Slayer in a world of Humans, Vampire, demons, Shifters, witches and Faeries. Slayers are like the police the keep the dangerous ones under control. Mostly Demons they hunt and kill demons. Slayers are kinda elitists in the world with loads of politics and hierarchy. Greer comes from and elite family her mom and dad are the council -in charge- for the northwest branch of Slayers.

✨Greers parents are HORRIBLE to her. She’s the strongest of the Slayers but never good enough for her parents. She doesn’t really play by the rules and this makes her an outcast amongst her kind. She also has good relationships and compassion for other beings which most Slayers look down upon. She’s definitely a bit conceded but it comes form a place of protecting herself.

✨Greers parent set up an Arranged marriage to another Slayer-Valen- from a prestigious family without telling her. Valen is also not happy about this.
Meanwhile NEW monsters are appearing and they are hard to kill if not impossible. ✨Whiles she unravels this mystery and fights for beings everywhere, she also is dealing with a fiancé she just met and doesn’t like, she meets a bear shifter who clams she is his mate, meets a quirky witch that will become her friend and a Fae man that immediately is attracted to her but is also tied up in the mystery of the monsters.

🌟 Overall Opinion:
I know a lot of reviewers say Greer was to cocky and closed off but I actually found her refreshing. She has good reasons for her behavior as did Valen. She definitely had moments of vulnerability. She was strong cause she had to be but she still only ever wanted loved and acceptance.

✨I thought the mix of action, mystery and Romance and LMAO moments was perfect and super enjoyable to read.
The storyline is still unfolding under a mystery and is plot driven with Romance intertwined.
-😢I feel for Valen and I wish he opened up to her about his reasons for the marriage.
I think their romance could have made a bit more progressed if he had.
-Love 😍 Dane he’s just super swoony he’s our protective shifter and a total cinnamon roll. He’s very intuitive about the each person and really helps support them all.
-Enter Bastian💕OMG he is hilarious and a total trouble maker. He’s all about Greer from first sight and his antics had me cracking up😂.
🪄Rippley the quirky witch that has no control of her magic and her antics are hilarious.
-Valen takes a while but by the end of book one I think they are on the right track🥳 yay I hate when it’s drama out.
Larping🤣& Purple Peckers😂

📖 Pages: 328

🦹🏻‍♂️ Hero: Its a RH

🧸Dane AKA 💕Teddy Bear- a bear shifter and the heart of the group. He loves deep and fast and unconditionally. He is the one who gets Greer to start to trust and open up.

🗡️Valen-26yr slayer her betrothed. He a hottie British bloke, he’s damaged and so much like Greer. Because of the arranged marriages they get off to a bad start.

🧚🏻‍♀️Bastian- a Farie he’s from farie which is equal to 1800 for technology and way of life. He’s is mischievous and freaking hilarious.

🦸🏼‍♀️ Heroin: 🗡️Greer- 25yr she’s a badass Slayer well she’s definitely conceded lol. I like confidence in a FMC but she has lots of vulnerabilities and a soft side. She’s smart and follows her instincts.

💭 POV:
first person: multiple POV told through Greer and her harem and was done very well.

🔥 Burn Rate:
❤️‍🔥Med-Dane and Greer have sex around the 25% mark. And again later in the book.
💕Slow-Valer- none this book but a few kisses
💗Slow- Bastian- he wants fit away but he comes onto the scene late in the book so has yet to develop fully.

😡/😍 Emotion Level: Balanced!
😢there’s some sad part dealing with abuse - emotional and physical with Greer and Valen.
🫣But there’s also lots more of excitement with the mystery.
💗And sweet scenes with her men.
😂LMAO that had be cracking up.

❤️‍🔥 Sexy Times:
Yes! We have some sex going on with Dane it’s definitely steamy.

💥 Descriptive sex:
Yes medium. You get good details but it’s not drawn out.

🌓 Push/Pull:
there is definitely lots of push between Greer and Valen. But by the end it would seem that bit is over.

☠️ OW Drama: NONE

🤮 OW or OM Sex/Fluids exchange/DNA:
No OW / one scene where Greer has a past hookups Cum on her shirt but it’s old and before the book starts.

🤬 Cheating: NONE

😅 OM drama: NONE

👰🏼‍♀️ Virgin:
Nope! Ain’t no V here!

😑 Separation: NONE

🗡️ Triggers:
Some parental abuse both physically and emotionally. Blood and gore from fighting monster.

⚠️ Safety: This is a safe read

💕 Epilogue: Cliffhanger

❤️ HEA: TBD

🤔 Closing Summery:
This was a great first book to the series and I’m super excited this series is finished and can jump into the next right away.

Greer is the best Shadow Slayer around. She is dedicated to her job and loves every minute of it. But her world is turned upside down when her parents decide to arrange a marriage for her. Now the demons are not the only thing make her life hard. Greer is sassy, mouthy and takes no prisoners. Great steam and a interesting plot. Can't wait to see where this series goes after that cliffhanger.

Action packed adventure. This book was filled with fast paced fighting action. Greer and Valen are damaged by family histories. Dane is a cinnamon bun of a mate who is exactly what Greer needs. At times I wanted to grab Valen and shake him to get him to communicate. The action scenes were well written. The storyline was interesting and kept me engaged from start to finish.

Shadow Slayer, the first book in the To Kill a Nightmare series by Rory Miles and Harper Frey was a deciduously unique ride into a world of slayers, demons, shifters, fae and all other mystical things and did not disappoint!!!

Greer is our kick butt fearless heroine who’s also the best demon slayer around—yet oftentimes unappreciated by the other skaters, including her own parents, who just happen to be leaders of the slayer council. Regardless of how they feel, Greer is confident in her slayer abilities and works hard to keep the world safe from the merciless demons that seem to wreck continual havoc on the world.

But luckily it’s not all work and no play as her works leads her to the door of a sexy shifter, who just happens to turn out to be her fated mate. And a man that sees Greer for who she truly is and shows her just how amazing she is. Enter in a another slayer from an outside slayer community, due to her parents striking a marriage deal with another slayer family, and let’s just say that things definitely start to heat up! Especially as demonic activity not only increases but starts to take a drastic turn for the worse.

Can Greer and her men work together to save the shifters and humans alike or is their fate already doomed? Read on to see for yourself in this amazing fast paced journey that’s full of action, mystery and lots of spicy tension that’s sure to please! Miles and Frey are a phenomenal writing duo and I can’t wait for more of this amazing world full of fantastic characters!

I am going to start by saying that this did not begin quite promising for me. However, as I actually got into the story, the premise was interesting enough for me to continue. I did like the entire guild of slayers, who protect both supernaturals and humans from demons. It seems like there was s quite a bit of politics entangled within the ruling families and those that are members of the Council.
I did not like the FMC, she came off as self- absorbed, overly aggressive and frankly, it just did not work for me. I love a strong main heroine, one who is independent and possesses the courage to fight her demons, but the lady in question here was portrayed in a rather unflattering manner for me. The male characters are actually pleasant, each one of them possessing unique qualities, which in a way did slightly balance out my frustration with the leading lady.
I am interested enough to see how things progress, hopefully I would overcome my feelings towards the leading lady.

I’m still reserving the right to DNF this trilogy halfway through the second book…but so far I’m really enjoying it.
It’s funny and adorable, and yet it’s also action packed and dangerous and super emotionally harrowing.
It’s also sexy and sweet and tension filled and passionate.

And that ending?
Ooh boy. The mysteries yet solved are going to be juicy. I can tell.

I’m loving it. I’m really hoping that continues. 🤞🏻

I have to admit that I wasn't entirely sure if this book was gonna be my thing. I love both Rory Miles and Harper Frey, but I'm not a huge fan of those female characters who are amazing at fighting, refuse to follow the rules and have issues with showing their softer sides. Don't get me wrong. It's an amazing thing they exist. They're just usually not for me. However, I wanted to give this book the benefit of the doubt and it really helped that I got an arc of this book to give it a try.

From the very start this book is as action packed as you expect it to be. I personally have a hard time following action in general, but the authors from this book did a great job with finding some sort of order in the chaos and helping me to follow what was going on and what was happening. I especially really loved how we soon found out that all the action and the mysterious monster we're meeting are part of a bigger storyline. I can't wait to get some answers!

Although the heroine in this story is not my favorite kind of heroine, especially not because she comes across as really unreasonable for no good reason quite often, I did like her development throughout the story and how she was slowly opening up a little, trusting the guys more and more. In this book it were only glimpses, we're at the beginning of the story after all, but watching her grow and learn in future books will without a doubt be amazing.

Just like I can't wait to see the relationship between her and her guys develop. This book takes things relatively slow. Which is not much of a surprise since our heroine has issues opening up. And she's clearly not the only one. One of the heroes has his own personal issues he's not ready to talk about, the kind of issues that really broke my heart and I felt so so sorry for everything happening to him, and there seems to be some big issue with another one too.

I really can't wait now to get my hands on the second book!

Rory Miles was one of the authors that I've been meaning to read while Harper is an author I've just gotten into so I was pleasantly surprised that they've teamed up together to collaborate on the To Kill A Nightmare series (great name) and the first book Shadow Slayer, was phenomenal.

Greer is utterly fantastic and quite deadly. She is a skilled slayer, one of the best and her job is her life because she loves keeping people safe. However she's not really close to anyone, she doesn't fit in with the other slayers and even her parents are cruel, always have been. Greer had to build walls but she didn't let turn her heart bitter and my heart goes out to her, all that she had to face with no one in her corner breaks my heart.

However, the loner who everyone treated as a stepchild, started gathering a few people in this book. Dane, the shifter with the sweetest disposition and the kindest heart. Valen the fiancé who starts off as a jerk but has these moments where his wall is down, but he needs to stop the darkness from his past that interfere with his present, turning him into someone he doesn't want to be. There's a third possible dangerous and flirtatious man who might give Greer a run for her money. Also to note in Greer's circle is a librarian guard, an old doc, a quirky seer, and a wayward witch. Maybe Greer won't be alone after all.

While I have heard of slayers before (I mean, hello, Buffy) I've never read about them before so I find this whole culture around slayers interesting. As usual, it's the council members who I don't trust, they seem harsh and focused only on themselves. Like I expected anything else from a council. I liked that the story is set in Portland, that was a first for me and I liked that there's a supernatural community that varied. This book did have its dark moments, verbal, emotional, and physical abuse was represented and so was the trauma stemming from it. The plot was good, figuring out the mystery about what's going on, the attacks, and the family drama, and seeing the new relationships getting figured out was great but it was the emotions that helped me connect to the story.

I didn't know what I was getting with Shadow Slayer, all I knew is that the description piqued my interest, that it was written by an author I just getting into, and I loved the cover. I'm so happy that I didn't pass this book up. The story was awesome and the characters even more so, Greer called to me, she is my soul sister, Dane constantly made my heart swell, there was serious swooning, and Ripley not only made me laugh but made me root for her. The story ended on a crazy note with confusion, a shocking reveal, and betrayal. I'm hoping that it wasn't what it seemed, only Harper and Rory will tell, in the next book.

I really enjoyed this book.

Greer is the slayer daughter of 2 powerful members of the council. Of course, it doesn't matter to them how good she is, they're more concerned about politics and appearances, so decided to force an arranged marriage.

Greer is tough, and a good fighter, but the issues with her parents go beyond their relationship. Valen, her reluctant fiancé, has his own parental issues. Add in a seemingly unflappable bear shifter and a mysterious fae, along with some mysterious monsters popping up, and you have a great mix for an action packed story.

I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes, if for no other reasons that I really want to see her mother get her comeuppance!

I have a love/hate thing about FMC who are overly badass and Greer is smack dab in the middle of that.

At first, she got on my nerves with her inner dialogue. It’s one thing to acknowledge you’re incredible at your job, but Lordy she needs a slice of humble pie sometimes. Also, her first meeting with Valen and how their relationship started was one hundred percent her doing. Whether she was mad about her mom picking him, she could have just friggin’ talked it out with him instead of jumping down his throat. I do love how protective she is over the humans/supes and that she will do whatever it takes to keep them safe. I will admit, she did get better with her quick “snark” toward the end of this book so hopefully she continues on that path.

I’m not understanding why Valen doesn’t just come clean to Greer about WHY he has to go through with this marriage? They’ve literally seen their worst fears/most hated moments and they still can’t be honest with each other?? Ugh.

My sweet Dane. I love him. That’s all that needs to be said.

I’m also 10000% sure that Bastian didn’t do that. Nope. I refuse to believe it.

Overall, I’m still looking forward to this series and how everything plays out.

Wow. That was one heck of a wild ride. And that ending makes me desperately curious to know what’s going to happen next. (And what’s really going on.) I’m pretty sure I’ve gone and fallen in love with these characters. They’re complex, unique, and freaking hilarious. There’s more than one perfect one-liner that I will be cherishing from this text. I NEED book two and I NEED it NOW!
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.

I didn’t connect with this book at all. Greer is over the top brash and aggressive, which can be annoying, but more than anything it feels done to death. The aggressively brash independent badass woman heroine is practically a trope in PNR and she felt very similar to any number of FMC’s in other books. Valen was very milquetoast. Dane doesn’t have a lot going for him in the personality department.

I didn’t really understand the motivations behind the arranged marriage, nor was it clear why Bianca would be willing to give up her best slayer if Greer failed to cooperate. What did Valen’s father get from this arrangement, since he actually did give up a good slayer?

With as bad a leader as Bianca is, you’d think the demons would have taken over by now.

I thought the “biggest fears” were kind of corny. Oh no, it’s my mom but dead, or my mom if she crawled out of the well in the Ring, or me as a little kid looking sad. These are big bad demon hunters… stop crying and get to fighting.

I found this book hard to get through. The main character was obnoxious and unlikable. I like a strong, doesn't give a shit female lead, but you can be strong and not crass at the same time. The T-shirt stain was gross, and completely unnecessary.
The insta love with the shifter was way too fast, even for a fated mate relationship. The other two male love interests were fine, but by the time they showed up I was over it.
The thing that got me the most, was the humor. I really didn't like it. It came across as immature and annoying.
I chose this book to see a new side of demon hunting, but the demons were one sided. The Slayers were 2 dimensional and the main character was annoying, childish and emotionally and mentally weak.

Shaky ground

I gritted my teeth to make it to the halfway point. It started getting better and I foolishly thought it would continue improving. The story wasn't horrible but the foundation of it has so many holes it doesn't support a thing.
*Just because slayers are the strongest doesn't mean the other supes won't rebel if they continue their speciest ways. There's a lot more of the others than them.
*If Greer's mom doesn't listen to valid threats to the community and people keep dying then her all important power base is gone. She can hate her daughter all she wants but ignoring threats is stupid.
*Why is there no one who can help Valen's mom? There's ways to bind power. Bind his dad. There are always enemies to every leader. Build a campaign against his dad.
*The childish behavior from both Greer and Valen was just ridiculous. I loathe deliberately contrived, torturously overdone misunderstandings. They're adults, act like it.
*Greer jumping Dane just to spite Valen isn't a good foundation for a relationship.
*How are slayers supposed to take care of a community they don't talk to?
*How are leaders chosen in this world? There's absolutely no world building.
*The characters don't grow. They're just as immature and uncommunicative as they were when they entered the story.
*What's the point of the story? Where's the plot? Slayers slay demons. Ok. Shifters do what? Where are the other races? Vampires, and whatever else is out there? Why can't they help?
*There's all this technology and no one uses it to communicate. Why didn't the affected communities alert the slayers about the threats?
*Why didn't the witches add protection wards around places? Do they not talk to the others, either?
*Why are their parents so set on their marriage? There's absolutely no mention of communication between the slayers in other countries. There's no mention of their families being the strongest in abilities. They can only lead 1 country if they did marry. I doubt Greer's mom or Valen's dad are going to give up power to kids they consider inferior. So why is this marriage important? It doesn't make sense.

There's just so many plot holes and not a single hint of a destination in sight for a resolution. Plug the rifts. Ok. Stop marriage. Maybe? They aren't even sure how they're killing the nightmares. One minute their slayer flames just barely wound them, unknown weapons save the day, then the next fight their flames kill them? It doesn't make sense. Nothing flows or follows through on previously stated facts or previous scenarios. We never learn if Greer takes in characteristics of her veae mate. Why, if other supes have mates, don't slayers? As previously stated, the foundation is just not there. All I have is questions and frustrations after finishing this. And reading the blurb for the next lets me know the sequel will leave me no happier. If being a slayer, which to her means protecting others, and her mom's system isn't protecting others, why doesn't she strike out on her own? She already has contacts in the community. She can get healing spells on her own. She can purchase weapons. She actually talks to people. The supes would turn to her in a heartbeat and support her.
Oh, and for someone who wants to be seen as strong and mature, she physically attacked Valen because he didn't show up for a meeting with her mom. The meeting that was so important that she didn't file a report. Or let the community she's supposed to care for know about the new monsters for a week. Physically hits him because she's angry at her mom. Just ugh. That doesn't show strength. Quite the opposite. And him, instead of being an adult, he nuses his words like a scalpel and goes right for the kill. If he's trying to save his mom with this marriage, he sure has a funny way of charming her.

Unexpectedly good!

Slayers are human-like supernaturals with extra speed, strength, and senses. They have some magic as well since they can do wards and conjure slayer fire for their weapons. They primarily hunt down demons though they would also hunt other supes who get out line.

Greer is the slayer with the highest kill count in the US but she has deep rooted parent issues (big time mommy issues mostly) because they keep telling her that she's a disappointment. Her parents are higher ups in the slayer society and since being a slayer is all Greer's known and love, they are able to control her through that. This is hella frustrating and I keep thinking why she can't do anything about it. I long for the day when she's able to get out from under their thumbs and get revenge on her parents.

She meets Dane, a bear shifter, when she saves him from a paralysis demon and she turns out to be his mate. He is the first one to show her caring and acceptance so our heroine is soft as a marshmallow on him. I love that she did not fight her feelings for him so much.

Another guy we met is Valen, the son of the slayer councilor from Kent, England. His father promised him as a husband to Greer as a way to ally with Greer's parents. Like Greer, he lets his father get away with keeping him under his thumb because he can't leave his mother who for some reason won't leave his father even though he beats her up.

And then there's Bastian, a Renaissance-man looking shadow fae who enters earth because of the nightmares, the creatures that are the new source of Greer's problems. He is flirty and keeps offering to hurt Valen or Dane so he can be her consort. Greer doesn't trust him much but she's fond of him.

Biggest surprise at the end when Bastian seemed to have betrayed them by opening more rifts that let nightmares in to Earth but what I am thinking of right now is the last warning the witch said to Greer, "beware the twins".

I enjoyed the action we saw in this book - Greer is shown as a badass rather than just described as such. I love that she and Valen work well together when they fight. I like that Valen was an arse at first, but when he realized he was making a mistake on how he treats Greer, he backtracks and tries to make it up to her. I enjoyed Bastian's flirting with Greer especially his offers of killing either Dane or Valen just so he vould be her consort.

I admit, the parent issues are killing some of the vibes of this book because why can't they just say fuck it, but I try to understand that it's not so easy. Looking at the synopsis, Greer's mom is going to be the main antagonist (looks like) and I'm not really excited about that. But I do want to read more about the guys and Greer so I'll go and read the next book now.

The way that I would like to describe this book is: Inconsistent. Mainly because, it had a lot of potential, but the pacing didn't connect well and the characters biggest personality traits were: Being overshadowed by their inability to cope.

Looking from an outside perspective, people whose life revolves around crime, violence and trauma, tend to be really guarded, use tactical thinking and compartmentalize really well. Because, sometimes it's the only way to get the job done.

So, even in this context, where we have a fantasy world and, of course, normal rules sometimes don't apply, there should be at least some of those traits, especially with people whose childhood has been rough.

However, we don't see that in here. We have deeply insecure MCs, that don't know how to separate personal life from their professional one. And this causes a dual experience in the story. Where we have truly vulnerable moments and trauma bonding. Real criticism from the love interests, which is rare in some cases, and communication in some others. But the pacing before and after those seemingly well-portrayed events breaks the flow of the story. In one scene we have this big state of introspection, of harsh truths. A steady development. And in the next we forget about it, there's this instant forgiveness/inmediate trust. From one page to the other we have: The beginning stages of trust, slow building, and in the next 2-8 pages we go straight to full blown declarations of love.

It was skipping to the point, like fast forwarding some parts of a video. Which can be appreciated in some books, where things take an eternity to resolve themselves, but in here is just too fast.

The FMC in this case, is also inconsistent, as she tries to be something she is not. Also, throwing some sexist comments here and there. This repercutes along side of the story, plus the broken pacing. Not to mention,

When put together, the reader might have to turn a blind eye to 50% of these events to really enjoy the story.

Shadow Slayer was such a fun read. Having read books by both Harper Frey and Rory Miles before, I knew this was going to be good but I didn’t realize how much. Shadow Slayer has a little bit of everything that makes a paranormal story fun.

Greer is a strong woman, who (mostly) knows her worth, and deals with the mess that is her life with aplomb, a flaming sword and a healthy dose of snark. For all the is a fierce fighter and kickass slayer, it’s the surprising vulnerabilities she shows that make her more than a one dimensional character. Her empathy and attempts to right the wrongs done to others, as well as her distressing need to save humanity give her depth. Plus, the girl’s snark is on point.

“You’ll stop laughing if you want any hope of touching my tits tonight, Teddy bear”

In Shadow Slayer, we are introduced to two, possibly three, if the guys who are going to be in Greer’s harem. I loved them both, they’re perfect for her, even if they’re complete opposite. Dane, her shifter mate, is a literal teddy bear. There for whatever she needs. He supports her and backs her up but leaves her to take care of her business because he know she’s just that capable. Valen, is her complete opposite, uptight and British. They’d be perfect together if they could just communicate. I don’t know how many guys are going to end up with Greer in the end, pretty sure her collection increases over the series.

The plot is great. I’m not going to say much about it, but who doesn’t love a paranormal story where our intrepid heroine goes off to save the world with a gang of misfits, some cool weaponry, and a lot of snark. It even had me laughing out loud.

If you love paranormal romance, with strong heroines, a fun plot, fabulous side characters, fated mates, arranged marriages and a healthy dose of snark, oh and bunnies, definitely give this one a read.

Greer Westbrook is a badass female demon slayer that is independent, strong-willed, and powerful. Yet she is her parent’s biggest disappointment. She doesn’t blindly obey the council’s orders or honor her parent’s legacy in a way they approve of. Fighting and destroying nightmare demons is simply not enough and her parents expect her to wed for political gain. Just because her parent’s have arranged a marriage for Greer doesn’t mean she will submit.

“I’m not meant to love. I’m meant to destroy. To wreck. To break.”

Being unlovable fuels Greer’s drive and determination to be the best demon slayer in America. She avoids any and all relationships outside of physical intimacy. There is no doubt that Greer is more powerful than anyone realizes and her family has failed her by not providing her with support. Her snarky humor and immaturity is surely a result of her upbringing, but I had a difficult time connecting with Greer and felt as though she was reacting poorly. It felt whiny.

Dane the bear shifter (aka Teddy Bear) was the best part of this story. Who knew a big bad bear shifter could be so soft? Valen Valmont, a fellow demon slayer, would do anything to protect his mother from his abusive father, including agreeing to an arranged marriage with Greer. Their relationship was rocky from the start as they channeled enemies-to-lovers vibes. Valen has past trauma of his own to deal with and I think he and Greer have more in common than they want to admit. Bastian is a mysterious faery from the fae realm and he might just be my absolute favorite.

This book ends on a major cliffhanger but book two will be out soon!

Tropes: Paranormal romance, fantasy romance, reverse harem, enemies-to-lovers, arranged marriage, fated mates, demons, shifters, bears, fae.
Heat: 3/5

Rory and Harper came out, guns blazing, with a fancy new fantasy world that was full of brash adventure, snarky comebacks, spicy tension, and enough action to keep my eyes flying across the page as fast as they could read. Greer is full of the defiant anger that bleeds into every interaction she has, not just with her less than stellar parents. My quote used as a title is appropriate because her first reaction seems to be to stab. The assurance she won't, means something even if she doesn't know it yet. Her anger is only matched by Valen's desperation, and I felt for him so deeply, I was practically yelling at the book for his character to reveal his secret and shame.

The collection of men Greer attracts is broad, and I loved the juxtaposition of Valen and Dane. It wasn't simply growly alpha against golden retriever boyfriend vibes. No, this was stoic, clenched, dry humored Brit, against the fiercely protective bear shifter who says and does what he feels. Their dynamic is one of my favorites in a long time, and the addition of Bastian kept the relationships on its proverbial toes. The only thing I liked better than Valen and Dane together, was the amount of action, and how well written it was. This wasn't a spicy book with one or two scenes running away from a monster. It was littered with the practicalities of a fighter's life, from paperwork, to gym workouts, to uncomfortable work meetings, and the small details helped build and support how deeply Greer is sunk into her work. I appreciated the humor woven in, and the pop culture references as well. In total, I can not wait for the next book after a fairly subtle, but intense cliffhanger, and hope it won't be too long before the plot continues to thicken.

Shadow Slayer is one of those books that drew me in while reading the blurb: a badass demonslayer FMC, an arranged marriage, a fated mates trope, mixed harem, ... They sounded like great recipes for an awesome story. But honestly: this book is so much more than everything I got from the blurb!

First of all, Greer is one of the most wonderful fmc's I've ever read about. She feels a bit like three women in one, with so many character traits it's almost impossible to fit them in one person. She's badass and strong, but also vulnerable when it comes to the people that should love her unconditionally, but don't. It's clear she has one of the biggest hearts out there, while being fiercely protective about those she loves and cares about. And in the mean time trust issues make it hard to let others in like that. She's intelligent, but also quirky and a bit of a mess at times. And last but not least: her inner monologue is absolutely hilarious. The chapters in her POV are so funny and bittersweet; I just want to give her a big hug, and help her slay a few demons after that.

The men form a mixed harem, but their personalities are very different as well. At the moment I would say Bastian is my favorite, but they all have the potential to become favorites throughout the series. And honestly: Greer deserves all the love she can get, so the more the merrier! I'm also hoping we'll see more from Riddley in the next book, or perhaps even a spinoff with her as the fmc in the future. That girl stole my heart just as well as Greer did.

I absolutely recommend this book to everyone; it's an awesome start to a new series with great characters and a wonderful storyline.

I decided to give this series a chance after completing Rory Miles's other work, Tainted Power: The Complete Series. Which was one of my favorites!

Some themes in this book:

o Daddy and mommy issues
o Self-worth
o Reverse harem
o Arrange marriage
o Fantasy
o Paranormal

This is one of the few books where the mc had me cringing here and there at how immature and vulgar she was at times, but you know what? I'm glad I stayed because it got suuuper interesting partway through.

Her men:

Valen
- A brit who she has commonalities with. They're also in an arranged marriage that both of them despise. He's a slayer, just like her.

Dane
- A burly, bear-shifter who met her during one of her missions. Was straddling him when he woke up from a near-death experience and shi. Is her mate.

Bastian
- Potential love interest. He came near the end and was hilarious because he knew little of the human world. He's fae and controls shadows....

Between the mc and her men, I'd go with her men to bring me entertainment. They're so hilarious.

Onto book 2, Twilight Terrors

Omg this book 😍🤣🥵🤦🏼‍♀️⚔️⁉️

Where do I even start?! Ok, it’s a reverse harem urban fantasy about a demon slayer who is being forced into an arranged marriage by her emotionally abusive parents. Her future groom is also being forced by his physically abusive dad so while Greer wants to just say “F this!” to the arrangement, Valen is scared for his mom’s safety so he’s trying to convince her to go along with it.

Meanwhile there’s a bear shifter (Dane) who claims she’s his mate, strange demons that are really damn hard to kill, and a mysterious Fae dude (Bastian) who is dressed like he’s going to a Ren-Faire but seems to know what’s going on and only wants to help..

This book is so fucking funny! I highlighted a bunch of quotes on my kindle and then gave up and ordered a physical copy so I can actually annotate a book for once bc there’s that many scenes that are just perfection. Greer has kind of Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes but with added childhood trauma. The spice is perfect - you’ve got actual spice with the fates mates trope with Dane & all the angst of enemies to lovers with Valen that doesn’t resolve in this book but we’re getting there. We don’t really know what Bastian’s deal is yet but he’s definitely keen. It does end on a horrendous cliffhanger (how absolutely dare you!!) but I can’t even be mad because it’s so good. Seriously, it’s on KU - go read it!

5 huge stars from an American who doesn’t make tea in the microwave 😉

Superb start!
There is a lot packed into this first book in terms of action and emotions 😃
Greer is the leading slayer for her area but not without some deep seated parental issues ☹️ yet honestly she is kicka£$ in that she does not let this stop her being herself! She knows exactly who she is and she is not afraid to be that person 🙌🏻 love her snark AF inner monologue as well!! 😍
She does not suffer fools gladly and unfortunately when there appears to be a turbulence and change in the demons she’s slaying she might just have to deal with it alone 😩
However her building list of admirers for this warrior women might just force her to deal with things!! There’s a forced arranged marriage with the broody British slayer Valen - definite marry or maim vibes there! A devoted cuddly bear shifter Dane who agreed managed to save and now she’s his all! And then the mysterious Bastian who has some suspicious timings with his arrival…. All of them want to stick by Greer and help her vulnerable side 🥰 there’s a fair amount of tooing and froing between this building group but you really feel how they help Greer grow!
Soo interested to see how they recover from that shocking end right there!
Action and adventure a plenty in this one to keep you reading 😃

Well this was different! A good different! It's great to read a book that has the ability to surprise me and this one sure did! In a world where supernaturals are suspicion of one another,a lone super hot Slayer stumbles upon a Shifter, no really, ON a Shifter! I was expecting a typical fated mates/ paranormal book, expecting it to be good, Harper Frey is the author after all and was I in for a surprise! Good? Hell yes! Typical? Hell no! What I got was a book with great characters, each one with an unhappy past. A book that shows insecurities, that shows how a parent's love, or lack of it, leaves scars on one's very soul. I got an action packed book where strange almost invincible demons shape shift into your worst nightmare, a book where a young witch is causing all kinds of havoc, unintentionally but still major havoc, a book of deep love, protection and a whole lot of laughs when the 3 sexy hunks face off one another, when Rippley's magic produces things she had no intention of producing and every attempt makes it worse! Greer is a great MC, she's sassy, fierce, bows down to no one, yet still she clings to some hope to gain approval from her unfeeling parents. I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice NOT to read this book!

I have so many things I love about this book, that I honestly don't know where to start! This blurb hands down, is one of the best written ones I've read. But also? There is SO much more and it makes this book / series that much better! If you love an amazing, well rounded (slightly quirky) FMC, you may have found your new favorite. I know I have!

Her personality is a myriad of traits, from being strong, to having a big heart and super protective about those she loves. She's also got trust issues, and is vulnerable when it comes to the people in her life that should be there no matter what. One of the best things? Her inner monologue, oh my gosh this makes her SO much more relatable, especially to me.

Her guys are equally as amazing. I also loved how the authors did a great job with their personalities! Sometimes the guys can be too much alike, sometimes it makes sense but with a book like this, the different personalities are best. I don't have a favorite just yet, I'm going to let the guys and their relationship with Greer (the FMC), speak to me more 😉.

If you want a great storyline, world building, mixed harem, bada$$ FMC who's quirky and vulnerable, plus so much more? This is the right book for you!
