Ghosts and ghouls. Spooky sounds in the night. Whispering voices in dark rooms. Items moved by unseen forces. Shadowy figures vanishing into thin air.
East to west, north to south, Pennsylvania is filled with unexplainable phenomena. Best-selling author Tony Urban has researched more than 50 purportedly haunted locations from all corners of the keystone state and is here to tell the tales.
From the Pennhurst Asylum to the old Allegheny County Jail. From haunted houses to cursed cemeteries. Phantom founding fathers, fallen Civil War soldiers, and much more. Read their haunted histories and hear from eyewitnesses whose encounters with ghosts are impossible to forget.
A professional photographer, writer and fan of general weirdness (both real and imagined), Tony has traveled tens of thousands of miles seeking out everything from haunted locations, UFO crash sites and monsters like Bigfoot and the Mothman. In a previous life, he worked in the independent movie industry but he finds his current career much more exciting.
Tony's first writing memory involves penning a short story about taking a road trip with his best friend and his dog (two different creatures) to watch KoKo B Ware in a professional wrestling event in Pittsburgh. He wrote that epic saga while in the 3rd grade and it was all downhill from there. His first books were a series of o)eat travelogues but recently his zombie apocalypse series, "Life of the Dead" has been a bestseller online and grossed out readers all over the world. His ultimate goal in life is to be killed by a monster thought by most to be imaginary. Sasquatch, werewolves, chupacabras, he’s not picky. If that fails, he’d enjoy making a living as a full time writer. Which of those two scenarios is more likely is up to the readers to decide.
This was a fun trek through Pennsylvania's most haunted places. Some I have heard of and some were new to me. My favorite is The Eastern State Penitentiary which I've always wanted to go. Not just for the idea of it being haunted, but more for the history. One of the places that was talked about was Gettysburg. I have been there and have been to all the places that were mentioned that were haunted except for The Jennie Wade house. The place is steeped in so much amazing history. The Grand Midway hotel is somewhere I would like to visit. There is a huge Ouija Board painted on the roof and the hotel is supposedly haunted. Since I own a copy of the book, I'm planning to go chapter by chapter and read more about each location. Yes, that's what I sometimes do for fun 🤷♀️
A great book chock full of Pennsylvania haunted places that include local history and first hand encounters/witness testimony. Loved reading in stories and experiences. Happy to say that a few of my local places were featured in that book and reading this book just made them a hell of a lot creepier!
I’ve read several books by this author and have loved every single one of them! Being from Pennsylvania and finding hauntings fascinating I went on a search to find a great book, I was not disappointed!!! In fact this author has multiple Pennsylvania books on hauntings!
Short and interesting run down of many of the haunted locations in Pennsylvania. Sprinkled among dad jokes and non-quotable one-liners, the author brings the history and the supposed hauntings of each location.
Overall decent read (and some of the dad jokes weren't half bad), for those who enjoy paranormal places! There are some neat ones to add to the must see list!
If you are interested in Pennsylvania, history, locations and a good old ghost story, you will love this book. Just enough history to bring it to life while also providing the reader with a ready made map to follow and visit the locations in real life. Quick read, but definitely not just a “time killer”.
This is a good sampler of stories of haunted places in PA. Most of the chapters are really short, and I wanted more in some of the stories. I enjoyed the eyewitness accounts as they brought the places more to life.
Missing one thing -- pictures!!! I would have loved to see some pictures of these places. Otherwise, it was a very interesting and informative ghostly book. I totally enjoyed it!!!
