Change of Fortune by K.S. Jones is a well-written and fascinating account of a bold young woman who flees her domineering/abusive father to lay her own stake in the California Gold Rush. Quinn MacCann isn’t following the lure of “color” per se, but she intends upon setting up her own business in very much a man’s world. The written description of the hurly-burly gold rush days are fabulous.

Change of Fortune
by K.S. Jones
boom or bust, the California gold rush is an opportunity in the waiting. Young Quinn MacCann has struggled under the destitute yoke of her father, who found her and her departed mother a burden. She hatches a plan, but as most young girls’ plan in the early pioneering days, she does not account for the scoundrel's and difficulties of the California gold fields. Yet she is resolute to make it on her own merit even though outside of a pampered education she does not have many homely arts. The ups and downs of the story will draw the reader through the world of the 1849 Gold Rush. The difficulties for women, and children is markedly shown in its encompassing detail. Quinn is an enduring character that the reader will feel a remarkable connection to, and your heartstrings will be pulled by her hard won victory. It's a great story showing the resilience of human nature, and the beauty of the adventure westward.
