Charming. Devastatingly handsome. Ridiculously rich. Kristoff Baldwin came without warning. He made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, and before I could even realize the impact he was making, I was too far gone, despite knowing the consequences of falling.
A future together was the impossible dream. My past haunted me and even he had ghosts of his own.
Then everything changed when his past came after me and my daughters.
There are disguised blessings in every tragedy. Although I can’t help but wonder if my tragedy is about to destroy a once in a lifetime chance at love.
NOTE: This is republished story about Kristoff and Gemma. Changed from single to dual POV and story revised.

This soon became monotonous with all of the repetitive inner thoughts. It was the same thing over and over. Billionaire Kristoffer was cheated on by his ex 20 years ago. So now he hires PA’s to assist him both in business and to be his Fck buddy. He had them sign a rigorous contract and there must be no emotional attachment. When he meets Gemma she becomes the exception. The next 600 pages tell the tale.I got bored at about 30 percent and did a lot of skimming it was repetitive- and redundant,no repetitive and redundant. Yeah I’m back to my old Gilmore Girls quote…. I know I know, that’s repetitive and redundant.
The Exception is a super smexy emotional rollercoaster of a ride that hooks you from the first chapter! Gemma takes a new job with the ridiculously rich and sexy Kristoff Baldwin, too bad she doesn't read the second part of her employment contract which details his requirement for "services" outside the normal for an assistant. Against her better judgement, she decides for a "trial" period that will definitely help her take care of her girls. The agreement was for emotionally detached. It becomes quickly evident that's not going to be impossible - for either of them. But just as their futures become more entwined, their pasts are digging their claws in and neither are going to come away unscathed.
The Exception was previously published with just a single POV. I never read it and I would have never guessed this was a reworked story. Flowed super well. Great storyline with a ton of super hot smexy that just kept coming and coming *cough*. Kristoff and Gemma are both well developed and had tons of baggage they needed to work through and you become invested in the side characters as well: grandma, their friends, everyones kids. I liked how Kristof just couldn't stop himself with Gemma and I loved that Gemma stuck to her guns about Kristof's behavior and didn't just roll over for him. There was a bit of "miscommunication", but it was not the leading problem, so I was good with it. The Exception is an outstanding start to what's bound to be the next awesome series by Eva Winners!
The Exception is the prequel to the Billionaire Kings series by Eva Winners. It is a standalone and told in first person, from dual perspective.
Eva Winners doesn’t only write mafia. She recently released her brand new book.
“Both of us know this attraction between us will consume us. But only when you’re ready.”
The Exception - This is the first book in Eva’s brand new series Billionaire Kings series and it is an amazing read. It is definitely my favourite book she’s written to date. I love her mafia books but this book ticked every single box for me, couldn’t stop read and I couldn’t stop smiling all the way though even when it hurt a little bit.
This was most hilarious and heart warming, fiery book I’ve read in ages.!! It was so hot. I wish I could share all the dirty parts lol.
Gemma us a single mother of 3. Looking for a job. Kristoff is a CEO of his company. And he’s looking for a assistant who will fulfil all his needs.
Kristoff was married before and he was left hurt badly.
This is his and Gemma’s second chance. It’s a long road with lots of drama and heartache. Kristoff is a man who has had to work from the bottom to protect his mother and his company. Gemma comes into his life like a bulldozer. Turns it upside down. Her and her 3 children open his eyes to what he’s been missing out on.
I’m actually sad there story is over. I absolutely loved it. I’m exited for the next book in the series.
This is definitely a MUST READ.
This book may contain some triggers for some people. - domestic abuse.
Despite the length of this book, I found myself reading almost non-stop for three days straight! Obviously, work and life had to mix in there, but once I started this story, every possible moment I could, I read and read and read! *heart eyes*
The thing I loved the most about this story is that it’s a second chance for both Gemma and Kristoff to grab life by the horns and live!! They both have some serious emotional circumstances from their respective pasts that has them cautious and guarded when it comes to relationships. Their relationship begins as a transaction but soon evolves into much more. Throughout this progress we get a deliciously sexy, swoony, and emotional journey full of ups and downs, push and pull, and most of all heart!!
I honestly didn’t see everything this story has to offer coming. It’s not without its predictability factor, but the essence and whole of the story is just *happy sigh* This is going to be a series you do not want to miss! #trust
This was a amazing start to what I just know is going to be an awesome series! I really enjoyed this story it’s emotional dirty sexy and angsty I loved both characters their chemistry was explosive Kristof had me swooning so hard and my heart hurts for Gemma and all she had been through I loved all the side characters overall this was such a good story it’s a emotional sweet with a touch of kink journey and one I’m glad I read !
Tropes: office romance, billionaire romance, age-gap, some kink, single parent, forced proximity
Kristoff Baldwin was charming, gorgeous and very rich. He was in need of an assistant which brought Gemma to his door. When he asks her to sign a contract with a special clause, the single mom knows she has to refuse. But no one says no to Kristoff so he does what he must to get what he wants. Both have painful pasts and his could endanger her life along with her children. Would tragedy be a blessing or destroy her once in a lifetime chance at love?
This was another home run for Mrs. Winners. It also had a very realistic approach and had me getting emotional more then once. Her writing always takes me on a complete and spellbinding journey with every book I read of hers. This one was no different. I highly recommend this read. This is my honest opinion, freely given.
Gemma is married to an abusive husband with numerous infidelities to his name. She’d been a faithful wife, a loving mother to their three girls but enough was enough. Marriage for life wouldn’t cut it anymore. When he turns up at home angry and crazed because she was at home, working. Convinced she was having an affair, he refused to listen to reason frantically searching for her lover. When he painfully drags her upstairs Gemma knows she’s in serious trouble. One year later, Gemma is desperate for a new job. The bills won’t pay themselves. Gemma’s best friend Betty tells her about a PA job going that she’d be great for, so she goes for the interview. There she meets the most gorgeous man she has ever seen. His presence unnerves her. She’s never felt an attraction like this and it unsettles her. Kristoff is a gorgeous billionaire in his early 40’s that goes after what he wants in life. But after being betrayed by his ex wife and best friend, he treats women as a transaction to protect himself and his heart. He likes his PA’s to sign a contract to enjoy a no strings just lots of perks relationship with him. After meeting Gemma, Kristoff has to have her. She’s the most beautiful woman he’s ever met. He’s desperate for Gemma to sign the contract but so far they have a two month trial at the end of which she could walk away. Although his contract puts pressure on them in all the wrong ways, Gemma can’t dispute her attraction. She understands he’s been hurt but she needs a job to keep a roof over her three young daughters heads, but not at her prides expense. As their working relationship develops, Kristoff finds himself making small adjustments. Everyone that meets Gemma and her three daughters Sienna, Sierra and Saorise are taken by them, enamoured by them, including Kristoff’s mother. The girls find themselves getting more attached to Kristoff and Gemma’s not sure how to feel about that. He’s determined to find a way to keep her. As they both find themselves falling in love with each other, Kristoff’s jealous ex begins to cause all sorts of problems. And with his beautiful green eyes, the green eyed monster comes out to play far too much for Gemma’s liking, reminding her of her abusive ex too much…. A fabulous read. The banter and quick wit between Gemma and her friends and the relationship that deepens between her and Kristoff all richly entertain. There’s plenty of passion in the air. There are also links to the Ashford brothers. Her daughters have wonderful personalities with Saorise stealing the show. Absolutely brilliant.

No me gusta
Consent is just as sexy as the degradation and the praise. Kristoff delivered every. single. time. This man had me swooning and feeling all kinds of butterflies in my stomach lol... Also, is it bad that every time I saw his name before I started reading this book, I thought about Olaf. It's not even the correct Frozen character (I'll see myself out) 😂
It all started with a contract... and blackmail.
Kristoff and Gemma's chemistry is explosive with a tiny touch of kink. Like I mentioned he loves to ask for consent first, he degrades her a little bit, and picks it back up with praise. It's a perfect balance of all three. Of course, they both had past relationships with spouses that did a number on them so they're hesitant to give their complete trust on one another and it creates chaos and miscommunication. It felt me wanting to reach into the book and shake them. AGH.
Gemma's daughters stole the show every time they appeared. Just as Kristoff grew to love them from day one as his own, so did I. I loved them so much.
𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕: • billionaire romance • light kink • workplace romance • consent, degradation, and praise king • age gap • single mom • possessive alpha-h0le • surprise baby • strong fmc • morally grey • forced proximity • domestic violence
4/5⭐️ 3.5/5🌶️ 5/5🎧 So many things I loved about this book. I loved the aspect of a slightly older than usual couple. The mixed/found family. The single mother is hot and can’t be swayed by money aspect. It was such a beautiful story of a man who is used to getting his way and a woman who has fought some of life’s hardest battles. And although it was very long and could’ve been a bit shorter, I enjoyed the story and was invested.
Troy Duran and MacKenzie Cartwright narrated a perfect duet performance that brought the characters to life.
Eva Winners has once again captured my book heart. She’s laid out love, lust, fear, doubt, jealousy, and distrust. All wrapped up in her version of a love story. Must read!
A fantastic billionaire office romance from Eva Winners as widow Gemma goes for a job interview with Kristofer Baldwin little realising that there’s a bit more to the job than mere administrative tasks. When his proposition is met with a quick refusal, not used to being rejected Kristoff has investigators dig into Gemma’s background until he finds something he can hold over her head and blackmail her into a two month trial period solely as his assistant in an attempt to persuade the woman he is quickly becoming obsessed with into signing his contract for the extracurricular activities.
Told from dual points of view this story moves at a steady pace dealing mainly with the development of the relationship between Kristoff and Gemma. His extreme jealously when it came to any man who so much as looked at Gemma doesn’t do him any favours. It might seem understandable given how his marriage has ended but it seems like Gemma is being punished for his ex-wife’s crimes. Gemma has her own ghosts to deal with. After the hell of her first marriage she doubted her own judgement when it came to Kristoff especially given the extremity of his behaviour. I did like that the author only had Kristoff blackmailing Gemma into the professional element of his contract and he didn’t extort her into having sex. With the chemistry between them there wasn’t any doubt that she would eventually give into him. I loved the family dynamic between Gemma and her daughters and then latterly between Kristoff and the girls. He seemed to slide right into the family without trying too hard especially with the younger two although I would’ve liked to have seen more interaction from both Gemma and Kristoff about their relationship with the oldest daughter who was the only one of an age to really remember their father and surely must’ve had her own questions.
Mucho relleno. Para pasar el rato y hasta ahí.
'If there was only one word to describe this book, it would be 'powerful'. This book was simply powerful!' -TheBritishBibliophile
Thank you to Eva Winners for sending me an ebook Advanced Readers Copy of this as part of her ARC team for me to read and review. --------------------------
I was determined to read this behemoth of a book before or on release day (August 16th) and at 7am this morning UK time, I finally finished it! And it was worth pulling an all-nighter to finish. By no means is this book being a big one a bad thing because as I said in my 'currently reading' post over on Instagram, I intended to soak up every word of Eva Winners goodness as possible.
Plus, it's been a while since I've read such a lengthly novel, I was looking forward to spending a bit more time with the characters within.
The Exception is a re-publication of Kristoff & Gemma's original story which has changed from a single POV to a dual. That said, I before hadn't had the pleasure of reading their story, so this was a first-time reading about them at all for me and I couldn't wait to meet them. From the blurb alone, this story sounded as promising as any Eva Winners book and I'm thrilled to say that it's lived up to and more, any expectations I had of it before reading.
Stepping away from Eva's mafia men for a moment, we are thrown into a world which promises a Billionaire Office Romance trope read. This isn't a genre I read a lot of since the story doesn't usually vary or deviate from outside of the workplace very much, but since this is the Eva I've come to know and love, of course I gave this novel a chance. It's an Exception, if you will. Right off the bat because this amazing lady is at the helm, regardless of this is your go-to, or one of your go-to tropes, the story will be worth reading for alone. By that I mean anything that happens separate and around the billionaire, office, workplace romance novel tropes. There's more in this novel than just those tropes and I enjoyed very much so, discovering everything this novel had to offer.
The Exception boasts the following tropes:
✔ Billionaire ✔ Workplace Romance, Boss/Employee ✔ Single Parent ✔ Age Gap ✔ Damaged Heroine ✔ Afraid to Comit ✔ Alpha Male ✔ Sworn off Relationships
So you can see that The Exception already excels in giving us the goods without getting into the nitty gritty. When I say there's something in here that everyone will love, I mean it. We're truly spoiled for choice at just how much is packed into this novel. Again, not a complaint. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a novel that's had this much packed into it and dare I say it, I kind of want more Kristoff and Gemma. But shh, don't tell Eva!
(There is another trope but I've left it out as it would spoil the story before anyone has had a chance to read it)
Speaking of Kristoff and Gemma, let's talk about our main character for a moment shall we? Where to even begin! Gemma is a true ugly duckling becoming a swan in the blossoming sense, not in terms of beauty. Her transformation and character development--it has to be said--is by far and large the most impressive I've read in a book to date. And I've read a lot of books. Her character was already admirable from when we first met her, but she goes on to be that and so much more. This is a heroine I can get behind and fully support. As for Kristoff? Woah and woah again! Being a billionaire, he was always naturally going to be the brooding, alpha-male type, but I don't think I was quite prepared for just how full-on, domineering and swoon-worthy he could be. On top of being a bit of a hard-headed AlphaHole, that goes without saying. I don't even think I can put it into words how dynamic, explosive and just plain right these two are for each other. The only way you'll understand what I mean is if you read this book yourself.
I said at the beginning of my review that I was up until 7am reading this book to finish it for release day. In truth, that was only half of the truth. I was up till that time because it was absolutely impossible to put down or put a bookmark on the page to pick up later on. Things got to the point of no return where I just kept reading and reading, hungry to find out if Kristoff and Gemma got their Happily Ever After, and how their story would end in this novel. It's very rare for me these days to stay awake all night, pulling an all-nighter to finish a book and this one was hands down worth tenfold.
If you're looking for your next five star read and book on your shelf, you've found it here.
The Exception is a Prequel to Billionaire Kings Series. And can be read as a complete standalone.
Genevieve is a single mother of 3. She’s a widow. Losing her job, she’s struggling to make ends meet. She has a dark past and all she wants to do is work to take care of her girls.
Kristoff is a billionaire and CEO. Handsome and charming. Also with a dark past, he trusts no women. And keeps “relationships” strictly professional. No emotional attachments.
Gemmas best friend finds her an interview at Kristoffs company. With one look at her Kristoff wants her. So he makes her an offer she can’t refuse. All she has to do is sign a contract. She’s desperate for a job that will keep a roof over her and her daughters head. She’ll do just about anything for a job. But will she agree to Kristoffs work conditions? He won’t take no for an answer. Even if he has to blackmail her. Agreeing on a work trial, thats strictly just professional. But can they keep it professional when the pull & sexual tension between them grows more and more everyday? With an unexpected surprise. Danger and threats coming to Gemma from Kristoffs past. And when feelings and jealousy get in the way will a future for them ever be possible?
Ok first off let me just say, how amazing this book is. This is Eva Winners first billionaire romance. If you’ve read any of her books before you know she’s queen at writing mafia romances. This book was so well written. From the relationship between the characters, you could feel the connection growing between them throughout the book. Even to the spice. And let me tell you Kristoff and his dirty mouth are HOT! 🥵🔥I absolutely loved both characters growth throughout the story. They were so meant for each other. This is an amazing book and definitely a must read! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Tropes: Boss/employee, Blackmail, single Mom Angsty, smexy and swoony
I was hooked from the first chapter! This is an emotional rollercoaster of a story that is also super smexy. Gemma, a widowed single Mom, takes a new job working for ultra handsome and rich Kristoff, except she doesn't read the second contract which requires "services" outside of normal admin duties. She ultimately decides to give it a trial period. The one agreement is no emotional attachment. It quickly becomes evident that will not be possible for either one of them. As their lives become more entwined, the ghosts of their pasts come creeping back causing twists and turns.
The Exception was previously published in single POV and I had not read it. It has been reworked and is dual POV and I would have never guessed. Both Gemma and Kris have pasts that continue to haunt them. Gemma's have her doubting her strength and some self confidence issues and Kris's cause him to be jealous and doubtful. I love that Gemma sticks to her guns and doesn't back down. And Kristoffs character development and the way his feelings develop for both Gemma and her girls is chefs kiss 🤌🤌 He comes across as cold and domineering but also has a caring and swoony side. And dang, their chemistry is off the charts 🥵
I LOVE Eva's writing and storytelling capabilities, and this did not disappoint. She can write the heck out of a Mafia book, which I am 100% here for, and this is connected to the Belles & Mobsters world. But she can also write amazing Billionaire books too! A fantastic start to the Billionaire Kings series!!
*I received a free copy for review and my honest opinion *
Wow this book was dirty talking perfection. I did spend the the majority of the book swinging between thinking Kristoff was absolute romance lead heaven (all that determination and dominance) and a complete uncommunicative wally. He had moments of just absolute idealism and then some parts he got so very wrong. Both characters spent so long not communicating and second guessing the others thoughts, desires and intentions. But the journey was worth the investment. As with all the best romances, their backgrounds explain their issues and you get deeply entangled in their hang ups and their need for their own types of control.
Kristoff is the controlled billionaire who likes his emotional entanglements of the controlled contractual variety. Gemma is widow with three girls to raise on her own. The admin job with Kristoff seems almost too good to be true. Neither bargains on their emotions getting caught up along the way.
This was an adorable billionaire/single parent romance. Some of Kristoff's best moments are when he steps up to protect and take on the fatherly role to Gemma's daughters. He was everything you would want. But he was determined to self sabotage and ruin his own happiness. I agreed whole heartedly with Gemma's need to be in an equal and functional relationship having escaped from a situation of domestic violence.
Regardless of the tumultuous journey, these two are destined and their HEA is perfect. Theirs is a super steamy and heated romance leading to an adorably perfect resolution.
Another phenomenal book by Eva. I didn’t get to read the original version of this wonderful story but I absolutely loved her rewrite. Especially since the rewrite had duel POV. I just love when you get the views from both main characters, it just gives the story so much more.
This is Kristoff and Gemma’s story and it is a wild and phenomenal story. Gemma is a widow and mother of two daughters in need of a job, Kristoff is in need of a new assistant but has certain requirements for his assistants and when Gemma hears what that is she decides she can’t do the job. But Kristoff is not willing to let her get away so easily and after digging and finding what he needs he makes it so that she can’t refuse and reluctantly decides to give it a trial run. The chemistry and passion between these two is absolutely perfect. As it always is with the perfect couples Eva creates for us to fall in love with.
But with all of Eva’s books there are twists and turns and pasts full of danger that keep us on the edge of our seat and steam to keep us fanning ourselves. If you’ve read Eva’s books then you already know this will be one fantastic book to read, and if you haven’t then yes this is an absolute must read as with all her books!! Absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it!!
What a gem. I loved this book I fell in love with Kristoff and Gemma. This is a spicy alphahole billionaire treat and I’m here for it. I saw someone say its like 50 shades. It’s BETTER … but not for just the reasons you’re thinking. It is 100% nothing like 50 shades in fact it has a passing joke about BDSM so if you include that then ok it is. *shakes head no* And yes it has a contract but its not what you expect and thats the beauty in it. Billionaire romances are always fun reads but this one was special in my opinion for multiple reasons. First being the MC’s age. Our Gemma is tough and shes not some young 20 something (not hating was just an interesting change of pace). She has to be for her kids. And he is older too he’s not your basic playboy with a ton of money. His past demands respect and I loved that. But what gets me is that both of our MC’s are morally grey. That’s all I will say about that. *wink wink* at least that is my opinion. The themes and concepts E. Winners hits on are so real. Trust is such a difficult thing and I feel like she really displayed it well between both characters. I don’t have kids but I identified with Gemma a lot and that’s when you know you’ve got a good book. I loved this one, I couldn’t put it down! This is a prequel to the Billionaire Kings series. This whole series is related to Belles and Mobsters. E. Winners is the mafia queen but she sure as heck is going to make an even bigger splash in the billionaire trope! (Her earlier works include some billionaire romances unrelated to B&M)
If I could just write that as my review, I would. Wowzas! This book had me devouring the pages as fast as I could. I literally couldn't get enough.
Single mom Gemma takes a job as an assistant to billionaire Kristoff Baldwin. However, there is a second contract that she refuses to sign - one that requires her 'services' outside of normal office hours and definitely outside of normal assistant duties. Yet, Gemma is hiding a secret to protect her daughters. But, Kristoff's past could threaten their future together.
The Exception was previously published as a single POV, yet I can't even imagine it as anything but dual. It flowed so fluently, the storyline was spot on, and I was on the edge of my seat. It was a sexy, angsty, suspenseful read that... yep, I'm at a loss for words. It was amazing. It was exactly the kind of book I wanted to read but didn't know I needed to read.
Eva Winners has once again captured my book heart. She’s laid out love, lust, fear, doubt, jealousy, and distrust. All wrapped up in her version of a love story.
Kristoff Baldwin and Gemma Rose were definitely an opposites attract. He was a dominating force in the business world and behind closed doors. Gemma was quite simply the beautiful and gentle soul that he found the need to possess.
Kristoff found himself utterly enraptured by Gemma. But he knew he should walk away. She didn’t succumb to his money or his power. But for the sake of her family, she allowed herself to cross lines she found necessary in order to keep them safe. And Kristoff used that weakness. Except Gemma was slowly gaining ground. Not only was she a valued employee, but she was becoming the woman that he wanted and needed. She broke down walls, he found solace in her. And Gemma was allowing herself to live again. She was enjoying her time with Kristoff, minus his moments of jealousy. But he was still so hot and cold. Gemma wanted him but needed more from him.
These two had an unconventional beginning. The middle was inspiring, and what began as their ending was heartbreaking. Through it all, Gemma was the heroine we absolutely loved. And Kristoff, he most definitely was the stubborn and unwavering force field of a Hero we root for.
