This is my third issue of the series Fun Girl by Elizabeth Pich, produced by Silver Sprocket, a mostly women alt comix publisher that seems like an attempt to revive the vibe of sixties alt comix in all its glorious, hilarious vulgarity. Not for kids. Deliberate line-crossing for yuks. And let's see, how do I write about this in a social media site known generally for respectful communion?!
Fungirl is fired from a corndog shop; she's a kind of loser that would seem to recall the creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, two concave-chested guys that admitted they had more than once had sand kicked in their face at the beach by Adonis musclemen. They dreamed of transforming their Clark Kent-ness into Superman (suddenly adored by Lois Lane, who ordinarily would look right through them). A superhero fantasy!
Fun Girl , who hasn't had a date in forever, and who breaks into her roommate always just at the point he is going ot have sex with his girlfriend, finally gets a date and on said date discovers her superpower (let's see, how do I say it?), centered exactly on her. . . vulva? Early on, it seems it is merely a kind of destructive power, as she actually breaks off the nose of her date with that part of her body! But she can change her life with this superpower! A funny, smutty comic that is maybe funnier in the conception than the execution, but the more I write about it, the better I like it.
Umm... what on this green earth did I just read?! And I mean that in a good but mildly confused way. I picked this up as a quick library e-book read and was left with the above thought.
- Best I can interpret events is a hotdog sales person finds a date and her vulva proves to be somewhat powerful. What follows is laughter-inducing and perplexing.
- This is a graphic novel and the art style is cool and fits the story well. I like the weird way the artist shows everything.
If you like weird, explicit cartoons that give you a giggle, then give this strange little book a go!
Readers note: I read the ebook version (51 pages).
I’m honestly hella confused about this comic. I thought it was going to be a pussy-power, empowering comic about vulvas in some way, but I found most of the comic demonised them-as if they aren’t so much already. Maybe that was the point? But I think it could’ve been executed better. It felt like a fever dream.
Not sure why anyonr would think it demonize women. I thought it was funny and actually ""empowering"" (the MC's superpower resides in her vulva). I'd like to read more stuff like that. The simple style, the comics Inspo, the characters/Dialogue and and the colors are very nice.
(4) Trop hâte de découvrir Fun Girl ! On est clairement face à un humour un peu what the fuck mais qui passe bien. Et le travail éditorial autour du bouquin est de qualité.
No? Like it's not bad -- just cotton candy - sweet but lacking in a lot of substance. The art is kinda nice. Ish. Yeah no this isn't for me but it's not horrible.
