Unleashing the Most Disturbing Events That James Has to Endure

After winning an egame tournament that night, James’ electrifying victory earns him a spot among the top ten best gamers in the world.

James is undoubtedly a talented gamer; his relentless wins don’t go unnoticed. As luck would have it, a gaming company that happens to be scouting around quickly uses this opportunity to sign him up. They pitch James an offer they know he won’t refuse. James always wonders what’s it like living in the big city. Deep in his heart, he figures there is more to life than being stuck in his hometown.

The company needs James to lead a winning campaign that will revolutionize the gaming industry for decades. After living in the city for a few months, he feels like he is living on cloud nine, living the good life.

But that’s where the good life ends. The company’s decision to add a new patch to its upcoming game does not help when it is so close to the launch date. James has worked on other patches and solved them effortlessly, but this patch is unlike any others. So much so that it affected James’ health physically and mentally. Despite the difficulty, he has never backed down on any challenges.

The problem doesn’t end there; it is merely the beginning. James isn’t aware at first, but then, strange things keep piling up bit by bit. He begins seeing things and hearing things he cannot understand. From there, a series of disturbing events rain hell on him. It is driving him to the brink of insanity. And it all starts from the glitches of this new patch, leaving him with more questions than answers.

What's an arcade? Is that the place in 'Tron'...?
The first page reminded me of my teenage years hanging out at the arcade down the street from my cousins’ rural home. The only other thing to do was to hang out sitting under the overpass up the street. Seriously…
It’s no wonder I got so good at Asteroids!

I also remember the panic around the Y2K scare with “everyone and their mother” scrambling to recode ever.y.thing.

Not sure why James thinks he’s a young adult at age 16 when he won’t be an adult for another two years. But anyway…

The author did point out early on that James changed from individual play to group play; the latter having at least some social aspect to it. I’d like to see our youth spending more time outside. GAWD, but I sound like my parents!

There's a great freakiness factor that leads into the next in series: 'Fearful'.

James and all his friends, Kelly, Patrick, Jordan, and Nicky all love playing games but they have only played at home. One day when they are out they see a new game, a game that is to be played in public. They are not too thrilled about playing in front of people but decide to give it a go.

James and his friends are called The Fever Crew. Well, James and The Fever Crew become so good at playing this game that they decide to enter a contest. The game was hot and intense I was on the edge of my seat pulling for them from the moment they began to play.

Afterwards James receives a letter from one of the leading technology companies in the country offering him a job with their company on a new project.

It was a fun short story. It reads like a prologue to the rest of the trilogy. My only note is that the grammar wasn’t fully corrected before publishing.
