Robyn Elaine Donald was born on 14 August 1940 in Northland, New Zealand. She was the oldest child in her family, and as a child, she thrilled her four sisters and one brother with bloodcurdling adventure tales, usually very like the latest book she'd borrowed from the library.

Robyn owes her writing career to two illnesses. The first was a younger sister's flu. She was living with her husband and Robyn and spent most of that winter acquiring, suffering, and recovering from various infections. One day she croaked that she had read everything on Robyn's bookshelves, so would Robyn please buy her something cheerful and sustaining. Robyn found three paperbacks- one Mills and Boon Modern Romance novel and a couple of other romances. Robyn read them, too, of course, and so enjoyed them she spent the next couple of years hunting down more Mills and Boon books. This was much more difficult then than it is today, so she decided to write her own, and for the following busy 10 years she wrote and hoped that one day she would finish a manuscript good enough that was good enough to send to a publisher.

The second illness was her husband's, and it was bad a heart attack. He was so young it terrified them all. While he was recovering, he suggested that Robyn finish the manuscript she was writing and send it off. It wasn't a perfect manuscript, but the doctor had said to humour her husband, so she finished the manuscript, edited it as best she could, and sent it off. Three months later, she was astounded to read a letter from the editor saying that if She made a few revisions they would buy her novel Bride at Whangatapu.

Published since 1977, Robyn sees her readers as intelligent women who insist on accurate backgrounds, so she spends time researching as well as writing.Robyn Donald sometimes thinks that writing is much like gardening. It's a similar process creating landscapes for the mind and emotions from the seeds of ideas and dreams and images. Both activities can also lead to moments of extreme delight, moments of total despair, and backache. Now Robyn lives in the Bay Islands. She continues writing, and also finds time for a very supportive husband, two adult children and their partners, a granddaughter and her mother, not to mention the member of the family that keeps her fit - a loud, cheerful, and ruthlessly determined "almost" Labradordog.

Re The Mirror Bride - Robyn Donald's semi-mystic trilogy called The Marriage Maker focuses on an ivory miniature portrait that seems to possess the power to unite True Loves together in wedded bliss.

The only caveat being, as our heroine's will find out, that you must pass on the portrait after winning your love or your love is cursed to wither and fade.

Robyn Donald must have had lunch with Anne Mather to come up with the trope for the first of the trilogy, we are going to do the 'Keeping It In the Family and Desperate Child Needs Surgery' trope for this HPlandia outing.

This one starts with the h having a dream about the woman pictured on a miniature painting that was owned by her now deceased mother. The h is 23 and has been on the run and in hiding from her evil stepfather for five years. She also has her six year old brother with her and it is for his sake that she maintains her undercover lifestyle.

The h's mother was a stunningly beautiful, but very vacuous woman who was married to an abusive bully. In her misery and desperation, she had an affair with a young male whose parent's were friends of the family and as a token of his affection, he gave her the miniature. She had a child by that man and revealed that fact to her abusive husband, then the mother mysteriously fell and hit her head and died.

The h is convinced that her stepfather murdered her mother, even tho the inquest came back with an accident verdict. Fearing for her little brother's safety because the stepfather nematode was enraged by the fact that his possession bore another man's child, the h takes off with her brother to the requisite HP grotty flat and beans on crumbs lifestyle with no little school outings for fun because the h can't afford it.

Five years later, the h dreams that the lady depicted on the miniature is telling her to write to the H, who was not only her mother's seekrit lover, but also the h's big time teen crush when they spent the summer in proximity to one another.

The h's heart was shattered when her mother confessed to the affair, but the time has come for her brother's father to step up to the plate. The h is ill, her little brother needs surgery to save his hearing and the h is at her financial wit's end.

So she writes to the H and he shows up at her grotty bedsit, convinced that the h is intent on blackmailing him and ready to tell her off. The H is already irked at the h's stepfather, he embezzled all the H's winnings from racing after the h's mother claimed he was her affair partner and the H vowed dire retribution and vengeance at the time.

But the H's mother was very ill with cancer and needed his support, the H also had to go off and make a fortune as a prerequisite to starring as an HP H, so H's wreaking step father vengeance got delayed for a long while.

When the H is talking with the h, the h's little brother walks out to see the H and he is carrying the miniature. The H notices the miniature and decides that the h and little brother will be moving in with him. Everybody is whisked off to the H's palatial home, where we meet his devoted butler and the h can reject all the H's attempt to buy her clothes and some creature comforts while she is nursed through her illness.

Soon the h is feeling displaced and also a bit torn emotionally. Her little brother gets his ear surgery and his hearing is saved, but the h also has a POWERFUL pull towards the H's Lurve Force Mojo. This naturally horrifies her, cause the H slept with her mother. There is even a DNA test that the h believes proves it.

So the h makes a campaign out of rejecting the H's fashion accouterments and sewing her own as a form of passive aggressive resistance to the H taking things over. We get a little visit with the H and h from Dark Fire and the h's nematode parasite step father tracks the h down to make threats about kidnapping and prosecution.

The h decides that she and the H need to marry ASAP, to make a better presentation for the family court judge because the evil stepfather is threatening a custody battle. There is more h and H tension when the H demands the h fake being happily married in front of others and we also meet the h from the next book in the series, who seems to have an unrequited love for this H.

There are more H attempts at roofie kissing and gropey moments, which all end in the h rejecting the H in horror over sleeping with her mother's lover. The H makes a halfhearted attempt to explain something about him and her mother, but the h pretty adamantly cuts him off.

Then the evil stepfather rides in on his broom and we learn that the H is NOT the h's little brother's father. A court battle and kidnapping charges loom and the h is sick at heart over losing her brother, not having a lurve club extravaganza with the H and not trusting the H to take care of things, which leads to the HP required mopey moment.

The H has a full bag of tricks tho and when the evil stepfather makes his play, the H pulls out a full host of evil stepfather banishing bombshells.

First, the stepfather also embezzled his wife's and the h's trust funds and fled to Australia. He never reported the h or the little brother missing and in fact lied to people about her whereabouts.

Second, while in Australia, the evil stepfather continued his re-appropriation activities with other people's money and now he has created a financial mess to rival Bernie Madoff's. The h's little brother also has a seekrit trust fund left to him by a super wealthy relative and the stepfather needs that money to get himself out of a prison sentence.

Finally there is not only DNA proof that the stepfather isn't the little boy's father, there is also the question of murdering the h's mother - the stepfather admits he hit the lady while she was ill, which essentially caused her to fall and hit her head and die.

The H offers to 'fix' all of these things and give the slime pustule nematode an allowance if he gives up his custody battle. The stepfather agrees and the H and h can now freely consummate their love for each other in a Purple Passion Lurve Club Extravaganza, after which the H vows never to lie to the h again.

The H and h can now make avowals of true love forever and we learn that the H's father is the real bio father of the h's little brother. The H is adopted, because his mum couldn't have kids. Then she got cancer and the H's father had an affair with the h's mum in his despair.

The h's mum lied about the paternity of her son to spare the H's mother pain during her illness and the H kept lying about the true paternity to keep the h from telling his mother as well. The H recognized the miniature as one belonging to his father right away and that is why the H moved the h and brother into his home, (plus there was the Lurve Force Mojo feeling moving things along in classic HP tradition.)

The H's father originally bought the miniature and then passed it to the h's mother, but because the H's father never passed the miniature on when he met his true love, his love was doomed by death and sorrow.

But now the H and h are together, the stepfather is bought off and vanished into the HP mists, the little brother is safe and doing well and the h has a feeling that the miniature will find it way to it's next victim as sequel bait for the next book.

So we can safely leave the two of them lurvin' it up in Transcendent HP HEA Bliss and move on to the next port of call on our HP outings.

This book mostly squicked me out. It is well written and the plot is engaging, but I couldn't overcome my horror of A) the continual reminder in the h's mind at intimate moments that the H was her mother's lover, (even tho that turned out not to be true, it was used as a coitus interruptus enough that it was kinda gross,)

and B) that for all intents and purposes, the stepfather gets away with fraud and negligent homicide at the very least and is also set free to go out and defraud, abuse and possibly murder other people.

(Srsly, I know people in love can be single minded and selfish, but the H actively encouraging a man who is a violent felon to go out and commit more felonies by providing no consequences for his actions was a bit beyond my comfort level.)

Even the lenient standards of no punishment for wrong doing in HPlandia should have been adjusted for this level of malfeasance, but RD chose not to there and it weakened the H's character not to see justice done. I found this very disappointing, cause RD has no problems punishing her h's SEVERELY for their transgressions and I don't recall any of them killing anyone.

The h was also a bit of a letdown from the standard RD h, she just did not have the usual backbone or will power of a regular RD character. I liked her, but I wasn't really liking her and I felt a bit sorry for her, she never got justice for herself or her mother and I wasn't sure that the H's avowal of devotion was enough to make up for that.

Still, it is a very entertaining book in the drama angst stakes and RD knows how to build suspense. The miniature being a focus for magical romance is a cute little twist and to be fair, there are much worse outings in HPlandia, so you don't have to run away screaming if you run into it.

A surprisingly tame story of a heroine who is raising her half-brother after running away from their evil step-father at age 17. Heroine's mother died of head injuries soon after her son was born and heroine thinks her stepfather murdered her in revenge for having a child by the hero.

To further the angst, the heroine had been flirting with the hero all summer and fell in love with him. They never had sex, and the heroine feels extra-betrayed because he went to her mother for his grown up fun.

Heroine's brother is now 6 and needs an ear operation or he'll go deaf. Heroine hasn't claimed any benefits because she doesn't want the step-father to know where they are. Now she's lost her job, it's raining, she has bronchitis and she sees the hero's face in a magazine. After giving up his car-racing days, he's now a millionaire. Heroine decides with the help of a miniature portrait* he can/must help.

Hero thinks she is blackmailing him, and agrees to a DNA test. Hero does get the results, but he never explicitly tells the heroine what they were. Instead, he takes the heroine and her brother to his estate where the heroine collapses from the bronchitis.

The brother loves the house and is looking forward to his surgery, etc . . . The heroine tries to stay independent by sewing all of her own clothes, but the hero isn't too impressed.

Meanwhile the stepdad rears his head, threatening kidnap charges and lawsuits. Heroine proposes a marriage of convenience to the hero and he agrees. (Her yellow diamond engagement sounds absolutely gorgeous - a sure sign this hero was smitten.)

Eventually the hero (with the help of the portrait that was his father's prize possession) realizes who the father of the little boy is.

Heroine is relieved to hear it and now they can consummate their marriage. And they are going pay if forward with the portrait to help match-make some other lucky couple.

Like I said, this was pretty tame. The hero really doesn't know what the heroine was up to since he knew he hadn't had sex with the heroine's mother. So his foul mood is understandable. He had been smitten with the h back then but she was too young. He quickly falls for her again and it was just a matter of clearing up misunderstandings.

*This part was weird, The miniature will be part of the series helping match-make H/h for two more books.

3-1/2 stars. Plenty of angst. Kept my interest throughout and there was a nice bit of vulnerability on the hero's part that was nice to read. The heroine was spunky but misguided but she did the best she could with the info she had. I do sometimes like stories where the heroine is physically weak as she was here.

I think I liked this better on my reread.

"The Mirror Bride" is the story of Olivia and Drake.

The heroine is on a run from an evil stepfather and has struggled to make ends meet for almost 5 years. Now she is unemployed, and in desperate need for funds to help her half sibling's illness.
She approaches the hero, who is believes is the brother's real father and blackmails him into taking responsibility.
The paternity drama forms majority of the story and stretches for way too long.

I liked this one quite a bit -- maybe 4.5 stars' worth. Mountains of angst, which is always fun. I like a falling-apart heroine who is barely scraping by, too-thin, and fainty. :-) You had good hints that this hero was smitten the whole time, too. Only downside was that there wasn't a lot of action until the end. In fact there was some surprisingly frank descriptions of sex (or at least frank innuendo and the word "erection" used) given that there wasn't all that much in it. The mystic miniature element was fine -- didn't really add to the story, but didn't detract either. Overall, a good read!

The Mirror Bride

Lies told tend to damage relations. Here is a timeless story of someone wanting to protect a family member to the extent of a lie. Not a favorite to read. But there is an HEA ending.
