A boxer who’s tired of fighting. A persecuted woman with an unwanted suitor. A marriage neither of them want, but both desperately need.
James Fisher is Champion of the Kansas City Pugilist Society, but it's a title he doesn't wear proudly. When the man he won the last match with dies overnight from his injuries, James doesn't want to see good people hurt for sport. The only problem is that his contract with the Pugilist Society remains in effect until death or marriage.
But who wants to marry a bruised and broken boxer?
When Abigail Lee's house is foreclosed on, she's left desolate but not alone. Her best friend, a former slave, is willing to allow her to live with them. But the people in town don't like her living situation, and an unwanted suitor comes knocking on the door, making threats. Abby doesn't want anyone to be hurt on her account but feels stuck between the frying pan and the fire until Cecilia comes up with a plan.
This is a short, clean and wholesome, American western historical romance. The 15th in The Proxy Bride Series. Each book is a stand-alone HEA romance and can be read in no particular order.
P. Creeden is the sweet romance and mystery pen name for USA Today Bestselling Author Pauline Creeden. Her stories feature down-to-earth characters who often feel like they are undeserving of love for one reason or another and are surprised when love finds them.
P. Creeden married her college sweetheart, who she also met at a horse farm. Together they raise a menagerie of animals and their one son, an avid reader, himself. Animals are the supporting characters of many of her stories, because they occupy her daily life on the farm, too. From dogs, cats, and goldfish to horses, chickens, and geckos—she believes life around pets is so much better, even if they are fictional.
...that is the last thing Abby and James expect to find in their Proxy marriage but it is heartwarming that that is exactly what they do find. They have both lead hard and difficult lives and experienced far more than anyone so young should have to, but despite this they both retain an innocence that is sweet and endearing. They have huge hearts and a respect for others that cannot be crushed no matter how disappointing and difficult their own lives become. They are a very cute couple who certainly deserve a long and healthy HEA. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
James has been a Pugilist since he was a youngster on the streets. One of his opponents recently died and now James is having trouble keeping going. The Society took him in and the only way to get out is Death or Marriage. Abigail's home has been sold after the War and she's staying with her old servants. But a creepy guy won't take no when he keeps proposing and is now threatening all the people she's staying with. The War may be over but prejudice still runs deep. Her friend's cousin lives out West and has a friend who wants to marry. She agrees so that everyone can stay safe and she will have a permanent home. What happens when she falls ill upon arriving to meet James? Will he care for her? The Society is pressuring him that if she dies, he'll have to go back to fighting. Will he be able to care for her? Will he find a job to support them? This is a clean, sweet romance. It was really cute.
Abigail Lee and James Fisher enter into a proxy marriage of convenience to save each other from the hand life has dealt them. Abigail wants to escape poverty and an unwelcome suitor after she loses her home and the family she is living with is threatened. According to his contract, the only way pugilist James can get out of prize fighting is through marriage. I thought for a big guy James was really sweet and gentle taking care of Abigail when she arrives sick on the train and being considerate by letting her have the bed alone. This was a sweet marriage of convenience romance.
This is Book #15 in The Proxy Brides series and is the story of Abigal Lee and James Fisher. The characters are strong and believable. Abigal wants to escape an unwanted suitor and James, who is a fighter, wants to quit fighting but to do so he must either die or marry. A proxy marriage is arranged for the couple by a cousin of each of them who happen to be friends. Despite being a fighter, James is very loving, kind and tender towards Abigal and the couple find their HEA. I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it. I look forward to more books in the series by this author.
This was a cute romance and quick reading. The characters were intriguing and quite lovable. The plot was interesting and engaging. It really makes you want to keep reading to find out the outcome. However, I felt it was too short. Creeden could have easily extended their story. I felt like there was a rush to finish the book. As if the writer ran out of time and had to make them fall in love quickly. Nonetheless, a nice story and good writing. I give it 3.5
Abigail is a Southern belle who loses her home to foreclosure and becomes a proxy bride on the advice of her family’s previous slaves that she has been living with. A drunken, slimy local man keeps hounding her to marry him, so she flees to marry James in Missouri.
Cute, sweet story. Only wish the romance would have developed sooner, but the epilogue was great 😊
A great read! I loved the characters, each character was someone I would enjoy spending time with today. I felt I knew them personally. The story was great, had me laughing, Abigail is such a hoot! A sweet soft romance, I look forward to reading more by P Creeden. Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
This is a very well written book that I read in one setting. I couldn't put it down, I had to know what was going to happen next. If you like clean romance books, you will love this story. I received a free copy of this book and was not required to write a review. This is my honest opinion of the book. It was a joy to read.
James was in a pickle. He was a fighter and her need a wife. Abby was an orphan and had lost her home with a bike man as an unwanted suitor and needed a husband from a place far from her home. They married by proxy will they find love and happiness? You will enjoy this short sweet story.
I almost skipped reading this book in the series, because James was a pugilist and I didn't think I would like it. Boy, was I wrong. I really enjoyed this book. The characters and plot were great and once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Another great addition to this series.
I very much enjoyed the characters and plot in A Bride for James. P. Dresden did an excellent job creating the character of the pugilist. I didn't expect to particularly like this story, however was surprised by how sweet and interesting it was.
I enjoyed James and Abigail story, it was exciting, fun and sweet, sure they had a rough start, but they stayed together, and helped each other. Thank you P. Creeden.
After the Civil War, Abby finds herself homeless. James, a pugilist, finds himself in need of a wife and home to be out of his contract. A match made from Kansas to Virginia.
This was one of my favorites, I enjoyed everything in the story. Please include some more people of color in your stories, give them a life other than friends. They need some happiness. I haven't stopped smiling. Truly an enjoyable read. Please keep them coming
Sweet story with good characters and interesting storyline.
Enjoyed this clean romance. Easy read that keeps your interest. Loved the lack of prejudice with the main characters. Unexpected elements throughout the book.
Enjoyed the book it just flowed along. One of the better books in this series. All the characters were believable. Not a lot of characters in the book. No going back and forth to different times or places. Nice read for a lazy Sunday.
This was a great book. The writing is excellent. The characters and plot flowed nicely and I didn't want to put down the book. This is a fantastic clean read!
Abigail and James both need marriage to get them out of their situations so she marries by proxy and travels from Virgins to Kansas City Missouri. - Babs
Such a great series. I really enjoyed this story of a tired broken man and a sweet lady who is desperate. James is a sweet caring man and the love is special.
James- a pugilist but want a different life and only way to do that is to be married. Abigail/Abbie- had to live with friends/former slaves but when it but them in danger she agreed to a proxy marriage. I enjoyed reading this captivating story that is well written with lovable characters. Their story has a sweet HEA!.
