I have often wondered with both genuine puzzlement and rage, why the radical Left seems to have vigorously supported every murderous tyranny on the face of the earth, providing it is anti-Western. It has always been galling and sickening how left wing radicals have had no humanity towards anyone who was a victim of the totalitarian regimes or bloodthirsty terrorist movements that they have supported over the last century. The shameful death cult odyssey that has lead left wing radicals of the intellectual elite, academics, lawyers, writers, entertainers and others to always identify with the most evil and monstrous regimes and leaders on this planet and to pretend to turn a blind eye to the death and destruction they have sowed (while in reality enjoying it) is what the author explores in detail in this outstanding analytical, penetrating book, which is scholarly and yet boils the blood and fills one with horror especially when it confirms the tip of the iceberg that we have seen before reading it. The Leftist wishes to punish the West for their rejection of Marxism and so has found in the Islamist terror, the new heroes to venerate as those who are able to defeat the West and the individual freedom it represents.
At the roots of this phenomenon is a nihilistic death impulse rooted in the resentment by the Western Leftists of their own societies which makes them identify with anything which is adversarial against the Western culture they so despise, no matter how destructive and murderous. This erases any empathy for the victims of these regimes and terror networks. This is what the author refers to as the adversarial culture of negative identification.
The central question that this boils down to is that the Leftist has not found satisfaction or meaningful relations in his or her own life, despite their accumulation of wealth and luxury (as the Western left is almost always drawn from the ranks of the well off, and not of the working classes) and this is what fuels their rage against their own societies, leading them to look to Utopian but non-Spiritual solutions. "Meanwhile the believer is utterly indifferent to the real life suffering of the actual human beings victimized by the regimes that he glorifies The victims of the adversarial ideology do not fit into the believers agenda, and so they do not matter, and they are not, ultimately even human is his eyes. Because they are not human for him, the believer sees them as enemies and therefore supports their extermination. Once again, in the mutated Judeo-Christian imagery, blood cleanses the world of it's injustices and then redeems it-transforming it into a place where the believer will eventually find a comfortable home".
Thus the Leftists who venerated Lenin and Stalin would not feel any sympathy for the victims of their purges, dekulakization and forced famine. The admirers of Mao would not feel anything for the millions of victims of cultural revolution or tens of millions of Chinese who starved to death during the Great Leap forward. Similar callousness would be shown to the victims of the Khmer Rouge-a third of Cambodia's population or the tens of tortured and murdered by the Castro regime in Cuba or the Sandinistas in Nicaragua (who engaged in ethnic cleansing of that nations Miskito Indians-Revolutionary regimes often engage in genocide against minorities).. The Left's unholy death cult worship of Arab and Islamic terror is no different. Thus the Leftist sees the hundred thousand Christians killed by the PLO in Lebanon , the myriad victims of the 1979 Islamist revolution of 1979 which killed 20 000 people in the first two weeks, Israeli women and children butchered by Arab terrorist groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, the PLO, and the Popular Resistance Committees, and the victims of the 911 terrorist destruction of the Al Qaeda world trade towers as either deserving of their fate or expendable. Thus you have the likes of Ward Churchill blessing the 911 terror attacks and describing the victims as 'little Eichmann''s , the loathsome Chomsky saying after 911 that America had got what it deserved and Michael Moore describing Al Qaeda terrorists in Iraq who have killed thousands of Iraqi women and children on April 14, 2004 thus: 'The Iraqis who have risen up against the occupation are not 'insurgents' or 'terrorists' or 'the enemy'. They are the REVOLUTION, the Minutemen, and their numbers will go and they will win!" Chomsky paid a pilgrimage to the mass murderous Hezbollah in May 2006, in a long tradition of pilgrimages to bloodthirsty tyrannies, such as Red China under Mao, North Vietnam and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Meeting with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah Chomsky echoed Nasrallah's view that President bush was the 'top terrorist' and called the United States 'one of the leading terrorist nations'. Not to mention the passionate declarations of support for Hamas and Hezbollah of Chomsky's despicable disciple Norman Finkelstein and his various visits to these outfits of murder and Arab equivalents of the Nazi Party. when Jimmy Carter met with the Islamo-Nazi Hamas and embraced their leaders, he was fulfilling the long tradition of the Left's romance with America's totalitarian adversaries. All indication are the USA's pro-Islamist and radical left President Obama is following in exactly the same path, which is frightening and depressing.
The author dissects the hypocrisy and evil of the left's lust fopr death and destruction. A striking example of this is the venomous hatred of Leftist homosexuals for Israel despite the fact that the only nation in the Middle East where Homosexuals are NOT persecuted is Israel, and despite the fact that the regimes and terrorist gangs such as the Mullahs in Iran, the Syrian Baathist regime, Hamas and Hezbollah all persecute and murder Homsexuals in areas under their control.
Similarly their are Western (often Jewish born) feminists, such as Naomi Klein and Andrea Dworkin who who are viciously anti-Israel and anti-West and engage in some of the most hideous apologetics for Islamic atrocties against and opression of women. Part of this stems from their hatred of feminine sexuality and therefore approval of the Islamists brutal supression of this, regardless of the suffering of the Muslim women involved.
Of course another unifying between Islamo-Fascists and the Radical Left is the hatred of Israel and mainstream Jewry, largely because of the individual freedom and value of human life which Israel and Judaism affirms. During the ruthless 'Al Aqsa Intifada' or 5 year terror war waged from 2000 against the Israeli people by a collective of Palestinian terror networks including Hamas, Hezbollah, the PFLP, the PRC, Tanzim and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the international Left became more and more enamoured of Palestinian terror and hateful of Israel in the greater the carnage carried out by the terrorists against Israeli men, women and children.
This is part of the pattern of the last century in which Leftist support for tyrannical regimes - such as Communist Russia, Mao's China, Castro's Cuba, Ho Chi Minh's Vietnam, Khmer Rouge, Sandinista Nicaragua and Islamist Iran have always been greatest when the carnage and terror carried out by these regimes has been at their peak. Regarding Israel the fact that the Israeli people are seen as insufficiently egalitarian means that in the eyes of the by the International Left the Israeli people must die en masse as would happen if ever Israel was erased.Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's vows to 'Wipe Israel off the map' established great popularity for him on the international Left, and he was welcomed to American university campuses in the wake of these threats. Tragically others have to pay for the psychological need of the radical Left to purify an imperfect Earth with blood and fire.

The most ambitious chapter in this book is #2 where Glazov attempts to explain why the Leftist is the way he is. And his argument rests on these pillars: the believer is alienated from his society, he fantasizes about creating a perfect society in its place, he lacks meaning in life that frustrates him from establishing real and lasting interpersonal relationships, and he rejects the basic reality of the human condition that human beings are flawed and selfish.
He writes "The believer...is completely uninterested in the terrifying ramifications of his pernicious ideas. Preoccupied only with alleviating is own personal pain, he is indifferent to what effect the totalitarian experiments actually have. That is why the Left never looks back." While some of this diagnosis seemed too therapeutic to my liking it did begin to make sense as he showed case after case of the Leftist ignoring his own stated values when admiring the totalitarian utopias abroad.
You have artists like Shirley MacLaine admiring Maoist culture that destroyed the individual and instead demanded that art and literature serve the revolution. Writing about her trip she wondered, "Would there even be an art and literature later on? And would anyone miss it?" Or take Michel Foucault who was an enthusiastic admirer of the Ayatollah Khomeini's Iranian Revolution, a death cult that murdered homosexuals like himself. Lastly, look at Noam Chomsky, who has embodied what Glazov calls the "denial/excuse justifications" of any number of atrocities. And as we see with the previous examples, Chomsky denies who he is (a Jew) by ardently supporting people who would kill him if they got the chance.
It is a thought provoking book and a nice companion volume to David Horowitz's Unholy Alliance.
I didn't need a book to tell me that the American Left is essentially a death cult--their embrace of abortion and euthanasia, and apparent eagerness to destroy Judeo-Christian capitalist culture, already convinced me of that long ago. But this well-researched and persuasively written volume by PhD historian Jamie Glazov looks more deeply into the psychology of _why_ leftists so hate the culture and nations that give them freedom and opportunity, and instead flock to support the bloodiest regimes and ideologies--particularly communism and, in more recent days, Islamism. He discusses the apparent contradiction of intellectuals, homosexuals, feminists and others supporting movements that, were they successful, would put them at the forefront of those to be arrested, tortured, and executed.
As I mentioned, the book is scholarly and well-documented. It is written in as dispassionate and clinical a voice as is possible when dealing with matters of ideology, and only very rarely resorts to be what could be considered as colorful or intemperate language, as befits a respected foreign policy analyst like Glazov. The chapters are short and easily read, and they are ordered and woven together so as to create a comprehensive picture from a number of different and fascinating threads.
Fascinating theories on why those on the far left think and behave the way they do. The ideas ring true and make sense, even when applied to more moderate progressives. A worthy read for those of all political stripes.
Unable to find meaning in life, many of the ‘Left’ find meaning in death. They strive to fill the void in their life with causes. Since our society no longer needs to struggle for food each day, they are a ‘lost’ group, finding a new purpose to live for. We are no longer taught to live our life for God, to mimic Jesus in out actions, to practice self-denial or to put the needs of other first. As our society slowly eases restrictions on deviant behaviors more will need to find fulfillment by dying for a cause that counters our culture. The success of our culture may also be its demise.
From amazon.com United in Hate analyzes the Left's contemporary romance with militant Islam as a continuation of the Left's love affair with communist totalitarianism in the twentieth century. Just as the Left was drawn to the communist killing machines of Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and Castro, so too it is now attracted to radical Islam. Both the radical Left and radical Islam possess a profound hatred for Western culture, for a capitalist economic structure that recognizes individual achievement and for the Judeo-Christian heritage of the United States. Both seek to establish a new world order: leftists in the form of a classless communist society and Islamists in the form of a caliphate ruled by Sharia law. To achieve these goals, both are willing to wipe the slate clean by means of limitless carnage, with the ultimate goal of erecting their utopia upon the ruins of the system they have destroyed.
Why hasn't more folks read this book? It's sure to open the eyes of those liberal's in Washington.
This is one book I recommend for all of humanity to read. Highly informative and to the point. American will only survive if it learns the lessons of this book.
It's been a few years since I read this, after a friend insisted. I remember I found it pretty off: Where I think other critics of the political Left, like Nick Cohen or Christopher Hitchens, know their subject, I get the impression that Glazov doesn't really know the Left very well. He makes no difference between, say, the large European social democratic parties and feverish Maoists, which makes the whole book a bit difficult to take seriously. Still, there is no denying that you'll find a lot of apologetic attitudes to the worst of dictatorships on the political Left. But I don't think that Glazov's book provides the best analysis and reasons why. In short, confirmation bias and logical fallacies are not limited to the Left, or to whoever may be one's political opponents, and Glazov makes a good example of it, however probably not the way it was intended.
One of Aesop's fables concerns a farmer who found a half frozen viper. Taking pity on the venomous serpent he placed it inside his jacket to warm it. Upon reviving, the viper bit the farmer, mortally wounding him. This is exactly the position that modern liberals put themselves in in embracing ideologies whose adherents would just as soon kill them if they ever had the liberals in their power. This has happened not once, but twice, first with militant Communism, and now again with militant Islam, two of the deadliest ideologies to haunt our world. Mr Glazov does an excellent job in cataloging how the left, while despising the freedom that they are given as a birthright, go clamoring after whatever despot seems most likely to enslave their homeland. The index is as valuable as the book itself.
Finally a physiological account for the progressive phenomenon (rather than just ideological analysis). Very deep and very, maybe too detailed. A must book for understanding where the Western elites are pushing, hopefully, unsuccessfully. Look for more detailed reviews of this book. It deserves it.
United in Hate is an interesting concept of a literary work. While I agree with most of the messages and point that Glazov presents, there are many hypotheticals portrayed in the book that are not supported by fact but are portrayed to be true. Again, an interesting read, but one must take it with a grain of salt.
Repetitive, but prescient. In 2009 the author predicted and explained the reaction of the Left to the sadistic crimes of Oct. 7th. Relies heavily on the accounts found in Paul Hollander’s much better “Political Pilgrims”, a must-read for understanding the traditions of the Western Left.
Do you ever read one of those books in a subject you have thought about, but know that you don't know a lot about the details of this subject? That was what this book was to me.
So I hear a lot about how socialist and communists lead to governments of death and destruction. Specific people who took over their socialist government, turn them quickly communist then BAM he is the leader for a long and destructive period of time with often millions of people getting murdered. But I never knew much about the details. Who are these people? Who really follows and believes these people? What kind of sick dumb person would do that? Well, now I know.
One thing that I really liked about this book is that it does go into some details about Stalin, Castro and Mao's destruction. Not enough details to call me well rounded on these topics, but enough that it helps the book and also enough that you see that these people were not good at all yet had such of following of Americans who loved them.
United to Hate is a great start to figure out our modern progressive left and what their love of "tyranny and terror" could bring to us all.
