This was such a great middle grade novel. As a huge fan of Jules Verne's classic work, am I excited to find a new novel to help excite a new generation about this iconic author.

To be clear this is not a retelling but rather a story inspired by the author's work. This is a great adventure story in vein of the imagined adventures of Verne. I also loved that the book is set in Paris, bringing in those cultural elements.

As an adult reader, I was pleasantly surprised at how engaging this middle grade novel was to read. The story was fun with plenty of surprises. I would highly recommend this one to young readers. I'd be thrilled to gift this to a young person in my life.

Disclaimer I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

I never envisioned The Jules Verne Prophecy being a roller-coaster ride of a novel, but it sure is! It gives off National Treasure vibes, but it’s better than the movie.

Thirteen-year-old American Owen Godfrey finds himself in Paris for the summer and enrolled in a symposium to improve his French and his knowledge of Jules Verne. Through a series of misadventures, he and two new French friends — Nas Shirvani and Rose Bordage — find themselves in a race for treasure set in motion by the father of science fiction himself, Jules Verne. A wonderful, wonderful read for adventure lovers of any age. If you loved Jules Verne as a child, you’ll love this book. If you loathed Verne but love swift-paced heist novels, you’ll still adore this book. Highly, highly recommended.

Lastly, I didn’t see this coming, either: But, lucky us! This book is the first in a series, although I didn’t find that out until the very last page. Great work, Larry Schwarz and Iva-Marie Palmer! One more twist at the very end.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley; Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and Christy Ottaviano Books in exchange for an honest review.

Owen has to take a class on Jules Verne while he is in Paris in the summer to make up for a terrible grade he made during the regular school year. In the class he makes two new friends and, when he happens upon an old book by Verne, together the three set off on a mystery that will take them around Paris and back to the future.

How could I resist a kids' mystery set in Paris, with a plot including lines from classic Jules Verne stories and with Owen and his friends as interesting contemporary characters? I wonder who else might like to read this book.

This was a fun and fast paced read with short chapters, perfect for middle grade readers. If you’re interested in Paris or want to learn some French, this book has all of that and more! I enjoyed the mystery surrounding this unusual book Owen and his friends stumbled upon. I don’t know much about Jules Verne, but this book made me want to check out some of his work! My favorite part of the book was when they visited the Catacombs though, as I have always wanted to go there. Maybe someday! I can’t wait to see what happens next on Owen’s adventure!

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A ten year old kid moves to France and goes to a Jules Verne themed summer school. Needing a book to take a test, one falls on top of his head. It's not the book he wants, but it is the book that takes him on an adventure.

He and his friends search for clues in notable Paris locations. A shadowy group tries to stop them.

The kid is a little whiney, but this is still the best kids' book I've read this year.

This is a summarised version of my post on the top five reasons to read The Jules Verne Prophecy I wrote for the blog tour: https://anitaloughrey.blog/2023/07/01...

This novel captures the atmosphere and the intrepid adventurers, Owen Godfrey, Nas Shirvani and Rose Bordage are propelled into a vast array of incredible iconic attractions that the reader is instantly able to visualise, even if they have never visited Paris before. I enjoyed discovering the historical significance to Jules Verne these landmarks have.
The title drew me to the book instantly. I was not disappointed. There are many instances where the characters discuss Jules Verne’s novels in relation to the next step of their adventure. I particularly liked the way little facts were weaved into the plot. Yet, at no point do you feel the authors are overloading you with scientific jargon or facts. The Jules Verne Prophecy is pitched perfectly to maintain the attentions of a middle grade reader.
It was great that there were actual proper clues to decipher, which the authors give time for the reader to try and solve for themselves rather than, as other books. We get to read the clue for ourselves and think about it and witness the step-by-step way our heroes solve the puzzle, thus challenging the reader to think and use their creativity to solve the mystery.
I also enjoyed the way each bit of treasure they found was significant in helping them to solve the next step of their treasure hunt. All the way through we want to discover the answers to our questions of what the treasure will be and how will it lead them to their next destination. The characters are constantly placed in situations where they have to work hard to solve each clue and their struggle increases in difficulty as the story progresses.
The Jules Verne Prophecy is plotted so the tension rises and falls but still gives sufficient time for the reader to breath during this roller-coaster of an adventure. But the thing that stood out most for me and why it has made my number one spot in my list of my five top reasons to read The Jules Verne Prophecy is the voice. This novel is filled with the voice of Owen Godfrey.
From the very first page the authors have captured Owen’s personality and American colloquialisms and this is maintained throughout the novel. I found him to be a relatable and dynamic protagonist with clear goals and flaws, who reacts to the situations he finds himself in organically. Every character in the story has their own voice so they are easily identifiable not only by what they say but also how they react.
I would recommend this book to middle-school history and sci-fi enthusiasts.

National Treasure...but in Paris!

Do you love Jules Verne? I grew up reading tens of his books and The Jules Verne Prophecy made me want to re-read 20000 Leagues Under The Sea and Mysterious Island 💚 This book is non-stop adventure, found family, Paris treasure hunt...and it is FUNNY!!! I have a million quotes saved, but most of them would be spoilers 🙈 so here are some from the beginning:

"I flipped open the lid and saw a pizza. But not a normal pizza. Not even a Hawaiian pizza. It was a snail pizza. Snails in their shells, on a pizza.
Did Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea want to torment me by showing up on my pizza?"

" I kick off into the street, a Peugeot driver leans on his horn and screeches to a stop in front of me. I jump from my board and it rolls under his front tires as he yells something at me—I don’t speak great French yet, but I know it’s not good. I hop on the hood of his car and back down—landing right on my board. Then he flips me off. I definitely know what that means. But, how could he be mad? That was awesome!"

"Here was a long, narrow tunnel, lined with bones. Imagine all the bones you can and then multiple those bones by a thousand. That many bones. A lot of them were skulls, which somehow seemed worse than basic leg and arm bones because you knew they were human bones.
Nas groaned. “Doesn’t it feel like some of them are watching us?”
“With what eyes?” Rose joked.
“You’re not helping.”

This was such a fun, exciting adventure. I loved how the unlikely friends went on a treasure hunt created by Jules Verne. There were various clues and objects scattered around Paris that the trio went in search of, followed by those that wanted the treasure for themselves. We got to visit a cemetery - underground no less - an old, musty bookshop (yes, please) and travel along the maze of streets in search of clues.

After reading this I went to my bookshelf to see what Jules Verne books I had to read. I would hope that kids reading this would do also look up Verne books to discover other great adventure stories.

This was ok, especially since not a lot of science fiction is being written for youth. But I resent books rather ending on cliffhangers, even if it sets up the next book in the series. An American kid is dragged off to Paris while his mom teaches a seminar there. He gets enrolled in a Jules Verne seminar and makes a couple of friends. Everything goes wrong, including the professor being kidnapped and the three kids get involved in a madcap frantic hunt for the prize of a Jules Verne prophecy. I might read the sequel. The kids are nice.

On a ensuite Rose.

Owen's mom is a visiting physicist at a Parisian University for the summer, which means he's in Paris for the summer too. Thanks to an issue with his final paper in English, he's being enrolled at a summer school course in Paris on Jules Verne. It could be worse, at least Verne's scifi is pretty cool. But then Owen loses his copy of 20,000 Leagues under the Sea necessary for the first open book exam when his backpack is stolen, and the replacement Verne book that literally falls into his hands at the used book store turns out to not be helpful. Or at least, it doesn't seem so at first. His teacher confiscates it, and then Owen witnesses him hiding it in a secret compartment right before someone kidnaps him. Soon Owen and two classmates from summer school, Rose and Nas, are following clues from the book all over Paris in search of a possible treasure Verne left behind. And the stakes are raised when they start getting chased and more people are kidnapped.

This book simultaneously geeks out over Jules Verne's works and leads readers on a tour of Paris that survived since Verne's time. Owen, Nas, and Rose are unlikely friends. They don't hit it off right away, but bond over time and through adventures. They are a nice international and socioeconomic mix, though, and learn a lot from each other. Owen is middle class white American. Nas's family is from Libya and appears to have immigrated to France so they are a bit poorer. Rose is a bit of a poor little rich girl. Her French family is quite well off, but her parents are divorced and her older brother is famous in sports circles and they don't have much time for her. But her wealth does come in handy for their adventures. Owen also feels lonely much of the time as his mom is so busy with her work, so he and Rose have that in common. There's a bit of a twist in the ending which made me realize that if you flip Owen's name backwards and upside down it spells something very Verne-ish, and there's a bit of mystery left open about who his dad is. Most of this adventure feels realistic, but the ending takes a slight scifi twist. Still plausible, but unlikely. I had a hard time getting into this book. I didn't really like Owen at first. He is lonely and feeling sorry for himself and not very likable, but he grows on you as you get to know him more. We'll see how this does with the students to see if I get the 2nd book when it comes out.

Notes on content:
Language: None. (It is mentioned some characters swear but not what is said.)
Sexual content: None
Violence: There are some chase scenes and violence threatened. One person gets a twisted ankle, an explosion gives someone burns, and the kids are in danger from falling and drowning at some points. Everyone makes it out mostly ok though.
Ethnic diversity: The main characters are white American, white French, and Black Libyan French. Side characters are mostly French.
LGBTQ+ content: None specified
Other: Busy parents neglecting kids.

Dive into this page-turner middle grade book. You won’t be able to put down The Jules Verne Prophecy.

Who doesn’t love an adventure? Well, this book has plenty of adventure to go around. I found myself furiously turning the pages to see what would happen next. I love treasure hunt style books, you can’t help but get sucked in and this is a good one. Lots of clues to solve to get to the next one and the added pressure of working against the bad guys to get there first. This book is nothing but fun from start to finish.

The Jules Verne theme made it extra fun and super nostalgic for those of us that have read any of his classic works. There are wonderful references to several of his books and the kids need to use their knowledge of Jules Verne to solve several clues. I also found myself learning a couple of things about Jules Verne in the process.

The story is told from Owen’s perspective with each chapter being marked with a date so we can follow along. I loved all the characters in this book. Owen, Nas and Rose are all great. Owen is the skateboarding new kid with a great sense of humour. Nas is the scaredy cat, sweet kid. Rose is the bold and brave rich kid. They may be an unlikely trio, but I liked how well they worked together and complemented each other. Bonus points for Nas’ family. I just loved his mom.

The authors have done a great job of capturing Paris. From the catacombs to le Musee des Arts et Metiers to Le Dome, each chapter gives us vivid descriptions of the places that make Paris one of the greatest cities in the world. You’ll be able to picture each location clearly, as if being there yourself.

If you have an adventure lover in your life, they’ll enjoy The Jules Verne Prophecy.

Larry Schwarz and Iva-Marie Palmer deliver a fun-for-all-ages adventure story with “The Jules Verne Prophecy.”

When Owen travels to Paris with his mother for the summer, she enrolls him in a special seminar about Jules Verne, an author way ahead of his time. When his backpack with his Verne book in it is stolen, Owen joins forces with his new friends Nas and Rose to find the kid who stole it. Without it, he can’t take his next exam and will probably fail the course.

What follows is an incredible adventure featuring a special Verne book bought to replace his stolen school book, kidnappings, chases, treasure hunts and near death experiences.

The authors have joined forces to creates a truly delightful story with fun characters and twists and turns that will appeal to fans of series like James Patterson’s Treasure Hunters, as well as adult series like Clive Cussler’s Fargo series.

They also fill “The Jules Verne Prophecy,” which is due out June 27, with several great themes, like the importance of teamwork; having courage even during the scariest moments; overcoming self-doubt; not taking true friendship for granted; and the power of inventing stories.

I’m looking forward to this dynamic trio’s next adventure!

Five stars out of five.

An exciting adventure story that will grab the attention and imagination of even reluctant young readers!

The Jules Verne Prophecy by writing partners Larry Schwarz and Iva-Marie Palmer is an exciting adventure story that will grab the attention and imagination of even reluctant young readers. The pace is brisk, and the action is non-stop as the three main characters – Owen Godrey, Rose Bordage, and Nasim Shirvani – work out the meanings behind the clues and travel around “The City of Lights.” Owen has a crush on Rose, and their initial meeting is laugh-out-loud funny. The three friends learn many things, including first impressions and assumptions are not always accurate.

Their race across Paris ahead of the bad guys is riveting and creative in its execution, and their discoveries live up to the reputation of Jules Verne. A couple of loose ends are left hanging when the story closes, providing a great jumping-off point for a sequel. I’ll be looking forward to more adventures with these characters with anticipation.

I recommend THE JULES VERNE PROPHECY to middle-grade readers and for reading aloud at school, after-school programs, and at home with the entire family.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from the author or publisher through TBR and Beyond Book Tours.

What a great adventure tale! Filled to the brim with actions and suspense and peril.

Owen and his friends Nas and Rose are whisked all around Paris after stumbling upon a mysterious book of prophecies from Jules Verne. They try to solve the riddles within to find the treasure alluded to but have company along their journey and have to outrun and outwit them.

The story takes us to many interesting locations around the city of Paris and it feels like you are getting a bit of a tour. I spent some time googling the places as well and found it interesting. Would be a good book to use in school for the tie ins. I definitely learned some interesting things while reading that I hadn’t known before.

It is also a great introduction to the classic works of Jules Verne and his almost prophetic ideas in his books about technology that he shouldn’t have been able to predict. It might encourage some readers to check him out after for sure.

A great sense of adventure and an almost Goonies like vibe as the solve mysterious riddles to find a treasure long hidden will entice any reader to join Owen, Nas, and Rose on this quest and from the cliffhanger ending it seems we aren’t quite done. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Owen is NOT thrilled to be dragged to Paris for the summer when his professor mom takes a lecturing fellowship. And even more, he is not thrilled she has signed him up for a Jules Verne seminar! After his backpack gets stolen, Owen and two classmates, Nas and Rose, chase down the thief only to wind up in an alley with an ugly bookstore and no backpack, Owen needs that backpack for the test today or he's in trouble. When Rose suggests he fins another copy of the book they've been reading, Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seam Owen agrees. What they find instead is a strange old books, The Prophecy of Jules Verne, and with that discovery comes a whole heap of adventure and trouble! Fast-paced and suspenseful, this is a great romp through Paris to find Jules Verne's treasure, left behind in 1905!

Owen Godfrey's summer is starting out poorly. When his scientist mother accepts a position in Paris, he is not thrilled. Even worse he has been put in summer school studying the writer Jules Verne when some kid steals his book, making him late for and flunking a test. His new friends help him buy an old dusty book which is a collection of Verne's stories BUT there is more - hidden codes, a kidnapped professor, secret passages. Now life is more interesting as he and his friends try to sort out the clues: a trip to a Catacombs, a ride in a hot air balloon, crashing into the Eiffel Tower, nearly drowning in the Seine. Life moves at breakneck speed with dangers lurking. Along the way both Owen and the readers learn more about Verne, his futuristic inventions, and Paris. Good thing this is just Book 1 of an intriguing series.

This book was just a delight and very hard to put down! Owen was very likeable as a skateboard enthusiast and little bit madcap. His friend Ras was more quiet, and I wished his personality would've come out more rather than just having different opinions than Owen. Rose was great. I always like seeing the popular, preppy girl have some heart and brains. And then there were all the nods to Jules Verne, the non-stop action, and the setting of Paris. It was a little hard to believe that kids could wander Paris on their own like that. And some of the parents were absent to the point of neglect at times, but otherwise this was a really fun read. If you like Paris, Jules Verne, and puzzle mysteries, you will enjoy this one!

Like an Indiana Jones movie in book form for kids, Iva-Maria Palmer and Larry Schwarz's THE JULES VERNE PROPHECY is a travel, mystery, and history-filled adventure and a fantastic addition to any summer reading list.

American Owen Godfrey lands in a Jules Verne class in Paris for the summer and soon befriends two Parisian classmates, Nas and Rose. As events unfold, they traverse the city--from deep underground to high in the sky--deciphering coded clues tied to an Verne anthology. Short, action-packed chapters propel the story forward at a brisk pace, while the literary references add an especially unique element.

A charming, fun, and spirited read. Get me to Paris, ASAP.

Thank you to the authors and publisher for an ARC.

The Jules Verne Prophecy by Larry Schwarz & Iva Marie Palmer is a wonderful adventure fiction. I have read about Jules Verne and, it was only because of him I chose to review the book. The story jumps from one to another and, you will feel glued to the book. For our young readers, the book is going to excite them. All the adventure and excitement takes a leap toward the climax and the book comes to an amazing end. The characters are lovable and young readers can easily relate with them.

Definitely 4 stars for the book. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with an opportunity to read and review the book.

Very slow start, some readers will give up. Some of the action was so well described, while other scenes were confusing. The Jules Verne connections were interesting, but could be stronger as many young readers will not be at all familiar with his work. The three friends - Owen and his two Parisian classmates Rose and Nas - are good, well drawn characters, but the adults in the story were marginally characterized, very stereotyped. The vignettes of Paris were interesting and I wished that I had discovered the city map (at the end) earlier to follow the action. I didn't care for the illustrations because the kids always look angry. I skimmed the final chapters to get to the end and on to something more interesting.

Thank you @tbrbeyondtours and @christyottavianobooks for having my kids and I on this booktour. My son loves this fantastical and sleuthing book! To his review.

I really like this book because Owen is so fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Paris to seek his adventures. The story is fast paced and I like it because it has given me the time to guess the every steps of the way. I am so happy to have guessed the ending and while figuring out I find the scientific plot more interesting. This is perfect for summer read and in fact all year round too.

This book reminded me of a Dan Brown book but for kids. I never really thought about the Science Fiction author, Jules Verne, writing so long ago about things that didn't exist in his time but many things do now exist. Did he dream up all these inventions? Was he a prophet? Did his stories inspire the inventions themselves? Or did he time travel?
The ending of the Epilogue gave me chills...I know this is fiction but I LOVE what it implies the truth it plus it leaves the reader wanting more...to be continued

I definitely want to know what will happen in a new book! Who exactly pushed the old Jules Verne book on Owen's head anyways? Or was it just a coincident?
Characters:
Owen (American, mother working in Paris for the summer, he is taking a class on Jules Verne's literature)
Rose (French, rich, also in class, friend)
Nas (French, friend, also skateboards and in class)
Professor Bessier (teacher)
Chantal LaForge (curates Rose's Dad's collections and works with Bessier at school)
Thief (boy steals backpack while at skatepark and later seen and chased to old book store)

I liked the adventure in the book. I liked the location, Paris. I didn't really enjoy the characters in the book though. It was a good book, but the children were just a bit winey at times. I wish the author had made the children more relatable. If your child is into adventure movies though I would definitely have them read this book!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the temporary digital ARC that I read and gave my honest opinion of.
