One Liner: Informative, concise, and has some great illustrations
Learning tarot is fun but also scary and overwhelming. I started a few books but abandoned them due to different reasons. The cover of this book grabbed my interest, and the page count seemed reader-friendly (considering it includes an array of topics).
Tarot Magick provides an introduction to tarot readings, choosing a deck, caring for it, reading the cards, learning the spreads, and a handful of spells to try (at the end). This is a lot to digest, except that everything is brief, crisp, and to the point. Both upright and reversals are covered.
The focus of the interpretation is on the symbolism, which is something I’m still trying to work with. Though the book has cards designed by the author and illustrated by Viki Lester (find her on Instagram @forensicsandflowers), the author explains the symbolism of the standard RWS (Raider Waite Smith) deck. I read the interpretations while zooming in on the images I have with me. This helped me get a better idea of the details I missed until now.
The book has plenty of illustrations (all the major arcana are full-page illustrations) and is so, so lovely! The darkish color schemes bring out the necessary details. I love their vibe- powerful, confident, artsy, and magical.
To summarize, Tarot Magick is a vibrant and informative book that will help a tarot learner get more comfortable with the cards and their symbolism. I know I will continue to refer to this book for a long time.
Thank you, NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Leaping Hare Press, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
This is the best book on Tarot cards and their meanings I have ever read so far! The best one I read before was from the same publisher. This new book has levelled up my expectations now that I feel there will not be a better one than this. And if it happens too, I will be expecting the same from the same publisher as well!
The book explains well from where to start, how to choose a tarot card deck, how to interpret each card and how to explain the differences. The signs related to these cards are read and explained better. And yes, how we can do tarot reading for friends and family too!
The pages are eye popping good! Vibrant and satisfying enough to get more lost in the tarot world, I got the best out of this book. I feel any reader will get mesmerised once they open this book.
Experience it for yourself. Grab the book as soon as it comes out!
Thank you, Leaping Hare, for the advance reading copy.
Brilliant guidebook! I'm completely new to tarot and have found this book invaluable. I will definitely keep it close to hand as I keep learning. I loved the clear card descriptions, including reversals. The workings at the end are a nice touch. My only negative would be the pages for minor arcana cards don't contain an image of the card, so unless you're very familiar with your deck or have it, unshuffled, close to hand or have it laid out in your spread you may not be able to link the imagery to the description if you are reading it outside of your practice as I did. The book references imagery on the Witch of the Forest deck and the Rider-Waite-Smith deck so can be used with most decks I'd imagine. Fantastic introduction, very helpful for a novice!
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group-Leaping Hare Press for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I've been reading quite a few books on tarot lately, as a beginner, and this is hands down the best one I've encountered.
To start with, the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. Illustrations of all of the Major Arcana are included, and there is also artwork on just about every single page.
The author is clearly extensively knowledgeable about tarot cards and various other aspects of witchcraft, exploring how astrology and numerology factor into interpretation of the cards. She also explains different types of spreads in depth, as well as the meaning of each of the individual 78 cards in the deck and their reversed meanings as well. This makes the book a great starting text for beginners.
However, Squire also explores how to use the cards to answer yes or no questions, work them into spells, and most intriguingly, incorporate them into a regular journaling practice in order to learn more about ourselves, the cards, our emotions, and how to best interpret the cards, both for ourselves and others.
This is one of the rare few books that I'm planning to purchase as soon as I can, since I had far too many bookmarks, and will need to reference this one far too often to not have a physical copy on my shelf. Whether you're just a beginner like me, or already have some experience and are looking for novel ways to use the cards or gain a deeper understanding, this is the book for you.
I knew that this was a beginner book when I bought it. I have a couple of years of experience with the practice of tarot reading and find it hard to discover tarot-books for more advanced readers. Therefore, I thought I would give this book a go, just to have a little fresh-up of my knowledge. The book did what I expected it to do. It's a great read for beginners and touches on alot of the symbolism in the images of the different cards. I even learned a couple of new things from this book. So, even though it's definitely for beginners, I give this book a well deserved four stars!
There is a lot of good information in this book, but a lot of it you can search and find online these days. The section on using the cards for spellwork is small. I really wish there was more to it. I also think what would make the information on each card stand out more is if there was info of how each card could be used in a spell or what kind of spells/deities would work best in association with its imagery and meaning.
A beautiful witchy magical book on tarot perfect for beginners. I've been on my tarot journey for about 2 years and I am reading as many tarot books as I can. If this was the first tarot book I read on my journey I would have loved it. So many little bits of information all in one place. A great reference.
Tarot Magick stands out to me as a great read due to its simplicity and layout. I loved Chapter 2- Practical tarot. So many amazing info graphics to look back on and reference including colour theory, numerology, yes or no questions and the elements.
Including the fools journey in the Major Arcana chapter was a lovely addition that I have not seen in a tarot book yet. This is such a great tool to learn the meanings and help join the stories of each card together.
I really enjoyed the chapter on Tarot Spells and Rituals. I found this to be a unique practical addition to a tarot book. Making Tarot Magick more than just a tarot guide book giving the reader practical ways to use the cards in their magical practice. The practical information on caring, cleansing and energy related to your deck will be valuable to many readers especially those starting out on their tarot journey.
All the artwork and illustrations are beautiful providing a witchy magical vibe. I only got to read a digital copy of the book but I can image the physical copy to be a lovely book to read.
The only thing that let it down for me was the Minor Arcana chapter and the lack of illustrations of each card. I wanted to be able to see each card as I was reading about them. If you had the corresponding deck with you this would be no problem but I just wanted to see the illustrations in that section.
Overall a great introduction into tarot or a great refresh for any tarot reader.
Thank you Net Galley for providing me with an early copy of this book.
I am collecting this series of gorgeous books. Beautifully illustrated and easy to understand explanations. Good for beginners and lovely to dip into for those more advanced.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
(I'm in between 4 and 4.5 stars ^^; )
Going into this book, I knew it was going to lean spiritual, but the number of five star reviews had me curious, so I decided to take a dive--and I absolutely do not regret it! Even as a secular reader, I really enjoyed this book. The author did a fantastic job describing the cards and giving information about tarot. I think it's a very beginner friendly book, but also a book to check out just to see another reader's interpretations.
The book opens introducing tarot and some frequently asked questions, along with further information on choosing a deck, bonding and caring for it, how to start, various spiritual connections (astrology, colors, timing, planets, etc), numerology (useful for secular readers too, imo!), yes and no questions, and reversals. So definitely a lot to start with!
The majors all had an original card artwork along with the card explanations. The minors only had card explanations with one graphical art element, not a full card. Each card has its name, ruling planet(s), zodiac sign(s), element(s), yes or no, key words upright and reversed, along with more details on the upright and reversed meanings, often containing symbolism meanings. I really liked the author's interpretations of the cards, and appreciate that each had a couple options for meanings to try and be a catch-all. It was also nice to see the stereotypical 'doom and gloom' cards to have positive bits about them too.
After the card explanations is a section discussing advice on setting up for readings, a list of 3 and 4 card spreads (really liked these!), the celtic cross (which interestingly had a different position meanings than I'm used to), spells and rituals, and recommended reading.
I had a few nit-picks, however. But I wish the minors had accompanying card art, like the majors. (Without them, unless you know the RWS imagery, you'd either need a deck to use with the book or search up the cards online. Not difficult to do, but a little annoying.) In the 'rituals' section, several minors had card art shown, so I'm not sure why they weren't included with the minors. I also thought it was random and strange for some pages/cards to have a white background and others black. It didn't seem to serve a purpose and was just a little jarring when the colors inverted while I read. And some of the colored background pages' text was hard to read, just not enough contrast between the text color and the background color. And for the 'yes or no' interpretations for the cards, well over half of them were a 'yes', which feels unbalanced to me. I don't really do yes/no personally, but mentioning for those who do.
For secular readers like myself, you won't be using /all/ the information in this book, but I do think this one is worth looking at. You can totally read this from a secular perspective and be just fine. The explanations are easy to wrap your head around and I think the author did a great job getting all the information across. Definitely a book I wish I had had starting out.

Tarot Magick is the fourth and final instalment in ‘The Witch of the Forest’s Guide to..’ series and it delves into the powerful world of tarot. Tarot cards are rich with meaning, symbolism and secrets waiting to reveal themselves and this is the perfect beginner guide for the new tarot reader or even those more well versed in the cards. With breath-taking illustrations from Lindsay Squire’s on Tarot Magick deck, illustrated by Viki Lester and brimming with easy to follow and learn explanations of the meanings and symbolism behind the famous cards this book is bound to improve your practice.
I have to say the first thing that struck me about this book, and the previous three, is the ease to follow it. The writing is informative and detailed but with such a tone and flow that you can easily follow along and learn as you go. Even if you have other books or are well versed in tarot this book is a true gem with beautiful illustrations and easy to follow and break down information. It not only includes detail on how to interpret all 78 cards in a modern tarot deck while understanding the major and minor arcana cards but also the differences between the pentacle, wand, sword or cup card. It further delves into the elements associated with the cards, zodiac signs and plants as well that may tie to the card and its meaning as so much more.
On top of this we have rituals, tip and tricks and recipes taken directly from The Witch of The Forest’s personal grimoire. Aiding in how to use the cards as part of spells, to understand yourself and improve your self-love practice. I am somewhat biased since I have adored Squire’s other books; Natural Magick, Earth Magick and Astrology Magick but this book, despite knowing a little about Tarot, is honestly brimming with knowledge and ways to help improve your use of the cards. A brilliant reference book to have on hand and one I would highly recommend.
The book covers various aspects of tarot, from interpreting all 78 cards in the modern tarot deck to understanding the difference between Major and Minor Arcana cards, as well as the significance of elements, zodiac signs, and planets in astrology associated with each card. The author also provides tips and tricks for practicing tarot, including how to do a tarot spread and give yourself a tarot reading.
One of the unique features of this book is the inclusion of recipes, rituals, and tips and tricks from The Witch of the Forest's personal grimoire, which adds a practical and magical aspect to the tarot practice. The author also emphasizes the importance of intuition and building a personal connection with the tarot deck, which resonates with many readers.
The illustrations and design of the book are highly praised by reviewers, with many mentioning the vibrant and eye-catching pages that draw them into the world of tarot. The book is also described as easy to follow, making it accessible for beginners to intermediate readers.
Overall, reviewers highly recommend Tarot Magick as a comprehensive and well-organized guide to tarot, with beautiful illustrations and practical tips for incorporating tarot into one's magical and wellness practice. Whether you're new to tarot or an experienced reader, this book is praised for its valuable insights and engaging presentation of tarot magick.
This is a beautifully illustrated book that covers everything you need to know about learning the tarot. I particularly loved the very informative section on tarot journaling - I haven’t come across this in other tarot books I have read.
For each major arcana card we are given very a useful list of keywords for both upright and reversed positions, then a more in-depth look at each position. I also liked the little piece that told the story of each card through the lens of the Fool’s journey, something else I’ve not seen before. Each major card is printed as a full page in the book.
For the minor arcana each card is described but not shown; it would have been nice to have a visual reference. Again, there is an explanation of both upright and reversed meanings and it is very easy to read and understand. Some tarot books contain reams and reams about each card but this was short and succinct, yet very informative.
In addition to the cards themselves, the book also includes tarot spreads, and also tarot spells and rituals which I really enjoyed reading about and is yet something else I have not encountered in other tarot books. This is an incredibly good book, packed full of info and accompanied by gorgeous illustrations. I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to learn about the tarot.
With thanks to Netgalley and Leaping Hare Press for this advance review copy. All opinions are my own.
Tarot Magick: Discover yourself through tarot by Lindsay Squire is a beginner’s guide to the world of Tarot. The book is illustrated by Viki Lester of Forensics and Flowers, featuring stunning illustrations from The Witch of the Forest’s own Tarot Magick deck.
What sets this book apart is its easy-to-learn information that explores the in-depth meanings and symbolism of every card, helping readers develop their intuitive Tarot skills. Furthermore, it offers insights into tarot magick and how it can improve wellness practices through witchcraft.
As I read this book, I found myself completely immersed in the stunning illustrations that make it a visual party for the eyes. In addition, I appreciated how well laid out the book is, which makes it easy for Tarot users of all levels to follow along. One section that stood out was the “spell” section that offered practical applications for using tarot cards in spellwork.
Overall, I would highly recommend Tarot Magick: Discover yourself through tarot by Lindsay Squire to anyone interested in learning more about tarot. From its beautiful cover to its informative content and practical applications, this book is exceptional and truly a must-read for all those on a journey of self-discovery through Tarot.
Tarot is typically the first thing people think of when they hear about divination. This is also one of the most common forms that many people at least attempt to learn in the magical journey. For some, this is a very complex subject so books such as this one are very valuable.
To begin, the author discusses the myth of buying your own deck and how to choose and care for your tarot decks. I actually bought my own first deck and continue to buy my own. As far as cleansing the deck, there are many methods. I like to keep a piece or selenite with mine but I shuffle between readings and break the connection with an obsidian arrowhead.
Lindsay Squire is a very knowledgeable author and was able to not only explain each of the 78 tarot cards in an easy to understand manner, but they were able to add other layers of learning. What I mean by this is that Squire also discussed the hidden symbols and associations such as colors, numerology, zodiacs, etc. Many feel that each tarot card has one meaning and that is it. In reality, there are many many layers to a tarot card and various things such as the numerology that add another layer of meaning to the message being read.
This is a gorgeous book for beginners. I love Viki Lester's illustrations, they pair perfectly with Lindsay Squire's knowledge and tips. My only issue is that a lot of the chapter pages are hard to read. A lot of black font on dark colours (olive green, merlot, red) and it wasn't nice to my eyes.
The knowledge that Lindsay Squire shares though is amazing. She touches on some deeper correspondences and uses for the cards like numerology, astrology, and colour that I have never or rarely see in books like this. I love opening the door for more research, like leaving breadcrumbs for those who wish to go deeper when they're ready. It also allows the reader to focus on one section at a time, the book can grow with them.
I loved the spells she included in the back. I appreciate that she didn't shy away from reversals. She gives meaningful reasons as why they're important and does say it is personal choice in the end.
I actually enjoyed the flexible binding a lot more than I expected to. It was easy to hold and I hope it'll hold up to wear and tear for those who carry their books everywhere.
Totally recommend. Another great library find. I loved it!
[💌] incredible art & probably the best guide for beginners & intermediate practioners
Tarot Magick: Discover yourself through tarot. Learn about the magick behind the cards.
I think this is one of the best tarot guide’s I’ve read so far, amazing beautiful art between the pages of this book. Great information regarding the individual cards: the ruling planet, zodiac, element, detailed information on yes/no questions and the way the card is positioned and of course: the fools journey.
This book has learnt me more about tarot than the books i’ve read before, the book is based on the RWS deck but beautifully illustrated. The part about card spreads teached me a lot about magick and how to incorperate tarot cards into your practice
I don’t usually rate 5 stars to spirituality books however this was an exception and amazing help, if you happen to be able to get a copy, i would highly recommend this! the reading list for other books to help your practice was a nice touch!
thank you to netgalley for providing me with this free book, in exchange for an honest review
This is one of the best tarot books I have read. This was a beautifully illustrated and wonderfully organized book that breaks down a tarot deck and the many ways you can interpret the cards.
In this book, Squire provides information on the Major and Minor arcana by providing information about the ruling planet, zodiac signs, element, keywords for upright and reversals, and explain their meanings for both upright and reversals. Squire not only breaks down each card, but she also provides extremely helpful information about how to determine time with cards, numerology, answering Yes or No questions, the four elements, and planet correspondences.
Squire also provides ways to journal with your tarot and how to use tarot cards in your spellwork. I am very interested in applying tarot cards to spellwork now. Overall, this is an absolutely wonderful beginner tarot book and I highly recommend it, especially since it has wonderful illustrated quick reference pages with each section.
*ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*
An amazing guide accurately addressing any apprehension of newbie tarot users. It’s a clear cut and welcoming approach that simultaneously educates and relieves concerns. Emphasizing intuition and building that muscle always resonates with me. Plus I love the “Questions to ask your deck as a sweet way to familiarize yourself with your new cards — which is appealing as a practice for any new deck that shows up in your life. The daily draw, is another great tool for learning and connecting with your deck. Astrological tarot card associations introduce another fab way to draw connections. The meanings section-includes planets, zodiac, elements, and keywords, allowing for a multilevel degree of understanding. The tarot spell section is a fantastic addition to this tarot book.. Practice, just do it, and pull cards. ✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨
Get this book! Whether you are new to the work of Lindsay Squire, new to tarot, or new to spiritual practice you will learn so much here. Fans of Lindsay Squire's work will want to immediately add this to their collection. I received a digital copy but will buy the physical copy ASAP to have a chance to view this amazing artwork in person. This book takes an easy to read and well organized approach to the craft of tarot. I've been studying for a couple of years and have read several books on tarot, but wish I could have started with this one. Broken down into easy to understand segments, this book taught me about things like how to interpret the numerology of tarot, and it gives great insight into in-depth areas like astrological correspondence for the cards. Gorgeous illustrations accompany the text, adding to the visual as well as informational appeal of this book.
This is a wonderful overview of tarot! Although I have lightly read tarot for many years, I have zero of the cards mesmerized and didn't know much else besides the little that I did. This gives you so much good information! What the cards mean, different spreads, and understanding how one should read them, Also, I adore the whole look of the book, it is so pretty! I have read other books by this author and have liked all of them as she writes clearly, is concise, gives great information, and is a trusted source on these topics. If you're looking for more details on using tarot, this book is exactly what you need to help! I plan on buying a physical copy to have on hand as a reference as I continue to use my cards more mindfully. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking into using tarot cards.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC which was shared with me for my honest review.
Wait! Do I just love tarot books or have I been exceptionally lucky in the books I have chosen to pick up? Because this is yet another charming introduction to what I, admittedly, find to be a daunting subject. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the eARC.
Tarot Magick is both thorough and concise. I am very appreciative of the many illustrations throughout the book. Not only are they gorgeous to look at, but it really helped me to grasp the concepts under discussion. The information is presented in a compact and organized fashion. Yet it never reads as info-dumping or boring. There is a whimsy to the writing and artwork which keeps the reader engaged - I found reading the book to be a delightful experience. I particularly enjoyed the author's approach as a guide pointing out possibilities, inviting the reader to bring their own curiosity to the subject.
I am a complete beginner with tarot, and I was looking for a good book that would explain everything in a simple way. Learning about 78 cards is quite daunting, but Lindsay takes it step by step, first explaining how to choose a deck and care for it, then what the cards mean, also showing a few common spreads and spells. I love how she gives so many details about each of the major arcana cards, all the details and other symbols to look for.
I have bought all the previous books by Lindsay Squire, and already preordered this one. I highly recommend it to any tarot beginner, five stars!
Thank you to the publisher who provided me with an e-copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really like this book! It serves as a great resource for new tarot readers because it covers all the basics and provides answers to the general FAQs the majority of beginners have.
When I was new to tarot (a few years ago), I bought several beginner books but none of them contained any knowledge or suggestions on using tarot cards specifically for spells. THIS book DOES! The spells section is what makes this book more unique from other tarot resources.
I appreciate the list of recommended further reading at the end. I love it when authors suggest content other than their own and acknowledge that other authors can be good resources too.
Overall, this is a good book if you're just starting out with tarot and you're looking to learn the basics!
While a great introduction to Tarot I was disappointed by some formatting and editing errors. Some pages are nearly impossible to read due to the colour of the page vs the colour of the text. There are also instances of the exact same key word for a card being repeated within that card's description. And for some reason the illustration for The Star card shows the symbol for Pluto while the written description says it's associated with only Uranus.
Regardless - I would still recommend reading this book if you're new to tarot. For me, the best part of the book was the last chapter which has some really great tarot card spells. Most of the tarot card spells I've come across focus on just a single card, these however use multiple cards - which was nice to see.
Another great book from Lindsay Squire! This is a very useful guide, particularly for tarot beginners. It's organized well and offers information about each card and suit, with a summary of the keywords to remember for individual cards. Squire also gives advice about how to choose a tarot deck, goes over how to bring in related traditions (astrology and numerology, for example), provides suggestions for spreads, and offers some spells and rituals. I'm personally not a huge fan of the artwork (I like a looser, hand drawn look rather than precise vectors), but thankfully art is subjective. Overall, this is a good tarot reference book to keep on your shelf! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.
I love reading Tarot cards. I think I love to read books on tarot just as much. Every time I read a book on tarot I find myself learning something new. I love to read other peoples ideas on tarot. Lindsay Squire book, Tarot Magic, is a beautiful thought out book about tarot and magic with tarot. She adds basic ideas on the symbles, numerology as well as astrology. The picture of the taort deck she uses with the book are beautifull. I definitely want this book added to my tarot collection. #Tarot #TarotMagic #tarotbooks #LindsaySquire
Thank you to NetGalley, Lindsay Squire and Quarto Plublishing Group-Leaqping Hare, Leaping Hare Press for lending me the arc.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an early copy of this book.
This book is a great, quick tarot book that’s laid out in an easy-to-follow way.
As always, the work of Forensics and Flowers was stunning.
I love that there are mentions of symbolism and even how tarot works with timing, elements, and ruling planets. Because of this information, the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana entries have that information as well as upright and reversed meanings. The differences are that the Major Arcana has individual artwork for each card and how the Fool transforms on their journey whereas the Minor Arcana doesn’t have this (for good reason).
This book is a fantastic deep dive into tarot and other card based divination systems for a beginner. Although the knowledge in the book is fairly basic they’re still something for everyone. And things even the most adept tarot reader can try.
The illustrations are stunning and the illustrated pages give a quick visual recap of each section of the book The only negative id say is that the book is heavily based around the rws tarot deck and doesn’t really give any info on other decks such a Thoth or Lenormand.
I love the spell section as it shows readers another way that tarot can be utilised.
