In this perfect beach read, a recent divorcee and a woman independent to a fault form a spectacular bond as they move forward and help each other through love, loss, and big life changes—perfect for fans of Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery.
Dr. Becca Weiland had the perfect life—or so she thought, until she learned her husband cheated on her after a decade of marriage. With divorce papers signed, Becca throws her trademark caution to the wind and agrees to an impromptu monthlong vacation at a beach house with Sadie, a woman she's known all her life but really doesn't know at all.
Free-spirit Sadie Bloom is Becca’s opposite in every way, living in the moment and wasting zero energy on what comes next. But the pastry chef’s nothing-bothers-me exterior hides a fear she’s not ready to face—one that may jeopardize a future she never realized she wanted.
At first, Sadie’s go-big-or-go-home style bumps up against Becca’s perfectionism, but soon they’re bonding over too much Schnapps, a leaky roof, a bikini wax gone awry, and awkward meet-cutes with two of the hottest men in town. Best of all, in getting to know each other, they’ve gotten to know themselves, and together they find the courage to discover what it really means to live.
Cute, fast, easy but also with depth and heart that we expect from Amy Pine. This is the story of two women who aren't even friends who end up at a lakeside cottage together for a month long vacation. Their friendship, their relationships with others and the unexpected people they meet are so much fun and give all the warm fuzzies. The first book in this set is said to have Gilmore girls vibes (and it does) and this keeps us in that quirky fun space just like we want.
A quintessential beach read for lounging this summer!
Two mid 30 something yr olds take friendship to a new level when they (unwillingly) decide to share a beach house together for a month. This is a light, women’s fiction, no fuss read. The characters were a little blasé for me, but it was a quick read.
Thank you to the publisher for this gifted copy – out now!
Dr. Becca Weiland is newly divorced and accepts a month at a vacation rental that her sister Alissa is no longer able to use. Also going is Sadie Bloom who is a partner in Alissa’s bakery and is her ex sister in law. The two have know each other casually for years through Alissa but never spent real time together. They are opposites. Becca is controlled and disciplined and Sadie is the never married free spirit.
The two become friends as Sadie pokes and prods Becca to loosen her rigidness and Becca in returns appreciates Sadie’s depth, abilities and concerns. Along the way Sadie gets romantic sparks with lake neighbor Max, who is divorced and has a ten year old daughter. And Becca attracts the attention of hottie Leo who at 26 is ten years her junior.
My favorite scene is them sharing a Shabbat dinner with the guys, daughter and a lesbian couple they become friends with from town. It embraces relaxing and welcoming found family as part of their circle. The story itself is fine but the characters while likable are superficial. The main part of the story only covers a few weeks and the L word comes fast. There were a few jumpy spots too where I actually looked to see if I missed a page setting up the change of scene. Though each MC is has challenges this is more focused on drinking a lot of wine, small personal growth and opening themselves to love. It helps that they are on vacation and not dealing real world jobs and responsibilities.
This is a stand alone novel but the main characters are introduced in the authors debut novel, The Bloom Girls (Aug 2021). This is an easy summer/beach type read. Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the eARC via NetGalley and I am leaving a voluntary review.
This novel manages to balance some significant life-altering issues with light-hearted humor – perfect escapist reading.
Becca has a perfect life – a lawyer husband, two healthy children and a successful medical practice. It is only after she discovers her husband’s infidelity that she realizes the personal price she has paid for maintaining that façade of perfection.
Sadie, on the other hand, is a free spirit living in the moment with little regard for what others think of her lifestyle. All that shifts when she is informed a medical condition may drastically impact her future.
Becca and Sadie are coerced into taking over a vacation rental on Glass Lake for a month. Even though they have known each other since childhood, the two women have never connected due to their opposite temperaments. After some initial friction, they begin to bond and eventually share some misadventures, as well as a budding friendship. The story is further enhanced by the introduction of two men who challenge both women to move out of their respective comfort zones, an adorable, precocious ten-year-old with a penchant for collecting dollar bills, and an assortment of family and neighbors.
My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This review is being posted immediately to my GoodReads account and will be posted on Amazon upon publication.
Becca Weiland is a uptight doctor trying to please everyone. She finds out her husband is on a dating app. It's a year later and she needs to sign the divorce papers and her sister tells her to take a month off work and got to Glass Lake with Sadie Bloom. Sadie is a take it as it comes girl. Sadie's brother is with Becca's sister and they have known each other for years; but are not friends. They go to the lake together for a month; both learn alot about each other and meet new men. I loved the story of Becca cutting loose and Sadie taking things more seriously.
The Cottage on Glass Lake by Amy Pine was a cute summer read. Set in a gorgeous Wisconsin lake town I was drawn into this cure small town setting.
I liked that it was about starting over and loved seeing Becca and Sadie's friendship grow. It was fun to see Becca come out of her perfect self and thought both of the romances were fun.
If you're looking for a good contemporary romance that's perfect for reading lakeside check this out!
Amy Pine is a new to me author but The Cottage on Glass Lake has ensured that I'll be reading a lot more of her. Brimming with laugh-out-loud humor, poignant emotion, complicated relationships, self discovery, friendship, and starting over, it drew me in and flooded me with all the feels I want in a good summer read.
I love stories about friendship. Make that a "we've known each other our whole lives and used to be in-laws but our siblings divorced but now they're back together and we're sort of in-laws again but we've never really known each other but now we're forced to spend a month together in a lake cabin and we're total opposites" friendship and, oh yeah, I am so there. Add in two hot - but estranged - brothers, a hilariously precocious little girl, lively townies, too much wine, and, well, let's just say that prim and proper inhibitions may be tossed to the side. Skinny dipping, anyone?
The intriguing layers of both of these women kept them interesting and me invested in them from start to finish. I love how the author slowly peels away those layers to reveal the fears and vulnerabilities beneath, then slowly rebuilds them into stronger women with clearer vision of what is most important to them and what they're willing to fight for. And I love what each of the women teaches and learns from the other. I love the community they build within the beach town, the Friday night dinners that reflect their Jewish traditions. It's like watching a new tapestry slowly being woven together, stitch by stitch. And it's one that's woven with laughter, with heart, with newly-won confidence, and with love.
The focus of this book is most definitely on the journeys of Becca and Sadie but romance is not given short shrift. Both women embark upon unexpected relationships over the course of their vacation, relationships that surprise them, expand their horizons, open their hearts to new possibilities, and bring laughter, joy, and new love into their lives. And, yes, there are happy endings.
Also, if you're as intrigued by the off-again, on-again siblings' story as I am, it's told, along with their adult daughter's story, in The Bloom Girls, a book that's described as "Gilmore Girls meets My Big Fat Greek Wedding." I've already downloaded it and am eager to dive in!
4.5 Stars ARC received from publisher. Fair and unbiased review.
The Cottage at Glass Lake was the perfect way to spend an afternoon by the pool (or on the beach) enjoying your favorite beverage while being thoroughly immersed in the lives of two very different women who both are at a crossroads in their lives.
Becca Weiland had it all, or at least she thought she did until it is brought to her attention that her husband of over a decade has profiles on several dating apps. When her niece is unable to use a month long stay at a home, Becca agrees to take the time while her twins are at summer camp and with their father to get a bit of perspective and shake up her life. She isn’t sure about doing it with Sadie Bloom, her sister’s business partner who is her complete opposite, but as always Becca makes a plan to make the most of it. While Becca is button upped and loves her plans and lists, Sadie is the complete opposite taking each day as it comes something she learned to do early in life. Tensions run a bit high at first, but a night of shots and some strange mishaps with two local men; they find common ground and begin to see each other as a friend.
There were so many moments in the book that stand out including Becca seeing/meeting Leo for the first time and Sadie belly flopping across the deputy’s desk at the police station and Max witnessing the aftermath. I found it so interesting that Becca ending up spending time with Leo, a man 10 years her junior, and seeming to live a carefree lifestyle so unlike her. Leo seemed more Sadie’s type, but somehow Sadie was struck dumb, well maybe more struck awkward and clumsy, by Max, a single dad, who screams commitment. I loved the contrasts between these couples, but it was easy to see nothing would be easy for either one.
The fun and quirky secondary characters that drew both women into their circle and their found family were a delight especially the wise beyond her years and precocious, Evie, and her ever full swear jar. The Shabbat dinner scene was heartwarming and I felt it was a turning point for many characters in the story.
Once again I finished a book by Amy Pine and my heart is full. The Cottage on Glass Lake was a wonderful story filled with light, laughter, and a whole lot of love.
The Cottage on Glass Lake by Amy Pine is a charming and uplifting novel that delves into the importance of friendship, finding oneself, welcoming new opportunities, and balances significant life-altering issues with light-hearted humor. This is the story of two women who aren't even friends who end up at a lakeside cottage together for a month long vacation. Their friendship, their relationships with others and the unexpected people they meet are so much fun and give all the feelings.
The book is focused on two women taking a spontaneous month-long trip to a beach house that results in finding unexpected love. Dr. Becca Weiland is a recently divorced doctor with twin children, who attempt to learn to let go of her worries and embrace spontaneity. What ensues is Becca's journey of self-discovery: involving dealing with past hurts and insecurities to find her true self. Sadie, a single baker, is focused on the present instead of the future. During this time of transformation, Sadie faces her fears and explores her own desires and dreams. The small town the women are visiting brings unexpected love for each of them, a pair of brothers with their own personal issues, who challenge both women to move out of their respective comfort zones; and includes an adorable, precocious ten-year-old with a penchant for collecting dollar bills, and an assortment of family and neighbors.
A heartwarming summer read about romance, friendship, and personal growth; with lessons taught on family, friendship, self-appreciation, trust, and facing your demons no matter what they be. Basically, be your best self and live your best life. I highly recommend The Bloom Girls to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
#ad I received a gifted copy of this book and leave this review of my own accord. Many thanks to @aj_pine and @readforeverpub
This is a charming and uplifting novel that delves into the importance of friendship, finding oneself, and welcoming new opportunities. It is an ideal pick for readers who enjoy Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery, as it blends together romance, humor, and the journey of personal development. Dr. Becca Weiland takes a spontaneous month-long trip to a beach house with acquaintance Sadie, in an attempt to learn to let go of her worries and embrace spontaneity. What ensues is nothing short of grand.
One of the book's highlights is the character development, particularly Becca's journey of self-discovery and Sadie's transformative arc. Becca's relatable and inspiring journey involves dealing with past hurts and insecurities to find her true self, while Sadie faces her fears and explores her own desires and dreams. The heartwarming bond between these two women is beautifully portrayed.
The author has a captivating and fun writing style that perfectly captures the essence of a summer beach read. The witty dialogue, relatable characters, and humorous situations make for an enjoyable reading experience. The story's pacing is well-executed, blending introspective moments with entertaining and romantic encounters, while also exploring the importance of taking risks, embracing change, and finding the courage to pursue one's passions and desires, keeping us invested throughout.
A heartwarming summer read about romance, friendship, and personal growth. Relatable characters and a picturesque coastal setting make it perfect for the beach.
Becca, an obstetrician, and Sadie, owner of a bakery, were given the opportunity to stay together for a month in a cottage on Glass Lake. They had known each other for most of their lives, but never really clicked as friends. Rebecca had just divorced her cheating right swiping husband and Sadie was facing a potentially serious health condition. They both needed to get away to relax and gain some perspective on how to move forward in their lives.
At first, they were like oil and water, merely existing in the same cottage. In time, they started to have “friend dates,’ and slowly began to learn about each other. After several weeks of facing their challenges in life, they began to trust and even love each other like sisters. There was romance, challenges, and adventures where they often got themselves into to trouble. Add extended family, new friends, an ex-husband, and life, and you have an unforgettable beach read.
There were lessons taught on family, friendship, self-appreciation, trust, and facing your demons no matter what they be. To sum it up, be your best self and live your best life.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to readers of Women’s Fiction and anyone needing to take a break from life and learn how to breathe in your own skin.
I am grateful to Author Amy Pine, NetGalley, and Hachette Book Group for allowing me the opportunity to review this Advanced Reader’s Copy. This is a voluntary review, and all comments and opinions are entirely my own.
Dr. Becca Weiland thought her life was perfect that was until she found out her husband had been cheating on her. With her divorce papers signed, Becca decides to do something completely out of character for herself and goes on a month-long vacation with Sadie. Sadie Bloom is a free spirit who always lives in the moment. She might be the complete opposite of Becca, but soon enough, thanks to some schnapps, awkward moments with some really hot men, and other mishaps, these two women forge an unforgettable bond and learn what it really means to let go and live.
I absolutely adored this book. I thought Sadie and Becca were really relatable. Both of them were at two different points in their lives, yet desperately trying to figure out who they were and what they wanted out of life. I loved Sadie’s free spirit and how she challenged Becca to let go and not be so serious. I adored the awkward meet-cutes with brothers, Max and Leo. Max and Leo had their fair share of baggage to sort through and I really enjoyed their journey and the relationships they forged with Becca and Sadie.
Overall, I have to say, it was so wonderful to be back in the world of The Bloom Girls. The Cottage on Glass Lake is the perfect beach read with light drama, second chances, found family, and an exciting reverse age-gap romance. I was captivated from the very first page and I couldn’t help but devour this heartwarming story.
*I was provided an ARC copy of this book via Forever Romance and NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review*
Dr. Becca Weiland is at a loss when her marriage ends and she is trying to adjust to this new season of her life. She thought her life was perfect and she is about to face some new challenges, the biggest one being….who is Becca really? Sadie Bloom is a fun-loving, easy-going baker that takes life in stride. The only thing standing in her way is a dreaded doctor’s appointment that she is not ready to face. She is scared of what her future holds. Becca and Sadie have been acquaintances since they were teens, but far from being friends. They tolerate each other but when Becca and Sadie get thrown together for a month long stay at a cabin, they will soon discover that they can support, encourage and understand each other and develop a friendship they are both craving. They will not only develop new friendships but maybe also true love. Amy Pine not only gives her readers a friendship and romance novel, but also a story of self discovery. We have all been in a place when we didn’t know what our next step would be and this story is all about how to move forward. The story was witty, funny and heart warming. I loved the book and the writing style of Ms. Pine. When I read the synopsis for the book, I did read the first novel in the series first, The Bloom Girls and I found that although it can be a stand a lone novel, both major characters were introduced in the first novel. Thank you to Forever, Grand Central Publishing for my advanced copy which I read and reviewed voluntarily. I am excited to see what Amy Pine comes out with next.
I was totally hooked! Naturally, I couldn't wait to dive into more of the Bloom family's adventures, especially since it's been nearly two years since the last book came out. So, when I finally got my hands on this one, I was beyond excited.
Now, here's the thing: this new story has a different vibe altogether. It didn't quite give me that "Gilmore Girls" nostalgia that the previous book did. Nevertheless, it had its own unique charm that I couldn't help but enjoy.
The focal point of the book revolves around Becca and Sadie, two incredible characters who find themselves forced into a vacation at a cottage. The interesting part? They couldn't be more different. Becca, a divorced single parent, is grappling with the challenges of raising two children while running her medical practice. Sadie, on the other hand, is a free-spirited soul who has never settled down and loves living life on her own terms. Their interactions and contrasting personalities had me hooked from the start. I even found myself laughing out loud at times!
This installment was a tad spicier compared to the previous one, and it had a different overall tone. However, there were some familiar faces from the previous book that made cameo appearances. The beauty of it is that you don't necessarily have to read the previous book to understand and enjoy this one—it stands well on its own.
All in all, if you're looking for a fun summer read that you can breeze through in no time, I highly recommend this book. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
"The Cottage on Glass Lake" by Amy Pine is a heartwarming and engaging novel that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The story follows the journey of two women, Becca and Sadie, who are at different points in their lives but find themselves at a crossroads. Becca, recently divorced, is reeling from the betrayal of her ex-husband, while Sadie is struggling with a fear that is holding her back from pursuing her dreams.
The characters are well-developed and relatable, and I found myself rooting for both of them throughout the story. The relationship between Becca and Sadie is beautifully written, and it was a joy to watch them support and encourage each other as they navigated the challenges that life threw their way.
The setting of the novel, a quaint cottage on Glass Lake, is described in vivid detail, making it easy to imagine the beautiful scenery and picturesque surroundings. The author's writing style is engaging and the pacing of the story is just right, keeping me hooked until the very end.
Overall, I would highly recommend "The Cottage on Glass Lake" to anyone looking for a heartwarming and uplifting read. This book is perfect for fans of women's fiction, and readers who enjoy stories about personal growth and the power of friendship. I give this book 4/5 stars and cannot wait to read more from Amy Pine in the future!
The book is focused on two women taking a vacation that results in finding unexpected love. One woman is a recently divorced doctor with twin children, and the other is a single baker who is focused on the present. Both are facing personal issues that they hope to overcome during their month-long vacation. Yet the small town that the women are visiting brings unexpected love for each of them, a pair of brothers who had their own personal issues. As the two women spends time in this small town, they learn more about themselves and each other during this vacation.
This is the sequel to THE BLOOM GIRLS focusing on the younger siblings of the main couple of the previous book. This book featured multiple viewpoints, mainly from the two women. The book has a nice story vibe, and the author has a nice writing style. The secondary characters were entertaining and supportive of the two women, especially a male lead's precarious daughter. It would have been nice if there were more details in the story, like adding more pages to the end of the book or more chapters from other viewpoints. Overall, an enjoyable Amy Pine book and I look forward to reading more from the author in the future.
** Thanks to the publisher for the review copy. All opinions and thoughts in the review are my own. **
A heartfelt story about two very different women who are at different points in their lives vacationing together at a lakeside cottage. As these two women get to know each other they start to become friends. Though they are at different points in their lives their friendship becomes very strong and they help each other through some significant issues.
Becca and Sadie are wonderful characters with depth and relatability. Their friendship and the other characters they get to know while vacationing at the cottage are so much fun and gave me many other emotions to feel. Leo is the perfect addition as a romantic interest for Becca to help her let go of some of her insecurities and the sparks between Max and Sadie are exciting. But most of all this is a beautiful book about friendship and personal growth.
This book is perfectly paced and has depth and emotions that easily connect you to the characters and make you care about what happens to them. The storyline is well-conceived and superbly written.
I would love to join these characters on another thrip to the cottage. I hope you enjoy their emotional journey as much as I did!
I have voluntarily written this honest review and am extremely grateful to Forever Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this charming book.
This is what I’d consider very light fiction. There’s nothing at all wrong with it but I quit at 42% when I realized I was tired of making myself go back and read more to try to finish it. It was billed as a perfect beach read and maybe (probably!) it is for someone, but I just didn’t relate to these women and found them incredibly boring. And the cliched town men and lesbian shop owners seemed so cutesy and one dimensional. I’m a mom of five and older than these characters but I didn’t relate at all to anything about them. I don’t need to relate to my characters (I often read crime dramas and certainly don’t relate to cops or serial killers) but there just wasn’t any tension or drama or depth or anything to make me want to keep reading. It was like the literary equivalent of people watching outside a Starbucks in a resort town on a Tuesday.
All that said, it’s a perfectly fine novel if you want some light romance and talk about friendship and doing things that make you happy. Highly recommended if that’s your jam.
I read a digital copy of this book via NetGalley for review.
The Cottage on Glass Lake is Amy Pine’s second novel in her Bloom Sisters series. Dr. Becca Weiland, practicing ob/gyn, mom of 6 year old twins, sister of Alissa Adler, and new divorcé, is presented with an opportunity to get away for a bit to relax and recoup. Becca’s niece Gabi Bloom, and Gabi’s significant other Ethan Harris had rented a cottage on Glass Lake in Wisconsin, a few hours north of their Chicago homes. But Ethan suffered an emergency appendectomy and is unable to go although the reservation is already paid for. The reservation is offered to Becca and Sadie Bloom, Gabi’s other aunt, to make the trip even though they have never really clicked.
Becca is straight laced and uptight. Sadie is the life of the party. Can two such unlikely roommates move from dealing at arm’s length to developing a strong friendship? This is such a good book! The characters are well drawn and quirky. The setting is small town Americana. And the lessons learned are plentiful. Told with heart and laugh out loud humor, this delightful story is a must! I very much enjoyed this book and I do recommend it!
Despite the fact that Sadie and Becca have known each other most of their lives, the two have always gotten along like oil and vinegar. Becca, an MD and newly divorced mom of twins, has always been hyper focused and regimented, while Sadie has always been far more carefree. So when their siblings send them to Glass Lake for a month of relaxation and fun, neither can see a particularly great outcome. And while the trip definitely gets off to a rocky start, the two quickly begin to bond over waxing, shots and leaky roofs.
Soon Becca is volunteering up the house for weekly dinners with their new found friends, and Sadie is rescuing Becca from the small town police.
There are so many laugh out loud moments, from Becca's first encounter with the tent on the private beach dwelling Leo, to Sadie's acrobatics while trying to carry on a conversation with the local contractor fixing their roof. As the two women found friendship in the most unexpected of places, they also learned the importance of stepping outside their comfort zones, listening to their hearts, and above all putting themselves first. I loved this story from the very start to the beautiful end.
3.5 stars. This book follows Becca and Sadie. Their siblings are married to each other and the women could not be more different. Becca is a doctor, very Type A, twin mom and now ex wife after her husband left her for another woman. Sadie is a no strings attached kinda gal who lives life on a whim for the most part. Both women are at a crossroads and their siblings say hey take this cabin and go stay for a month together. They never really got along but they reluctantly say yes. This book follows Becca coming out of her shell and learning to live again after her divorce. It's about Sadie learning to pay attention to the serious things and also live life without fear. Sadie has a heart condition that she's ignoring because she's scared of knowing the truth and BOY could I relate to that. Both women meet men at the lake (who are ironically brothers) and I really liked Becca and Leo's relationship, but Max and Sadie were a little meh. I liked Max's daughter and thought the whole cast of characters was super fun and cute. I don't know that I"ll remember this forever, but I easily read it physically and enjoyed it every time I was reading and thats a big win!
Becca and Sadie couldn't be any more different. Becca was the image of perfection; Sadie was happy go lucky. They tolerated each other because Becca's sister divorced but currently shacked up with Sadie's brother. Who knew if they would survive the month on Glass Lake. Each shouldered a heavy burden, but something kept them from being actual friends in the beginning. The assumptions each had for the other prevented them from letting loose and being honest. A summer storm marked the beginning a of friendship between Sadie and Becca as well as with 5 locals. Together the 7 of them began a weekly Friday dinner bringing to it pieces of their Jewish traditions. Becca and Sadie learned to love themselves, built a strong friendship with each other, and find their lost pieces in Leo and Max respectively. A lot of healing took place within the pages of this book. While on the heavier side, this book would make a good beach read if you're looking for something a little deep.
I received an advance copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.
The Cottage on Glass Lake is a quick, fun, read by Amy Pine that I really enjoyed!
Dr. Becca Weiland has recently gone through a divorce and is learning what live is like as a single mother of twins. She's not sure who she is anymore and when her sister, Alissa, offers her the opportunity to stay at a lake cabin for a month, she takes her up on it.
Alissa's partner in her bakery, Sadie, also needs some time away, so Alissa suggests she go with Becca to the lake cabin. Sadie and Becca have known one another for years, but aren't exactly friends and don't exactly get along. Sadie decides to go, but realizes it could be a long month.
What ends up transpiring is what both of them didn't know they needed. Sadie helps to open Becca up a bit and Becca helps to ground Sadie a bit as well. Bring in some of the townspeople that they meet and you have the makings of a great summer read that is incredibly entertaining and fun!
**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
This was a really sweet coming into your own story. The story starts when Becca, a successful OBGYN with the “perfect” life, finds out her husband is cheating on her. This sends her into a tailspin questioning everything she knows about herself and her life. As she is going through this crisis her well meaning sister sends her off to take a vacation to get away from it all, with the catch she has to share a cabin with her sister’s sister-in-law Sadie. Sadie is the total opposite of Becca, a wild free spirit who has lived her life doing what she wants. But when Sadie gets some scary medical news she begins to question all of her life choices. This was a heart warming story about two women finding themselves and a new best friend in the process. I loved the town of glass lake and all the side characters, most especially the precocious 10 year old and her swear jar! A great beach read. I received an ARC and this is my honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and Forever books for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I am in the minority but this book did not work for me. I felt the two main characters were very stereotypically an 'Odd Couple' - the straight-laced, rule-following, Type-A doctor Becca (Bex) and the live-large-in-the-moment Sadie. The two are coerced into spending a month together at a summer cottage.
My problem with this scenario is obvious: why do characters in books always seem able to drop absolutely everything and be able to vacation/travel the world/move to a new city at the last minute?
There were good moments in the book and I enjoyed Sadie's witty dialogue but this one didn't give me all the feels. While it is a sequel, reading book 1 in the series is not necessary, but perhaps if you were a fan of book 1 you would enjoy this more.
This is an insightful, entertaining and enjoyable book. Becca is a recently divorced mother of twins. Sadie is the friend and business partner of Becca’s sister. The two women do not really like each other, but they will be sharing a cottage at the lake for a month. They have to learn to get along, to compromise and along the way they help each other to find a new perspective and open themselves up to new possibilities. They find new direction in their lives and a new outlook, as a well as a deep connection to each other that neither would have thought possible. Each women also finds an unexpected bonus at the lake…..a man who seems very interested in her. This book had me laughing, smirking and grinning wildly as these two women found a common ground and a part of themselves that had buried or never knew was there.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving this honest review
I think this was the first book I’ve read by this author, but it won’t be the last!
When Becca finds out that her husband is in advertising- himself, that is, on a dating website, she divorces him. She’s 35, and up until now, she’s lived her life fitting his version of herself. With her kids away at camp, she joins her sister’s sister-in-law for a month in Glass Lake.
Sadie is hiding a secret too, her heart might have a problem that doctors fixed when she was young. While she and Becca aren’t close, hey, it’s a month away from life, work and heart worries, right? Well, both Sadie and Becca find themselves while at the lake, along with finding two brothers.
I don’t write spoilers, so you’ll have to read this great story for yourself. It’s funny, emotional and I recommend it.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
Becca and Sadie have known each other all their lives. When Becca gets a divorce, they decide to go on a month-long vacation. Sometimes something big happens to change your course, and yourself. This seems to be the case. What an interesting story of their journey, from being who they knew they were, or thought they were, to the confusion of what is happening here. This is their life unfolding in front of their eyes, and they are following it. I enjoyed all the things that were happening, the surprise they had of seeing themselves do things they never would have even dreamed of, the growth they were discovering in themselves, and the realization of what has been happening to them. It is their journey and what life can make happen when you aren't where you belong. I received an ARC from Forever through NetGalley.
Thanks to Forever for the ARC via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. This was such a sweet story! It centers on two characters, Sadie and Becca, who've grown up in the vicinity of each other but haven't really gotten along. Becca is a recently divorced gynecologist, whereas Sadie is single and works in Becca's sister's bakery. The two are forced to take a vacation together, to a cottage on Glass Lake, and both are able to rediscover who they individually are and build a friendship together. And there are some cute guys in the town, too! The found family was so sweet and made me want to get a rental cottage in Wisconsin so I could find a similar one. I didn't realize this is a follow-up to the author's The Bloom Girls, and I don't feel like I missed out on any plot points due to not having read that one. It will be available tomorrow!
Thank you Forever/Grand Central for the review copy! I really enjoyed The Bloom Girls by Amy Pine last year and The Cottage on Glass Lake by Pine is also a win for me. This is a perfect light summer read, recommended for readers who want an charming and light hearted book for a Sunday afternoon or sitting and relaxing on vacation. The characters and plot are easy to get drawn into and I loved the breaking down of the perfectionism that Becca had (so relatable) and how Sadie's charm, go with the flow style mixed in with Becca. Stories about women's friendships, the trials of midlife and women's lives, and stories with moments of relatable humor and meet cutes... these work for me. It's nice to sit and escape with a read that is joyfully heartwarming, engaging, and filled with some welcome notes of humor and affection.
