I need ALL my friends to go see a WNBA and/or WNSL game this year.

This book is really pretty analytical/ lots of statistics. But the author skillfully weaves in narratives and feminist rhetoric. I feel like I learned a lot (and now I’m angry, so… go support women’s sports if you want equal pay in the workplace)

“When women own, things change”

Really really enjoyed this book and all the information/statistics within it. Women’s sports are on the rise and rightly so, but still so much work to be done. LFG!

My first impression of "Money, Power, Respect" was pretty positive. But after letting the book percolate for a bit, my opinion of it has soured. Not because I disagree with the goal(s) of achieving more equal - even to some extent equitable - compensation (to that of men) for women in sports (and life), but because this book is not how you argue for that goal.

Why? Well, I have two major issues with the overall argument of the book.

1) MacKenzie argues that having the discussion in the arena of sports is a good idea because it's a high profile representation of the greater societal discussion/cause. I disagree with this wholeheartedly. There are certainly many overlapping issues, but other than in instances where women compete directly with men, the real-life "equal pay for equal work" equation just does not directly translate into the realm of sports.

2) Partly because of this argument, the author is almost forced to work from the assumption that women's sports and men's sports are the same. In most cases that is simply not the case. I think you can argue that women's sports should be valued the same as men's sports, but that's not the same conversation. However, because the book essentially insists on this, the evidence is weak and many arguments deliberately misleading.

The result is a book that leans more on inflaming feelings than presenting objective arguments - and objective arguments exist aplenty - and thus allow naysayers to engage the not-so-good arguments and disqualify the actually solid points by association. It is, to my mind, a way of persuading people that achieves nothing but digging heels in harder.

I read this at what seemed like an apt time: while the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup was happening. This book was only okay. There's good information in here about the systemic underfunding of women's sports and how that contributes to lower wages (poverty level or below) for professional women athletes. That was good but I was left wanting.

Things I wanted:
- discussion of Venus Williams' advocacy for equal prize money at Wimbledon
- more discussion of international women's sports and the issues there (the World Cup brought this to the forefront of my mind)
- the prevalence of men's coaches in women sports and how that limits opportunities for women
- more explicit discussion of the role race plays in all of this

Maybe the next sports book I read will tackle some/all of this.

A needed book about the efforts to find power and equity in women's sports. While there are sections that wade into statistics a bit too much, they are dwarfed by the number of compelling stories told here. It is also a helpful primer into the world faced by transgendered athletes. Worth the time and trouble to seek out.
