One little girl, two broken hearts, and the woman that could save them both.
Delilah had dreamt of owning her own confectionery ever since her grandmother taught her to bake, specifically her prized divinity that she delighted in making every holiday. But women owning a store was not something that happened, so she spent her days thinking of ways to make it come to be. She would design the store she would never have in her mind, until one day when she saw the ad for mail order brides, and she found the "what if?" she had been looking for to make it happen.
Clarence had lost his wife to illness but, more importantly, Lizzie, his young daughter, had lost her mother. He had been caring for Lizzie himself, but soon he would have to travel on business and could not bear to leave his broken-hearted little girl with his house staff. Then, one afternoon, his housekeeper handed him a paper about mail order brides, and he quickly put out his own ad, never dreaming he would find the perfect woman for his situation. But, dreams do come true sometimes, and Delilah answered.
Could she be the one to bring life back to their world, or would she break them even more?
This is an OK mail-order bride romance, with likable characters, but I just didn't sense the connection between Delilah and Clarence. It gets 3 stars from me.
I thought it was just too short to have enough character development. I wanted more backstory on both Delilah and Clarence.
I liked both Delilah and Clarence, but just didn't sense that they were in love. The author told the reader they were, but didn't really show it in the story. I did like that so many characters (Delilah, Clarence, Delilah's parents, the servants) tried so very hard to help little Lizzie deal with the loss of her beloved mother.
The premise of the series, with each story having a special recipe that the h makes, is a lot of fun. I plan to try some of them, since they sound delicious -- but I was disappointed that a recipe for divinity was not included in this story.
This is a clean romance, with nothing but kisses. If you only want to read romances that do not include sex scenes, this one might work for you.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
What a sweet story, Divinity for Delilah was to read. I could use a piece of the candy right now. Divinity is surrounded by five brothers and being the only girl, wants a new life. She decides to except an offer of a marriage of convenience, in exchange she will get the candy shop she always wanted. When she arrives and finally meets Clarence, she realizes that she has gotten more than she expected. For her to be just a country girl to a wife and Mom to Lizzie and a grand estate. What more could she ask for, love. I was given a copy of the book by the author for an honest review.
This of course is another great story from this incredible series! If you love sweet surprises and romance then this story is for you! I throughly enjoyed reading Delilah’s happily ever after! Finding a great husband and daughter that are as genuine and kind is a rare treat! This story is filled with ever emotion from an grieving little girl to an exceptionally loving and giving man, with one strong and independent woman!
Farrah Lee puts her spin on this popular Old Timey Holiday Kitchen series. This retiree enjoyed that Clarence was a man of means and he honored his promise to Delilah. Delilah is a resourceful young woman, who uses her passion to win over a child, a man and the town. A page turning tasty read. Would have liked to have the recipe for some mouth melting divinity candy.
This was a sweet story about a sweet confectioner who took a chance on a marriage to start her own business. Delightful characters, including a young girl uncertain whether or not to accept the new woman in her father's life. A delightful fairy tale ending.
I love divinity. My only disappointment in the book is that Farrah Lee doesn’t give us a divinity recipe. Delilah certainly gets a gem when she answers Clarence’s letter, but he also got the perfect lady to understand his daughter, Lizzie, and for himself. I enjoyed this book.
