Hall of Blood and Mercy #1-3

Hall of Blood and Mercy: The Complete Trilogy

Rate this book
I'm one scrappy wizard.

As someone with barely a flicker of magic, I've spent my life being mocked and surviving fights with bullies. But when my parents die in an accident, and I find myself responsible for our whole wizard house and family, I know my usual tactics aren't going to cut it.

The situation veers from bad to catastrophic when my backstabbing cousin stages a coup and takes my family hostage.

I barely manage to flee, but the only supernatural willing to help me is Killian Drake--the most feared vampire in the region, and a far more deadly villain than the jerk threatening me.

Is Killian sexy and charismatic? Heck yeah.

He's also so powerful that my flight or fight instincts kick in every time our eyes meet.

But he is also the first person to believe I might have more than just a scrap of magic. And if I can convince him to train me, I might get strong enough to free my family and get my house back.

I'm not sure what happens when a scrappy wizard is taught how to fight by a hall of deadly vampires, but I'm about to find out.

This completed urban fantasy trilogy is packed with humor, adventure, and a sweet, slow burn romance between a vertically challenged wizard and the most lethal vampire in town.

The Magiford Supernatural City universe features vampires, wizards, fae, and werewolves!

This bundle includes all three books in the Hall of Blood and Mercy Trilogy: Magic Forged, Magic Redeemed, and Magic Unleashed.

Hands down my favorite K. M. Shea series I’ve read so far! I buddy read this with my family and we had such a fun and grand time laughing and talking about this series together. And Hazel and Killian will be forever be two of my new top favorite characters of all time. 😍🥰😍🥰

⚡️Magic Forged—4.5 stars⚡️

This was so fun and I loved every minute of it! Honestly I never thought I’d love a book that focuses so much on vampires alongside wizards, but this book caught me off guard by just how much I ended up loving it.

The characters are the true stars and stealers of the whole book starting with Hazel who is amazing, strong, caring, and vertically challenged which makes this short girl extremely happy! And while it took me a bit I warmed up to the vampires especially Killian who’s kind of a hard nut to crack but I actually ended up liking him and his and Hazel’s snarky banter made me smile and snicker. I also really like the Paragon, Celestina, and Josh though I DO NOT like Rupert—he’s just so RUDE.

The plot was super interesting as well and I like how the author wove in Hazel’s struggles with the mystery of the vampire murderer which makes for never having a dull moment.

The only reason I docked a half star is because I did feel the story had a tiny bit of a slow start and in the beginning it was missing some of this author’s usual snark and humor (which comes in more as Hazel becomes comfortable with the Drakes) which surprised me a bit though I understand she was setting up the world and characters as a whole.

Very much loving this story and these characters, and I’m glad I’m reading this series with my family!

‼️Content‼️

Language: crap; geez; sucked; heck; hell; oh my gosh; badass; gosh

Violence: fighting with weapons, magic, and hand to hand (not detailed); bullying; a character is shoved out a window; injuries and blood (not detailed); a creature attacks a character; a character is thrown off a balcony; a serial killer is on the loose murdering humans and vampires (the deed of killing is never shown, only the bodies are found)

Sexual: mild suggestive hints

Drug/Alcohol: a character is poisoned

Other: magic; vampires, werewolves, fae, wizards and other magical creatures/beings; death and grief; humans are hired as blood donors for vampires; vampires (obviously) drink blood (packaged and from human donors the latter of which is never shown)

⚡️Magic Redeemed—5 stars⚡️

I didn’t think this book would top the first one, but boy does it manage to do so!

I fell in love with these characters even more then I already had and the snarky banter has turned up and I am HERE FOR IT! ESPECIALLY the banter between Hazel and Killian—top tier and made me chortle and snort and snicker at nearly every turn. I also like how we’re seeing more of Killian’s POV as it’s helped me crack into the vampire a bit more and understand him better. And Hazel is so strong and wonderful—I love watching her grow more and more confident and sure of herself and become closer to the Drakes all the time. And Celestina, Josh, and the Paragon are all still amazing, and I liked the brief scene with Leila as well—she seems like a super cool girl.

The plot just kept ramping up and up and while I didn’t love a certain choice made by a certain character near the end (can’t say much because spoilers) I understood why they did what they did even if it was SO HARD to read.

I am pumped for the final book and for everything to turn out well for the characters! (Please let things turn out well…)

⚡️Magic Unleashed—5 stars⚡️

Oh my goodness I loved this so much!!!! Definitely hands down my favorite book in the whole trilogy and these characters have made it to my unofficial most favorite characters ever list and I will scream and squeal about them for all eternity now and forevermore because I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!!! 😍😍😍😍

Hazel, Killian, and the rest of the vampires and wizards go through so much change and growth and I loved seeing them all come together as one giant family of battle prepared crazy, lol. Hazel and Killian especially go through SO MUCH and grow stronger and closer as a result and I loved it all, especially them growing closer and sweeter together—that’s probably my favorite part, not gonna lie. 🥰 I’m a sucker for their romance, okay? Still loved all the other characters too even Rupert who I didn’t like in book one but have grown fond of now. Hazel’s childhood friends, Felix and Momoko, got more page time here then the other books and I grew to like them a lot as I never had a full opinion on them before since we didn’t get to see much of them in the previous books. And the House is a hoot and I love it especially when it locks vampires in the basement. 😂🥰

So much of this story is focused on mercy and forgiveness and trust and it really touched me and made everything going on that much more powerful, especially in all the ways Killian and Hazel extend trust to each other—it’s all very powerful and beautiful.

Also the aspect of vampires drinking blood from people was soooo well handled. I was a little concerned at first on how the author was going to handle this part but I needn’t have worried as she did a super great job without anything turning gross or creepy.

This was the one series in the author’s Magiford world I wasn’t sure I would like but boy was I wrong! I’ll be shocked if any of the other series in this universe come close to the love I have for Hazel and Killian. I highly recommend this series even if you’re unsure about the whole vampire thing like I was. So happy this series was the first one my family and I buddy read together!

4.5 stars // read January 2023

I had mixed feelings about Magic Forged when I read it the first time a while back, but after reading more in the Magiford-verse, I decided to revisit the trilogy and give it another try- and I’m glad I did.

Thoughts:

-The petal scene was hilarious. Easily my favorite moment of the trilogy.

-While the other spin-off series can be read on their own, The Hall of Blood and Mercy gives a good introduction to the world of Magiford. Now that I’ve read all of the currently released books set in this universe, I have to say that Leila’s series is still my favorite- but this still holds up well too.

-Fun side characters! Also, I didn’t really care for Killian the first time I read Magic Forged- *ducks rotten tomatoes*- but I have to admit, I did like him more as the story progressed.

-Not predictable, but follows trends that I’ve noticed in Kitty’s other books- including being very addicting, help.

-Personally, I tend to avoid stories that include romances with vampires in them.* From what I’ve seen, vampire/non-vampire romances tend to have an unhealthy power dynamic and can just end up feeling creepy and controlling. That wasn’t the case for me here- I think that the author does a good job avoiding these problematic elements by focusing on mutual respect and trust, and incorporating that into the story in a major way.

*(The other exception being, of course, the City Between series by W. R. Gingell.)

I love this series. The whole universe of Magiford is one of my favorites to reread multiple times. This one in particular is my favorite.

Some themes:
- betrayal (MMC Hazel is betrayed by her cousin immediately. This leads to her seeking refuge)(she feels betrayed by her parents too)
- seeks refuge + only her enemy is willing to help her
- servant to guard dog (really she just cleaned with the other servants and then got moved up to being trained. He just called her his guard dog as a joke)
- slight torture (her family is being abused by her cousin and she can’t do anything about it)
- murders and mystery (someone is murdering vampires and they’re human employees. Killian, the leader is vampires, is trying to find out who)
- breaking and entering (Killian gets hired to break and enter a vault…a vault that Hazel needed something from)
- break up (they weren’t together but he pushed her away)
- 2nd chance (ishhhh. He tries to fix it after realizing that she can protect herself)
- war duel (they have to enter a certamen which is how they defeat the bad guy..girl)
- loveeeeeee (we get our romance!)
- vampires (obviously. But they do drink blood and there is only one detailed scene of drinking from someone directly. Everything is else is through a blood bag)
- wizards (they don’t use spells and stuff. They mostly channel magic through their person and it can appear in lightening, fire, water, etc. the fae do the enchanting and spells)
- politics (because Killian is the leader of the vamps in the Midwest, he is often dealing with the political side of things. And Hazel has to play along.)

Now to the good stuff!

*SPOILERS*

Basically Hazel becomes the adept of her house. Which is the leader. However she is super weak that leads to a coup and her fleeing for her life. None of the allies are willing to help her but an enemy is.

Killian Drake isn’t exactly an enemy. More of a predator to all supernaturals as he is the Eminence (lead vamp and most powerful in the Midwest). He takes Hazel in as more of a plotting and entertaining investment. He at first makes her a servant but after an attack, he makes her train. And he also is invested in her lack of magic.

Turns out her parents had it sealed when she was child. Reasons why are revealed later but the betrayed is felt. However there are bigger problems. Someone is murdering vampires and human who are associated with vamps. No one can figure out who. They just know Fae are somehow involved. Wellllllll later Hazel figures it out and rushes to save them. And she does while also unlocking her powers.

Book 2

Her powers are unlocked and she’s been training with them. But now she’s trying to so,be the problem of her House and Mason (the cousin who staged a coup). She needs the signet ring (to bond to the house as an adept) but she can’t get into her parents’ vault at Tutu’s bank without an ID. So Killian arranges for them to legally test Tutu’s security so they can steal the ring. And they do. But Mason finds out and threatens hothead vamps with old magic. And Hazel sacrifices the ring for their lives.

Life goes on. She’s sad but she continues training and gets closer to Killian. He plans these by forcing her to go as a date to events and stuff. The next day after the ball she is threatened and could’ve been killed. So Killian pushes her away and pushes her (through manipulation) to challenge Mason. She wins and takes over for the house. Killian is miserable and has spies watching out for her.

Book 3

Hazel is training her house to be better. Killian is searching for a way to protect her from the Night Court and is literally so miserable. At the Curia Cloisters an attack happens targeted towards Killian and the men with him. They barely survived only thanks to Hazel coming back for them and saving their butts. Killian then presses for an alliance and she ends up agreeing. Their terms are that she trains with them and they help train her House. So now Wizards and Vamps are working together.

She still hasn’t forgiven Killian for pushing her away and won’t let him get close to her. But he tries. After a few more attacks and a party, they both get closer to again. But she demands they wait till the issue with the Night Court is resolved. A certamen is scheduled and they fight the court. And as insurance, Killian and Hazel have a secret weapon to defeat them. The End!

Kidding. They get their happily ever after. And the secret weapon is him doing the one thing he refuses to do ever. Drink directly from someone. But not just anyone. No he drinks from her, which gives him full immunity to her magic.

A few more kisses and maybe a proposal. But who knows. Go read it!

Great paranormal series with modern far and wizards and vampires. This trilogy follows the story of barely magical Hazel and the most powerful vampire around and their friendship with maybe more, and how they make things right in Magiford.

Not sure what made me give this 5 stars the first time I read it (3 years ago)
Sure, it's a fun entertaining read.
My main issue apart from several massive info dumps was Hazel's immaturity, I just kept thinking 'she's a child!!' often acting, thinking, seeming more 12 than the reported 22. with an almost willful ignorance and obliviousness combined with that youthful attitude of thinking she knows all the answers...
the writing style with overuse of exclamation points, italics and add lib comments in parenthesises only served to highlight that impression almost making it feel like you'r reading a teenagers diary... only to randomly use expressions like "noblesse oblige" which seemed totally out of character.

It was also weird the way she described herself sometimes especially while in the midst of running for her life... you're being chased barefoot and in your PJs, fearing for your safety, your life, but sure why not stop to tell us what your freaking hair looks like!!!
Also, in the first book 20 chapters with 'Hazel' as if to make it seem like a dual POV book when really only the very last chapter had another POV - somewhat misleading and annoying

Hazel and Killian are GOALS!!!
I love Hazel and how she is her virtuous self who has a sense of integrity no matter what happens. Her fierce love for those around her and what's right is so special. I'm so glad she doesn't let that change, nor does she let Killian push her around.
I love Killian and how he softens and learns mercy from Hazel. I love seeing the side of him that cares, especially the extreme slow-burn of his feelings for Hazel.

This series is full of fantasy fighting, magic, slow-burn clean romance, and witty characters, fun banter, and two magical species you'll be rooting for!

💋Clean Romance, kisses only

Book 1:
A nice start to a series! Easy to read and following along and the author used excellent descriptions to picture the background.
I enjoyed the idea that due to the magic dying out, the supernaturals decided to go public. Though, they still keep mostly to themselves and have a different set of rules to follow than regular humans.
The story starts out with a coup in a wizard house and the main character seeks refuge with a vampire family. This leads the way to some fun banter between the main character and other creatures that could kill her.
My issue is the serial murderer killing people and how sometimes that plot gets forgotten about in the midst of training stories and hanging out in a pool. The main character seems to go back and forth on whether or not the murders are on her mind and if she should be bothered by them.

I would recommend this for pretty much anyone who likes urban fantasy for any age group. There’s maybe one actual swear word, so if you don’t like swearing this is for you.

Book 2:
This is a fun followup to the previous book! Hazel tries to get her House back the proper way (ie the legal way) and it lets readers learn more about the politics of the world. She also learns more about how to become a better leader and how she plans to lead whenever she reclaims her House.
I always enjoy the interactions with the Paragon and Aphrodite, of course! They both add humor to the story.
This book is a little less climactic than the other, but that’s not a bad thing, this book’s storyline is more talk. And there are less unnecessary parentheses (you’ll know what I mean if you read it or if you read the other) in this story.

This book is good for all ages like the previous one and there is minimal swearing.

Book 3:
Lovely finish to a series! Reading Killian and company try to get back in Hazel’s good graces is amusing. The story line with the Night Court gets intriguing and the conclusion is well done.
The epilogue is a nice touch and I would love it if more books were in this series.

I really enjoyed this series by K.M Shea, having previously read the other series, which I didn't quite get into. Here, I enjoyed the dynamic of our hero duo. The story is also well-written, which makes it easy to immerse myself in the story and get carried away. The author knows how to use humor in her story and the dialogues between our characters are quite funny. I think it's the combination of humor, romance and action that I enjoy the most. It makes the reading experience immediately more interesting and addictive, and the characters more accessible and engaging.

In Hall of Blood and Mercy, we follow Hazel Medeis, heiress to the Medeis house after the death of her parents. We see her grow up, survive, fight to regain what is rightfully hers, and battle the betrayals she suffers along the way. Hazel is strong, determined and never gives up, despite everything that happens to her. I also appreciated the friendships she makes throughout the story, who support her in her battles.

Coming back to the way K.M. Shea writes, I'd like to say she has a certain talent. She manages to keep us on the edge of our seats all the way through, giving us two storylines: the murders of the vampires and their loved ones, and Hazel's quest for her home, all the while managing to end with a shared mystery. Over the course of each book, the author gives us more and more of Killian's point of view, allowing us to discover and understand him better. Indeed, with Hazel's POV alone, Killian would have remained a real mystery to us.

In conclusion, I recommend this book for those who enjoy urban fantasy. The story is simple but entertaining. Those who like soft, slow-burn romances involving witches and vampires will be delighted.

Absolutely loved it.

This contains all three books about Killian Drake and Hazel Medeis. Vampire and Wizard. When Hazel's parents die, a relative states she isn't strong enough to take over and tries to take her inheritance from her. Her family are able to get her out, but no other Wizard House will help her, totally lacking allies she throws herself to ask a roomful of vampires for aid. One agrees, Killian Drake, head of Drake family and also the Eminence, sort of head of vampires overall this area. Eventually things sort out and she grows to befriend the vampires and then Killian kicks her out. She takes back her house and things do work out, but you'll read the books and find out. The books are good, the characters and interactions. Though I admit a sneaking admiration still for Chloe and Noctus. But Killian is a good vampire as romantic, smouldering ones go, lol. Lots of supernatural action.
Highly recommended.

AN AMAZING SERIES …

To begin with, I just want to say how stoked I am to have stumbled across K. M. Shea. She is an incredible author and I’m enjoying her books so much. This series did not disappoint in anyway and I engulfed it as quickly as a mum with a 5 month old and super active toddler could!

Shea has an uncanny ability to to intricately build and develop wonderful characters who are so incredibly likeable. She also knows how to nail a slow burn romance and interweave a range of emotions, including subtle humour, into her stories. The twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat and the mix of modern with ‘old world’ themes is enjoyable … I just can’t fault her as an Author!

… I’m also super intrigued about the Paragon!

The first, and probably one of the best of Shea’s Magiford trilogies. I’ve read this before, but left review for each individual book. This time I read this version, all the way through as though it were just one book. Aside from a point in the third book where I felt things dragged a bit, Shea does an amazing job introducing and setting up her world, her magic system, and her characters and keeps the story moving in terms of both plot and character and relationship building throughout. Two things set Shea’s urban fantasy apart from many other urban fantasies. They are in the “sweet and clean” category, which, while becoming more common, was not particularly common when she started out. Also, Shea’s books are funny, and generally not angsty.

Magiford Supernatural City is one of my absolute favorite urban fantasies, and this trilogy in particular is just excellent!

Hazel and Killian's romance is hilarious, swoony, and endearing, and the plot feels high stakes without getting stressful. The side characters are so well fleshed out, and by the end you find yourself not only in love with the MCs, but with the entire ensemble.

And the TWIST at the end of book three... *slow clap* Shea led us there throughout the series, so it didn't feel like a bait and switch, but it was definitely so cool (and so romantic, IYKYK).

I think I've read these books three times now? And it definitely won't be the last. An absolute delight, as always.

Amazing world and characters

Shea has a an incredibly light and detailed hand with the world building and characters. The world is well developed with its beauties and issues, and the author sprinkles important details about current events and history as the plot moves without lore dumping. And boy, does the plot move!
The characters are marvelous- unique voices and personalities that develop at their own pace, and are so ingrained that you can recognize the characters in other books even when they aren’t named explicitly.
Romantically, her couples are powerhouses: badass, competent people on their own who are stronger together.
All in all, A+ stories!

Favorite Vampire trilogy ever!

I couldn’t get through the Twilight series of books. So, even though I read Anne Rice years ago, I haven’t really been interested in in vampire stories. I loved K.M. Shea’s fairy tale series so much I read 12 of those in about 10 days. My daughters told me to read the Magiford series. I’m so glad I did! What a fun read! Shea’s characters are so well developed. I love Hazel’s journey, and the affect she has on Killian that is not overly romanticized or contrived in any way. I can’t wait to start the next trilogy. Well done MS Shea!!! Well done!

KM Shea shows her talents again

I love these fantasy series set in the magical town of Magiford, USA. K M Shea is one of the rare writers that can combine a mean story and badass female lead characters with an ability to write (as a pernickerty ex-English teacher I get very annoyed with the poor grammar and clumsy vocabulary that seems to be a hallmark of most 'USA Today' approved writers). These stories are so much fun to read that I keep coming back to them over and over again as old favorites on Kindle. I thourouly recommend K M Shea for anyone who enjoys great fantasy!

what is not to love?!?

So I’m completely biased, since KMS is my ALL TIME FAVORITE, but I LOVE this series and this story! I have read it multiple times and it still leaves me with a bit of a book hangover! ❤️❤️❤️ Hazel is one of my Book BFFs! Although I think this would be true of all the Magiford FMCs. They are imperfectly perfect! And their fellas? Swoon!!! So all 3 book between one cover? A-Ma-Zing!!!

A Fabulous Read!

In this trilogy we have a number of supernatural species who are learning how to be tolerant of those who aren't their own kind. This story about Hazel & Killian, a wizard & vampire who are about to learn that maybe each species are not always best keeping to themselves. Oh-oh look out because the sparks and magic are going to fly! If you like snarky, funny & slow burn bit of romance then this book is for you. Another great trilogy from K.M.Shea!

Engaging and witty.

I dont usually write a review, just click the stars and move on to the next book, but I loved this series so much that I feel the need to explain why.

It is witty, with hilarious, well defined and varied characters, engaging story lines and while it ends in the happily ever after you expect, there is things along the way that are wonderfully surprising.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes fae fantasy.

Hilarious and amazing

I loved how the scary almost villain became the love interest, turning everything into the cutest, most hilarious, exciting, and surprising book series I have ever read! I hope someday I can write almost as well as KM Shea. I will recommend this book series to anyone I meet! I hope I can read more like these books from this amazing author, and get to laugh once again at her genius mind

incredible and quite unpredictable

Really amazing. It’s my first ever foray into the vampire stuff but I liked Ms. Shea’s other novels, and this one didn’t disappoint either!
The characters are incredible. the dynamics, the suspense, the world of Magiford supernaturals are all very captivating.
But the trilogy also raises questions of trust and true motives and deep friendships, and of course love. And that’s what makes the stories so interesting

I'm SO glad I discovered K. M. Shea and her Magiford Supernatural City series. They're probably my most favorite urban fantasy books. They're clean reads with sweet romance, characters I adore, and great humor.

The Hall of Blood and Mercy is my favorite of the trilogies so far. Hazel is just too fun and Killian is the most debonair of the love interests in all the trilogies (again, so far!). I adored this couple so much that I reread the series months after reading it the first time.

Great novels

I love reading all manner of novels (especially supernatural ones) and I am glad to add this to my four-figure book library. A very welcome, and uniquely different, relationship between the various supe-species (this one being vampire/wizard based). Humour teams up with romance and all manners of fighting in a well written tale of love (and sheer bloodymindedness) conquers all. Enjoy reading. I certainly did.

An enemies to friends, then to lovers set of stories. Magiford is a Midwest town where humans and supernatural beings - vampires elves, werewolves, etc - live in proximity to each other.

when Hazel's parents die in an accident, she inherits the title of head of a Wizard House, but she has minimal magic abd a cousin stages a couple and she fleas to the Drake Estate to offer herself as a servant to the powerful head vampire Killian Drake for protection.

What an amazing series. It has everything. Action, humour, everything you'd want in a good tale. There's plenty of magic and battles between various magical beings. The characters are well developed and very believable. I enjoyed this series very much. It keeps you cheering for the good guys till the end.

This author does a great job in creating a world I would love to visit. The characters are beutifully flawed but are a work in progress. The supporting characters bring balance and levity. The world that they exist in makes me want to believe they could reasonably live close by. I enjoyed my time reading this series and would read it again.

A Great Read

I very much enjoyed that this is the complete trilogy in one book. The start is great with a happy ever after to die for. I think I'll start on the next one and I hope Kitty will be putting all of the Magiford book together later. As always thank you for sharing your worlds with me😸
