WHEN IT'S TERRORIST vs. HURRICANE ... EVERYBODY LOSES!
It's July 5th, and the Cape Cod roadways are clogged with tourists heading home from the holiday weekend and trying to outrun an approaching catastrophic hurricane.
But in the blink of an eye, their lives are thrown into chaos when terrorists bring down the bridges to the Cape, destroy the airport, and disable the ferries. Instantly, a half million terrified people have no way to escape.
And when the terrorists threaten to release anthrax on the captive population if their demands aren't met, fear turns to all-out panic.
With Category 4 Hurricane Chad barreling up the coast on a path for a direct hit on Cape Cod, it becomes frighteningly clear to everyone trapped on what has now become an island--one way or another they are probably all going to die.

I am so glad I continued with the first book in the series, now I am listening to the other books in the series. Yes the narration takes a while to get into but it does suit the story so once I am in, I am in. This was a very complicated story and I did have to write down the characters to make sure that I understand who was who and how they fit in.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and then off to the next one.
This book was much better than I was expecting it to be. What do you get when you mix action, suspense, good characters, bad people and a natural disaster all in one at Cape Cod? This book! It was a good versus evil mixed in with innocent people in the town. Well written with good characters and plot. Worth listening to or reading. I will look for more by Andrew Cunningham.
Having lived on the South Shore most of my life these landmarks are familiar to me. I've walked along the canal a few times. The potential for disaster is there. Well researched by the author.
Like suspense? Like thrillers? Then you’ll love Deadly Shore! Cape Cod is about to get hit with a double whammy! Hurricane Chad is bearing down on the vacation spot, meanwhile terrorists have taken out the bridges in the Cape leaving millions stranded. Now add in the threat of releasing anthrax if the terrorists demands aren’t met and you have a trifecta of terror. It’s fascinating to watch it all unfold.
This story intertwines several points of views. You have the disgraced former police officer Sara Cross, who together with Private Detective Marcus Baldwin follow the clues to try and thwart the terrorist demands. Then there’s Doyle an inept thief who ends up stealing more than he bargained for and the people he stole from want their property back! Doyle ends up hiding out and riding out the storm at the home of an “easy” mark, feisty senior citizen Anne. She ends up being more than he bargained for too!
This audiobook clocks in at nearly 7 hours and is narrated by Greg Hernandez. Greg has a stiff delivery and not much inflection of emotion or differentiation in character voices. Still, he did an adequate job. The excellent writing by author Andrew Cunningham easily overcomes the narrator's delivery.

To be honest was not sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised how well the story was written and narrated. In a nutshell it is a story American terrorist and four block heads from the south who are part of a white supremacists group who are thinking they are fighting to shut the government down and take over boy are they shocked when they find out it was not shutting the government down but to kill a half a million of people. Also you have other storyline a female cop who was a MP in the Marines who is butted off the force after being declared a dirty cop by her boss after he planted evidence in her car. And the one I liked best Gun Packing Granny who save a strangers life in the middle of a major hurricane. So if you like adventure, Gun Packing Granny and so much more this book is for you!
Wow! I wish I could have given this 5+ stars. ‘When it’s terrorists v. hurricane, everybody loses!’ Everyone is headed home from the 4th of July holiday on the Cape, trying to outrun the approaching hurricane. When terrorists attack, then the hurricane hits, believe me, I could not put this book down.
This was a neat little suspense thriller. Full of action and mystery, this easy read keeps you hooked and engaged throughout. There were quite a few stories being told within this book, most of them short, just giving different context on what was going on during the hurricane and attacks, but they were so far and few between I would forget what their story was. They were just filler and seemed to detract from the main storyline. Overall, still entertaining and worth a read.
Told in a journalistic style, this book contains just the right amount of horror and personal angst as we following an elderly woman, a thief, a shamed ex-policewoman, am ex-CIA man, and a crazy man out for revenge as the bridges to Cape Cod are blown up and a hurricane barrels to the Cape.
I didn't read any reviews of this and only skimmed the blurb before starting and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Plot wise, this takes place in Cape Cod on the July 4th weekend. It's July 5th and the celebrations are over and people are starting to return home, but there is a storm coming the likes of which haven't been seen in a long time! People need to leave the Island as soon as possible but as they are, the bridges in an out of the Island blow up. Terrorists are holding the people hostage and have said they will release Anthrax if their demands aren't met. The plot was well written and developed and it flowed well. It's terrifying enough with a category 4 hurricane barreling towards you, but add in the Terrorists and it created a fast paced and thrilling read!
Character wise, there were a few, we even see through the eyes of some of the terrorists, but all were well written. I liked Marcus, who is a private eye and was hired to follow a suspect for a rich client. He was calm, capable and a nice guy. Then we have Sara, a former cop who was fired for having drugs in her car, which just happened to be placed there by her boss whom hit on her and she stopped his advances. She teams up with Marcus to try to find out what is happening to her Island. I enjoyed the relationship between Marcus and Sara and hope we see more from them.
In all, this was a good read. I enjoyed both the terrorist story line and the storm story line. Both blend seamlessly together near the end and made for an exciting and fast paced read. I will definitely check out more from this author.
Greg Hernandez did a good job reading this. His voice was clear and easy to follow, I just felt he lacked a little in the performance part. I wanted him to add more tension when needed as, at the exciting bits, his pace stayed the same. Other than that he did fine.
I was voluntarily provided this free copy by the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
This is a MUST READ - perfect for this time we are living in!
Absolutely loved this book! With covid19 going on this was a great time to release this one! I couldn't wait to turn the page! Now that I have finished this one my "to be read pile" just got a little bigger because I added all of Andrew's books to it. If you like thrills, twists, and turns this is a perfect book. 💛
Set on Cape Cod island just after July 4th, plenty of folks are heading home after the holiday weekend. Terrorists put an end to their fun by cutting the island off from the mainland killing several and threatening more damage. On top of this, Hurricane Chad is about to hit land and hit it hard.
This was a fast-paced fun action read. There’s Marcus, a CIA operative, who’s been following a suspicious crew and ended up saving Seth’s life. Seth has a key to the terrorists’s plans. Meanwhile, disgraced ex-police detective Sara has noticed Marcus skulking around and the two have to decide whether to work together on this major threat or work independently. Then there’s Joe Doyle who made a very questionable decision to steal from his boss, but he got more than he bargained for and now he’s on the run for his life. With the island cut off, he decides to hide in a little tucked away place, taking the elderly Anne hostage.
I love big weather events and how they impact humans, so the hurricane element of this story was a lot of fun for me. People have to prepare for it. Well, the smart people prepare for it. Hopefully the authorities prepare for it. It was interesting to see how having the island completely cut off affected this aspect of the story. Now the folks on the island can’t expect supplies and recovery crews to come in right after the storm. So they have to adjust, stretching out the supplies they do have to last longer.
My favorite character in this tale was Anne. She’s in her 80s and has weathered many a storm on the island. She’s gone the shelters before and found them wanting so some years ago she made the decision to wait out any storm at home. She’s smart enough to prepare her home for the fury of Mother Nature and has laid in supplies and boarded up windows. But she wasn’t expecting a desperate Joe to show up at her door. I like her response to this situation though I felt that Joe’s ineptness was a bit overplayed. He’s in his mid 30s and yet he acts like he’s in his 20s. Anne treated him like a wayward kid that just needed some guidance, but I think there comes an age where very few of us can pull off being simply a wayward kid who just needs a little push in the right direction.
The back and forth between Sara and Marcus was OK. I liked Sara’s backstory but I found her acceptance of Marcus (who she just witness kill someone with a silencer) to be a little too quick. I don’t recall anyone at any time during the story independently verifying Marcus’s credentials. Seth was a bumbling idiot who was used by the terrorists but he helped move the plot forward.
The plot pulls in many threads. The US President made a promise 3 years ago to spend the weekend at a certain key supporter’s house on the very weekend of the attack. Then there’s anthrax, which may or may not be more of problem with the hurricane coming in. Then a lost valuable that belonged to a murdered priest turns up. The mastermind behind it all has a personal vendetta with a Cape Cod family. All these little strings got pulled into the overall plot and some of them mattered and some of them didn’t go anywhere at all. for instance, I would have liked a line or two to wrap up the ending for the murdered priest.
All together, it was a fun action flick with some interesting characters. I would like to see Sara and Marcus team up again. I hope Anne gets a chance to have a little vacation in Bermuda.
I received a free copy of this book via The Audiobook Worm.
The Narration: Greg Hernandez was OK. While he was good with some emotions (excitement, surprise, anger), he didn’t really have distinct character voices. I had to pay close attention during dialogue sections to keep track of who said what. His female voices weren’t particularly feminine. His pacing was good and the volume level was steady all the way through.
What a chilling premise: it’s the height of tourist season, a hurricane is barreling its way towards Cape Cod, and there’s been a multi-front terrorist attack. As if that’s not enough to keep the reader’s interest piqued, add the element that the terrorists have a back-up plan for complete and thorough devastation.
There are several storylines going at once, which gives readers a wider view of the impact of both the natural and unnatural elements happening on the island. Readers not only follow the primary story of private investigator (and more) Marcus Baldwin and ex-detective Sara Cross hunting down the terrorists, but readers also see the side stories: people stranded on a ferry boat, cars plunging into the water when a bridge explodes, a book club meeting that goes into survival mode, and a thief who can’t escape the crime scene.
My favorite secondary story was that of Anna, a tough-as-nails elderly woman who doesn’t take crap from anyone. She’s a survivor and so clever. Cunningham’s skilled characterization shows best in the Anna scenes and makes-up for a few others that fell a little flat or into the cliché zone. The side-stories are where readers get just a touch of comic relief -- especially with the ladies trapped at their book club. The only side-story that didn’t seem to fit was the awkward relationship between Marcus and Sara; I think this is supposed to be a romance? Or maybe it was convenience sex? Whatever it was, it lacked any spark and really added very little if anything to the story.
Author Andrew Cunningham does an excellent job of showing across-the-board chaos and panic. He realistically depicts the best and worst of the human condition and how people either rise and work together or turn on each other to survive. You gotta love a story where local law bands together for a greater purpose. They are all in because they signed-up to protect and serve.
Deadly Shore has more than a few surprises, and the story is unsettling from the respect of it being so realistic in this awful world of both domestic and international terrorism.
ABOUT THE AUDIO NARRATION: I listened at 1.25x speed, which seemed perfect for the pace of the book. I enjoyed narrator Greg Hernandez’s reading and thought that he excelled with several of the characters. (especially the bad guys!) I never had any trouble keeping the parts straight, and the story was told from a lot of different perspectives, which Hernandez handled without a glitch. I would listen to another book narrated by Hernandez (and even look for them) – and hope for another in this series.
Thank you to Audiobookworm Promotions and the author for providing me a free audio download of this book in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give. Full review and other features on Hall Ways Blog http://kristinehallways.blogspot.com/...
I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Greg Hernandez. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
During the peak of the high season a terrorist group makes the three bridges joining the Cape Cod with the main land explode, just before communicating their hard demands to the president. To make matters worse the Cape Cod will suffer one of the worst hurricanes of the last years.
This was a fun and interesting listen. Cunningham presented different angles to the disaster in order to give more depth to the story. We see how different sectors of the population suffered the attacks and the coming of the hurricane. There were interesting characters which interactions I enjoyed. It was clear that Sarah and Marcus were going to be key characters in this novel. There was a secondary plot which could have made a whole other book by itself if it were more developed. It was good to give more action to the book, but it was like Cunningham also wanted to tell this story and could not decide whether making a book or just adding it as a side story.
It was an action packed thriller without a moment of boredom though, and I quite enjoyed the ride.
Greg Hernandez's narration was clear but monotone. He made no differences for any of the characters, and honestly it was like he was reading the news. After finishing the book I read his biography and I understood where he got his style, since he worked for around twenty years as a radio news reporter. Hernandez has a good command of his voice, but he needs to understand that audiobooks are a totally different media than the radio news. At least this was a thriller, not a very personal story, for which I think this style would be an authentic killer. Anyway, the fact that all characters sounded the same made the listening more difficult since I had to pay a closer attention to check who was talking.
It was a good thriller and one that I would recommend not only to the fans of this genre but to anyone that would like to get their hands on a page turner.
Deadly Shores is a fast-paced suspenseful thriller that involves a terrorist plot to put a very large number of people at risk of death on Cape Cod. With a tremendous amount of planning and plotting, the terrorist has everything planned down to the littlest detail with scenarios for anything possible that could go wrong. However, it was not possible to foresee the violent hurricane or the phones going down on the island.
Deadly Shores was an intriguing and well-written story. There were many twists and turns that formed a believable plot. There was a lot of action and suspense with just a little romance to keep my interest piqued. While this story is centered on a terrorist attack, there are many subplots which add depth: deadly hurricane, theft, and personal relationships. This author really knows how to build up the suspense and keep your attention to the very end. The characters were well developed and engaging. Andrew did a good job of intertwining the different characters throughout.
Greg Hernandez did a good job with the narration. He had a clear and crisp voice that was easy to follow. There was not much difference between his female and male voices but I liked that he didn’t try to do a false high voice for the female. I personally would have liked to see a little more inflection at the heightened points in the story however this doesn’t take away from the listening experience.
This is the first book that I have read by Andrew Cunningham and will certainly not be my last. I was not disappointed at all. I recommend Deadly Shores to anyone that enjoys reading a suspense/thriller that will keep you entertained all the way to the end while keeping you sitting on the edge of your seat.
A high-stakes thriller set against the backdrop of Cape Cod, where a terrorist attack and an impending hurricane collide in a perfect storm of chaos. Cunningham wastes no time plunging readers into the action, crafting a scenario that feels disturbingly plausible and relentlessly tense.
The plot is a layered web of intersecting storylines. bringing a unique lens to the crisis, though some arcs (like Joe’s hostage situation with the elderly Anne) veer into implausibility. Still, Anne steals the show with her grit and hurricane-hardened wisdom, grounding the narrative with emotional depth and resilience. I won't throw in any spoilers but I will say Ann is my favorite person ever!
Cunningham’s pacing is brisk, and the stakes escalate with every chapter. The hurricane element adds a visceral urgency, forcing characters to adapt not just to human threats but to nature’s fury. Couldn't put it down! Read it in 2 days ( I did actually have to put it down a few times.
I grew up near the Cape. So, of course, I was intrigued by this book! Yes, there were sad parts. Suspenseful, daring, scary parts! If you've ever experienced a hurricane, you will feel like you are doing so, again, in this story. While I followed all the story lines, I think my favorite was the thief hiding in the old lady's house. Doyle & Ann become fast friends, yeah, death all around you can do that to people. I really enjoyed sassy Sara as a character, too. Feminist that I am. Female cop in a man's world. Go, Girl! Mason, yeah, gotta hate him. You might want to sympathize with him for losing his parents, but come on, killing half a million people as payback? Blowing up bridges, ferries and airports are one thing, but threatening biological terrorism, AND a category 4 hurricane coming at them? Major fear and panic and looting , from some of the friendliest people on earth!
This story kept me riveted! I know some of these places, I was enjoying the story and savoring it slowly.
I chose to listen to this audiobook after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
There’s so much going on in Deadly Shore that I had trouble stopping listening because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The bridges out of Cape Cod are blown up and there’s a hurricane headed their way. No one can leave! And now what are the terrorists going to do with all of those stranded people? A few years ago I would have said the terrorist part of the story was unbelievable but nowadays, anything is possible.
I liked the relationship between Marcus and Sara and how they worked together.
Greg Hernandez, the narrator, has a great voice although he read the story rather than gave it life. All of the voices were the same which I can live with, but when something exciting happened, he didn’t change his narration at all.
I recommend Deadly Shore for anyone who likes suspense.
I give it 3 1/2 stars. Deadly Shore was action packed but almost too much action. The hurricane hitting the Cape just as a terrorist group destroys the bridges, docks, and air strips. Wow! Horrible yet gripping. However, while I understand the plot needs to bring the various events and people that were involved with the terrorist act into play, it seemed like (pardon the pun) overkill. People were brought in that felt more like fillers and were not necessary. A couple and their daughter were brought in, a book club group, a CIS agent turned PI, an ex/cop, the police, an older lady, a thief, a billionaire and….yeah. Most of these were necessary but It still felt like a little too much. I under the intention of the author - to give credibility to the various events taking place. It still seemed too much to me. The ending was very anti-climatic. Good story with promise. It just deliver on the promise to me.

As if a threatened deadly hurricane isn't bad enough, it's the 5th of July holiday, and tourists are trying to leave their vacations on Cape Cod when terrorists block all means of going by blowing up the bridges, airport, and ferry ports...all access and egress to the peninsula.
This novel is a thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. How will local law enforcement protect their residents and the many visitors to the beloved vacation place? Having lived on Cape Cod for many years, it was interesting to read about well-known areas and to surmise what could happen, both with hurricanes and an alleged terrorist. It's enough to cause shivers.
The description of the area and the distinct attributes of the characters add even more color to this tale, making it an enjoyable read.
I've just finished the last Cunningham book I've been able to find. They are ALL good stories with strong female protagonists and great plots. DEADLY SHORES was suspenceful and hard to put down.
If I had anything to change about the book it would be the misuse of a few terms:. He misuses further and farther (one refers to distance -farther- and one to additional -further. Another misuse is rein versus reign. Some one reins it in, not reigns it in. Rein refers to stopping something: like a horse in stride. Reign refers to monarchy as in the reign of Henry the Eighth. These terms are improperly repeated in all his books.
Overlooking those few things, the reader cannot help but LOVE his stories, his plots, his strong protagonists.
This book is filled w/action and suspense from the start. I normally listen via audio in my car to & from work, however, I couldn’t put this book down! It’s filled w/well developed relatable characters and a gripping story. Andrew Cunningham does an incredible job keeping all the story-lines flowing smoothly. I would recommend this book to fans of mystery, action, disaster and detective works. It was highly enjoyable 5 Stars *****
Greg Hernandez is one of the best narrators ever! His voice is crystal clear and very easy to follow.
I’m looking forward to another great story Wisdom Springs Written by: Andrew Cunningham Read by: Greg Hernandez.
The plot of this Andrew Cunningham novel revolves around a demented man who is able to isolate Cape Cod from the mainland with only the assistance of eight others. I think that the author has an agenda of discrediting the competence and the morality of the US Government. One example of this incompetence and lack of morality revolves around the ability of the protagonist to steal a vast amount of weaponized Anthrax.
A fun read, as long as you don’t question the impossibility of one person to fund and organize such a completely successful terrorist attack especially after the many terrorist attacks experienced by the US.
Action and adventure, natural disasters, terrorists, romance, old ladies....what more could you want?
I got wrapped up in this story from the start. I liked that although it has a central plot, there were several sub-stories to add to the excitement. I was surprised so many of the bad guys were killed off so early in the story, without atoning for their misdeeds. It was easy to get to know and like the heroine, Sara, and the mysterious good man, Marcus. Ann was my favorite character. Hope I see her again? I enjoyed the book, though it wrapped up a bit too quickly.
Bad stuff is happening on Cape Cod. First the bridges explode, the harbors blow up and everyone is trapped on the island. Then a hurricane comes in. And the guy that blew up the bridges and harbors decides that he’s going to throw anthrax into the mix so that everyone dies. There were a lot of diverse characters and they all want to kill people for different reasons. The relationship between Ann, an old lady who lives by herself, and Doyle, a crook, was cute. I have a feeling they’ll be in contact with each other for a long time.
Deadly Shore makes The Perfect Storm seem like a bedtime story. It’s 4th of July weekend, Cape Cod is packed and, within a short period of time, every way to get off the Cape no longer exists. A terrorist has deadly plans for the residents, and the President doesn’t have the courage to stand up to his advisors and do what he knows is right. This book held my attention from the beginning, and I had a hard time putting it down. Andrew Cunningham has put together a masterpiece with this one.
What an interesting novel. A Thriller to be sure but much more. The characters are well thought out and the plot is so believable! With all that is going on in the world today, unfortunately something like this is possible. From terrorists to hurricanes, Marcus and Sara have their hands full. The bad guys also have their hands full. Will the bad guys get away, will the terrorists get caught, will people on Cape Cod survive? Read this thought provoking novel and read how it all comes together.
Deadly Shore is a good thriller about a planned terrorist attack that is complicated by both nature and human incompetence. Sara, an ex-cop and Marcus, a CIA operator, team up after phase 1 of the attack strands hundreds of thousands of people on Cape Cod when every bridge, dock and airstrip are bombed and the terrorists demand tribal land and money to not release a weaponized microbe to kill as many as possible. The hurricane makes the book unique and moody, a fun read overall. 4/5 stars, recommended for any fan of crime thrillers!
well thought out story line with believable, Somewhat flawed but likable characters.
Fast paced with lots of action and realistic characters. Good plot and very descriptive story melding an oncoming hurricane, a disillusioned young chemist with an agenda and enough anthrax to kill off an entire island, a little old pistol packing octogenarian lady with an attitude and a woebegone thief who just wants to stay alive long enough to enjoy the fruits of his profession. Add a CIA operative turned private eye and a competent,
