3.5 actually. For a simple reason. The hero'es reluctance to let go of his past and embrace the new love of his life is fine. But it drags on and on. I got tired seeing him walk away a zillion times from the poor girl who keeps asking him about his tragic past!

Lets summarize. She is an outback rancher's daughter - pampered, feisty but with a heart of gold. She has the hots for a worker in her estate - a brooding loner - the hero of course.

One day when he seems particularly distressed, she offers him comfort. Comfort of the M&B kind - a quick tumble in bed! Haven't heard of this brand of comfort in any other universe!

Anyway, the guy's distress goes from bad to worse after the night of the tumble. Reason ? Its the 5th year death anniversary of his wife #1 and kid.

You know what happens next. No surprises there. The girl is pregnant, the guy offer a marriage of convenience. Blah blah.

The thing that pulls this story from ordinary to note-worthy is the girl. She is an aspiring vet, a true outback girl. But the unplanned pregnancy pushes her life into a roller coaster. The girl is already struggling to cope with break in studies, restrictions on outdoor activities, overt pressure to accept a marriage of convenience and family coercion of the affectionate but stifling kind.

The hero cares for her in the physical sense, like a nurse. But never admits to any emotional bond. So given all this mess, she does a great job in sticking out for her happiness. She refuses to marry for reasons other than love.

And that does come, after pushing and prodding the hero several times. She forces the guy to go back to the life he ran away from, face his demons. He does that, and gets back - a free man.

3 stars for the story, extra 0.5 for the gritty girl !!

Jake Connors o John Jacob Sutherland:

My goodness this was one angsty read. I enjoyed the depth and complexity of the character Jake. His grief was realistic and complex, but still James did not shy away from also showing how the damaging effects his self-destructive behavior was to those around him.

I also enjoyed Layla's perspective, but I definitely felt that Jake took up more of the spotlight. It could get painful and a bit repetitive at times with Jake working through his demons and pushing Layla away. Honestly, I am not so sure that it was healthy for Layla to keep trying to connect with him after being shut out so many times. The ending was sweet and hopeful, but I felt that we left at the end only at the beginning of a really long journey towards healing. He still had a lot to learn about how to handle his grief now that he was willing/able to face it. Honestly, he would benefit from therapy, but that would be unlikely because they live in such a remote area.

That was another thing - I liked that Jake's tragic backstory makes sense within the setting. Sure, it could have worked if the book was set in a city, but the tragedy is all the more disturbing for its utter believability in an extremely rural area without good access to medicine. I would be interested to learn more about Australia's flying doctors system.

cw: depression, self-hatred/self-destructive behavior, death of a pregnant woman, death of an infant, premature birth, miscarriage scare
