Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies, even as a little girl. When I was a toddler, my parents would read stories to me over and over. I would hear them so often that I had the books memorized and could recite the story word by word.

My favorite genres are fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary romance. So of course that's what I'm inclined to write.

I have a husband, two young daughters, and a mini Australian Shepherd. I've lived in Tennessee the majority of my life and love the state.

I'm extremely addicted to caffeine and enjoy drinking coffee and lattes.

He chuckled, though pain reflected in his eyes. “Being with you makes the hurt more bearable. You’re the rainbow after the storm.”

EEK! ALL THE FIVE STARS IN THE WORLD FOR THIS GLORIOUS JEWEL OF A BOOK!!!

*also see what I did there? 🤣

This is my third time rereading this entire trilogy, and I am still in love with the characters and story. After having a terrible experience with the blatant and false romance that Always In December had, it was so refreshing to read a story that I loved and had laughter in it.

It’s basically about wolf shifters and your typical supernatural romance storyline, but the characters, events, emotions, and everything just pull me in.

Every time I reread scenes between Jewel and Killian, they feel so genuine and real. I love them so much, and I have to say, out of all the couples and fated mates Jen has written, Jewel and Killian will always be the most realest and organic couple she has ever written about.

Their patience, passion, understanding, and respect for another just trumps all the relationships in Shadow City, because of how dedicated Jewel and Kilian are to one another. Both of them have pain from their past, and through one another, they learn to heal and love again.

”That you’re with the person who was made for you, giving you balance.” His other hand intertwined with mine. “The world is full of horrible things, and there’s always a reason not to be happy. But misery disregards all the good things in the world to.”

Jewel has to be the best protagonist and heroine Jen has written that I love with my whole heart. She’s laid back, she’s honest, she knows her limits. She is loyal and protective, and still has flaws that we can relate to. My love for her character just grows with each book in the series.

Also, unlike some of the other books in the Shadow City series, this one has top notch action. It opens with a bang and doesn’t stop until the very end. Each book is like this. I loved the combat and fight scenes, they were really nice to read about. In fantasy books with action, fight scenes will always be my favorite.

There are so many reasons why this is the best series I have liked from Jen and the best in Shadow City, but overall, it’s one of my favorite books as well.

This book is kind of rough. It was one of those books that you're 40% through and wondering wait what that's it? How am I already 40% through I feel like we're still on the first scene. It's missing a lot of meat. There's just not enough time spent to really develop things. As a result all the characters come off a little one dimensional. I sort of saw how Jewels perception of Killian changed over the course of the book but... Not really?

However, the overall premise is fine and it reads a little like my guilty pleasure bc I'm a sucker for the fated mate werewolves situation. So I'll continue reading to pass time and I feel like we're just getting started, but it's not one of the greats. I think the high ratings are mainly due to the low review count. And it seems like I've stumbled into the middle of a series so I have a feeling there's a lot of books before this about all the other couples who appear in this.

This is the first book I have read by Jen L Grey and I absolutely loved it! I loved the action, loved the drama and loved the romance. The characters and world building Jen put behind this series is phenomenal. I really enjoyed reading not only the main characters story but about the side characters who all seem to have their own stories as well. Now I need to go back and start from the beginning and read their stories as well because I just have to know all about the Shadow City World. Jen has a way with words and captures her readers from beginning to end and I can't wait to see what Killian and Jewel have in store for us in the next installment.

"You are the rainbow after the storm"...............This little sentence just made me melt.

We finally get to meet Jewel (Mila's daughter, Sterlyn & Cyrus' cousin), when she comes back from a party she finds her Grandfather's entire pack missing along with her mother who was visiting. She sees on tv the video of Killian coming out to the world and telling them that paranormals exist. When Jewel meets up with Sterlyn and the rest of the gang, she is sooo angry and blames Killian for her missing family members, and with that encounter, they come to realise that they are Fated Mates.

Jewel is such a blend of her parents and we can see how Mila's actions had impacted her aswell. Once the gang rallies and they find out where the missing pack is, the time for war has begun...but there is betrayal from a past hurt that comes back to haunt someone and the consequences are deadly.

This book ends on a cliffhanger. It is action packed, romance, mystery....all the good stuff. I have read all the books in the previous series that is a part of the world building. You could start this book and enter the series/world from here but its worth starting from the beginning as you get to witness the character growth and find out more about the characters.

I received this review copy for an honest and unbiased review.

I should have stopped at the part where grown men were arguing over who would sit where in the car but I was feeling too lazy to search for another book.

Then we got the the first real fight.. and holy shit was it a mess. Everyone did stupid things to try and “protect”each other. Read: Person 1 sees person 2 *might* be in danger so person 1 makes themselves a target instead, then person 2 sees person 1 is in danger so person 2 jumps in the way of person 1 and person 1 tries to jump in the way of person 2 and so on.

Literally, that is their whole battle strategy and it goes on and on. Oh and don’t forget that everyone will be demeaning the MC *for her protection*

I quit when Killian was literally bleeding out and dying but wanted our FMC to be healed first even though none of her wounds were fatal, and all of his combined were extremely fatal.

It gets 2 stars instead of 1 because the writing wasn’t bad, it was only the story that sucked

DNF 36%

Unfortunately I just didn’t connect with the story and especially not with the FMC. It simply didn’t catch my interest and I didn’t feel any chemistry between her and Killian.

All the moments of her acting dumb, not understanding and putting the pieces together just felt stupid. “They must have meant…” “it almost sounded like he was coming to say…” and so on. I’m guessing they know a bit about fated mates, yet she’s completely oblivious to all the signs.

🎧 Audiobook narration: The narrator’s male voices were over exaggerated and I couldn’t get past that.

DNF at 56%. I usually really like this authors books but this story was incredibly muddy. The MC was unrelatable and insufferable. The plot was confusing and the characters were all over the place.

Killian gets his story and it starts out with a big bang! He finds his fated mate when she comes seeking help to get her grandfather’s pack back. Jewel hates him at first because he outed the shifters which may or may not have lead to the pack being taken. Killian and the gang are all for helping her find her grandfather. They were taken by humans and they are starting to experiment on them, but they are able to break them out. Watch out for the doozie at the end, it will leave you wanting the next book in your hands right this minute.

I received an ARC for this book. Killian finds his mate! I'm so happy to get to see him be happy. He is one of the best! Now it's time to go through the trials. I'm still a little uncertain about Jewel, but I know I will love her by the end. I love seeing all the other couples from the past series. They are all such a great team.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire

It's finally here. The Shadow City Universe is big following the same core group of loyal friends as they add to their group. Killian has been there from the beginning and I've been waiting for his book and now it's finally here. Shattered Wolf is the first book in the Shadow City Silver Mate series and as usual with Shadow City, it was a great read.

Killian finds his mate in Jewel, who isn't just any silver wolf she's Sterlyn's and Cyrus's cousin, Bart's daughter. For the most part, I like Jewel, Bart has taught her well. She's a critical thinker, a strategist like Sterlyn, protective, and willing to take action. Jewel is very much like Bart but she's also her mother's daughter. Although she hates to admit she's anything like Mila, Jewel is very reactive and lets her anger get the best of her. Sure she has a cool coping mechanism, playing classical music in her head to keep her emotions in check but sometimes it doesn't work and she gets irrational, reminding me of her mother. Overall, when she's not irritating me I like Jewel and she fits well with the group.

This book really spotlighted Killian, I got to know him better and I didn't think that was possible, including the fact that he's still living with the pain of his family's death. Killian is great as usual but Jewel is determined to make him the bad guy and Kill is feeling guilt over his part in exposing supernaturals. However, Killian is handling things with grace and is extremely careful and respectful of Jewel. He takes everything she gives him and is still willing to stand by her side. I've always loved Killian, he has always been a great guy and this book just proves it even more. He's one of my favorites and I'm so happy he has a chance at love.

Gods, this group can't catch a break. Attack after attack, they keep fighting, however, until now the only enemies they've been dealing with were all supernaturals. Now humans are aware of supernaturals and have become another problem for Sterlyn and the gang to deal with when they attack a pack connected to the group. I'm talking about some black-ops type of stuff with high-grade weapons, well-trained people, and a secret base. This story is told from Jewel's perspective and after dealing with the death of her father and the recent attack it makes sense that this is an emotional book, which helped me connect to Jewel more. Of course, the usual gang is very involved in the story, and I loved it.

Silver Mate is another great start to a Shadow City series. The story was high-octane with dramatic scenes like car chases, running through the woods, stakeouts, and more. There was the emotional turmoil with mate drama, Jewel being the new kid on the block, and missing family. I loved Silver Mate, a shocking revelation was revealed at the end and now I'm very curious about where Jen is gonna take the story next.

I liked it alright, but it was really slow. Everything happens within like a week? And we read every detail of every day except for the “days that passed in a blur”. Most of the book was the main character fighting the mate bond, so when she gave in it was a relief. Even though it was kind of anticlimactic.

Then the rescue mission happened within a few hours after they mate, but of course… the author wants to extend this into a series, so there’s a little twist.

I read the whole thing, but since they mated I don’t really care about continuing. I know the next two books are going to be a bunch of fighting and I know it’s going to be really slow and boring based off of this book having the most exciting thing happen in a boring way. 🫣

I might want to read more or actually recommend this book if the main character actually had more communication with her mate. They don’t even know each other and are professing love to one another. They had one medium long conversation about the worst thing they think about themselves just to ensure the other knew what they were getting into before mating. But that’s it. They never spend more than a couple minutes with each other until they decide to accept the bond and do the deed. Lol we don’t even know how old Killian is.

And there’s no explanation on what being a silver wolf really means. I mean, I know it means they’re part angel and they’re stronger. But what else? Why were they hiding so much if that’s it? What does the angel part do? Just give them a boost? Maybe these are questions answered in another series or something, but if so why is this series separate? At least give a description of some things in a prologue or a recap of sorts for those that pick this series up thinking it’s its own thing.

Silver wolves, descendants of an Angel, were more powerful than other shifters and had been hunted for eons, spending their lives moving around to keep hidden from outsiders when possible. They lived by the rule that they would harm neither humans nor supernatural beings, they were the protectors of life. But war had come to them in the form of demons and brought them to the attention of humans, telling others where they could be found. There were others, mostly humans, who coveted the power of the shifters and would go to any means to find a way to acquire the secrets of shifting. And so, begins a new world where supernaturals are hunted and they will have to fight for their freedom. After Jewel’s father, the Alpha of the silver wolves, died trying to save others, her Mother Mila, went on a rampage, blaming those for whom her husband had died. She made life so miserable that Jewel had to get away in order to sort out her pain and find a way to better cope with her loss. What would it mean to their world?
For months she lived with her grandfather’s pack, hours from her home, until one night a friend convinced her to go to the city for a night out, upon their return to the encampment only silence greeted them. As they searched the nearby cabins, they could find no sign of anyone, no signs of struggle. Something was very, very wrong. After noticing the television was still on running a news report Heather and Jewel turned up the volume to listen. The man in the video would have grabbed anyone’s attention his was gorgeous, but when she realized he was a shifter speaking to humans about the reality of supernatural beings living around them, she realized they needed to get away fast and find help.
But as they left the encampment a black SUV came barreling down the road after them, they were being followed, the driver tried to run them off the road. Barely managing to escape with their lives, they headed for the new home of the silver wolves. Jewel’s terror turned to full blown anger when they finally reached Shadow City and one of the first people she saw was the man, Killian, from the news video. It was all his fault, why was he here with Sterlyn, her Alpha, and other supernaturals? She blamed him for the disappearance of her family and the pack. Even as her mind told her she despised the traitor, she was strangely drawn to him. Why was he watching her with such a strange look of longing? She told Sterlyn about finding the empty encampment and the SUV that tried to run them off the road. Finding the pack members would require Eliza’s, a witch, help but to assist she needed something tangible from at least one of the shifters. They would have to return to the encampment, get in and get out fast for someone fear that those who had followed them would be back with others. Together with Sterlyn, Griffin, her mate, Heather, Jewel and several others they would drive back to the cabins and find what they could. Killian insisted on going along on the journey, much to Jewel’s consternation.
They’d almost reached the encampment when they saw the smoke and the bright glow from a fire. Most of the cabins were a blaze and falling in unsalvageable by the time they reached them. Jewel and the others knew that time was short, they had to try to find something they could use in their search and get out before the humans who had torched to cabins came back. But it didn’t take long to realize once again they had run out of time. The humans came with guns and tranquilizer rifles. It didn’t take a genius to realize that the humans wanted to capture them but wouldn’t hesitate to kill them if they couldn’t. The fight to escape would cost them, they would lose a couple of their comrades before they succeeded to break away and escape.
The story begins with a tale of treachery, hatred towards supernatural beings, hits the ground running with action, blends in romance that blooms even in the midst of terror and fights to bring about justice for everyone. This paranormal trilogy is full of action, suspense, romance and edge of chair terror. Jen L. Grey doesn’t hesitate to make hard decisions by creating situations where bad things happen to good people in their struggle to remain free. The supernatural world comes together with angels, demons, vampires, shifters and more. She has built a world where there is good and evil on both sides, humans and supernatural beings. Peopled with characters whose lives are very different from each other while they draw strength from their diversity, find mates with whom they can forge loving bonds and join forces to fight for their freedom to live in peace. The story unfolds with light touches of humor, sadness, pain, death and uncertainty in a world ruled by fear, greed, and hatred. But there is also hope.
For a time, I felt like I’d stepped into the world of Indiana Jones, wherever you went you ran into trouble, with no clear end in sight, and an army of elite fighters without mercy, interspersed with people you will come to admire and for whom you are rooting to come out on top. I had a hard time sitting still reading it, I found myself with the tale in hand pacing the floor, laughing, crying, and scared for those held in captivity. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy paranormal situations, romantic suspense and action stories. There are some twists and turns so don’t get too comfortable, you may be surprised at what happens next.
This part of the story ends in a cliffhanger that may leave you feeling like someone pushed you off a high ledge only to catch you and secure you in a net. Just know that the next edition won’t be far behind.

2.5-3 Stars - I honestly can’t decide. I read the whole trilogy though, mostly because I’m in a book slump.

You ever watch a thriller movie and the good guys think they killed the bad guys but they never really check so they pop back out when they least expect it? And you’re just like screaming at the TV “why didn't you make sure he was dead or kill him when he was down!?” Yea that was this whole series in a nutshell.

The heros never want to kill the bad guys because they are trying to prove they aren’t monsters…which is admirable expect when your friends are being kidnapped, tortured, experimented on, and killed. Like just kill them already and save everyone all the drama later. Honestly the biggest issue I had with these books was how weak the supernaturals seemed. Maybe I am just used to reading other books where the wolves, vamps, dragons, and witches have crazy powers but these heros were all struggling to fight against humans - who granted had guns and were trained fighters, plus the heros tried to stay in human form as much as possible not to “scare” the humans etc, but they just felt a bit weak to me. Like I said I think I am just used to shifters being so strong and able to really just destroy whoever they are fighting in other books. Also, they are literally always fighting in these books so if you’re not into fight scenes these prob aren’t the books for you. I found myself skimming quite a bit since some of it felt so repetitive all the fighting and “not winning”. Also the romance and steam was very tame (in my opinion), maybe if it was a bit spicer it would have kept me engaged and more entertained.

Overall not the worst thing I have ever read. I’m prob being picky because I am in a book slump and this wasn’t really what I wanted but I couldn’t really settle on anything else either.

We finally get Killian's story! The guy definitely deserves to find his fated mate and with this story he finally goes. Meet Jewel. She is the daughter of Bart. The silver wolf alpha who was the uncle to Sterlyn and Cyrus, but died protecting them. Jewel has been away at her grandparents' pack since losing her dad to deal with her grief. Almost ready to return to the silver wolf pack, she returns back to her grandparents' pack land with her friend to discover the entire pack is missing! They have no idea what happened. How could a whole pack be missing? Or worse, taken? And just as they are looking for clues, they discover not only have humans been here, but a shifter as announced to the world that the supernatural world is real. Before they can digest that, they are chased by humans and luckily escape. Jewel heads home to the silver wolf pack for help. In doing so she meets Killian aka the person who's responsible for telling the world about them and if the yanking feeling and her wolf's sudden interest is right, her fated mate. But how can she be the one who put her family in danger? Killian has his reasons, but he will do whatever it takes to get Jewel's family back and prove to her that she is it for him. Finding his fated mate is everything to him and he won't lose her before ever truly knowing her. Jewel wants to remain angry at him but how can she he is constantly proving to be the most patient, understanding, and all around good guy? Loved this pairing! Like I said Killian deserves a happy ending. And this is the first time we really see Jewel and she is just another great character to add to this group! Looking forward to seeing how the rest of their story plays out.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

This is a great start to a new series by one of my fave authors. We follow Jewel a powerful silver wolf who has spent most of her life hiding to keep her rare pack safe as they used to be hunted. Just as the pack starts to foray out things take a bad turn. While staying with her grandparents pack she comes home after a night out to find the entire pack missing with no signs of foul play. It's like they just up and walked off all at once. Before she can really look into things a shifter she has never met outs of the paranormal to the rest of the world. You can imagine how this goes over but it just gets worse when she meets him as she discovers that he is her fated mate. Talk about not getting along. He has a lot of ground to cover before he can make things right which leads to one doozy of an adventure as they try to figure what is going on, who is doing it, and saving all that they can. Makes for a fast paced emotional read as it all plays out and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

I am a sucker for a werewolf story. I did enjoy this first book in the series but I’m not sure if I will continue the series. This book’s storyline is Jules trying to save her captured family from humans that are experimenting on them. In order for her to do that, she teams up with other werewolves, angels, demons, witches, and vampires. If that sounds like a lot….it is. There were so many characters in this book that it got confusing at times. There is a lot of action in this book, which is usually good but reading about Jules thinking she is so strong because she is a rare silver wolf was exhausting, especially because she was constantly running towards danger and getting super hurt. Honestly, Jules was not my favorite lead character. Through this book she tried to fight the mate bond and she was just jerking the guy around because one moment she was kissing him and the next, she was pushing him away.
Also, this book ends in a massive cliffhanger….like in the middle of an attack cliffhanger.
I’ve seen other reviews where people state that others books from this author are better. So I may need to try one of those.

Shattered Wolf is the first book in the Shadow City: Silver Mate series. We finally get to read Killian & his mate Jewel's story. While each series is a separate story and can be read alone, I highly recommend reading the whole Shadow City World of books.

Jewel is a silver wolf that struggled with the death of her father so she chose to visit her grandparents pack to deal with the grief. One-night changes her whole world. Regret and grief will have to wait because now she has to face the reality that humans know about supernaturals and it may have to do with her grandparents' pack missing.

Killian and Jewel have the not so typical issues with coming to terms with being mates. Read to find out how Killian and Jewel (with the help from friends) handle her grandfather's missing pack, being mates, and the unknown enemy. Be prepared for twists that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. There is suspense, action, new friends, unknown enemies and of course love.

Jewel and Heather returned from a girl’s outing and found the entire pack gone! Unaware of what’s happened lately, they glance at the TV and see Killian, admit shifter existence. Jewel decides her family is missing because of Killian’s admission. After linking with a pack member, the women head to Shadow City. On the road, Jewel and Heather are forced off the road

The second Jewel and Killian had an eye meeting, her heart flips, she’s also as disagreeable and surly as possible; Killian’s aware he’s met his fated mate. The first order of business is to find and rescue the missing pack. And the other first order of business is the mating dance and the other first order of business because there always is.

Though this wasn’t a bad outing, this reader would’ve preferred either more Killian or a shorter read rather than copious repetition from Jewel. Also, the villain of the piece was sinister enough to be a threat even off the page, and the story and action pieces read well for my taste. But the cliffie, not so much.

Jewel has taken a sabbatical from her after her father was killed to get control of herself. On a night out her world gets turned upside-down when her grandfather's pack goes missing. As they are looking around the TV shows them the supernaturals been ousted and her anger spikes and she needs to find out the truth. When she gets to her pack and sees Killian she has to fight her two sides cause of what she she feels. As they try to find out what happen to the pack they start to see what and who is behind it, but the fight within herself is making it difficult for her to do what needs to be done will they be able to survive and save the pack.
Holy crap did this book pack a punch of emotions, twists, turns, and what one will do to save family. All the. Characters we know and love are back and with new faces and a whole bunch of new problems I was sucked right and left wanting so much more. Jewel and Killian's story has just begun and I so can't wait to read what happens next.

AMAZING read!

I have waited patiently for this book to release. Killian has been a favorite of mine throughout this series. To see him find his mate in Jewel, a silver wolf, is great! Although, she fights it. She blames him for her mom and grandparents and the whole pack going missing. All because he went on tv and announced shifters were real. We find out why he did it and its heartbreaking. I love how he cares so much for the people he loves. Sterlyn and the gang are all together, to help them escape from captivity. Can they save the pack? What's the reason they were captured to begin with? Does Jewel accept Killian as her fated mate? Hmm. I know I would. Lol. A must read!!

Must read

This was such a good book! Jewel is a silver wolf trying to come to terms with the death of her dad. Trying not to be overwhelmed with all the anger like her mother she moves to her grandparents pack. When her and her friend Heather come home from an evening out to find her grandparents whole pack and her mother missing she must seek help from her former pack. Asking her Cousin Sterlyn the alpha of the silver wolf's pack to help she meets all kinds of other supernaturals and Killian. Will she ever be able to forgive Killian's role in the war? Can they save the pack? And ohhh the cliffhanger it leaves of on....must read 2 next

I have finally had the chance to jump into this author’s work. And looks like I need to check out previous books to see how some standout secondary characters found their HEA.

Jewel and Killian are fated mates though she is stubborn as hell but then again he announced to the world supernaturals existed. Oh what is a wolf shifter supposed to do? Well in her case, she keeps fighting that mate pull though she’s having very impure thoughts. No time to dwell on that when wolf shifters are being kidnapped by an evil entity which really makes the story even better.

Slow burn but oh when these two come together it’s magical.

Again and again...

This far into the Shadow City books everything is getting pretty repetitive. This author's formula is to draw out solidifying the bond in the first book and then keep letting everyone ALMOST succeed until the end of the third or fourth book. The part I like is the H and H at least usually fight their enemies together. Finally in this book there are shifters who don't care about nudity--that was an odd comfort but the author also made it comedic. Moving on to the next book but not very excited about it. Again, secondary characters having more of a voice might keep things more interesting than just struggles for struggles sake.

Haunted Past

When an entire pack, including her mom and grandparents, disappeared Jewel is forced to seek help from her pack in Shadow City. Her only companion is Heather a wolf from her grandparents pack that her mom asked to take Jewel out for a night. When she gets to Shadow City, she finds more than just her pack. She finds her mate, Killian, the man who outed supernaturals to the human population. The reason her family was taken, or was it? Her mother, Mila, has a haunted past that is also entangled in this mess.

interesting

I was immediately irritated with Jewel because she immediately made a huge assumption that it was Killian and Killian alone who put her family in danger. Then she resists the attraction but wants to attack all the women who come near him. I applaud her quick thinking on getting herself and Heather out of danger and seeking help from her pack who in her grief she’d left. Her mother certainly start will text when i am not driving enough crap during her life span evidenced by the past books and what up next.
