Momo Ayase strikes up an unusual friendship with her school's UFO fanatic, whom she nicknames "Okarun" because he has a name that is not to be said aloud. While Momo believes in spirits, she thinks aliens are nothing but nonsense. Her new friend, meanwhile, thinks the exact opposite. To settle matters, the two set out to prove each other wrong—Momo to a UFO hotspot and Okarun to a haunted tunnel! What unfolds next is a beautiful story of young love…and oddly horny aliens and spirits?
I have one very specific issue with this title: it plays sexual assault for laughs. Is there something ridiculous about a yokai named Turbo Granny stealing a boy's penis? Sure, I might give you that. But there's nothing funny about how upset he is about that or about aliens attempting to rape a teenage girl with their robo-dongs, no matter how silly they look. Nothing actually happens, but it left a bad taste in my mouth, although in all fairness, the content label does mention "horny aliens," so if you read those (and you should, largely because Viz has a lot of fun with theirs), you can't say that you weren't warned.
That distasteful (and recurring) element aside, this is a pretty standard goofy shounen caper. Momo and Okarun set out to convince each other that their favorite paranormal thing is real only to succeed far too well, and now they have to fight evil randy aliens and Okarun is possessed by Turbo Granny. Momo's young-looking grandma's around to sort of help, and things just keep escalating, both in text and art. If the aforementioned jokes don't bother you, you'll probably find plenty to like here.
I kept going back and forth between 3 star or 4. Listen, this shit is DUMB but in a mostly fun way. The boy doesn't believe in ghost but believes in aliens. The girl believes in ghost but not aliens. They each dare each other to go to places that have aliens/ghost. Neither thinks they'll see anything but the boy gets cursed by a spirit who steals his dick. The girl is kidnapped by aliens with metal dicks who want to use the girl for disgusting things.
See here's the thing. This series feel like the author just had a idea and made shit up as he goes. But it does keep you guessing, some hilarious dialogue. The fights also can be pretty epic with solid art.
There's a few too many creepy moments. Our main girl gets her clothes ripped off by thr aliens and almost raped. Then there's creepy panty shot later where rhe ghost lifts her up by leg and long shots of her crotch.
So yeah there's some scenes that rubbed me wrong way. But at the same time this series is crazy fucking weird and lots of surprises so it keeps it entertaining. I'll check out another volume.
Hysterical slice of life/shonen/science fiction/fantasy realism/horror comedy.
Reads like if Rumiko Takahashi and Masaaki Nakayama fused with Haruki Murakami creating an outlandish and unique artistic vision. Brilliant art.
Extremely zany, very addictive, can be surprisingly disturbing despite its often lighthearted nature.
Love the character designs, the chemistry between the leads that the artist conveys in the few understated and quiet moments. Also the rhythm of the panel work is incredible. Full of maniacal tempo changes that are dizzying and overwhelming. It's like the comic book equivalent of a death metal drummer turning his double bass into soup.
Pre-review: I decide to see what all the fuss is about.
(1) The artwork seriously is not my cup of tea, I found the lines work annoying too. However I must admit the characters are cutely drawn and the artwork is effective.
(2) Somehow the male author seems to think it is perfectly okay to draw a school girl wearing a school uniform skirt that barely cover the top of her thighs, come on it's the 21th century already. it's not cute.
(3) The infamous attempted rape scene is very much there, and it's annoying.
(4.1) Warning: if attempted rape and a school girl being kidnapped, drugged, forcefully stripped naked and having to fight off her would-be rapists in only her bra and panties is not the sense of humour that you can appreciate, I will recommend you to stay away from this series.
(4.2) Plus did I mention that mere minutes and hours after being almost gang raped by some fucking aliens the girl just carries on and acts like it's business as usual? I mean I don't expect her to start screaming, crying and tearing her hair off instantly but how come she seems unaffected for most parts, she doesn't even shows any need for comfort, for sense of safety and she seems to have no need for any time and space for recovery?
(4.3) I am serious, if rape being played off as a joke is not your thing, then don't read.
(5) I don't really understand why we are stuck with this same old same old ' cool sexy girl with a shy nerd wearing a pair of glasses' and ' shy boy falls for the first cool sexy girl who pays attention to him' trappings all over again.
(6) A panties shot with the girl's skirt being hiked up when she is unconscious, how predictable.
(7,1) even the grandma is sexualized too, *facepalm*
(7.2) well...the spirit Turbo Granny just decides to take the male lead's...private part away when she cursed him. Looks like it's once again, sex joke for the sake of sex joke.
(8) Overall I can't take the story very seriously, and the author clearly isn't taking spirits, aliens and any real life issues ( sexual violence, problems faced by youths just to name a few) seriously neither.
I will give the next book a try, not getting my hopes up though.
I was going to compare Dan Da Dan‘s (good) ridiculousness to that of Chainsaw Man, and then I read the authors note at the end of this volume, which mentions that Tatsu was actually one of the assistants to Fujimoto on Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch…
This series is plain weird so far, but there’s also a strange charm to it? Momo and Okarun are a lead pairing I can already tell I’m going to love, especially if their alien/spirit hobbies lead them towards a romance with each other. The art style is also amazing, arguably even the strongest part of this manga so far. This seems like it’ll be a fun story to read when in need of something light or comedic!
This series has been all over my Goodreads feed this year, with several different friends ripping through the volumes. FOMO started kicking in, so I thought I'd give the first volume a try.
And it's a pretty solid paranormal dramedy, with two school kids -- middle school? high school? I dunno -- getting mixed up with yokai and aliens for some wacky yet dangerous adventures. There's some fan service in the early chapters with the underage girl that's discomfiting, but it seems to taper off toward the end of the book.
The characters are fun, and I'll probably try a few more volumes sometime, but there are already 20 volumes and counting, and I'm not sure that's a mountain I'm ready to scale.

this was fun and weird, i will admit i watched the animation first but i’m glad i’m finally reading it! got a great art style and i love all the paranormal and alien involvement. just a really odd story but with a lot of character. the only thing i’m not keen on was all the nudity and ?sa, that was not necessary lol
This was weird and fun. It’s not on the level of my manga faves (Junji Ito and Spy X Family) but it was a good time, and I’ll be continuing to read the series. It does lose a star for the weird sexualization of its characters and the outdated slang used by the translator.
On today's episode of level of discomfort 💯 squared: a chaotic AF manga about junk-stealing spirits, horny aliens, and two high-schoolers trying to navigate it all. I don't know if I hate it or love it, seriously. I'll refrain from rating it until I am a few more volumes in.
👹 The manga is about two teenagers who fight spirits and aliens (yes, you read it right: both spirits and aliens). 👽 The content is quite raw, e.g., aliens legit attempted to rape the MC, Momo, in the first volume (yes, you read it right; yes, it's disgusting and not adequately addressed) 👹 The grandma is a hot chick wearing basically just a cardigan (yes, you read it right). 👽 And the dude, Okarun, lost his junk to a spirit called "turbo granny," and then when he got it back, he kinda got it back without his balls... Like ah? (yes, you read it right). 👹 All in all, the manga is so F chaotic it actually works (or it seems to work) 🤷🏻♀️
TW: sexual assault (on page); nudity; slut shaming
Upon reread I have no new notes, I love this series 💗
One of my absolute favourite series publishing right now. Dandadan is VERY unique in what it’s doing and the plot it funny and serious at the same time. This series really pushes the boundaries of how it can tell it’s story (but it doesn’t push them too far thank God)
[volumes 1-4, chapters 1-32] It’s shocking how interesting and dynamic the art in this is, when it’s mostly just a light-hearted X-Files teen sex comedy with some extremely tacky fan service thrown in. It’s a cute story, but I’m old enough that I don’t have a huge void for high school romances in my life, and also I’m not like….SUper impressed by the crotch shots. Like……it’s all FINE, but the art is obviously stronger than the writing.
If you’re looking for a fun action/comedy manga, though, this is 100% worth checking out. The first chapter did NOT hook me even remotely, but I’d kind of formed an opinion by chapter 13, and IMO it finally steadies out in volume 4: once they start really leaning into the freak characters, and you’ve gotten past the worst of the “plot-irrelevant full frontal nudity in episode one of an HBO show”.
This looks like something that Fujimoto (the creator of "Chainsaw Man") would write.
It's VERY strange and entertaining (just how i like my manga @_@).
But most importantly, the grandmother is hot (and i don't know why but when i saw her mu kujtua artstyle i "Burn the Witch", dukej sikur kishte dal nga ajo manga).
Whilst reading the first chapter, all I could think was... What the f am I reading. But after that chapter it became really interesting. Can't wait to read more.
This is fucking weird and kinda funny but also deeply unfunny in the depictions of attempted assault and constant sexualization of all the female characters. I get it, but also BOOOOO. Eh, whatever. Glad that my curiosity is now sated on this one.
2/2.5 stars. Meh. So slow. The art was stellar, but no amount of great art can make up for how much this story did not connect with me. It had the imagery of shonen I do not care for with suggestive female positioning that is too lurid and objectifying for me. I can get by when there is more humor or interesting story, but weird pacing and sluggish development just didn't connect with me. The added objectifying and women both as sexual objects for the male gaze is just a big ugh for me. The shoving of body parts in an awkward way to be front and center is just ugh and looks uncomfortable...unless it's like gangum style with humor. Anyway, did not enjoy, not for me, but woah, that art is amazing.
listen. I don’t stand by any of the graphic scenes (which were indeed traumatizing), but I am committed to reading the story so here we are 😔 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
(and what if I said this kinda depicts how creepy the Ice Planet Barbarians scenario without consent is actually horrific— [gunshot])
I hate shounen so I don't know why I picked this up. The premise is great, but the humor skews too 13-year-old boy for my taste and the way Momo keeps getting sexualized is honestly repulsive. Which is a shame, because the art is fantastic and just so much fun to look at.
