After nightmares begin in the small town of Custer Falls, Montana, in 1992, it’ll be thirty years before they end.

Just outside of Custer Falls, something is sleeping. Life in the small town was never ideal, but it was safe, quiet, and predictable. After Wes Henson and his friends' field trip to Bloodtooth Caverns, all of that changes.

All they did was stray off the path. They didn't expect to break their bones and discover an ancient relic. But once it's in Wes's hands, he's the one that has to put it back.

Until he does, the town's nightmares are no longer harmless. The good side of your conscience may go quiet as the devil on your shoulder speaks up. Children fall into comas, while adults are torn to pieces in their sleep.

If Wes and his friends want to survive, they'll have to conquer the waking world and the dreamscape.

Because when this evil is awake, no one's dreams are safe.

I have to preface my review with a disclaimer that I have ADHD and normally do not read such long works of fiction so please take the first part my review with a grain of salt if your attention span isn't about the same as that of a squirrel that has consumed an uncalled for amount of coffee.
I struggled with keeping track of the timeline due to the going back and forth in time and the multiple POV characters (though it was identified clearly when the story switched back and forth).
That being said, I was impressed with how Hitz managed to make such a sprawling story feel oppressive and heavy as well as urgent.
The storytelling reminded me of Masterton's but without the quirks that aged poorly (in other words Masterton but better). I think it's also important to point out that this book is almost all story, there's not a lot of time spent on descriptions and setting up spaces and characters, it shows you who the characters are through was they do. Di is the one character which is sort of an exception to this and that brings me to my other point, Hitz managed to give each character a unique tone and voice in a way that was surprisingly minimalist.
If you're looking for a serious horror story that doesn't pull punches and will keep you at the edge of your seat until it just gets absolutely crushing, look no further.

Bloodtooth by D.W. Hitz
https://horrorbookwormreviews.com/

The year is 1992 and childhood friends explore a legendary set of caves known as Bloodtooth Caverns. Within the walls of the enormous chambers there lies an ominous presence, something that is controlling children within its self made prison. After extinguishing its hold on the innocent, the thing lies dormant…until thirty years later. It has now awaken and whispers its evil hunger into the ears of those easily manipulated.

D.W. Hitz has written an epic novel of massive proportions surrounding the sleepy town of Custer Falls. Covering all aspects from childhood trauma to grisly serial murders, this surreal vision of unusual fearfulness traps the reader in a nightmare of unorthodox horror. Bloodtooth manifests itself into encounters of unspeakable entities that prey on sleeping souls. The bite it possesses has more startling scares than a funhouse of horrors.

This terrorizing tome contains multiple storylines that weave nicely together for a dark and intense read. Not only do you get your morbid bang for your buck but its volume on the eerie scale is turned to 11. The reader should expect to visit taboo subject matters that are considered forbidden. Thankfully Hitz is not afraid to tackle any toxic content, this in return causes the ultimate experience in helplessness. It’s pretty much a nightmare that one cannot wake from.

Something has come to town and is determined to visit your dreams. Serial Killer? Devil Worshipers? Homicidal Gang? Take a look inside Bloodtooth and find out for yourself. A five star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Horror Bookworm Recommendation.

I was eagerly and impatiently awaiting the release of this beautiful beast of a book (535 engrossing pages to be precise!) so to receive a review copy absolutely made my day! And the wait was so worth it, this book is an epic coming of age, supernatural, dark fantasy horror, along the lines of Stephen Kings IT!! (I actually likened it to a mash up of IT and Nightmare on Elm Street!! 🖤) A tale of shared dreams, and a shared curse!

Custer's Falls Elementary School kids are on their annual excursion to the Bloodtooth Caverns. When four friends decide to break off from the others to investigate an interesting looking blocked off tunnel, what could possibly go wrong?! A few badly broken bones and a coma later, Wes realises he has brought something else back with him from the caverns, something sinister that calls to him and others in their sleep….

Thirty years later, strange things are starting to happen again, but not just in their dreams this time, this time they have seeped into the waking world too!!

Di, Wes' sister, is on the run, from the voices and the visions left behind after the events of her childhood, but they're catching her up. She reunites with Wes and their friends to try and stop things from getting even worse, again!
But they are all having recurring nightmares about that time, long ago, and fresh nightmares too, and they are all too realistic and familiar… Voices urging them on, giving them the confidence to do things they wouldn't normally do, and once they've done it once, they get a real taste for doing it again… also experiencing feelings of impending dread, of something bad about to happen, and they are usually correct, they are premonitions, ones that are stark, dark realities. The dreams that they share are bizarre, lucid, unrelenting, anxiety inducing dreams, that will keep you wide awake at night!

Stuck in a horrific dreamland, where past and present connect, they realise that they can somewhat control what happens in their dreams, that they can come together and defeat the Dream Demon 'Marenor', who is causing all the bloodshed and horror!

This story is so well written, it flows so smoothly that even when it flips from past to present throughout, it is done so easily and clearly, making it easy to follow, and to keep those pages turning!! The fear and trepidation echo throughout the cavernous atmosphere, hitting you with a feeling of claustrophobia in places and a real strong feeling of expectancy! It draws you in completely and keeps you in its deep, dark depths. It's eerie and chilling, and the pace picks up steadily throughout the book, until it hits maximum speed at the peak of Mount Custer and the Bloodtooth Caverns!! You also become truly invested in the characters, fighting with them, feeling with them, and fearing for them.

You know that feeling you get when you've woken from a dream, but you haven't, its just taken a different, more disturbing turn? And when you are dreaming, and you know it's a dream, but you can't wake up, but you can think things into happening because you've dreamt it before….thats this!! And as well as the usual suspects, zombies, demons, mythical creatures, dinosaurs and unicorns, the most terrifying of all is the human horrors portrayed in this story!!

You better hope that your dreams don't come true!!

Bibliophilia Templum review
https://bibliophiliatemplum.wordpress.com/2024/11/25/bloodtooth/

Bloodtooth by D.W. Hitz is an absolutely unnerving story. This is a wonderfully long novel, coming in at over 500 pages, with a sophisticated plot, graphic and horrifying sequences, and relentless suspense and tension. I found it riveting, chilling, and emotionally exhausting.

Hitz takes the classic nightmare horror theme to another level, employing elements of suspense and mystery, psychological horror, small-town horror, and supernatural horror to create a tale like no other. But this is a Custer Falls story, so one would expect no less. It’s a vivid and intense story with engaging, diverse, evocative characters. Hitz’s writing is on point, which is surely a major factor in the tension being so maddening. There were times I wasn’t sure how much more relentless horror the characters or I could take. I’m not sure why some people have called it a slow burn; that was not my experience.

Bloodtooth takes place in two separate years, thirty years apart, and is told from some different character perspectives. This gives it the complexity and depth necessary to show the parallels and overlap that is part of the horror of what’s happening. I thought it was brilliant and well executed, if a tad bit harrowing, as it adds to the tension. It’s immersive as well as horrifying on many levels.

Without giving spoilers, I will say Bloodtooth is the ultimate nightmare theme horror novel, a shelf-worthy 5-star read, but as it has some extreme content and graphic violence, it’s not for faint of heart.

Some students take a field trip to Bloodtooth Caverns. A few of them decide to stray off the path. None of them expected what would happen next or that it would haunt them for the next 30 years.

Oh, this book! It is suspenseful, thrilling, and packed with what nightmares are made of. Hitz did a brilliant job with this work of art. His descriptiveness plants you right in the story. It had me on the edge of my seat and feeling all the dread and terror the characters experienced. The sleep demon was haunting, spreading over two timelines and feeding on people’s anxieties and fears. If that isn’t horrible enough, it eventually learned to influence people when they are awake, too.

The characters were well done. I felt an attachment to several of them, especially Wes. Even the few that were repulsive were well thought out. You could just feel the darkness inside of them. All of this creates such a tense build up in the story as you follow their suffering, their sorrow, and the evil that motivates some of them.

Bloodtooth is an outstanding read. I’d recommend it to any horror lover. The graphic gory scenes don’t leave much to the imagination and show exactly what the main characters are up against. For me it was enjoyable, and I was rather surprised at how dark Hitz went with this. I’ve read his work before and enjoyed it, but this book raises the bar. I’d love to read more stuff like this from him in the future.

Grab a copy, get cozy and prepare to enter Bloodtooth Caverns.

"The terror that rose through his spine didn't feel like a dream's terror. It felt like the waking fear of real and impending death."

A very long and winding story. Told from two timeframes, we learn about the misfortunes that befall a small town through their dreams and waking nightmares.

I did feel like it was a lot of reading for kind of a small payoff at the end. There were so many characters to keep track of, I think having this split into two books would’ve flowed more easily; 1992 and then 2022 as its own book.

The demon/Mare was an interesting concept that could’ve been delved into a bit more: who imprisoned it, how did they get it to North America? Also its beginnings before it’s time on Earth.

A pretty good book, but one that may leave you with more questions than answers.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author & Fedowar Press for a copy.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My absolute favorite tropes in horror are evil in a small town and coming of age. I've been reading a lot of them lately, but I have to say, Bloodtooth manages combine both tropes superbly. Better than most, even. D.W. Hitz has created a world that is like the love child of IT and Nightmare On Elm Street, although it manages to be it's own thing entirely. The characters and the writing are excellent. Although Bloodtooth clocks in at almost 650 pages, I would have happily read 650 more. This is the first of Hitz's books that I've read and I'm eager to seek out more of his work.

Bloodtooth

by D.W. Hitz

This title will be released on January 17, 2023

If you thought your nightmares were bad, just wait until you hear about the town of Custer Falls, Montana. Something is stalking the townspeople in their nightmares, and it's up to Wes Henson and his friends to stop it. This is no ordinary task- they'll have to face what's lurking in both the waking world and the dream world.

This book was a great read from start to finish. I particularly enjoyed the dark and creepy nightmare element, which pulled me right in. The characters were well-written and relatable, which added to the story. The story had everything I could ask for: dark caverns, evil presences, twisty turns, a mix of past and present, action, and suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat.

If you're looking for a good scare, I would definitely recommend this book. It was a lot of fun to read, and I enjoyed it immensely. You can't go wrong with any of Mr. Hitz's stories.

It was my pleasure to receive a free copy of this book but that does not in any way affect my opinions in this review of this entertaining story.

Do you ever find yourself dragging your feet to finish a book not because it's bad, but because you don't want it to end? Bloodtooth is that book. It is everything I want in a book. This is small town, coming of age cosmic horror at its finest. It is well written and flows so smoothly.
Wes unknowingly unearths an unknown entity during a class field trip. His town becomes a living nightmare. Once he figures out what happened, he knows he has to fix it. He believes he and his friends have put everything to right. Until the same things start terrorizing the town 30 years later.

Wes knows he has to finish this thing once and for all. The first time this happened, multiple townspeople lost their lives. How many will die this time? Wes will have to race the clock to try to place the entity back to its own slumbering eternity. But what will be the cost?

This story has a long, slow, cosmic build. I didn't want to put this down. Until I didn't want it to end. I binged the 687 pages in 4 days. I was captivated from start to finish. There are so many warm vibes coming from this book - Needful Things, It, a little hint of The Dark Tower, and possibly a little Harry Potter feel (in one particular part, IYKYK). You will not want to miss out on this book.

Holy wow. I was given a copy of Bloodtooth by D.W. Hitz for a honest review and all I can say is wow. The story is set between two timelines but flows so nicely you don't get frustrated trying to keep up. The pacing drew me in from the first page and I was immediately engaged with the characters. The character development was well thought out and by the end you felt the emotions they were feeling. This gave me the creepy horror vibe and I loved it! I love the Nightmars on Elm Street and this definitely had a similar dread about the world of sleep. I would encourage anyone who loves a good demon story, family dynamics, and descriptive writing to check this out. The book is longer at 650 pages but I would have read double that and not even realized it the story flows so smoothly. I want to thank the author for allowing me to read their work. I will definitely be reading more in the future. I would give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ easily. Thank you for allowing me to read this amazing book! I can't wait to read more of your work in the future.

Bloodtooth is an amazing sweeping novel that deftly mixes genres and has you on the edge of your seat.

From the opening chapter where a group of children get seperated in a dark foreboding cavern to the ramifications thirty years later, this book throws images and blood soaked pages at you almost unrelentingly. This makes for a fast paced read with a sense of dread at what could happen next.

I loved the use of two timelines as a narrative because it gives us the chance to see and experience how events that ravaged a community in the past are linked directly to the brutality happening in the present.

The characters are well thought out and each one, even minor ones, felt real and unique.

I appreciated the many scenes of bloody mayhem as that helps solidify the peril our protagonists are in as they attempt to stop this evil that seems to have invaded the town once again. I highly recommend this book!

An epic, sprawling tale of nightmarish twists and threads. An absolute must for fans of A Nightmare on Elm Street, and horror of that particular ilk. Well-written, engaging, and full of tense, character drama and horror. A beast of a book that's easy to get lost in.

This book had been on my tbr for a good hunk of time but kept getting passed up because she is a literal beast, 687 pages or 23 hours on audio. I adore Hitz and Custer Falls, so I knew I HAD to read this. Also, it's narrated by Curtis Michael Holland ( my dark romance peeps know what's up ;) ). At this point, how could I ignore it any longer?!!

BLOODTOOTH is written in two timelines, 1992 and 2022. The reader is able to see what happened then and how those horrific events still impact Custer Falls today. A field trip into Bloodtooth Caverns doesn't go as planned because surprise surprise kids can't leave well enough alone!! Why did they have to mess with that dang rock? PUT.IT.BACK!

Hitz masterfully blends cosmic horror, coming of age, small town horror, and loads of blood to create an unforgettable tale.

Make no mistake, this is a horror story in every sense of the word... and the violence is very graphic. I may have winced here and there but it did not really bother me too too much. I've been reading horror for a very long time and have become a bit desensitized to it. This, however, was relentless and the author pulls no punches. As with a very famous book/movie, the story takes place in two separate decades 30 years apart, and follows a particular group of friends into adulthood. The events intertwine until one cannot be sure which came first, the horror in the past or the horror in the present. It does not stay with this group either, it spreads out like a vast spiderweb, touching here and there and catching whomever it can in its sticky threads. There may be times when the reader needs to take a small break to let what is happening sink in. It is a very long read and certainly not for the faint of heart. You have been warned.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and unbiased opinion of the tale.

30 years ago, a series of odd, awful events took place in the tiny town of Custer Falls, MT. There was an accident in Bloodtooth caverns during a school field trip. Three boys were injured and taken to the hospital. After the accident, seemingly random children fell into comas for no reason doctors could find. Simultaneously, a serial killer went on a rampage through town.
Now those children have kids of their own and whatever entity caused all that death and heartache three decades ago is back.
D.W. Hitz takes us on a wild ride by tapping into our dreams and commands obedience with only a whisper. Bloodtooth is a complex, creepy, suspenseful, cosmic, sometimes brutal, entertaining story full of great characters; both heroes and villains. If Stephen King, Freddy Kreuger and Andrew Van Wey had a baby they would name it Bloodtooth.

This was such a refreshing surprise. Hitz has absolute control of his story, and what a story it is! The sheer complexity of the narrative, the masterful intertwining of the two plotlines (in 1992 and 2022), plus the carefully delineated characters - this is certainly not a book to be taken lightly (pun intended - it's huge!) A small town horror, part coming of age story part cosmic horror, with very strong 'It' vibes, a deep knowledge of comics, unpredictable plot twists, graphic gory scenes - what more can a horror fan want? Without a doubt, this book is destined to become a classic. In short, I highly recommend it. It was an absolute joy to receive a free ARC from NetGalley!

Thank You D. W. Hitz

This books is action pack adventure from start to finish. It's the first book that I have read/ listen to that in my opinion needs to be read not listen to. It's actually two stories combined as one. There is a lot of flipping back and further. This book will creep you out and make you laugh 😃.

The Story is well written with characters you grow attach to. (some characters more then others)

Cosmic Horror
Gory
Extreme Horror
Highly Creepy

I Highly Recommend it.

This coming of age story flips effortlessly between the past, starting in 1992, and the present, in 2022. It’s not hard to switch between the two but there are a lot of characters to keep track of.

The story follows Wes and his friends as they battle an ancient evil, a demon/Mare released from its imprisonment within a strange rock.

This is a gory and violent read, and had me interested from start to finish as to what was going to happen to the characters, who were well developed and I found myself genuinely caring what befell them.

After reading this, I don't think I ever want to sleep again! But seriously, this was a fascinating book about a sleep demon and the terror it caused for a group of children, and then again for that same group as adults. It was extremely well written, the characters were relatable and believable, and the gore/horror was outstanding! I've never read anything quite like this, and I look forward to reading more from this author, as this book was amazingly well done.

This is a truly epic tale. I'm not sure I can come up with the words to do it justice. Everything about this was on point. The story was fantastic. The characters were flawless. It was an experience on par with King's It. I loved every part of this story and can't sing it's praises enough. You do yourself a disservice if you miss out on this amazing journey. I'd even go so far as to say this book is as close to perfection as you can get.

There’s something about dreams that are so mysterious, so creepy, and D.W. Hitz explores that to the fullest extent in Bloodtooth.

The story is told from multiple characters’ POVs from the past (1992) and the current time (2022). As terror descends on town in a multiple murder spree and kids start to go to sleep and not wake up, Wes has the unsettling feeling that this has all happened before. When he’s reunited with his addict sister, Di, he comes to realize that truth is stranger than fiction and that it’s up to them to put a stop to the madness.

I loved how absolutely intricate and detailed the plot was with the way the characters grow and come to understand their situation in both the past and the current time. I admit that I was a little confused at the beginning of the book because there are a lot of characters to learn, but once I did that, I loved where the story went. There were monsters and demons and claustrophobic situations. This was a fantastic mashup of so many awesome tropes.

I read another review that mentioned something about this giving vibes somewhere between Stephen King’s It and the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, and that is a very accurate description.

All in all, if you’re in the mood for an epic dark fantasy with some horror elements, this will definitely hit the spot.

This book had a lot of heart. I really wanted to like it more than I did. I stuck with it through the first few hundred pages when part of me wanted to leave it DNF'd. I just hoped that all the meandering and long-winded passages led to something satisfying. It would have been worth it if there was an ending that justified the beginning.

It took me over a month to read this because of how long winded it was. I would read until I got tired of reading and feel like I barely made a dent in the story. And yet...

I'm not going to leave spoilers but the ending for every character and the end to the novel itself did not justify the journey.
