A DEAD WOMAN IN THE SNOW. A SERIES OF MYSTERIOUS SUICIDES. A DETECTIVE TARGETED BY A KILLER.
A young woman is found dead, lying in the snow on Dartmoor. Her throat has been cut. Everything points to suicide.
Still reeling from his first Devon murder case, DCI Peter Moone is put in charge and told to neatly tie up the suicide and file it away. Moone is not convinced.
But then there's a second mysterious suicide and a few elements that just don't add up. To Moone and DI Mandy Butler it looks as if someone is forcing them to take their own lives.
When Moone forms his murder team, he finds himself having to work once more with the unstable Faith Carthew, who seems more dangerous than ever. He realises not only does DS Carthew have her sights set on him, but also on one day becoming his boss- something he cannot let happen.
It soon becomes apparent to DCI Moone their killer has a list of potential victims that he plans to force to take their own lives.
On that list, is the name of a certain detective...
I did say I wouldn't be reading another DCI Peter Moone and here I am reviewing book 2. My overall view hasn't changed. The structure and plot of the book is very good. No complaints there. It had the reader thinking and i haven't come across a similar murder approach i.e. to have numerous people commit suicide and also to relieve them of some of their money, though the murderer states that the latter wasn't his main aim. So what is my problem with Mark's DCI Moone books? The usual dysfunctional nature of the police in general. I'm sure most of the reviews will say how great the relationship between Moone and his partner Acting DI Mandy Butler, a rude, bombastic and in general a poor detective given her attitude. Then there is Moone himself who lacks self control when it comes to women which gets him into trouble on a regular basis. Then we have DS Faith Carthew who is happy to do whatever is necessary to get to the top. If that includes killing rivals along the way then so be it. Ah, it's clicked, that's why i keep reading the books. I want to know what happens to Faith Carthew!
Book 3, I suppose so but if Carthew is not locked away in Broadmoor by the end.............
Better than the first book, probably because the central characters are more established.
It's a standard crime thriller with a slight twist at the end, but if you are a regular reader of this genre you'll probably guess the killer way before the end.
I certainly hope there is a third edition in the works, the way this one finished left a lots of unanswered questions, well one in particular that all readers need to see completed.
Easy read and entertaining. I do like the way the characters are evolving, however, we do need more flesh on the bones of most of them.
I'd recommend for a good holiday read, especially if to live in or visit Plymouth, Devon as you'll know the place they visit.
