' “Ah, but I don't understand it. Wasn't the white man our common enemy? How has this turned into a tribal thing? Are we not one?” '

3:15 Am And Other Stories by Rudo Manyere
~~~
Lemme start by saying rarely do I read short stories. I have this fear that a story or two will spoil the whole book. But when I turned the first page of “3:15 Am And Other Stories” by Rudo Manyere, I just kept turning and turning the pages. Whetted appetite being satisfied.
Every word, sentence and paragraph are economized well, meaning we'll put across. Her narration both first person and multiple POVs are well executed adding a deeper view of the world she creates. Fluidity of her stories was beautiful, weaving subtle actions with deep themes and subtle themes with deep actions.
Oh, she has a knack with her wordplay too and her themes ranged from immigration, lost love, betrayal, family, colonialism, liberation, love, loss, pain, traditions, marriage, 'demons' we behold, infidelity... Every theme tagging my heart strings, every story leaving a mark in my heart and educating my mind on Zimbabwe and what it means to be African from way back then till contemporary now.
I deeply enjoyed and deeply appreciated '1965' and 'Pamushana'. Not because I love somber themes. But because I could see some semblance to my Kenyan history, effects of colonialism and tribalism, love, betrayal...things that made me look forward and pray especially now that elections are knocking on our door.
With the exquisite package and even more delectable content, this is a book I'd highly recommend: unapologetically Africa and true though fictitious. 🤭
Was reading and my heart was in awe of Rudo. I may not know her personally but I couldn't be more proud and am grateful to be some of the people to read and review the book beforehand. Maita.
A beautifully written debut by Rudo Manyere, set around the experiences of myriad characters. Evokes a cacophony of emotions, unrequited love, betrayal, disillusionment and alienation among others. Again and again, Manyere's stories aptly captures the subtleties of multiple dynamics and social situations involving her diverse characters.
This brilliant debut signals the promise of more to come from the erudite pen of the author. I look forward to reading more from this vibrant voice.
