A Jane Ladling Mystery #3.5

Twelve Graves of Christmas

Rate this book
Jane Ladling presents the perfect fail-proof recipe to spice up the holidays. Or ruin them. Baker’s choice!

Mix a murderous cat with a goofy corgi. (Ignore any hissing. That definitely probably means the two ingredients are blending amazingly well.) Then add a landlocked cemetery allegedly peppered with gold-stuffed coffins. Whisk in a gravekeeper convinced a family curse forever dooms her to lose any man she loves. Marinate with a ridiculously charming ex-special agent whose muscles and lopsided smile make her forget said curse. Toss in a pinch of mystery courtesy of an old, coded treasure map and crank up the heat. Broil, baby!

If no one dies, serve with a smile. If they do, smile wider.

And maybe, just maybe, Jane can solve a series of bewildering clues, end the curse for good, and finally find her own happily ever after. Or not.

Okay, wow! That was not only oh so cute but also hilarious and touching! I absolutely loved the insight into Rolex's mind, honestly reminds me of my harpy cat Kaia🐈‍⬛ who plots the death and destruction of everyone she has the displeasure of meeting, yet I'm not sure if I should cheer him on his quest for vengeance or not. I mean I was on his side until Special Agent Conrad Ryan melted my heart in a certain scene! Sorry Beau but he's now tied with you for my affections 😏

This is the perfect little Thanksgiving/Christmas novella. We have an animal love hate bromance, holiday dinner with the family and unwelcome guests, some mystery solving, romance in the air and possibly just maybe something better than breaking a curse or finding gold. That in itself is a treasure all its own ❤️ Do yourself a favor and gift this book for yourself and anyone on your holiday lists that loves to read 📚

Yes, I know, it's a little early for Christmas books, but since this book is releasing november 1st, right after Halloween season is over, I wanted to be sure my review was up before then so people could also catch up with the rest of the series if they haven't read the books yet. So far I had an insanely good time with all of them and I was therefore really looking forward to this Christmas themed novella and even happier that the authors gave me an arc!

This book actually already starts before Thanksgiving and is therefore more than just a Christmas novella. We get to see Jane doing what Jane does best: Gathering her friends around and feeding them all kind of delicious cookies, cakes and meals. And along the way she also knows how to clear the air between people, how to loosen up the atmosphere and how to make this a holiday season to never forget for everyone involved.

Since there is no murder happening in this book and since the mysteries our characters are trying to solve are a lot smaller and less complicated there is also way more time for Jane to give her love life some serious thought. We know she firmly believes in the curse, which keeps her away from Conrad who is very clearly very in love with her. In this book we see how she's constantly battling with her own feelings and whether or not she should believe in Conrad being able to break the curse.

Without any murders there's also more time for Jane to finally focus on the question whether or not there's gold buried somewhere on her property. I love how we learn a lot about her family; About their traditions, the most amazing one being an amazing Christmas ceremony for the dead, and what kind of people her Ladling ancestors were. I really can't wait to find out what more reveals about Jane's family are waiting for us in future books!

* You need to read the previous books before reading this novella.

With Christmas coming up, Jane Ladling is contemplating her break-up from her hotshot boyfriend Conrad and while cleaning up she finds a mysterious dairy from her ancestor. In the dairy she finds clues to the whereabouts of the mysterious gold hoard, so she assembles Team Truth once again. When Conrad moves in with her, as he is running for sheriff in Aurelian Hills, sparks fly between them once again and Jane has to confront more than her family history before the holidays can take place.

This was a very fun read, full of holiday cheer and with a mystery that gives us more insight in Jane's family history. There were loads of funny scenes and a lot of banter, with a sprinkling of the romantic fire that has been going throughout this series. I loved the little scenes from Rolex' view and I could read a whole book like that. The next book will be from Conrad's view and I'm sure that will be fun, but I also cannot wait the read where this story will go next.

As seasons change, so must the groundskeeper of the Garden of Memories. But can she?

This story picks up after the third book. Jane is emotional about her breakup with Officer Detective Inspector Special Agent Future Sheriff Ryan but she totally did the right thing protecting him from certain death when the curse activated which it totally would. But that stubborn former detective hopeful new sheriff won’t take no for an answer and moves right in to her guest room, no ulterior motives of course.

The authors have brought a little more romance in to this cozy mystery. With two mysteries to solve and no dead body, the characters were able to have more interactions. This story fits right in with the prior books. It’s fast paced, funny and unexpected. You’ll never guess who did it and you’ll never understand how Jane figures it out every time. I can’t wait to read Conrad’s story.

I know it seems ridiculous that every book has been a five star read but this series is genuinely THAT good. I can’t explain it other than it’s scratching that itch of
Romance and quirkiness and acceptance and found family and murder mystery all in one! I love them all with my heart and am on to the next one! 💙😭

P.S I absolutely adored the two chapters from Rolex’s perspective and I’m crossing my fingers for Cheddar’s version !

Ooooh I have never been more thoroughly charmed! There’s whimsical magic in these books and that’s all I can say. Cocaine to my brain. Also the Rolex chapters? Genius. (Also why am I not rating them all 5 stars? Food for (my) thought)

I loved everything about this book! First, we get a couple of chapters from the POV of Rolex, and they were completely adorable and it is exactly what I imagine goes on in the mind of a kitty cat.
Conrad is staying with Jane while investigating the thing that happened to her in the previous book, and having him and Cheddar around is sorely testing her resolve to stay single and never fall in love. There is a bit of a side mystery tied to the ever-elusive treasure supposedly buried in the cemetery, and it was so much fun watching my favorite people solve it. I loved the romance between Conrad and Jane, they are so perfect together and I loved seeing their relationship progress.
I think this is probably my favorite of the series so far, and I can't wait to read the next book!

Twelve Graves Of Christmas takes place right after the events from Game Of Gravestones so it may spoil things in Game Of Gravestones if you haven’t read it yet.

If you're looking for the perfect holiday light read that feels like a cozy blanket being wrapped around your heart, look no further!

We return to Aurelian Hills in just time for the holiday season.

This opening had me grinning something fierce! I don’t want to give anything but we are treated with a very special opening that I absolutely adored! Oh this book was such a warm and cozy read, complete with all the feels. Dripping with old tales of long lost gold, family secrets, century old betrayals, mysteries, love, loss, curses, swoon worthy romance, fur baby bromance, encompassed in the warm feeling of family.

I enjoyed that you get more insight into the delectable agent spice himself as he sets out on his most important operation yet. Winning over Jane. Is Conrad the man finally strong enough to break the Ladling curse? Can he pull Jane away from believing in an old family curse? With the curse in full swing for Jane, she is suffering from her own devices. Conrad and team truth are determined to change her mindset. With an unexpected turn in Jane and Conrad’s relationship they are struggling to navigate through the ever changing mind of Jane.

We also get the joys of a new fur baby co-existing with the best little house panther! One thing I really enjoyed was how wholesome this was. You have a tight knit bunch of characters that have had vastly different upbringings and you can truly cherish how the little things light up their life where they never had it before. These characters have nuzzled their way into a special place in my heart. Seeing Fiona and the sheriff’s relationship further and how they are starting a life together is sweet. The magnolia tree gets its little cameo again and I can’t help but giggle. It’s one of my favorite scenes from No Gravestone Left Unturned, if you know you know!

I can’t recommend this series enough. I know I probably say it a lot but these books are a pure joy and are delightful to read! With each installment you dive deeper into the town of Aurelian Hills and its scandalous inhabitants, each character opens just a little where you can’t help but love and sympathize with them more. I hope Jane can change her mindset to see her chance at love!

After Game Of Gravestones I was left hungry for more and I completely devoured this book! I read it in one sitting and let me tell you, I’m starving for the next one!

At this point, I will read any and all Jane Ladling stories that Gena and Jill decide to write, no questions asked. There's just something about these characters that pull me into the story, and I am thoroughly here for both the cozy mystery and the chemistry between Jane and Conrad.

Twelve Graves of Christmas moves Jane's story forward both in terms of her relationship with Conrad as well as her family's potentially still-buried treasure. Showalter and Monroe do an excellent job at balancing both the family curse and the family treasure storylines, and Jane's holiday adventures (and cooking) made me wish the holidays would get here faster.

With a greater emphasis on family and friendship (and friendship that feels like family), this holiday story is definitely suitable for anyone and not just for those looking for a holiday read. As the weather gets chillier in Aurelian Hills, Jane finds herself facing both her family's past as well as her future with Conrad. I loved both aspects of this story, and can't wait to see where Jane's adventures take her from here.

As always, Showalter and Monroe's writing is so easy to get lost in. Whenever I pick up a Jane Ladling book, I instantly feel like I know Jane. I can practically taste Fiona's blueberry pancakes. Aurelian Hills might be a sleepy little fictional town, but these citizens are fleshed out and the streets feel as real as any actual town.

Twelve Graves of Christmas was a quick read for me, but only because I couldn't put it down. With a larger focus on the Ladling curse and Jane's future, and less on any active crime scenes, this book moved Jane's story along while also setting up Conrad's side of things for the next book.

A huge thank you to both Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe for providing an advanced copy of Twelve Graves of Christmas; all opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I’m in love with this novella so much! I’m already on my second re-read because it just gave me all the warm fuzzy feelings and I’m not quite ready to let that go just yet. It was the cutest, warmest, most lovable fun read I have read in a while, props to our queens Gena and Jill!

If you’ve loved the first three books in the Jane Ladling series then you will love this Christmas Novella. We get more of that one on one time with Jane and Conrad (swoon) and a family mystery to solve! Of course Team truth is there for the ride and we even get a point of view from Rolex (which was freaking hilarious and cute lol) what’s not to love about our favorite “sweet” cat? Also, we get to learn more about Jane’s Family history and traditions and it was nice to see her share them with her team truth family. The Christmas scene where they light the candles and tea lights was so special and beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes.

While we did solve one part of the family mystery there is still more to learn about the family gold so I hope we get more of that too, it will be fun to see how well Conrad and Jane can keep working together now that they are officially a couple! Woot! And I have to say, it takes a special special man to appreciate all of what Jane encompasses. She is quirky, loyal, honest, an amazing friend, so lovable and is a ride or die kind of gal who will be there for you through thick and thin. And man, Conrad complements her so well, he is so patient and sees her for who she is and just let’s her shine. Their love story is so beautifully written, I can’t say it enough how much I adore it.

Don’t sleep on this series!!

I keep falling more and more in love with Jane and Conrad. Well, with the whole gang to be honest. We can all see what Conrad does, that Jane is in love with him but man she's making this hard! Having broken up with him in the last book, it doesn't take much insight to know her subconscious is totally into having Conrad close when he asks to move in. It's the perfect chance for Conrad to stay close, remind her how good they are together and move their relationship forward. Of course, to love Jane is to become embroiled in her mysteries. This time she's determined to solve the dilemma of the gold supposedly buried on the property. Conrad is also determined to find out who sabotaged Jane's car though Jane seems to not care as much oddly.

Jane's decision to matchmake for Conrad is so funny because we all know what she doesn't want to admit. When he describes her as his ideal woman it goes right over her head. SMH.

Conrad is amazing with Jane. He just doesn't let her crazy bother him. He rolls with whatever she's saying or doing and it's so endearing. Conrad *sigh*. All our favorite characters are back including Fiona and Beau who are both lovable and flow with Jane's investigations too.

The authors do a great job of creating clues that must be deciphered. It's fun to learn more about her ancestors and to find a lot more info but the gold conundrum still isn't solved. Meaning I have to wait patiently for more!

Thanks to the author for the ARC.

Jane and Conrad reach a meeting of the minds ,.......... And hearts.

Jane has been determined not to fall victim to the Landling curse (which is that if she calls in love her lover will die) but that was before she.met Special Agent Detective Conrad Ryan. He makes her long for things she knows she cannot have like love and a family. Jane is incapable of resisting Conrad and they agree to date ,................. Thought she's quite firm she will not be calling in love with him. No way no how. ................. As Jane's landlocked family owned cemetery has recently become the site of a few murders Conrad finds lots of reasons.for dropping in on her and sticking.close, but Jane is able to solve the murders using her own unorthodox detective skills. At the end of the last book realising how close she was becoming to Conrad (almost falling in love) Jane breaks up with him but Conrad has his own plans and sets them in motion, he's moving into town looking to buy a house and is planning on running for the Sheriffs job, so he will become a permanent fixture in Jane's life. Everybody is telling Jane if there is one.man capable of breaking the Landling curse it's Conrad and Jane is starting to think they may be right. A very sweet, sentimental story with lots of humor.

Oh man, Jane is just a wildly unpredictable, lady, isn't she? She might jump to conclusions and follow a very convoluted path to reach an answer, but she does get there. Eventually. And she's mostly right (at least when it comes to figuring out who the bad guys are) even if she takes so really BIG leaps to figure things out.

Well, she's right except when it comes to trusting her heart to someone. It's not even that she trusts her heart to the wrong person, she just 100% believes in the Ladling curse and refuses to put someone she has feelings for (possibly) in harm's way. Which means she's been fighting this thing between her and Conrad since the beginning.

Fortunately for her, the hunky special agent isn't one to give up easily and he just keeps gently insinuating himself into Jane's life in the best way. Which means Jane fights even harder and Conrad digs himself in even deeper. You know, until Jane can't deny that she has feelings for the big guy.

A little puzzle-solving, a hunky roommate, a plotting cat, a glorious holiday meal, and a whole lot of Jane-isms. *thumbs up*

Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe's cozy mystery series ,Jane Ladling Mystery, has fast become a favorite. Over the first 3 books, there are three murders. All three bodies are found on Jane’s property, The land locked Garden of Memories Cemetery. Which, if not to clear her name or protect a friend, is the perfect reason for her to investigate and solve the murder. Quirky, nonlinear reasoning, and interesting analysis, along with shenanigans with friends who call themselves Team Truth, brings Jane a 3 for 3 conviction rate! Much to the amazement of Special Agent Conrad Ryan.

Throughout each book, we hear of the Ladling Legend of hidden gold in the Cemetery and the one thing keeping her from accepting love in her life, The Family Curse. Conrad is determined through patient perseverance to prove he's the one to break it, and she's determined to protect him.
Throughout the storyline, we learn, in sometimes heartbreaking revelations, the fears that has keeping him at arms length her desire. And also why Conrad is so determined to finally have his heart's desire with Jane.

With the help of Team Truth, Rolex the Watchcat, and letters and journals that bring messages from family beyond the grave lead to discoveries about legends, curses, and the heart are made! Great read of well developed characters. A storyline showing growth and filled with humor, emotion, and holiday festivities Jane style!

What a perfect follow up novella after the past book.
We get the cat's point of view, which is not only hilarious, but seems to contradict everything that Jane believes about her cat.
Jane is trying to avoid the curse, so she has broken things off with Conrad. However, Conrad is not walking away. He's using his wiles as well as Jane's curiosity to not only stay around her but have her want him around him.
Jane's grandmother has left a series of Christmas themed letters for Jane. Even though Jane reads them, she seems to be fighting the theme of the, all because of what she believes is the family curse. Add to that, Jane has discovered a journal, from her grandmother's first husband. It seems to be leaving clues to the hidden gold!
No murder in this book. Just a delightful story about trying to get two people back together. Food, family, friends and the connections they all have with each other.

Thank you to Gena Showalter for the advanced copy
I feel that this book is a must read, whether you celebrate Christmas or not. It answers a lot of questions and hopefully sets us up nicely for the next installment.

I'm not going to lie, I think this might be my favorite book of the series. I absolutely loved it, I legitimately could not stop reading. Twelve Graves of Christmas is a long novella set after Game of Gravestones and it's just delightful. No murders this time, maybe, probably, but it's Jane we're talking about, and mysteries follow her around.

I actually really liked the plot for this book, I thought it was very interesting and kept me captivated the entire time. I loved seeing more romance as well, finally more development! Plus, the prologue and epilogue were absolutely priceless, I won't spoil anything, but they were my favorite parts of the book.

I think Gena & Jill are getting more and more comfortable writing together, finding their flow, and each book in this series is getting better. This is such a great, light, cozy, and fun series that I recommend to anyone!

Disclaimer: I was able to read an early copy of this book as I work for the author.

Love, love, love this series!
Conrad moving to the town is amazing because it equals MORE Conrad!! He knows Jane so well & I'm here for it. Does murder mittens have a new father?!
I love the holiday aspect of this book.. with both the Thanksgiving and Christmas scenes. Honestly, Thanksgiving is kinda bleh for me, but I would totally dig her Thanksgiving menu!
Yall, I can't choose a favorite book in the series... buuuuut with the hunt for gold, this book is trying to be number one. Especially with a certain person on the hunt as well, I was STRESSED at times. Not to mention the library scene. I was so mad for her I would've thrown some hands and I'm kinda surprised Jane didn't.
Seriously though, best little series to curl up in a mountain of blankets with and devour.

I floved everything about this book! From the first page until the last I was kept entertained by Jane, her belief in the Ladling Curse, her intrepidness, and her determination to solve the mystery of gold buried in the graveyard, and by Conrad, his attepts at getting Jane to realize the curse is all I her head, and as he tries to solve who wants Jane dead. There's also Rolex-the-cats POV....which is hilarious. I'm sure that's how cats really think. And I can't forget how wonderful all the members of TeamTruth are. They all feel like family you can't wait to visit. Now I'm ready for Conrad's book.

In the meantime though, I'm gonna find my fanciest hat, bake my favorite casserole, and head on over to Aurelian Hills to celebrate Christmas with Jane and her crew.

Many thanks to Author Talk Media for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.

It wasn't as great as all the other mysteries, but it's also a novella. So, for what it is, it sufficed.

However, I do feel a LITTLE cheated that our resolution to this three book long slow burn is just kind of ended? It felt like Gena got tired of writing it and knew she couldn't leave readers hanging so was just like--here. Have your conclusion. And I'll take a conclusion over none any day, but it makes me sad that such a charming series didn't get a better ending.

She also completely set this up for a spin off about the side characters and I will be SUPREMELY disappointing if I don't get Beau's love story with his chaotic human. But based on this ending, I'm not holding my breath.

Does this mean I won't be one-clicking Conrad's story when it releases? Absolutely not. I want to hear the inside of that FBI agent's head as he's struck down by the whirlwind of Jane Ladling.

Just like the other three books in this series, this is utterly adorable! I cannot think of a better word to describe this book or series. Jane is adorable, Conrad is adorable, they're adorable together, and even the side characters are adorable.

This series is literally the coziest series. BUT, there is also humor, a little bit of mayhem, and mystery galore. Each book is short (this being one of the shortest since it's a novella), but not so short you feel like you're missing out on detail. I mean, it's only 144 pages and I have 35(!) highlights and notes!

I recommend this to anyone who even just remotely likes cozy mysteries. But also, if you just want a palate cleanser between those heavy-hitter books you're reading.

One of my favorite scenes between bffs Jane and Beau:
“Guess what? I’m giving you the silent treatment too.”
“As if! What crime have I committed?”
“You stole my common sense,” he accused. “There is no other reason I would be in an argument about the silent treatment.”

3.75 rounding up

Okay, here’s my beef: if Christmas is in the title, I expect Christmas. Not “leading up to Thanksgiving” with a quick cameo from Christmas at the end. I want December and on, lights twinkling, snow falling, gingerbread in the oven, the whole festive package 😆

Nevertheless, this was a cute and quirky mystery-esque novella. The vibe was light, fun, and easy to follow, and even without the full Christmas immersion I hoped for, it still delivered a cozy, entertaining little story. So while it wasn’t the Christmas-fest I was promised, it still scratched the itch for a quirky, low-stakes holiday mystery.

Kelli Tager was the narrator, and she did a wonderful job. She handled a whole range of voices, and each one felt distinct, recognizable, and perfectly matched to the character. Truly such a solid performance.

I initially read this book as an ARC was generously given to me.

With that being said, I loved the Holiday tie in with this book, as well as the MCs wrapping up a few loose ends from the other stories. I love how Jane's mind works when she is deducing her suspects. In the craziness, and really, her out of the box thinking, is really how she does what she does. And even when she suspects someone of doing anything, I think the readers also feel her reasoning to be somewhat true. If, not at the moment. And Conrad! Sweet sweet Conrad! I am so glad he is part of Team Truth because, they may need actual policing skills once in while (sorry Jane)!. Anot not only are we Team Truth, but we are also Curse Breakers! How sweet. All in all, this is definitely a holiday cozy read you do not want to pass up on!

So so cute. I love the Jane Ladling series because it is so much fun and the characters are the best. In the last book, Jane broke up with Conrad; in this one, we see that the breakup doesn't stick. Though instead of hunting down a killer they are looking for the lost gold of the Ladlings when Jane finds a journal that proves that the gold did exist. And through the crazy schemes of gold hunting, they plan holidays together and hunt down the person who messed with Jane's car. This one was definitely the coziest mystery in the series but I loved it. Perfect for getting you into the holiday season.

Hands down my favourite of the series! This was the perfect dose of cosy, mystery, heart and quirky.

Our heroine owns a cemetery and is solely devoted to it (and her cat). She recently broke up with our hero because she believes she is cursed, but our hero turns up on her doorstep asking for a place to stay and she can’t say no….. He’s on a mission to win her back while she remains absolutely clueless.

This series never fails to make me smile and laugh. It’s outrageous in the best possible way and I don’t even mind that it doesn’t have any steam- because it makes up for it in heart. Can’t wait for the next one, especially because it will be from the hero’s POV at last!

Breaking the curse

The Twelve Graves of Christmas is a sweet read with the emphasis on being in love and setting dreams on track. Jane Landling has longed believed in the family curse that says any man the Landling woman falls for is doomed to die. She cares to much for Conrad to risk the curse. Due to the determination of a very sexy and patient, Conrad, he is determined to convince her that he is stronger than any curse. Add the mystery of possible lost gold and trying to determine what happened to her great grandfather and you have a very exciting read and romance story.

I liked this one so much better than the previous three books. It was very good to see Jane slowly maturing and letting go of her fears, and Conrad having so much patience (with his sneaky self 😂😂😂). The progression of their relationship was good, and if Conrad survives Rebel the cat’s evil plans for him 😂😂, looking forward to the next installment

The mystery was a side character to the relationship development. Jane’s search for the gold, and Conrad’s investigation into who sabotaged her car (from the last book) are wrapped up here.
