Journey to new reaches in this exclusive comic tie-in set between seasons one and two of fan-favorite Paramount+ series Strange New Worlds! With Una accused of unlawful genetic modification by Starfleet, Captain Pike sets out in search of evidence that could prove her innocence.
The Illyrian Inigma is an exciting stepping stone that bridges the gap between seasons 1&2 of Strange New Worlds. Taking place directly after Commander Una Chin Riley's arrest in the season 1 finale "A Quality of Mercy"-Captain Pike and the immediate crew are devastated and feel helpless to assist their comrade. They decide to use a routine supply run as a means to delve deeper into the mystery of the Illyrian culture in an attempt to vindicate their accosted crewmate. But, do they get more than they bargained for when they turn over stones perhaps left unturned? The Illyrian Inigma raises some interesting questions: SHOULD Illyrians be ousted from Starfleet for thier genetic modifications? Is outlawing genetically modified people from Starfleet keeping up with thier standards of diversity and inclusion? This story also features the time honored trope of forcing the captain to choose between his loyalty to crew and family vs. loyalty to Starfleet. Along the way we learn that only by 'embracing' diversity can we learn more about it. Authors Kristen Beyer and Mike Johnson provide a good solid story which delves into Star Trek's mythology whilst simultaneously adding to it. They do an excellent job writing the characters-bringing them to life on the page as much as you see them on the screen. The detailed artwork by Megan Levens compliments the characters with a smooth fluidity that brings them to life and makes you.feel like your watching the show. But it's the vibrant coloring by Charlie Kirchoff that really floored me. Not only did his coloring compliment Leven's illustrations, it also gave the story a 'strange new world' vibe all its own; with lavish landscapes, asteroid laden planetoids, and deadly atmospheres. I breezed through this four issue series on my Kindle in less than a day for just under 8 bucks. If your a collector you might want to get the paper copies individually. The story alone makes it a worthy investment. The Illyrian Inigma definitely wetted my appetite for the approaching Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The art in this comic book is beautiful!! And the story leaves me intrigued as to what will happen next. This is my first experience with the guided reading, and I find it to be pretty cool. While the physical comic wasn't available for me to purchase, I actually really like this format.
I've been waiting for this issue since I first found out about this particular series. Five *****'s for everything! AND we have confirmation that the Illryian's seen in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode, "Damage", are the same species as Una!!!!
This book is trying VERY hard to be a clever tie in to the phenomenal new Star Trek streaming series Strange New Worlds. Following the USS Enterprise under the command of Christopher Pike. This show is an utter delight. The comic not so much.
I hate that the episodes are so short, however captain pike looking out for his number one who was taken prisoner for being Illyrian and going out to investigate. In order to prove her innocence is, of course expected. Can’t wait for the next episode.
