SCRI

Rate this book
A Government Sanctioned Murderer

Braylee has held the title of the most powerful cryptid since the day he turned fifteen. Everyone around the world knows his name and what he's capable of. What many don't know is that he's gotten this far without ever taking an imprint. His superiors are laying on the pressure to finally settle, but will they be able to handle the results of their little scheme?

A Fun-Loving College Student

Rare as they were, Janie never much worried about the SCRI and their superhuman abilities. She was way too focused on finally finishing her degree after six years and dozens of setbacks.
She certainly never imagined she’d be forced into an imprint contract, let alone with someone as infamous and powerful as Braylee Stockton.

An Unintentional Contract

Now, Braylee and Janie must learn to get along and navigate their new normal with fresh targets taped to their backs. Hopefully they don't get killed along the way.

Did anything happen? No. Do I fully understand what a SCRI or imprint is? No. Do I think the FMC should kind of get over it and give Braylee a chance? Definitely. Is this a name I don’t like? Yes. Will I be reading the rest of this series, yes actually. In spite of the things I didn’t understand or the things I didn’t like, I found this book interesting. I want to learn the answer to my questions and see if they “will” in this will they won’t they situation.

SCRI is a sci-fi fantasy slowburn romance. Scri stands for Supernatural Cryptids: Registry of Individuals. It refers to the registry and also is slang for the people on it. The author doesn’t explain much about what a Scri is at the beginning but we learn more about what it means alongside the human main character, Janie. We know that they have powers and that they bond to humans to increase them.

Janie is gathered together with thousands of single women to be a Scri's potential imprint. Braylee is a powered person who is so strong that no one can control him. Any power they can test for, he has it. And now he’s being pushed into taking an imprint which will only increase his power. As soon as we met Braylee I was hooked.

Braylee fascinated me. I'm intrigued by the question of how a person is affected when they grew up with powers so strong that everyone fears them and the government uses them. He’s introduced as this loose canon and he lives up to that reputation when we meet him. His relationship with his parents is a redeeming factor as they help rein him in and balance him. But clearly his unorthodox childhood has left him with some self control issues that are scary in one so powerful. But when Braylee first meets our heroine Janie things get both more stable and more volatile.

Janie was a head strong and impetuous character. She’s struggled to help her family through hardship and she’s not shy about disagreements and drama. Much of this book is her adjusting to life among the powered people as well as Braylee’s uber rich family. While Braylee is immensely affected by his bond with Janie, it isn’t as natural for her to accept so much change in her life quickly.

This story has plenty of drama and angst, including exes and murder attempts. But there are plenty of adorable and fun scenes to balance it out. Side characters are complex and while everyone is trying to adjust, there’s no instant love or instant found family. But growing friendships and family relationships are engaging to read.

The concept was interesting, but it reads like a rough draft. Misspellings everywhere.

Plot points aren't clear. Nor are they set-up for cohesive storytelling.

Repeat phrases:
"To be honest..."
"If I'm being honest..."
"Honestly..."
"To tell the truth..."
"I must say..."
"I have to say..."

Amazon recommends ages 14-18. Disagree entirely. This book encourages toxic and unhealthy relationships. Encouraging women to accept abuse and their boundaries to be ignored.

The only semi-decent character is the cat.

***Trigger Warnings:
Braylee is abusive (mental/emotional/PHYSICALLY/sexually), lacks self-control, and has a disgusting personality. He is extremely unsafe to be near. Volatile. Just because he's "all powerful", he gets away with everything. Lyra does all his thinking for him, and Derek attempts to control the rest of him. Written like a sadistic 14 y/o who throws tantrums and goes on murder sprees. He doesn't have a single redeeming quality.

Janie has impulse control issues and PTSD. Which Braylee manipulates and takes advantage of, then takes it out on her if it backfires. She talks a big game of protecting/defending others, but only escalates problems, and then blames it on other peoples personalities.

Derek is just an atrocious human being.

The parents might as well just be sock puppets for all the use they are.

Later in the series:
Medication shaming, when she definitely needs to be on it
Therapy shaming and aversion

I quite liked the story and world building and I wanted to read more in the same world, since it’s a slow burn romance that doesn’t (sadly) end with the MCs together. I also thought there were many characters with similar names. Brayden and Braylee, Danny and Derek, Chris and Charlie, Jennifer and Janie, Laura and Lyra, Riley and Rae. I think of the author knew she was going to write 5+ books from the start, she should’ve just pared down the number of characters introduced in this one while hinting at more that will be mentioned later; eg instead of saying the FMC went out with Sadie and Jennifer and so on at the bar, just mention that she met up with Sadie “and our other friends” and let the rest be mentioned later on in the series. I think the only people who really needed to be introduced and named in this book were FMC and MMC’s BFFs, Sadie and Derek, Derek’s brother Beto, and their parents; the rest just create kind of a confusing collage of “who’s that guy again?” that I didn’t really enjoy.

At Last Something Different!

At the beginning, I found this story a little hard to follow, but as I don’t like to give up on books unless they’re really badly written, boring or a lot of “amazings” thrown in, I started to really enjoy it. Mind you, I’ll probably go back to reread front the start, but hey, you can do that with a good book in order to get all the nuances.
I did thoroughly enjoy SCRI, n am so looking forward to the next one in the series.

Loved it

A good gripping story about a have not meeting a have it all. The have it all is the Scri of the title. There is enough loose threads to make you want the next book but the story stands alone. One of the best things for me was the lack of soft porn, and the inclusivity of the story. I will be buying the next book. Recommended.

Ready for book 2!

The characters seem a bit immature for being in their mid twenties, but otherwise I liked the story. The pacing of the book it doesn't feel rushed and the relationships don't seem forced. Excited to read the second

I picked this up for free on Stuff Your Kindle Day, and like most free Kindle books I’ve read, I think it could be summarized by saying interesting concept, plot and execution need work.

Cool premise, cool world, but just not well written. There were too many characters that were poorly introduced making the story extremely hard to follow and created a general apathy towards the characters

I saw a blurb about this book on TikTok. I think the premise is good and I do like the Female Lead/narrator. However, there’s some glaring issues with the writing.

1. There was almost no world building or introduction before the main conflict (like what the heck is a Scri? Where do they come from? What is happening to the FL? It takes almost the whole book to learn the answer to some of these questions).

2. Too many characters were introduced at the same time. I got whiplash around Chapter 5 and couldn’t even remember the main character’s names.

3. The book ends right in the middle of a scene (not on a cliffhanger. It just ends).

4. Nothing was really resolved by the end of the book. I would’ve preferred to have something at least addressed.

I did read the summary for the second book and it seems like there is a time jump so the ending of this book is just so confusing for me.
