Rae Cairns is a former youth worker, actor and singer who has turned to a life of crime…writing. She is fascinated with how ordinary people manage when faced with extraordinary circumstances so she writes crime with heart; thriller and suspense novels that explore the lengths everyday characters will go to when all they love is put at risk.
Her debut novel, The Good Mother, was shortlisted for BEST DEBUT CRIME FICTION in the 2021 NED KELLY AWARDS. It draws on her background as a youth worker mentoring disadvantaged youth, many of them children of the paramilitaries, in Northern Ireland during the final years of the Troubles.
Rae has also co-managed a crisis refuge for street children, worked as Program Director for the Sydney Olympic Youth Camp, holds a degree in Performing Arts and has done stints as an actor, dancer and singer in her travels around the globe.
When she’s not playing around with the lives of her imaginary characters she loves to read, hike, travel, go to the beach, sing, and laugh with family. You will never find her ironing (not enough patience) or gardening (the plants are very happy about this). Rae lives in Sydney, Australia with her pilot husband, two children and her dog, Alfie, who snores at her feet when she writes.
When Geneva Leighton's sister Amber disappeared after a harrowing phone call, her four year old daughter Lily and baby Charlie were secure in Gen's care. Now, twelve years later Gen was still caring for her niece and nephew, but when Amber's remains were located, their lives shattered once again. The children's father, and Amber's husband, Hugh, was a volatile and hateful man, who was also suffering, Gen had to admit, but the kids were scared of him when he drank, and when he wasn't home, working in Melbourne within his family business, the small family of three - plus Bentley, the dog - were at peace.
As Gen searched for answers, sometimes with Jesse Johns, the original policeman from Amber's disappearance, sometimes by herself, she became frustrated with the lack of evidence, and the secrets that she knew were well hidden. But slowly she came closer to the truth, and while she knew she herself was in danger, she would let nothing harm the kids. And not knowing who to trust was turning her inside out - would she find Amber's killer? And could she unearth the many secrets that surrounded her?
Dying to Know is the first I've read by Aussie author Rae Cairns and it was outstanding crime fiction set in Sydney! Fast paced and electric, I found myself so absorbed in the story that I had no idea what was going on around me. Gen is a fabulous character, with Lily (at times a typical teenager) and Charlie (filled with unstoppable energy) all written so well I felt I knew them. I'll be looking for the author's debut, The Good Mother now. Highly recommended.
My goodness, what a book! I loved The Good Mother last year from Rae Cairns but I think Dying to Know is even better. A thrilling crime book set in Sydney - absolutely my kind of story. Be prepared, this is one addictive read. I didn't want to put it down and was kinda sad when it ended.
Gen has been the primary carer for her niece and nephew for the past 12 years, since her sister, Amber, went out for nappies and never came home. She will do anything for these kids, her life has been on hold. Now some new evidence has been discovered and Gen needs to know what happened to her sister. It will take her on a dangerous journey, but one she is prepared to travel for the truth. She might not like what she finds out, but she has to know.
Gen is a bike riding force to be reckoned with. Nothing will get in her way in her quest, nothing. Amber's husband begs her to stop but she can't. But she starts to put the kids in danger with her endless questions. Will she be able to find out the answers she needs?
I can't recommend this this book more. Thanks so much to Harper Collins for sending me an advanced copy to read. Published on April 5th, go grab a copy and lose yourself in this dark and emotional story like I did.

12 years ago, budding journalist Geneva received a horrifying phone call - her terrified sister Amber was locked in the boot of a moving car and begging for help. Amber was never heard from again. Since that night, Geneva's life has revolved around caring for Amber's children Lily and Charlie, despite the unpredictable behaviour of their father Hugh. When Sergeant Jesse turns up with shocking news about Amber, Geneva becomes desperate for answers while everybody else wants to move on. But she is uncovering dangerous secrets...
When I started the book I was right into it but I must admit as I went on I was not as engaged; it's hard to pin down exactly why. Geneva has been Amber's children's primary caregiver despite their father Hugh being around - she has been an unpaid carer and housekeeper since Amber's disappearance. There was basically no redeeming features to Hugh, he was very unlikable. I liked that Geneva was determined to get to the bottom of what happened to Amber, but it seemed out of character that she insisted on continuing her investigation when it was putting herself and then the children in danger, particularly when she was so devoted to the children. It is a gripping and fast-paced storyline with a lot of action, as well as being an easy read to fly through the pages. Overall: I liked this one well enough and the majority of other readers have rated it very highly so it's definitely worth reading if the synopsis interests you.
Thank you Harper Collins Australia for sending me a copy of this book to review.
Its so refreshing to see a book with a different plot added to the story. I read thrillers, true crime and crime books and havent come across this plot for a long time. I love a missing person and cold case trope, so this book ticked all the boxes for me.
It was the perfect mix of both character and action driven storyline. We get to know the family through Geneva's eyes . There is the cocky , arrogant BIL Hugh who I strongly disliked for the way he treated his children and Geneva. Lily and Charlie who are Ambers kids, and of course Geneva Ambers sister. I connected the most to Geneva as she never stopped trying to solve Ambers disappearance to honour her sister as well as raising her kids.
The second half of the book is dedicated to the action. It certainly was riveting and I couldnt stop reading. The timeline was then ( 12 years ago) when Amber was abducted to now (present ) when the crime has new revelations that need to be investigated. 2 other aspects that I really enjoyed was the forbidden romance , and the mention of Hoxton Park High School where I grew up. Highly recommend.
⭐️4.5 Stars⭐️ What a wild ride, I loved this fast paced Australian crime story set in Sydney! Dying to Know by Rae Cairns is a highly suspenseful mystery combining family drama, murder, illegal activities and a strong female lead that rides motor bikes.
I admired the books main character Geneva and how she held it together throughout her ordeals and her caring relationship with her niece and nephew. Her sister Amber was abducted and never seen again and Gen will never rest until she finds out the truth about what really happened to her sister. All she knows is Amber rang on her mobile while locked in the boot of a moving car, crying out for help.
Geneva (Gen) has devoted the last twelve years of her life to be the primary caregiver for her sister’s motherless children. Their father is barely around for his family and wants Gen to stop her continuous search for his wife and digging up the past!
When Gen unravels the truth years later it threatens to destroy the people she loves, sometimes truth can be deadly.
A great book to binge on! This is Rae Cairn’s second book, The Good Mother was her debut and I’ll be sure to look out for that one to read now!

Thank you to the wonderful team at Harper Collins Australia for a copy of the book.
Known for her ability to weave deep feeling into her thrillers about normal people facing trying events, Dying to Know is the second electrifying crime novel from Rae Cairns. Dying to Know is an unyielding tale of a lost mother and the crime that surrounds her disappearance. This latest Rae Cairns release is an irresistible thriller display.
Over a decade ago aspiring journalist Geneva Leighton’s life changed instantly thanks to a phone call from her sister. Geneva’s sister was trapped in the boot of an unknown car and her call for help has haunted Geneva ever since. Amber was unable to be located following this desperate call and Geneva has never given up on her sister. In the days and years that has followed Amber’s disappearance, Geneva has taken up full-time care of Amber’s children. With their father playing a backseat role in their care, it has been left up to Geneva to pick up the pieces of their broken lives. Geneva vows to track down the perpetrator of this crime and hopefully discover the truth as to what happened to Amber. When the authorities churn up some vital new information about Amber’s case Geneva is put on high alert. Can she make things right for Amber, her children and family?
I consider myself to be very lucky when it comes to receiving quality Australian literature, in particular crime and thriller novels from our ever-increasing crop of talent in this genre. Rae Cairns is a fairly new face to this category of fiction, but she is fast becoming a leading face in the genre thanks to the success of her first novel The Good Mother and Dying to Know. I predict this new one will be a sure-fire hit.
I felt an immediate magnetic connection to Geneva, the main character leading the charge in Dying to Know. Geneva is brave, fierce and unforgiving but she is also very caring. This is shown by her unyielding care and protection of her niece and nephew when their mum disappears. Tough as nails on the outside and soft on the inside, Geneva was a great figure to follow. Geneva’s guilt but also her unrelenting determination to gain justice for her lost sister was admirable. I was one hundred percent behind Geneva’s cause. This part of the novel was intriguing and full of twists. It was also my favourite element of the Dying to Know.
With a small taste of romance, plenty of family feuds, meaningful relationships, some suspect bad guys, suspicion aplenty and danger on every corner, Dying to Know proved to be a gripping read. The investigation into Amber’s case moves and rolls extremely well so the reader never feels uninterested. From the moment the dramatic prologue was dished out, through to the explosive finish, this one keeps you guessing. Despite the fact that I read copious amounts of fiction, especially in the crime thriller field, I found Dying to Know to be wholly satisfying.

Dying To Know, Rae Cairns sophomore suspense novel, opens with a dramatic prologue. In a shocking phone call, wife and mother of two young children, Amber, reveals she is trapped in the boot of a car after being abducted while running a late night errand. Her younger sister, Geneva, can only listen helplessly as Amber makes a desperate attempt to free herself and then suddenly goes silent.
Shifting to twelve years later, Gen’s slim hope that Amber will one day return is dashed when the police reveal her sister’s remains have been found. The news is emotionally devastating not only for Gen but also her now sixteen year old niece, Lily, and twelve year old nephew, Charlie, whom she has helped their oft-absent father, Hugh, to raise. Though the police insist the discovery is a dead end, Gen is determined to find answers.
Moving at a good pace, Dying To Know is a taut mystery thriller that sees Gen, plagued by misplaced guilt, take plenty of risks in order to solve her sister’s murder. She’s quite fearless in her investigation at times, but I thought her actions were largely believable. While early information Gen uncovers suggests that Amber was not a random target, it takes her some time to piece together the motive that identifies those responsible. Savvy genre readers will probably be a step or two ahead, but this doesn’t detract from the tension as Gen gets closer to the deadly truth.
Gen’s greatest vulnerability is Lily and Charlie, and I thought the relationship between the three of them was well portrayed. Her tenuous relationship with the children’s father and his wealthy, image-conscious family, provokes additional emotion and drama. I liked the support Gen’s best friend, Toni, a broadcast journalist, and the original case officer, Sergeant Jesse Johns, offer her, as well as the touch of romance in the plot.
A satisfying, well paced Australian crime fiction novel, Dying To Know is gripping read.
ARC copy kindly received from Harper Collins Australia for an honest review.
This was my first book by Rae Cairns and it certainly will not be my last. The storyline and characters kept me guessing, and by the time I got the end, the truth as to what had happened to Amber did surprise me. The ending also made me feel a bit emotional.
I really liked Gen and her drive to find the truth for her sister and to be there and look after her niece and nephew. I truly despised Hugh and his family, and the biker aspect intrigued me.
There was plenty going on this book, never a dull moment and I can't wait to read more from this author. Highly recommend!
Dying To Know by Aussie author Rae Cairns is a fast-paced crime/thriller set in Sydney. The suspense throughout this novel keeps the reader turning the pages wanting to know how the book is going to end. Now looking forward to reading her other book and any other books she might and hopefully write soon. Recommended.
Ever since her sister was abducted whilst grocery shopping, Geneva (Gen) had never lost hope that Amber would be found alive. Placing her ambitious career in journalism on hold, Gen stepped up to help raise her niece and nephew, something she's still committed to twelve years on.
Now, Amber's remains have been discovered on a partly demolished rural property, just outside of Sydney. Not accepting that the property owner was responsible for her sister's death, Gen embarks on her search for the truth.
What she unearths is something that she shouldn't have messed with in the first place. Soon, Gen's backed into a corner where motorcycle outlaws rule and money speaks volumes. No-one can be trusted, and cover ups have the power to destroy the lives of everyone Gen loves.
This was a wild ride from the get go. Gen is one of those female protagonists that is kick ass and won't take no for an answer! Her fierce love for Amber, Lily and Charlie proves just how far she'll go to seek justice.
Red flags were flying as soon as I met Hugh, Gen's brother-in-law. He's one sly snake that thinks it's okay to control and even threaten Gen time and time again. His privileged family aren't any better!
Thankfully, we have an angsty love affair as a side plot. Damn it Gen! You KNOW that your hunk of a police sergeant wants you BAD but you're just one massive tease!! Gal, pull yourself together and just admit that you're into Jesse as well!!
This addictive, crime thriller is set in Sydney, Australia. Genevieve (Gen) has been the primary care giver to her niece an nephew after her sister went out for groceries and didn’t return - 12 years ago.
Gen puts her own personal career and life on hold while she takes on looking after her sisters children, trying to uncover what happened to her sister and dealing with her unstable brother in law.
As Gen starts to unravel family secrets, it becomes evident there much more to the story than she was initially led to believe. I adored Gen’s love for her changes and her fearless, “go get them” attitude - an evocative portrayal of a strong female protagonist.
A twisty, utterly compelling read - I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended.
Geneva (Gen) is spending time with her sister, Amber, when she needs to duck out to the shops. Gen stays to mind her children, but when Amber doesn't come home for an age Gen begins to worry. Then she receives a phone call. Amber is locked in the boot of a car, someone has taken her. We see the story now, a decade later, where Gen is still searching for her and helping to care for her two children, with their unreliable father. Then news comes, they have found new evidence and it catapults Gen into a renewed search for the truth about what happened that night. But as her search continues, it is clear the truth won't keep her safe.
This was fast moving and suspenseful, with secrets being uncovered throughout. I liked the mystery surrounding the supporting characters and the backstory that also unfolded. Such an enjoyable novel. 4.5*
Another page turning novel from Rae Cairns. I was fortunate enough to read her first novel The Good Mother when she self-published it and I was so excited for her that she was picked up by a traditional publisher who gave her a 2 book deal, it was so well deserved. This new book is just as good as her first and tells the story of Geneva who takes a desperate phone call from her sister who is locked in the boot of a car and going who knows where. After her sister disappears Geneva takes on the mothering of her niece and nephew after their father becomes very unstable. When new evidence appears Geneva is determined to find out what happened to her sister and get the case re-opened.
What follows is a fast paced story of blackmail, corruption, motor cycle gangs and that never give up attitude which raced to a very satisfying ending. Rae Cairns is an excellent writer and a new face on the Australian crime fiction scene, and I highly recommend both her books to crime fans - you wont be disappointed!
Thanks go to Net Galley and Harper Collins/Harlequin for the complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Oh my goodness, was I dying to know! This is such a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat thriller…right from the opening scene! Maybe I still don’t read enough thrillers, but watching Gen solve the crime was SO cool; out there tracking her sister’s perpetrators but also having to be back to do the school run, worrying about ‘how the hell could she navigate them safety through’…I wish I had her sass and tenacity! This novel took me right into MC and one percenters...I could not turn the pages fast enough, whew!
DNF cliche. Stilted. Don’t know how to write children. Dialogue was unrealistic. Not compelling. Tried to incorporate emotions without understanding how to write them. Felt like I was reading a step by step how to write characters draft. Barely got through 3 chapters before I got too angry at bad and stilted writing
At the readers retreat for my online bookclub recently, Rae Cairns was one of the authors in attendance and she did a reading from this book which meant I immediately had to buy it.
For 12 years, Geneva’s life has revolved around her missing sister Amber. Not just trying to find her, refusing to give up, but also taking care of Amber’s two children, who are now 16 and 12. Amber’s husband didn’t cope well in the days after her disappearance/kidnapping and Geneva moved in to care for the children and never left. Hugh is a member of a prominent family, with an Important Job and he spends a lot of time at work and away on business so the arrangement has mostly suited them both. Geneva does however, think Hugh should be more involved with the kids and Hugh may have been grateful for her assistance once upon a time but is now antagonistic and resentful and uses removing Geneva’s access to the children as a threat to get her to do whatever he wants.
Geneva is contacted by Jesse Johns, once a young detective on Amber’s case. He has news and although everyone wants Geneva to let it go, she can’t. Her sister deserves justice and if the police can’t get it for her, Geneva isn’t afraid to go out and seek it for her. Despite Jesse’s pleas for her not to, Geneva isn’t about to trust him after he disappeared on her over a decade ago. Letting Jesse back in would be dangerous and she has other things to worry about, like Hugh becoming even more unpredictable than normal. Although he was cleared all those years ago, Geneva can’t help but suspect everyone now…and she doesn’t know who she can trust.
This is fast paced and gripping, with Geneva giving me at least forty-seven heart attacks with her actions. Geneva is such a wonderful character, incredibly strong and determined. She and Amber were incredibly close growing up and into their adulthood, until Amber was taken in a supermarket carpark. Geneva also has a lot of feelings of guilt, because Amber had asked her to go and get nappies and Geneva, then working on a big story, hadn’t wanted to take the time out to make the trip. In everything she does, it’s like she tries to somehow make that up to Amber, although she knows she can’t. She loves and mothers Amber’s kids like they are her own, but without fully investing in that type of relationship, because it feels disrespectful to her sister. Geneva has never given up on finding Amber alive and bringing her home as well, putting hours and hours into appeals and maintaining a presence on social media to keep her in the public’s mind.
I loved Geneva’s relationship with her niece and nephew, who are very similar in age to my own kids. Lily, her 16yo niece, is troubled and going through a lot, which Geneva often feels helpless about. Charlie, the younger child, has no memory of his mother as he was just a baby when she went missing and so there are times when Geneva mourns his….lack of mourning, if that makes sense. I think it really hurts her, that he doesn’t remember his mother, and that she is the only mother he’s ever known. For Geneva, there’s something not right about that, even though she loves him dearly. I felt like Rae Cairns nailed the troubled teenager as well, the push-pull factor of them. Lily is equal parts desperate for love and attention and for the people in her life to see her and also a bit resentful of it, a bit antagonistic at times, wanting her independence, etc. It’s an interesting age, not an adult, not a child but still somehow comprising being a little bit of both.
This kept me guessing the whole way. There were things that I did not guess or predict but each reveal made all the pieces come together so well. I also really enjoyed the small sprinkling of romance and the complex past between Geneva and Jesse and the misunderstanding that had occurred. A book is only improved by a little bit of romance for me and this one worked well but did not overshadow the main objective, which was always Geneva’s love for Amber, her desire for justice and also her goal to love and protect Amber’s children.
This was excellent and I’ll definitely be reading Rae Cairns’ other book as well as keeping an eye out for her future releases.
Dying to Know is a compulsive, page-turning thriller. For 12 years former journalist Genevieve Leighton has been searching for her sister while caring for her niece and nephew. Now she has the answer she most feared. Amber is dead. But Genevieve is determined to know the how and why and get justice for her sister. In the process, she uncovers devastating family secrets and takes on dangerous bikies, putting herself and everyone she loves in danger. Rae Cairns’ second novel is as absorbing and well crafted as her first Ned Kelly nominated book The Good Mother. Highly recommended.
I had never read this author before and enjoyed it it kept up a reasonable pace throughout and had a bit of a twist in it I would recommend it but in my opinion it didn’t reach the heights I thought it would
Thank you Rae and Harper Collins for sending us a copy to read and review. I am drawn to talent and Rae has it in spades, the pages come alive and the strong narrative demands attention. An awesome story is sandwiched between a very enticing prologue and a well executed finish. A gripping tale that will keep you guessing and glued to the pages. Gen has sacrificed a lot to be a primary care giver, she has raised her sister’s children and had to endure the antics of her in laws. Her sister was abducted and murdered. Gen will not rest till she knows the truth and find out who killed Amber. Rekindling a connection with the sergeant from the case, she embarks on a mission that is life threatening, severs relationships and jeopardises her connection to the kids. As she unravels the truth she finds links to underworld figures and realises the murder was not random. This exciting thriller has a warmth and eerie evilness that osmotically permeate throughout. A cast that is well written and that evoke spikes of emotion add valuable structure to a plot. The endorsements by very talented authors highlight the quality but I had my suspicions this would be very good based on the authors first book.
As in The Good Mother (which I loved), Rae Cairns has served up a smart, sexy thriller featuring a gutsy heroine who will stop at nothing to protect the children in her life. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, especially the familiar Sydney settings. Already looking forward to whatever Rae writes next!
I tore through this book in one day, stopping only to eat and answer the doorbell for the three separate parcel deliveries that arrived today (good thing hubby wasn't home 😂).
When new information comes to light about Geneva Leighton's missing sister, everyone believes the case is closed. Everyone except Geneva. She is far from satisfied with the evidence that police present her with, so she conducts her own investigation into the 12-year-old mystery to find out what really happened to her sister. What she doesn't expect to do is create unrest within a secretive motorcycle club and her brother-in-law's family, unintentionally unleashing a deadly game of cat and mouse.
This is a fast-paced, action-packed crime thriller set in suburban Australia. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through, worried about what would happen to Geneva and her niece and nephew, while also feeling really sad about her sister.
This book lives up to its striking cover and all the author endorsements on it. It's dramatic, suspenseful, thrilling and addictive. It even has some romance. It's got it all!
Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this book.
Oh my gosh, what a book! Rae Cairns knows how to write a story that will hook you straight away and keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way through.
After the disappearance of her sister Amber, Gen stepped up as a mother figure to her neice and nephew and has never given up hope that her sister will return. When her remains are found, Gen is desperate to find out who is responsible and get justice for her sister. What she doesn't know is that she'll be putting herself and the children at risk trying to uncover the truth. She has trouble knowing who she can trust and finds herself constantly pushed in varying directions.
The story is action-packed and full of drama and mystery. It was enjoyable trying to put the puzzle pieces together while I was reading. Another fantastic book by Rae Cairns.
First of all, a big thank you to @harpercollinsaustralia for sending me a copy of this book in return for my honest review. This one is a bit late, the postie delivered it to a neighbour so I only received it recently!
When I did receive it and opened it though, I was hooked. A wild ride and a fast paced murder that had me literally Dying to Know the answers. I do have to say, I don’t know how I did it but I did guess the perpetrator pretty early on.
An excellent suspense novel for a cosy reading day in.
A good page turner with sinister undertones. There were uncomfortable sections of the book - what a person will put up with to stay close to those she loves - Geneva is looking after her missing sister's children in her sister's home despite the unpredictable behaviour of the children's father. She continues to search for her sister despite the police hitting a dead end in their investigation and against the wishes of her sister's husband. Smart and suspenseful!
3.5 stars. The first third/half of the book was fast paced, very engaging and believable however as the plot evolved it lost its gloss. It became a little bit "girly" – tears repeatedly with exaggerated 'caring'. The plot didn't ring true to me; it seemed confected/contrived. The heroine seemed inconsistent – one minute amazingly perceptive, the next minute a dumb arse. It lacked deep characterisation that delivers insight into people – it was a bit superficial – but most of this genré is. A good book but not the wow factor.
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book for an honest review.
Wow...what a mind bender. I think I suspected everyone at some point. Thought the ending was really well written and tied it all up nicely. Highly recommend.
Dying to Know by Rae Cairns At the beginning of the novel, Geneva receives a call from her terrified sister who is in the back of a vehicle after being kidnapped. 12 years later, Geneva is still haunted by the call. A development in the case prompts her to find answers once and for all. I enjoyed trying to solve this mystery while clues were revealed throughout. I did guess some but not all. The story had me engaged, hating some characters, and on the edge of my seat at times.
Wow! This book was absolutely addictive and I did not want to put it down.
Twelve years ago Geneva’s sister Amber doesn’t return home after a quick trip to get nappies from the supermarket. Geneva was getting worried when she had a telephone call from her sister, terrified and in a boot of a moving car. Amber was never heard from again – leaving two small children and a husband at home. Geneva has stopped at nothing to find out what happened to her sister. What happened to her that fateful night?
Gripping from page one this suspenseful thriller just keeps on giving. I absolutely loved Geneva as a main character – she was a strong female lead putting her family first and needing the answers yesterday on what happened to Amber. I could have jumped through the pages and smacked Hugh up the side of the face many times, his demeanor really annoyed me but that was definitely the point. I 100% recommend reading this book if you love crime thrillers, it will keep you up all night turning the pages to get to the bottom of what happened to Amber.
I cannot wait to read Rae’s first book – Good Mother that is sitting pretty on my shelves. I think I have just found my new auto buy author.
And a huge thank you to Harper Collins Australia for sending me a gifted copy of this book for my honest book review.
The end of the book was brilliant. I really liked the way all the characters interacted with each other and the revelations throughout the story. It was gripping and in the end I almost felt sorry for certain characters as well.
