First Story a Disappointment; Grammar & Usage Terrible
This collection contains 5 Christmas-themed books. I have read the first book. I had planned to read the rest, as I love Christmas romances, but I was SOOO disappointed in the editing that I decided to not continue with the collection. As a proofreader and copyeditor myself, multiple glaring language errors severely detract from my enjoyment of a book; all I do is just keep watching for the next error instead of focusing on character and plot. The first two stories had missing words (sometimes a pivotal one where it was hard to figure out meaning), run-on sentences of a variety of types (comma splices and sentences where the required comma before a coordinating conjunction between two otherwise complete “sentences” was missing), and other incorrect punctuation. I did receive an ARC copy, but this is a collection of previously published books, so there is no excuse for bad (or no) editing. Honestly, the author could have read the manuscripts out loud and caught most of the missing words!
Here’s a review of the 1st story in the book, which I read completely.
The Christmas Competition: I wasn’t wild about this one. The heroine was very sympathetic from the start, so I was rooting for her from the start. I went back and forth about the hero for a while. He could be inconsiderate and rude for very little reason, not good for a romantic hero Yet, he was also a wonderfully indulgent and loving uncle and usually a thoughtful brother to his sister who was definitely down on her luck. As the story progressed, I felt like the author was painting herself into a corner with what was happening between the couple as well as in the competition, a large cash-prize contest to see who had the best Christmas-decorated house in their small town; it was hard to guess how it could work out on both fronts. The climax and denouement were surprising, but not in a good way. Two disturbed people threatened the couple and the competition. Their interference seemed to come out of nowhere. Not enough foreshadowing. I don’t like those kinds of surprises in books.
I received a free digital copy of this collection, but that did not affect my review.
