Once again, this is Christian fantasy, meaning there will be heavy faith themes. Don't like, don't read.

5+ stars (7/10 hearts). Dude. This. Was. Epicness.

When I heard how long this book was, my first thought was, “Whoa, girl… isn’t that a little… large?” But y’all. 100% of it is needed and amazing and it just flew by. It was so good.

For starters, MADISYN CARLIN IS LIKE THE MOST AMAZING AT WORLDBUILDING. This is just SO amazing. I love, love, love, how she built of off “IRON” and “CROWN” and then just created this amazing seaside country that just has Denton repulsed and horrified and bewildered and they think the exact same of him… I mean, Denton having a fit about fish every. time. just kept cracking me up.

Secondly, I gotta call out the writing style because Carlin did it AGAIN and it’s just amazing and so snarky and hilarious and one of my favourite styles ever. Y’all should just stop reading right now and go buy her books because the style is so good. But if that doesn’t convince you… THE CHARACTERS, MAN. Ohhhh my heart. Okay so I already loved Denton in “IRON” but did he ever break me here. He was the sweetest, most broken, and snarkiest baby boi ever. I related to him so much—the thoughts he’d think were my thoughts—and it hurt, it hurt so badly because I knew exactly how he felt. His arc was wonderful…
And then there’s Nerissa. I related so much to Nerissa as well, having fought (and still fighting) those battles as well. She was such a darling. They were the cutest couple and their banter was epic. And then there’s Afya, whom I just wanted to hug and protect, and Edver, who was just so hilarious and adorable (*coughs* sorry, tough guy) and Jonah and Noko and literally everyone else. Carlin creates the best, funniest, most vivid, and heart-touching characters ever. I can’t forget Daffy and Elberta, the most realistic little sisters ever and both hilarious in their own ways. And I loved seeing Carter and Red again…

I am aware I am fangirling excessively. But this book deserves it. I haven’t even touched on the plot yet. OH MY STARS, THE PLOT. What a rollercoaster. What suspense, what drama, what excellent pacing! The kidnapping and slavery tore at my heart, the enemies-to-lovers of D&N was perfectly worth waiting 400 pages for, the waves of excitement and lulls of calm created the perfect pacing that kept me glued to the book but also relaxed. I also have to say I love how Carlin sandwiches her very intense scenes with so much epic comedic relief. I don’t even know what to say for the plot without spoiling it all; but it was really, really amazing. The perfect sequel to IRON.

But the THEME, guys!!! Oh, the themes were the best part of all. I have never met anyone else tackle the topic of Christians who ARE saved and KNOW they’re saved, but genuinely don’t think God loves them and that they have to earn His approval/love but can’t possibly because of how flawed and messy they are. I lived that lie for over ten years. I was all of 21 years old when I realized the truth. This book showed the message I needed a year ago so gently and beautifully and passionately. It’s a life changer. The second message of surrendering control and living without fear is one I am still struggling to learn today, and again it was told so well.

So, basically, this book is almost as good as “IRON.” Almost. And everyone should read it. And Madisyn Carlin just cemented her place as one of my all-time favourite indie authors and one of my rare 100% auto-buy authors.

A Favourite Quote: “How? ... How could He possibly want me? I’ve allowed children to be harmed. I’m not worth saving.”
“In whose opinion? ... Yours? You, who know very little about anything? Or the Beginning’s, Who knows everything about everything because He created everything? Do you see what I’m trying to say, boy? We can let our perspectives define how we view life and the Beginning, but they can’t change the truth. And the truth is you are His. You are His son. Nothing you do can change that. He makes wretches heirs and turns sinners into saints. You are saved. Your past cannot compete with His mercy.”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “One of you will have to climb. We are unable to.” A few minutes later, Denton was scaling the rope hooked just within the open window. He just adored how one of you was code for, the one who has poor upper body strength and who really isn’t fond of heights. ...
“It’ll be easy, boy. Just climb the rope, use your weight to provide a push against the wall, and walk up the side.” Because walking up the side was so easy. What did Lemuel think he was? A spider? The burn in Denton’s shoulders assured him he was most certainly not an arachnid.

Another excellent installment in The Redwyn Chronicles!

Denton and Nerissa were both great characters with realistic flaws that played so well into the themes of unconditional love and trusting God. Madisyn Carlin's novels have excellent faith content, and KEY was no exception. It was epic! But back to Denton and Nerissa ... These poor characters went through such a hard time. And I loved that Red, Carter, and Chamonix (the main characters from IRON) made an appearance at the end of the book.

The plot was packed with action, adventure, and high stakes; and the touch of romance was sweet and clean. Also, the humor was the best. I was highly impressed by the worldbuilding woven into the plot.

Overall, KEY was an exciting read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and non-magical fantasy stories. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Uh, wow!!!! Wow!! Wow!!! That was incredible, and the message of that story hit way too hard, was wincing with Nerissa over here. Wow!

Characters:
Denton!!!! I loved him in Iron and I love him even more now!!!!!! His conflict, his dedication, his arch!!!! My heart!!! I love this guy!!!
Nerissa! My goodness, that is the most I have related to a female MC in a long time...like a loooooooong time! It was hitting really hard and I was just like, wow!
Edver, Afya, Daffy, Elberta!!! My goodness, all the side characters just yes!!!! All the mentions or Red and what would have thought of someone had me cracking up! It was so good!
Also, Uncle Morris, it was funny because my brother's name is Matthew Morris, so I kept seeing him when Uncle Morris was mentioned which did not go at all...lol...my brother is a tall very white guy..lol...and Morris is short and dark-skinned so that kept me tickled...haha...

Themes:
That God's love is unconditional, that no matter what we do, He will forgive and love us. That no matter where we are God is in control and that EVERY SINGLE LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL! From the smallest baby to the oldest person, all life is beautiful and a gift! I love the themes Madisyn weaves into her stories they always are so good!
I especially loved the theme for Nerissa about our worry doing nothing and needing to hand everything over to God is was beautiful and definitely something I needed to be reminded of again!! Again...and again...

Romance:
There wasn't a whole lot, just characters liking talking to each other and growing to like each other. Two brief kisses at the end and overall it was just really well-handled and beautiful! I loved the story so much!!!

This is a non-magical fantasy retelling.

Overall:
I loved this story so much! And will look forward to reading again in the future! I love, love, love the messages of the story the beautiful way Madisyn explains her themes, and the passion with which she delivers them! This story is gorgeous and touching! The action is intense and suspenseful and just absolutely fantastic!!! I cannot wait for the next installment of the Redwyn Chronicles!!!!!

Ohhhh, this book! <3<3<3 I fell in love with Denton back in IRON, and if I had one disappointment with the way that book ended, it was that his part of the story didn't feel quite resolved. Obviously because it wasn't over; he had his own story coming, and what a story it was! Watching him struggle with guilt--some possibly deserved but much more definitely not--was so heartbreaking, and I wanted to hug him so many times, or to tell him that certain people didn't really despise him like he thought they did. <\3 I admired how hard he worked to set things right even as I pleaded with him to see where his real worth lay. Basically, Denton came into the book already a favorite, and that position was only strengthened through the whole thing.

Nerissa surprised me because I tend to find myself annoyed with characters who are overly introspective and fearful. (Is it because I personally struggle in those areas? Noooo...why would you think that? :P) But as much as I sighed over her struggles at times, I wasn’t annoyed to the point of not liking her character. And some of her fears were well grounded, if others were less so. But I appreciated her eventual growth and learning to let go, as hard as it was.

Other characters...Edver I adored, especially in company with Denton! XD Afya I wasn't sure how to take at first, but I was intrigued to dig into her story, and it didn't disappoint. Daffy was cute, and Elberta was a a trip! I liked Nerissa's parents, and I loved Uncle Morris. <3 Oh, and the boys!!! <3<3<3 The other villagers I mostly liked, except for everyone's suspicions of Denton. I mean, they made sense to a point, but they were obviously carried too far after he had proved himself.

Dealing with the traffickers was obviously intense, and I'm not sure I made quite all of the right connections, but I was certainly never bored! I loved the worldbuilding of Marteris and the way it was reflected in the characters' attitudes and expressions. Poor Denton--so much fish! (: The different cultures and their understandings (or misunderstandings) of each other were very well drawn and true to life. And I enjoyed seeing them come to know and understand each other better. Also, I loved the way Red's attitudes and reactions crept into so many conversations she wasn't even there for! XD

And then--CARTER!!! Just when I was preparing for a sweet ending with a bit of lingering wistfulness, he showed up and turned my heart to mush with almost the first thing out of his mouth. <3<3<3<3<3 I wasn't ever upset with what he hadn’t managed to express at the end of IRON; he was pretty shell-shocked and had a lot of other things to think about at the time. But just the fact that he came--and the way he claimed the relationship and teased like nothing had ever happened--and the talk they eventually had--oh, we needed Carter so bad, and it was so much more wonderful than I even hoped! I already loved Carter to death, but after this I love him even more. <3

Basically, this book took my already high hopes and expectations and completely eclipsed them. So, so, so good!

THIS BOOK!!! I love this book SO much! This is definitely my favorite in this series! Everything was amazing! The writing, the banter, the scenery, the CHARACTERS! I adore this book and these characters and I’m a bit sad I finished this book because it is just SO GOOD and I didn’t want the story to end!

This is one of my FAVORITE retellings EVER!!! Think Rapunzel meets The Little Mermaid (without mermaids) that is non-magical and Christian and is set in a small Irish town overlooking the ocean (this book is not Irish, it’s set in a fantasy world, but for some reason I kept imagining this world as an Irish-like country (which is reflected in the Pinterest board) XD)!



Writing:
The writing as always is phenomenal. Madisyn has such a beautiful gift with writing. Once again the banter was incredible (though less because Red wasn’t in this book much but it was still incredible). This one felt like more of an emotional book. It was a beautiful journey and I was tearing up at the end (my eyes were all blurry and I am so proud of the characters))!

Marteris (where the book is set) is such a beautiful place. All the ocean scenes were beautiful. I felt so transported with this book in a way I haven’t felt in a book for a long time. I felt I could hear the waves, smell the sea, and I felt like I was there with the characters. The scenery and descriptions were *chefs kiss*!

I loved the element of the tower (going back to the Rapunzel retelling) and the special key. It is such a cool idea and beautifully executed! All the scenery (the towers and the cliffs and the sea) and every element was amazing! Just…you need to read this book because I’m not describing it well and it's amazing and you just need to read this book!



Characters:
DENTON!!! My heart! I love Denton’s character so much! There were so many moments my heart ached for him and made me want to cry. I really wanted to give him a hug and tell him he is loved. He had such a heartbreaking and beautiful journey. He really struggles with himself and his worth and believing he could be loved. He had so many scares and heartbreaking moments from when he was young (which we see some of in IRON) and words have hurt him so much. I wanted to cry every time he flinched when he thought someone was angry because of his father and brother (who are awful). I loved how he was a hero (even though he didn’t believe it). He is such an incredible character! I want a Denton in my life. <3
Something else I love about his character is that even when he is afraid he will do what is right, even if that means jumping into his fear. *Spoiler: that moment when Denton jumps into the water (he did it three different times) to save Elbert! Ahh! My heart! I was cheering so much! I love him!*
I loved that near the end he comes to know who he is in the Beginning (God). He still struggles but he learned to trust in God and know that he is the Beginning’s child (that brought tears to my eyes).

Nerissa! I love Nerissa! She is such a wonderful character and so relatable! I love how she battled in herself with her fears and trusting the Beginning (God). She had fears and they threatened to overtake her but again and again she and others reminded her of scripture. She loves her sisters with everything in her and change is very difficult for her (both things I can really relate to her in). Even though she struggles, she is such a pillar of faith. Her faith is so encouraging. I love her and Denton’s relationship with each other. She had to trust the Beginning and learn to trust in Denton. It was a slow friendship (and relationship) built on trust.
One of my favorite scenes of Nerissa’s is when she is battling in her mind to show love. She feels a calling to love someone and it is a struggle for her. I really loved that scene.

I’m just going to come out and say it. This book is my FAVORITE Rapunzel book retelling ever! Hands down this is my favorite! Even though it is more a side story this is just incredible. I also really loved how it was a side story and not the main plot. The side character was the “Rapunzel” character and not the main one. Afya is such a sweet and troubled character. She is sweet and caring and has been put through so much but then she has a joy in her that is really sweet. I loved her and Edver together! I also loved all the banter between Edver and Denton! They felt like old friends!

Another thing I loved about this retelling was that I didn’t know what was going to happen. It was just enough the Rapunzel story that it was familiar but completely its own thing and kept me on the edge of my seat. How the tower (or towers) were used and how the story stayed true to the story but reminded itself was amazing. I did like (well I didn’t like her but I was glad she was included story wise) that there was still a “Mother Gothel” character who was just as awful and menacing as the original (and maybe even more villainous).

The children! I loved all the children and each of them holds a special place in my heart! My favorite of them all was definitely sweet little Noko! He is so sweet and brave and I am really hoping he shows up in the next (or one of next) book(s)! Jonah is so sweet! I loved the friendship between the two boys and how they ended up *spoiler: rescuing Denton*!
Nerissa’s sisters are so cute and funny! Elbert and Daffy are precious! I loved how fast they warmed up to Denton and saw him as a hero before he ever thought of himself as that. I love them.

I loved that Morris (or Uncle Morris) was such a pillar of faith and how he was a kind fatherly figure to Denton. He saw the good in Denton and was kind and loving. I loved how he answered Denton’s questions and helped him regain confidence in the Beginning (God) and helped restore his faith! That whole scene was such a beautiful moment!

Nerissa’s mamma was amazing! I love how this book had a strong mother figure who was loving and strong and this pillar to her family. She is a mother and a wife and is very strong. She isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and she will fight for her family. She is also always pointing to God and putting her faith in God and His plans. She is such a good mother and I loved seeing that in a book.

Slight Spoilers (for IRON): I loved that Carter came for Denton! That was such a sweet moment and how Carter actually loves his brother. Char is pregnant!!! That made me so happy! I love Char and Carter together and knowing they are having a baby just makes me so happy!!!

I could keep going but I think I’ve rambled enough for now. XD


Note on content:
Once again Madisyn’s books are clean though I will make a note on one point. KEY (and IRON) deal with the topic of human trafficking. It is done in a really tasteful manner and isn't graphic or too descript. It is a major part of this book with many people being kidnapped and trafficked. That is the “battle” in this book. The characters are working to stop the trafficking and save the children and that is the main plot. I think it was handled really well but that is something to note.

*Cleanness: this is a really clean book!
Romance is completely clean (there actually was a kiss in this book and it made me SO happy and brought tears to my eyes)! The language was also clean (it was said people cursed, there were some insults, and pasny was used semi frequently).
The only things to really look out for is violence, fight scenes, injuries, blood, some beatings, talk of abuse (physical and emotional), kidnappings, child & human trafficking, murder, burning down of entire villages, and loss.
Otherwise, this is a clean book and I HIGHLY recommend reading!

My Review: 5 out of 5 stars– *****

Characters: Man, I LOVE these characters. I fell in love with Denton immediately. I cringed, almost sobbed, and rooted for him all the way. Nerissa (can I just say that I LOOOOOVE her name?!?!) was one of those characters that I could relate with, even though I got a little agitated at her when she was wary of Denton. I mean, c’mon, the man’s AMAZING! But she was so sweet and protective of her sisters- I loved that. Daffy and Elberta was so cute, and Elberta made me laugh out loud quite a few times. Even Edver, who acted like a snob quite a few times, caught my attention as a… rather unique character. I loved seeing Denton and Edver together in scenes- they were both just hilarious.

Writing Style/Plot: I loved the plot! My goodness, I have never been so deeply involved in a book before. The PDF copy was almost 400 pages long, and it only took me a few days to finish it! As for the style, I enjoyed that too. It didn’t feel draggy, and it didn’t feel like I couldn’t take a breath because the plot was going to fast. It went at just the right pace.

Romance: Most of the romance was between married couples, and it was kisses and hugs. Nothing inappropriate, and I really enjoyed reading it, even though I don’t like reading romance very often.

Theme: I’m always rejoicing at books whenever the man shows up and defends his loved ones. Denton was a perfect example of what a man should do- protect those he loves- family and friends.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book! It was awesome!

Fantastic story! 🥰 I liked the first book—aside from my issues with Red (she redeemed herself in this book, in my opinion)—but I loved “Key”!

❤️Characters: Denton’s whit was fabulous, and he and Edver’s banter was so entertaining. Denton’s internal turmoil and desire to win favor…oh my heart. You’ll have to read to find out how that all goes. He was probably my favorite character.

Nerissa’s big-sister/“carry the family burden” personality? I related to that! She’s not without faults, but I loved her tender heart. Her growth in trusting God was beautiful.

Honorary mention for Nerissa’s uncle—I want to bake him some more banana bread and have a chat!—,her adorable sisters, Noko and Jonah (cutest little “warriors”), and the list could go on 🥰

❤️Plot: This story is fast paced, but considering the situation with the traffickers its well done. I did get a little mixed up at times (and with so many unique names of people and places, it’s easy to do), but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book. There’s a solid thread of faith content woven through this story (themes: God’s unconditional love for His children and trusting the Lord with your life).

I would read this one again!

☑️Content: the story deals with human trafficking and there are subtle tips that some will be used in sex trafficking. Having said that, I will say, I COMMEND the author for both creating a realistic, heart-wrenching story while staying away from any real grungy, grimy, vile description. Well done!

(The book does contain violence, death/murder {including children}, and human trafficking/kidnapping.)

I would personally recommend this book to older teens and adults.

just W.O.W.

i was hot off the heels of finishing another Rapunzel retelling when i picked this up, and let me tell you, this is what that other book was missing.

Carlin is such an amazing author. her heart and passion shine through in this story. it is raw. it is real. it is beautiful.

the topics in this book are hard - trafficking and kidnapping. but Carlin does it in the most beautiful, tasteful way.

what's not to like about this book? a beautiful cover, incredible themes, spot-on characters, the banter?!

i cannot get enough of this book or these characters. they own my heart and soul, and i don't think they plan on giving it back anytime soon. <33

KEY. Another Madisyn Carlin book… another AMAZING Madisyn Carlin book. Keep ‘em coming, Madi, you’ll always have a fan right here. (Me. I mean me.) This book is a non-magical fantasy full of adventure, deep characters, dire situations, a hint of romance, and everything Madi’s really really good at. It’s a Rapunzel retelling, though until the second half I couldn’t really tell, since the Rapunzel character is a side-ish character. Let us begin the Breeish review.

Mushy Mushiness: A sweet little tiny bit of romance, teeny tiny, and nothing inappropriate.

Ye Olde Magicks: N/A, as it’s a non-magical fantasy

Blood, Blood, Blood, and Death: Many injuries, lots of fighting, kidnapped women and children. Descriptions of injuries, lots of intense battles, both might be difficult for sensitive readers. The whole series is the good guys taking down a human trafficking trade, though there’s nothing explicit and the worst it gets is describing the terrified and scarred children locked away/rescued and recovering. It’s heartbreaking to imagine their fear.

Character Lineup: Agh, so many great characters… Denton, Neirissa, Edver, and Elberta were my favorites. Elberta cracked me up so many times… and Edver. And Denton and Neirissa were just sweet. Every character is well developed and unique.

This book made me laugh. And cry.

Madi's books NEVER fail to amaze me!!!!! There were SO MANY AMAZING QUOTES!!!!!!!!!!! I love how her books ALWAYS emphasize the precious value of each life.

Also, the characters....... NO ONE WRITES CHARACTERS like Madi. They are always SOOOOOOOO relatable and they all need hugs. And dark chocolate. LOTS OF DARK CHOCOLATE.

A fantastic in-between novel about Denton and Nerissa, two people brought together by God to heal and grow.
If you've read Carlin's previous book, you know a little about Denton and how he went from cowardly to courageous. In this novel, you get into the depths of his guilt about his inaction before and his overwhelming desire to prove himself worthy of God's love. The way he beat himself up was both relatable and heartbreaking, and it was nice to see him grow into a better understanding of unconditional love and forgiveness.
Nerissa is a new character, but she also is very relatable. As a constant worrier and overprotector of her sisters, she has difficulty letting God be the "master of her canoe." Her anxiety and fear was something that was understandable, especially considering the tribal society in which she lived.
Other great characters included Edver and Afya, and of course, Nerissa's sisters Daffy and Elberta.
The worldbuilding was fascinating as well. Most don't consider what it would be like to come from more of a landlocked country to tribes on the sea, but Carlin explores all of the differences with moments of hilarity and seriousness in a great balance. For example, Denton doesn't like the clam chowder and other fish food they serve, and I could relate to his distaste as someone who doesn't like seafood. Plus, it made sense because Denton is from the land. Also, a small side bonus, but something I really loved, was how horses were incorporated into the story, as well as horse training. As a horse lover myself, this was really fun to read and then eventually see play out in terms of plot. The plot, which basically centers around trying to stop human trafficking in a new area, was great, heart-pounding, and kept me glued to the page. However, some of the execution was a bit confusing.
Carlin is a minimalist in terms of description, and sometimes, that made me confused. For example, there is one time where Nerissa and her father get split up, and Nerissa thinks he is dead. I didn't realize they were split up or Nerissa thought this until they were reunited. Another time, near the end, a certain bad guy pushes Nerissa into the ocean. However, it is not clear what happens to this bad guy, and the bad guy was pretty important to the plot. Then, another time Denton was fighting a different bad guy (also important to the plot), and I thought they were fist fighting, but then Denton had a sword? And I'm not sure what the bad guy had? That is not to mention times where it felt like a jerky rollercoaster, taking us from what scene to the next without explanation. There was no setting, no "establishing shot" as my editor likes to call it, and even though I can usually take or leave establishing shots, in this case, I felt it was really needed for me to follow the story.
That being said, I really really enjoyed this story. I loved the way I felt the character's emotions, their struggles, and their growth. I really loved the way faith was incorporated into the story. The dialogue between characters was witty, pithy, and fun. The plot itself, though bumpy at times, was fast paced and intriguing. So I know I will buy the next in the chronicles, even if it means I have to strap myself in for the ride.

Another fantastic novel by Madisyn Carlin! I adored Denton in IRON, and I was so happy to hear that he would get his own book.

Characters: Let's start with the MCs, Denton and Nerissa. I knew Denton from the first book in the series, but I didn't realize how broken my poor boy actually was. He had so much trauma from the past. He's a bit of a misunderstood character in parts of the first book, so hearing more of his perspective and the truth of the matter was very interesting. His growth throughout the story was also so lovely - his struggle to believe the Lord truly loved him was so well-done. And then there's Nerissa - she was wonderful! She was more of an average girl put into very non-average situations, and watching her grow through those was such an important part of the novel. Her struggle with anxiety was relatable, and she and Denton just made such a sweet couple! The other characters were brilliant as well - side characters are sometimes just the best. I also liked seeing the other characters from the first book and how their life was progressing.

Plot/Setting: What a whirlwind of a plot! These poor characters were put through a lot - especially Denton. Poor boy needs to get some armor or bubble wrap to keep from getting injured. But there was plenty of action mixed into touching scenes and normal, everyday moments. The setting was also great -the ocean and the villages made the fantasy part of the book come alive. All the different nationalities were humorous, given they always complained about a random aspect of another's supposed attributes!

Moral/Theme: Ahh this was just gorgeous. The truth that the Lord loves His people and is in complete and sovereign control was just so lovely. Denton's conversation with Morris was especially profound - what a needed reminder that God does not operate according to our wisdom, He loves us, and we should never limit Him. This book was so encouraging, and full of truth that should permeate all Christian fiction books. Amazing!

For those of you who enjoy clean, Christian fantasy, check out this book (and the rest of the books by this author!) These are some of my favorite fantasy novels ever, and I'm excited to read the next books in this series.

Another amazing read by this wonderful author. Her stories are always full of so many biblical truths and lessons with no sugarcoating the tough stuff. Her characters are so real and relatable and paired with a writing style that is immersive and easy to follow it makes her books some of my favourites.

I loved getting Denton’s story and seeing the transformation in him from feeling worthless because of his past (thinking he’s needing to prove himself in the eyes of all -including his Maker) to realizing his Heavenly Father loves him despite any/all mistakes made in the past. He is wholly forgiven and redeemed. When you are forgiven it is whole and complete. The feeling of never being enough is a real thing to battle and one must learn to find their worth in their Creator. The Beginning who formed you for a specific reason doesn’t make mistakes.
Nerissa is an oldest sibling who only wants the best for her family and her village, but struggles with being anxious over what she cannot control. But when turmoil comes to her village and her heart she learns that ultimately she is not in control and all belongs to her Saviour and is in His hands and no amount of fretting will get her anywhere but bringing fear and angst. Surrender to the One who holds all is the only way to find true lasting joy and peace.
Besides Denton and Nerissa there were sooo many other great charries with amazing personalities. Both prior characters that I came to love in “Iron” as well as new equally loved characters.

No language or cursing.
This book deals with the horrendousness of trafficking and its aftermath on its victims. But without any graphic details. Such a horrible problem that is devastatingly very real in our world and the fact that people could be so evil as to do so is a very sad reality.

This is a catastrophic blend of sanctimonious prose and one-dimensional characters, an insufferable reminder that subtlety and storytelling have been sacrificed on the altar of egotistical moral grandstanding. Readers brave enough to delve into this literary trash dump are in for a ride where genuine artistry takes a backseat to the author's misguided quest for better-than-thou self-expression.

What did I just read?!

393 pages of pure awesomeness, that's what.

Fairytale retellings are not my go-to genre for multiple reasons, but mainly I tend to shy away from them due to their often-fluffy content and overly done romance.

Carlin nailed this retelling. First off, the Rapunzel aspect of this book was totally unique in its rendition. Set by the sea but with mountains and towers too?? Um, yes please. And her characters are the bomb. I thought I liked Denton in IRON, but he totally won me over in this book. (Maybe cause he's such a horseman?? Yeah, that might've had something to do with it . . .)

And let's not forget the theme here. This series has been pretty focused on trafficking and kidnappings of that sort. But Carlin handles it with the upmost tact, and I couldn't appreciate more reading a book that helps to shed light on such a despicable thing but while doing so in a completely tasteful and tactful way. Hat's off to you, Carlin, you did amazing.

This book was just as good as the previous one!

Denton, who appeared in Iron as a side character, was well-developed over the course of this book to become a lovable main character while staying truly in line with his previous behavior, and logically progressing. (The fact that he hates clam chowder only makes him more lovable. Just sayin'.)

Nerissa, the lady MC, was extremely relatable, and very much enjoyable. (To me, anyway... I, too, am a chicken, bite my nails, and make obscene amounts of banana bread, given the option.) 🤣 Her love for her family makes her a very personable character, despite the fears and doubts that make you wanna smack her sometimes.

Watching these two grow and fall in love is wonderful.

As always, the author points clearly to the Author of all, giving Him credit and praise without sacrificing her narrative. Her handiwork in building a new tale around the original is always awesome to read, and her worldbuilding is up to her usual standard of excellence-without-making-you-want-to-lose-your-mind-with-how-many-details-there-are.

Read this book! You won't regret it. 😉

Suffice to say, I think I loved Denton's story more than Red's. Am I allowed to say that? 😉🤭 And yes, this book got a place on my favorite shelf! I don't want to say a lot, cause I don't want to provide any spoilers... and maybe also cause I don't know how to put everything into words.... but just go read this book. It's got some romance, but it's all clean and beautiful - (I almost put this on my slight-romance shelf). Mostly it's a story of a broken soul learning that the Beginning's love is unconditional, and a fearful heart coming to understand that He is faithful and true.

Denton was my favorite. 😍 Like Nerissa, I just wanted to wrap him in a hug several times throughout the story. He may be broken, he may be hurt, but y'all he's a hero. A strong one at that.

I loved vibe I got from the setting of this book. Free is the word I have to use. The wind in your hair, the beach, the ocean - Wild, Beautiful, and Free.

Also, just have to say that Nerissa's little sisters were the cutest things ever!😍😍

This is a hard book - it deals with some tough things - but the redemption is powerful! And suffice to say, even though it's over 400 pages (my kind of book y'all!), the story didn't drag at all! Totally recommend!
