The Bad Guys #2

Der Dieb im ersten Stock

Rate this book

I gave the first book 5 stars because I enjoyed it so much despite a fair bit of criticism that I gave it. This book is almost as good but I don't feel like Ugland is learning from his mistakes.

There are a lot of typos in this, i reported some of them through kindle but it's not my job to edit it so I shouldn't have to.

I like the characters on the most part but why didn't he level at all during the whole book?

At chapter 36 you describe a morning star not a mace.

There is a lot happening throughout the book, but at the same time the characters don't seem to be progressing at all.

I don't feel like Ugland actually understands a proper game world. It's just not been well planned out, I have issues with nearly every aspect of it. This would actually be better written as a fantasy series rather than a litrpg as the rpg side of things is so poorly thought out while the story and characters are quite brilliant.

The ending was disappointing. If the next book doesn't start with him summoning the outsider or doing something equally clever without dying again I don't think I'll carry on reading. I can't stand stupidity in intelligent and crafty characters.

All in all a good book but the ending ruined it

All in all a good book but the ending ruined it. I don't know what the author drank or ate when he wrote the ending but he should stop because it pretty much ruined the book for me. It will be a bit of a coin toss if I will take a chance with the ext one.

Really good till the end

I hate endings like this one. No point in it. Not going to say more, good reading till the very end. Was a solid 8 out of 10. Dropped to a 4 with that ending. Will still read the next one... Most likely.

Mostly everything from my review of the first book applies here too. All the bad things from the first one haven't been fixed though, but worsened. The plot was messier and the game mechanics were kind of weird. It felt like nothing happened and no progression was made. Clyde got another building and met a couple of new people, but aside from that: nothing. He wants to learn magic but puts no effort into it? I can barely remember any specifics surrounding this book, even though I listened to it just last week. It was pretty unmemorable. I do remember the ending though. It basically made everything that happened throughout the book entirely pointless, which is a bit frustrating. Still entertaining and pleasant to listen to while cleaning, but definitely not an improvement from the first one.

Fun Times!

Love Eric Ugland. His irreverent writing style, the goofy characters, and the intrigue and mystery kept me page turning. Usually I don't care for books about thieves and rogues. All the suspense is NOT for me. I hate stuff jumping out and getting scared. But it is a lot easier whenever the MC's narrated thoughts are hilarious. I love the good guys and the bad guys, can't wait for more.

I really enjoy Ugland's style and stories. The way this one is woven in with the rest with 'The Good Guys' series was also really well done. I'm really hoping he follows up on that person from earth being tortured in the dungeon though, that's felt like a dangling plot thread since he mentioned it a book ago.

Yes!

How awesome this series is turning out! The back story into the happenings inside the city that we hear about in the Good Guys series is great, but the fact that the story stands on its own makes it even more enjoyable.

Did I also see the potential introduction to a couple of main characters in different series?

Time will tell, but I will read anything Eric writes.

Yes! I am feeling this series! I so love it when I am enjoying a series. The anticipation to what’s next, the joy of being entertained, I highly recommend the audiobook version- so good! I don’t want to spoil it, but I didn’t appreciate the cliffhanger in this story! So I will immediately be starting the next installment in this Bad Guys Series!

3 Mostly Braindead And Drooling Stars

Second Story Man is the second book in The Bad Guys series by Eris Ugland.

I feel let down by the Biscuit's Union. Maybe the letdown should've been easily intuitive, given their chosen moniker and the average age of the group, combined with their general level of complacency. But his introductory mission to join the guild was so vastly intriguing, that I thought there was a possibility of them becoming more thanni initially gave them credit for. Except now there is only one member technically alive, and he's being spawn camped.

This whole ordeal with the Emperor felt massively rushed. The entire Empire is about to be in upheaval because of some arrogant pissants power grab. Our dear Ckyde Hatchet has more than one avenue of messed up headed his direction.

I enjoy the family he's building. I hope we get to see them further evolve. Including Hellion and Boris. I honestly don't know what to make of Shae, she seems shady. I'm getting the vague feeling she hopes to manipulate Clyde with her level of attractiveness, no matter that the completed quest said she would possess unwavering loyalty.

Tell me more about the gods and the game that's being played.... I imagine they tie into each other.

He found the mystery and intrigue, now he just have to survive

Out of his league over and over again Clyde manages to eek out a win or at the least not lose his life. But he keeps coming close as if he is a magnet for trouble. Are there gods meddling here, real gods?
Or is he just both supremely lucky and unlucky in equal measures? Clyde and a good heart and really sticks to his Robin Hood ideals as he starts gathering pathetic beings of different races into his new family. Forgetting his own troubles past is easier when surrounded by friends.
More excitement, intrigue, a fancy ball, and thievery as Clyde explores his new world and makes a place for himself in the great city capita of Glaton.

4.25⭐️. I’m excited to see how these characters continue to grow. This book has set the next book up perfectly, though I do feel the ending was a bit… rushed/crammed together. But I get it.

Book two and the fun continues.

I love the serendipitous nature that random trapezing on a certain path and timing of an event could push a situation to be so entertaining. I loved it.

Now it could be a bias from my side , since I have kinda been reading serious stuff on the side. Reading something perfectly light like the books in the series gives a sense of such deep relief that a good full body massage at some spa would give you.

Plus it is rare that an audiobook give this experience and must highly commend the voice over artist.
I am so happy with my subscription with Storytel that leads me to binge listen when doing other physical work.

Clyde Hatchet is a protagonist who is sort of a modern medieval (yeah never thought those two words would go together) Robin Hood that has no issue with murdering bad people or people in his way. Dirtying his hands with dagger or magic while being constantly surprised on what he is capable of doing. The internal narrative is so entertaining that I wish Netflix picked it up and built an original series around it but then again don't ruin the experience that these books have already created in my mind.

The second book is like a series of mini quests to complete a singular quest that somehow times into a larger storyline. I would like understand the reasoning for why other players in the game behave the way they do.

Unlike other litRPG we don't see the protagonist have multiple entry and exit from the game and interacting with reality, so unless that is possible, I dont understand what kind of economic benefit can be built for players to act in the way they do.

Anyways looking forward to the next one in the series.

(No real spoilers but some things I said will only make sense after the book is read)

Enjoyable but near the end of the book the MC was making such stupid and basic mistakes (example - giving out his real name while on a job) that you have to wonder 'was the author trying to set up something and couldn't figure out a clever way to do it' or 'did the MC have his brains all banished to a horrible realm'?

Last scene - yeah - deserved. Part of the ongoing "I'm getting dumber" plot I guess. I have zero sympathy for anyone who acts stupidly and it makes them harder to like as the MC.

Other things (like collecting various people at his buildings in order to create the feeling of 'family') - cool. Good character building. It's a bad - but not horrible - idea from some angles but does make him feel better.

No idea why the author had the MC get so brain dead at the end of the book - let's hope his brain comes back in the next. My guess is it will probably be either solved by the old (over used) tropes of

a) if you just *believe in yourself enough, you can do it (dig down deep and by willpower or anger or both, overcome your stupidity!)
b) the power of friendship (someone to rescue his dumb ass)
c) using the wildly over powered power that (for some reason) the MC got hold of (ie 'drain')

We shall see.

Second Story Man
The Bad Guys: Book 2
By Eric Ugland

Summary:
Book 2 of the Bad Guys Series (BG), the title denoting the eponymous class of our MC who is a thief specializing in stealing from upper story homes/buildings. Clyde continues down the Robin Hood path as a “bad guy amongst bad guys” but gains, almost by accident or chance, several new things that further pushes him toward the bad side, such as discovering a new “healing” spell that has the reverse effect and killing in self-defense.

The profanity it toned way down still from the GG series. The sexual tension from his female companions continues to be alluring. His standing within the city continues to become more prominent. And the tension in the story continues to build.

The Good:
* The story continues the MC’s slow rise to prominence: doing heists, helping the needy, making new friends, leveling up, discovering secret plots. It’s so varied that things just stay interesting the entirety of the book.
* The overarching story is a parallel to the Good Guys series, seen from a different perspective. The Emperor of Valdrani is going to be assassinated, who will take (or steal) the throne? It never seems trite or uninspired even though this kind of story has been told over and over in other literature.
* YES, the 2 series begin to intersect as Benedict Coggeshall is mentioned (Montana’s adopted father who gifts Montana his dukedom in book 2 in the GG series.)
* The Emperor’s death is told from the other side from Montana’s perspective, pretty cool.
* The ending comes full circle back to the beginning where Clyde discovers a lady being spawn-camped/killed continuously, but with his own respawn point. I so want to read book 3 if only to see how Clyde escapes the death trap.

The Meh:
* It would be nice if the MC grew a pair and just took one of his willing female companions to bed. The author spends all this time describing how gorgeous and alluring they are yet writes the MC as a total soggy sausage.
* Almost exactly how Terry Pratchett writes his Discworld series, the author writes with faithlessness at his core. Poking fun of religion is a small but steady pastime of his.

The Bad:
* MC comes across some amazing loot and each item is described in detail. Yet, the MC sells almost all of it and gets little (imo) in return. This plot fail is exacerbated by the fact that he keeps getting mugged or taken against his will and has no way to defend himself because he’s sold all his amazing loot!
* Like Travis Bagwell’s “Catharsis” LitRPG, the MC uses a level 1 spell (Drain Life) on mobs 30+ levels above him. This would never happen in an actual balanced game with things like % to hit chance.
* Gideon’s origins as well as his mysterious ways of fencing loot continues to flummox the MC and the MC’s complete business ineptitude continues to flummox me! For as many stats and skills that the game world grants Clyde as he tries new things, RPG staples like bartering and charisma are glaringly absent.

One of the fascinating things about this second series by Ugland is that his new hero, Clive Hatchet, is interacting with an important plotline from the Good Guys series from a thousand or more miles away. Anyone reading this book who has already read the Good Guys (and that should be everyone) knows the fate of the emperor and how it's going to come about. Yet, Clive is uncovering critical information about who has it in for the most powerful man in the world. And he's struggling to get more to try and avert a dastardly deed that the reader knows was already committed. It's a great situation and promises to get even better.

In the meantime, Clive has joined a sort of "retired thieves' guild" as an effort to get a younger and more active thieves' guild off his back. It is a complete failure. And he can chalk up a few new nemeses on his list and add a few more reasons to hate them by the end of the book. And this does not take into account his lengthy encounter with the undead and his introduction to a paladin. If you don't think that the roguish thief should be hanging out with a paladin, well, neither does Clive.

Ugland just packs this novel with new quirky powers and situations. But if that wasn't enough to whet your appetite for the next book, he throws in his best cliffhanger ending yet. I don't know how the heck Clive is supposed to get out of this one.

really enjoyable story, love the unexpected outcome

Enjoyable yarn. MC doesn’t recognize that the only 2 women he knows have some interest in him. Obtuse or at least clueless where women are concerned. Hes learning about his new world and want to continue his profession as a thief. Still he hasn’t secured his base after getting attacked there numerous times. Yet he’s mentally railing against nobles’ lack of security. Ha ha, the MC ran away when the time came to have an honest discussion with Shea about his feelings. No surprise there, LOL. He’d definitely have had a better night if he’d stayed home to talk, instead he ended up kidnapped and thrown into the Shade as undead fodder.

Loved the twists and turns that occurred before the book ended. Excited to go on to the next book.

Awesome

Ugland provides so many incredible twists and turns in this series that you find yourself grinning through each book. If “The Good Guys” is the front half of the tapestry, then “The Bad Guys” is the back of it, and you can see more of the threads that run through everything. Like the other series, this one has a hero (mostly) who finds himself cascading through situations and events that are not just serious, dangerous, and important, they’re often hilarious as well. Even so he manages to make it through filthy, but alive. But not this time. Highly recommended (16+)

This fantasy LITRPG story continues--and that's not just a vague statement about the series being connected. The first book ended with a cliffhanger and this book started with the last paragraph (word for word) of the first book. This book also ended similarly (and I already started the third book, which does the same thing). So these are more like seasons in an aggressively written TV show, with a seamless continuation.

That's not to say the book is slow moving or that there isn't progression in the characters. Massive changes happened in this book and the characters are becoming more fleshed out. I almost gave this book five stars. Very much looking forward to the next book.

Clyde is seemingly going straight(ish) in this sequel to “Scamps and Scoundrels”. No longer just out for himself, he's accumulating roommates at an alarming rate, and might even do a few good deeds.

It was fine, but the LitRPG elements really started to grate on me. I'm just not interested enough in the world or the characters (other than the kobolds), to read any of the sequels any time soon. The kobolds, however, were worth the read. I really liked Boris. What I wouldn't give for an all-kobold heist novel. Do a “Lies of Locke Lamora” but make it kobold, and I'd be all over it!

Surprising decent continuation, with consequences matching boons. The kobold was my favorite new character. Character still has unnecessary serendipity falling into his lap, and a new op skill that literally makes him able to stat boost like crazy- I really hope he uses skill he actually gets like Summon Familiar from last book. I don't want another character with a list of skills and spells and he never uses more than 1/10 of them and is used to pad the list.

Great series…. But…..

Spoilers maybe…….

seriously what’s the point of giving him loot to just give us a cool description for him to just sell. Like pointless.

spoilers………

Also why in the F for that ending. Like he’s got to take time and figure his character out but not while he’s sitting with corpses in a building being infiltrated. Like what a newb. Ooh enemies are nearby let’s just sit and look through my menus

The book started out silly, fun, and rather sweet, with such a strong found-family element. Everything I know about D & D is from my limited reading in this subgenre. My favorite part might be the creative skills; I particularly liked Clyde gaining the skill "lying to yourself".

Unfortunately, this second Bad Guys book gradually becomes less fun, leading to an ending that left me a bit disgruntled. Overall, somewhere around a 3.5.

Good enough. I will definetly munch through the rest of the books. The series is great.

After reading books #7, #8, #1 and now #2 in "the Bad Guys" series, and books #1 and #2 in "the Good Guys" series I position this one in the middle with the good guys entries being the weakest entries.

I enjoy A lot the universe, the lore, the tone, the characters and most of all, the banter and dialogues. #Heart
The action, the system, the abilities, and the plot are OK-ish and Meh from time to time.

I had originally given this 4 stars (which seems to be my default), but started having second thoughts about continuing the series almost immediately after finishing the book. Given that I thought I should drop it a star and just not continue the series - I have multiple piles of books to read, and there is no sense reading something which was okay, maybe even good, but about which I'm not enthused.

This bounced around between 2 to 3 stars for me I did enjoy the characters and it was a little bit faster paced which I liked in the other book I like the steaks were a bit more nervous and the characters were still there Starkey cells I agree with a lot of other people though the ending was really bad not Really thought out very well I might read the rest of the series though I can’t say I’m in a big rush I might just put this one on hiatus for a while.

A good read

I generally have low expectations for LitRPG even though I enjoy the genre. This was a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed the banter between characters. I find that not a lot of writers are good at dialog, particularly witty banter and especially not in LitRPG but this book is genuinely entertaining and well written IMO.

Another super solid offering with some great tie ins to the Good Guys series. An real page burner that was impossible to put down at times. No complaints and surprised to say I like the Bad Guys even more than the Good guys but then again the Bad guys is actually pretty good. Without delay can't help but jump right into the next one!

Enjoyable

It is a pleasure to find books that draw you into the story to the point you are immersed. As LitRP
G books go the character update screens are few an far between, they don’t interfere with the flow of the story nearly as much as the every 5 or 10 page updates that are just filler to bring the page count up. Quite nice, I look forward to the rest of the series.
